Indonesia is quickly growing into a global superpower. Over the past 50 years, its population and economy have grown rapidly, projecting it onto the global stage. Nowadays, it is expanding as fast as ever and is expected to be the fourth largest economy in the world by 2050. However, this growth will not come without its challenges. Currently, Indonesia has many internal problems to deal with, such as corruption, separatism and economic inequality. And, from the exterior, it has to deal with the dangerous implications of climate change. However, Indonesia is working to manage these issues and is still on track to become a future global superpower.

Stop saying the Dutch granted us independence in 1949, we fought for it since 1945! And we declared it in 1945! It would be disrespect to Americans if you say they were granted independence in 1783, when they declare and fought for it since 1776!

Yeah, the history overview at the beginning is completely misleading and uninformed. It's not even oversimplified, it's outright wrong in many aspects. (Warning: wall of text ahead) "For most of human history, the region between Australia and Mainland Asia has been absent from the global stage [...] it was largely disconnected from the rest of the world." This is completely ahistorical and couldn't be further from truth. The vast majority of commodity from the "East" went past the region to be shipped to the "West", and in many cases originating from the region itself! Sumatra was the world's primary camphor producer, heck, the word "camphor" itself is etymologically derived from Malay kapur < Proto-Austronesian *qapuR. Every single piece of nutmeg and cloves in the medieval world came from tiny islands of Maluku to the east of the Archipelago (specifically, the four islands off coast Halmahera for cloves and the Banda Islands for nutmeg and mace; closer to New Guinea than to Mainland Asia!). Beads from Java, which uses Persian glass as the material, were sold as far as Korea and in many parts of Africa (look up "Jatim beads"). Major kingdoms like Srivijaya and Majapahit, who hold power over important chokepoints like the Strait of Malacca, were not in any way insignificant players in the global stage, especially in terms of economic power but also in terms of political, cultural and military influence. People from this region were not only producers but also actively involved in the trade, mostly as sailors and guides around the Indian Ocean. The English word "junk" is ultimately a borrowing form Javanese jong, which refers to a kind of massive vessels used to ship commodities in the region (ships in Southeast Asia were much larger than the contemporary medieval Europe ones). This is also one of the reasons why people from Indonesia were among the first inhabitants of Madagascar off coast Africa (the Malagasy language is the sole Austronesian language in the whole continent, and its closest relatives are spoken in southeastern Borneo). The Austronesian language family is literally the most widely spread language family in the world before European colonization. In any case, the region was far from being isolated or disconnected. On the opposite, it was the economic heart of the Indian Ocean World, especially from the first millennium onward, when the seasonal monsoon cycle was first discovered (most likely by Austronesians, too!) and began to be utilized, dramatically increasing the frequency and capacity of trade in the region.
@junirenjana
@junirenjana 2 года назад
"For nearly 450 years, the area was suppressed by colonial rule." This is also quite misleading. The colonial intrusion to the region began in 1511 through the capture of the city of Malacca (which is in modern-day Malaysia, not Indonesia, by the way) and for a couple centuries did not go past controlling trades in several ports. The Dutch really only started territorial conquest in the later half of 17th century and even then still don't hold power over most of the Archipelago until around the late 19th century. Not a single region in Indonesia was colonized for nearly 450 years, not even for 350 years. Jakarta, for example, was under colonial rule for at most 330 years, but even that's still an outlier. My hometown of Palembang, for example was only really brought under colonial rule in 1821. But then again, colonial rule did suppress a lot of the local trade. Companies like VOC enforced monopoly on certain goods, and used direct force when their demands are not heeded, in some cases amounting to literal genocide (e.g. Banda). Their arrival disrupted centuries of prosperity due to trade. In other words, it's exactly because of colonial suppression that Indonesia became impoverished and "disconnected from the rest of the world". "1949, when it was finally granted independence, and the country Indonesia was born." Both the modern governments of Indonesia and the Netherlands (at least orally) have recognized August 17th, 1945 as the date of Indonesian independence. And this is more of a problem with the wording, but even if they want to put the 1949 as the date, it's not the time when Indonesia was "granted independence" but "acknowledged by the Dutch as an independent country". As you say, the independence was fought hard both by military and diplomatic efforts, and it would be very reductive to say that they just achieved independence by being "granted". Why these are all important, you might say? Well, if done well, presenting history could provide a context for current issues. Indonesia's rise as a superpower, in a more historically-informed analysis, actually mirror the region importance in the past, especially before colonization. The video also mention some internal problems that might hold Indonesia back from achieving the superpower status. If you do pay close attention to its history, most of these problems has its roots in the more recent history of colonization and autocracies of the first 50 years of Indonesia's existence. This is not to say that history can provide all the answers. But the lack of accurate historical context in this video does make it short of being a comprehensive analysis.

