This video hits on some important points that aren't about this race: - being aero - circuit races are better for fans - Britain needs more world tour races but the state of road racing in the UK sucks - mega talent coming through for Britain
@Boothster084

I wondered the exact same thing.
@sharpyt1

Totally agree - the lack of National A and even National B races is really stifling the road racing scene. Not enough races for conti teams to get the sponsor exposure they need to function, and Nat Bs end up stacked full of conti guys which means that people like me with a distinct lack of talent either don't get a place or get demolished.

@@davidcook8065 hope you enjoy the doc! RE my FTP - it was. A week or so after the road race I hit 397w for 20mins in an FTP test (so 377w at 78kg = 4.8w/kg). I think Dan's FTP is slightly lower but still very very good. I reckon I should have beaten him in the TT, in the doc you can see I spent 5 or so seconds clipping in *face palm*, had a flappy jersey on and I got held up for a few seconds by traffic (sure Dan could say the same about most of this though). Plus I didn't hit my target power by about 20w so underperformed. As the documentary was trying to show it's not all power, positioning matters, and I think that's something many of us struggle with irl. If we get to do an episode 3 I'd hope we'd get more podiums/wins. I'm cat 3 now and will be pushing for cat 2 next season :). Also don't forget in the couple of sprints Dan did actually get into he rolled most of the competition, so it's just about making that front group next time, something he's easily capable of.

Regarding lack of GB World Tour racing, I think everybody including British Cycling was expecting Gary Verity who got Tour De France to Yorkshire and created Tour De Yorkshire would expand the model and turn it into more racing days but the he fcuked it all up by fiddling his expenses, bullying , harassment and all sorts and resigned due to “ill health”.

Amateur cycling in Britain is heavily biased towards time-trialling. Long ago "massed start" racing was banned on public roads so the only way cycling clubs could organise races was to send the riders off one at a time. If you got pulled over by plod you would just claim you were off to get the shopping. This lead to a whole host of 10 mile and 25 mile (16km & 40km for you modern chaps) time trials happening up and down the country. Even though the first prize for winning one of these races is the price of a portion of fish & chips (they're often called "fish & chippers") you will see most of the participants covering their shoes & spoked wheels in parcel tape. Brits are definitely good at aero-on-a-budget :-D

Nationals aren't like normal races. The way I saw it Swift really wanted this one because a) it was a rare chance to race for himself & b) to help backup (almost justify) his 2 & half years in the national jersey. I think he saw Hayter as his biggest rival & so was always on the front foot, keeping Hayter behind with all the advantages that brings. I'd say he rode it to perfection. There was a gamble with Wright being there but if he had worked to get Hayter in the front group he would have had less chance of beating Hayter than Wright.

Great to have you back LR How the UK scene has changed over the years since the return of the TofBr in its latest incarnation it has allowed racers to develope and graduate into the ranks of the WT teams. Seeing riders in jerseys of the likes of FDJ etc has now become the norm, it wasn’t that long ago most riders were on UK based National teams. It’s good to see. Just wish we had a couple of really good one day races to support

Fred Wright was probably fairly confident in winning from this group, which is why he was closing down Tanfield’s moves. If he let Hayter back in then I think he wouldn’t have won, so he had no choice but to ride. Swift just played the perfect, I have a teammate behind card so I don’t have to cover these moves and saved just enough to come around Wright at the end, who I think is still a better rider. Sometimes it’s about being willing to lose to win.

I didn't get to see it live great race, solid recap really told the story. Feels like Innsbruck type worlds with this generation being so versatile might benefit from the style they have been going with closing circuits. Course thats not mvdp,wva, pidcock friendly is bit of shame like an Innsbruck. Sagan got to showcase a bit now Julian imo two best out and out racers/showmen of those years. Next few worlds appear that way. Pog might wait a while for course truly suiting him. Sorry sidetracked by those points great vid awesome route. Nuanced

Having done the British Nat. champs, I can say that they are brutal. Sh** roads, narrow roads, always rain and the firepower that the Conti teams bring is insane. They some allow Elites and Category 1 racers into these races which is how I got in 2017. Proud to say I got spat and basically called it a day on my cycling career and focused on the day job 😂

It's really expensive in the UK to get the closed roads needed for top flight racing. The Women's Tour director was saying that it cost more than £200k just for policing this year, before you add in any other costs. I think the whole position and aero thing that you see with UK riders is because so many spend time in the TT scene, and that is aero obsessed and has a lot of good people putting energy into doing better aero.
