Laughs in ASPD... On a serious note: there are two examples of in group bias worth mentioning: 1) The original planet of the apes: the extras who had never met before automatically segregated according to their costumes during breaks. 2) After WWII, part of Germany was occupied by Russia. Even decades after the reunification, Germany is still split and this effect is likely to last longer than the occupation did!

"The" in-group? America has many groups, and all of them have in-groups and out-groups.

IMO, in group bias is what makes people feel secure. It could be as simple as a workplace. If you’re in a workplace for and were being harassed by a customer, the in group bias of a workplace would hopefully give you the benefit of the doubt in the situation. This concept extends to everything, like government and more.

So much of what people call racism is actually ingroup bias. It may not be fixed in intensity, but its here to stay. Attempts to make percieved unfairness more fair are just as discriminatory. Treat everyone equally initially and go from there . That's the best we'll ever achieve. Unfortunately we are moving in the wrong direction.

You’re damn right!!! It means nothing that some people were treated like animals and absurdly abused (for centuries) not-so long-ago, and now mostly live in poverty mostly because of this not-so-distant past. Now we’re all the same, and if you suffer from structural racism, it’s not my fault. And as my buddy here predicts, because he can see into the future, that’s the best we’l get. Buddy, the world changes. Deal with it instead of windging about it.

What if you are falling prey to another cognitive distortion? All/nothing thinking? Sure, there many be some aspects of ingroup bias that fuel more in group cohesion/protection & seeing other as a threat/wrong merely because they are “other”, that survival mechanism of competing for resources, preference for our “group”…however, there is ALSO a lot of racism, discrimination, that is based on fear, misinformation, fear of the unknown/uncertain (even if it can be better, poor emotional intelligence and so on. It’s very complex. However we cannot substitute the effects of racism, cloak it over with a new term of ingroup bias…as that does create dismissal, invalidation, minimization, justification, for unspeakable traumas, the collective pain, a domino effect, which is cumulatively transmitted if not processed/heard/felt/expressed. We need to get better at complexities of humanity and ourselves. Rarely are things easily answered. Too often we try to find a simple answer, while ignoring all the rest…as a subconscious strategy to feel better (often trying to resolve the cognitive dissonance that is created with so much information).

We need to have God in the discussion of how to build a better society, group-bias is not enough to explain evil.

I was with you until you got to the white straight men part. I do not think people understand the many factor that are at play with topics like that. Even looking at the example you used can be viewed as ingroup and outgroup bias based on if you agree or disagree.