It's been always the balance of Global Superpower that's why Portuguese, Dutch, English, French and Japanese want to take over Indonesia. And the most sneaky one is The Middle East that's why majority of Indonesians are muslims but they don't really understand what they're following as most don't speak any Arabic neither ever studied the religion intensively since childhood neither ever lived in The Middle East either including the presidents of just 76 years old Republic of Indonesia, yet the system is inherited from the Dutch and most of them including since Soeharto to Jokowi non of them can speak any Dutch and Arabic. real Indonesia is stretching from UK to Russia in comparison to Europe not your explanation on video and not that too small scale on world map since 1569 Mercator.

Not like India, Brazil or South Africa as the subcontinent country, Indonesia has 17.000 more islands, and 6.000 more are habitant. It's not easy connecting whole of islands, nature challange, roughest sea, volcanic mountains, with thousand ethnic and local languages. with a million complex problems How Indonesia become in one nation. Indonesia has good infrastructure already. Indonesia is one of the biggest internet users in the world and for social media, Indonesia always in top 5 if not top 10 biggest users. Most people have smartphones even in the remote islands or villages especially since the rapid electronic import from China. Many Ports have been built, train rails, airports, highways. As indonesian, I hope it will come true. But, we have a lot of home work to make it true. Indonesia has abundant of natural resources, but most of it are exported as raw materials (such as mine ores and CPO). If it want to become a new economic power in the world, Indonesia has to develop a strong downstream industries, such as manufacture industries. Now Indonesia has a smelting policy, stating the mine ores can't be exported as raw ores, but has to be smelted in Indonesia first. That is a good development, but not yet enough. Indonesia need to develop it's manufacture industries that will utilise those smelted ores, and produce more valuable materials and goods. The industries will create more employment for the citizen, and the products will increase exports and GDP. For now, indonesia still has a long way to go.

A quick history of Indonesia independence Indonesia declared Independence on 17th August 1945, but only some countries recognized Indonesia independence, mainly from the middle east like egypt, palestine, and so on. But the dutch doesn't happy to see it's precious colony to become independent, so they tried to take it back (and it's very successful, kinda) Then bcz most country in the UN sympathy more to Indonesia rather than the dutch, so the UN called Indonesia and the Netherlands to round table conference in 1949 that made the dutch finally recognized Indonesia Independence (but the dutch keep the west papua until after 1960)

REAL FACT 🇲🇨 : Indonesia has a strong unity and a very strong country, Indonesia has many allies, and if Indonesia is attacked, it is difficult to control all the islands in Indonesia, and the attackers will not only fight the army but will also fight the peoples, all men and young people in Indonesia,, the people will be willing to die for the country, the Indonesian people have a history of fighting dutch, as a country with the most Muslims they believe defending the country means protecting religion and they consider it and called it "jihad", or death for religion, Indonesia has a saying "freedom or death"
@junirenjana
@junirenjana 2 года назад
While I like your highlight of the growth of Indonesia post-independence, I think the history overview you put at the beginning is completely misleading and uninformed.
@junirenjana
@junirenjana 2 года назад
"1949, when it was finally granted independence, and the country Indonesia was born." Both the modern governments of Indonesia and the Dutch (at least orally) have recognized August 17th, 1945 as the date of Indonesian independence. And this is more of a problem with the wording, but even if you want to put the 1949 as the date, it's not the time when Indonesia was "granted independence" but "acknowledged by the Dutch as an independent country". The independence was fought hard both by military and diplomatic efforts, and it would be very reductive to say that they just achieved independence by being "granted". Why these are all important, you might say? Well, if done well, presenting history could provide a context for current issues. Indonesia's rise as a superpower, in a more historically-informed analysis, actually mirror the region importance in the past, especially before colonization. You also mention some internal problems that might hold Indonesia back from achieving the superpower status. If you do pay close attention to its history, most of these problems has its roots in the more recent history of colonization and autocracies of the first 50 years of Indonesia's existence. This is not to say that history can provide all the answers. But the lack of accurate historical context in this video does make it short of being comprehensive analysis.

I can't believe that if the US helped Indonesia to become independent, in fact, they were aiming to steal natural resources. that's all I know. don't feel your country is strong, no matter how strong it is still weak. We like peace, not war. if the translation process is not accurate, it is possible that the information I say has a deep meaning or different synonyms.

hi, I'm a Jakartan, and here are the few things I can give corrections to: - Indonesian declaration of independence is in August 17, 1945. the round table conference of December 27, 1949, was the Dutch acknowledgement of Indonesian independence after humping to the allied force to regain control over their former colony. - connection with the known classical world was established far long ago, but these things are could still be debatable, such us barus that used in balming of Egyptian mummies, the woods used in the making of Noah's ark, some of the cinnamon besides from Srilanka and last but not least, thank you for the beautiful video 🤙

The West always want to say 1949, because they had launched military aggressions during these years (1945-1949) which had murdered thousands of people, led by the British, followed by the Dutch to reclaim the country and supported by the Allies. If the West admitted the independence in 1945 it means they had admitted they had violated the peace with violence, that is why the narration brought always independence in 1949 in any Western media

Indonesia became independent in 1945 not 1949, you are giving wrong information, man! After Indonesia's independence day was declared on August 17, 1945, six countries became the first to recognize it. The existence of a country that recognizes Indonesia's independence fulfills the declarative element in forming the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI). In addition to the declarative element, there is also a constitutive element that influences it, which consists of a sovereign territory, people and government. Why do you say 1949, when since 1945 all the conditions have been fulfilled as a country? Until 1949 the Dutch wanted to reclaim Indonesia, it did not mean that Indonesia was not independent until the time the Dutch left our country.

Hey man, don't be butthurted first. Indonesia proclaimed themself as an independent nation in 1945, despite that... The world finally fully recognized Indonesia in 1949 (Indonesia faced several military agressions from the dutch and allies between 1945-1949) after the Den Haag Conference or in Indonesia commonly known as "konferensi meja bundar."

Despite there were 6 countries recognized Indonesia's independence in 1945, Indonesia were just like Transnistria or kind of nowdays ROC Taiwan thus are countries with limited recognition despite on the other side, they have proclaimed themselves as an independent state.

Indonesia is the sleeping giant. Their youth are well educated, technological savvy, and eager to work and learn. I manages a regional team across ASEAN and my two best performing team members are 2 Indonesian ladies, and they just perform well above my standard. They converse very well in English and Bahasa confidently, and super hardworking, always working way past their official working hours and they are not even 25 years of age. There are very good potential in their country but sometimes given their population density, these people would not have the opportunity to become what their potential could led them

For now, it's hard to say. Indonesia has to develop it's downstream industries. Indonesia has ambundant of natural resources, but most of it, is exported as raw material. If indonesia want to move forward and increase it's economic condition, indonesia has to build a strong downstream industries, such as smelting industries (for it's mining ore) and manufacture industries. That will create more employment for the citizen and more adding value for the exported material/goods. After the downstream industries is developed, the services industries will follow. Then Indonesia could become new economic power in the world.

Many empires has arise taking advantage of the geological features of the region has become the most prosperous nation at the time. Now, Indonesia too will use that advantage to become a future superpower of the South East Asia.
