Can you imagine having a boss so bad that if you were to get sick, that boss would make yo do extra work or dock your pay? Now imagine there are two of them. Unfortunately for the 2-30 Infantry BN that hell is a reality. During a rough training period the elements of nature went above and beyond to beat down the soldiers of 2-30 but no more than when their Command Sergeant Major and Battalion Commander made a unified statement that any soldiers with an injury will receive a "Article 15." The poor "wild boar" soldiers became water logged, and fell victim to hypothermia and trench-foot from the winter conditions but many didn't report it. This was due to their fear of being reprimanded. Angry Drill Sergeant throws his hat in the ring for the JOEs.

I had a Soldier receive an Article 15 while in Afghanistan after getting hurt. He was sent back to me on Rear D with instructions to counsel and separate him. Turns out, he had a broken back and could have been paralyzed at any time. I loved watching the Hospital commander dress down the soldiers Chain of Command when he found out the full story.
@motox49
@motox49 3 года назад
Can confirm, in my old unit we had a priv get PRK, he was still on quarters, we had a PT test and our wonderful 1st sgt demanded to know why said pvt wasn't dressed for it. His whole chain of command from team leader to PL leader told the 1st sgt that the priv just had PRK, was still on quarters and was exempt. 1st sgt demanded to see papers proving this, the papers the priv had in his hand were blank (because he couldn't fucking see), 1st sgt said well he doesn't have papers he taking the PT test as is. The priv took the PT test, got sweat in his eyes and ruptured blood vessels in his eyes, he's now legally blind and was other then honorably discharged for it. This same 1st sgt was caught making money bets with our CSM on how many joes he could get chaptered out per week and month. IG complaints were made, finds out the NCOIC for our Brigade was banging our 1st sgt, so all the complaints ended up on his desk every time.

I mean hell I didn't use the steroid drops often enough and I've been told many times I have heavy scarring on my eyeballs that will affect me when I'm older, so I couldn't imagine if I had to deal with jackass leadership on top of such a shitty situation. “There are no such thing as bad soldiers, only bad officers” Napoleon Bonaparte

@notmenotme614 3 года назад
There's a good video on RU-vid about Napoleons Marshalls. What struck me is they all came from varied backgrounds, some were even working class and worked their way up the ranks, proving themselves in battle. One even became the King of Naples, not bad for the son of an inn keeper. While Brit Officers were upper class who paid for their commission, talent wasn't necessary.
@oldnosey4961
@oldnosey4961 3 года назад
@@notmenotme614 while true British officer did pay for their commissions, it doesn't mean they didn't have talent. Infact most British officers were great at their jobs. From the Major to Colonel, the British Battalions fought better than their French counter parts. Where the 'bad' officers were, was usually on the staff of the division level. The Duke's staff was very well kept, because the Duke himself limited the authority of the staff. Meanwhile, excellent commanders such as Rowland Hill, Thomas Graham, and Crawford, could easily handle separate commands, and excelled at them. Meanwhile British Officers were very courageous. and held off the French in a thin line that they kept steady. British Battalions piece for piece, were better than the French, meanwhile the staff work in battle was good, yet on campaign, the staff didn't do great. The aristocrats also we're the few that could read, and had experience in administrative duties. Many were in militia's in Ireland, or had served in India. So British officers we're better at keeping discipline, and we're equally courageous as the French, As their commanders out maneuvered the poor French Generals. Such as Junot, Mormont, McDonald, Soult, Massena. The French always had greater fire power in terms of cannon, so Experienced British commanders would keep their men safe, by advancing swiftly, lying prone, or waiting on the reverse slope. Stories from the mess don't count for how they acted in the field. VERY FEW British battalions broke and fled.

This happened to us during training in 2000. We suffered 67 cases of hypothermia and cold related injuries. We were in NC and it snowed 2' with no cold weather gear but a field jacket. Our water bull froze solid. One guy I went to bootcamp with was medically discharged due to shivering so bad he dislocated his the discs in his spine. I remember the contempt of our Captain for us as he complained while people were collapsing into their fox holes while they were digging them. The shits he was spueing while everyone could hear the styrofoam squeaking in his backpack to look full and go home every day. Shit went downhill after that with a full route being implemented on the way back with hundreds of thousands of gear being lost. I heard he was removed from command for that a few years later.

Know it has been awhile since you posted his but it is very similar to something that happened to me. Needless to say I have had and still have so much worse that came of my service, which I still want to do to this day. FUBAR though and am retired =(. 90% with 10 different service connected disabilities. I didn't fight the VA's findings when I retired, and I should have. Still haven't to this day, and I should. I have a hard time asking for help. Had a Chief of the Watch down in Kings Bay, GA that had us standing watches in EHW during deep winter, with winds a howling. Needless to say was freaking cold, especially with the wind blowing through the EHW building covering the sub. Was on the east side pier bunker manning a Mk43. No cold weather gear was issued to the watches, if I am not mistaken, because it looked unprofessional and they didn't want to bother sourcing it for weather that would pass in a few days or something to that effect. Well about 6 1/2 hours into an 8 hour topside watch, I was shaking so bad I was having spasms in my back so bad I could hardly stand or walk. Shooting pains like I experienced during and after my spinal fusions. Was freaking hurting. I have had 3 spinal fusions now from sub duty, amongst 8 other major surgeries (shoulders, knees, hernias, etc.). 6'5" and sub duty isn't exactly a good fit haha. Well other than the absolute neck and back pain from the shivering and my teeth chattering so much I chipped a damn tooth somehow, I was coughing up blood and snot. Snot that I had been swallowing down all watch from the 40mph gust in sub freezing temps. So I imagine the wind chill was pretty damned low lol. Coughing up a blood and snot mixture, quickly turned into throwing up said mixture. Had to be relieved of my watch 90 minutes before it ended. I was an E-2 at the time, so fairly junior then. Was being accused of malingering. Thank god our Corpsman had my back after I got relieved, because the COW wanted to write up articles for said relief. When the CO saw me the next morning he was PISSED OFF. Needless to say they had cold weather gear on the boat the next day. Experiences like that molded me into the outstanding leader I know I am. Never, NEVER, would do that to my men. Never would have them do something I wasn't willing to do. And damned sure didn't discipline them for something out of their control. Had some crappy Chiefs at that time. Needless to say. Chief Electronics Technician (SS/IDW) Retired Hooyah!

I asked why ... because it was clearly a punishment and I had ZERO clue how I'd screwed up. CSM told me that I hadn't been standing still while on parade that morning. The only problem was that it wasn't me ... it was the guy standing next to me that was doing it and the Sergeant that was **behind** us had fingered the wrong guy. I was seriously pissed off as this would mean I was on duty during the unit farewell for one of my best mates. I thought about it a minute and said "Sorry ... I'll take the charge". CSM was shocked but told me that wasn't an option, and my reply was "It is. I'm not going to turn up for duty tomorrow night and then you're going to have to charge me, and the CO is going to hear the entire story". The end result was that the Sergeant had to take me out for 'extra drill training' that evening and after 10 minutes we packed it in and went to the farewell. Maybe it's different these days, but I wasn't the only soldier I knew who refused a bullshit discipline and demanded to be charged.

In a way, it makes a bit more sense in that situation. But without more context you cant say if it was th right or wrong call. Eg. It's 25 years later, and I still require meds to keep propper circulation in my feet during the coldest months. Always will. Having run into an officer who thought unit level officers, not doctors, should be allowed to tell a soldier if their injury warranted lighter duty or not, I think that officers should have to go through a detailed course that lets them learn how permanent some of this crap can be.

Back when I was stationed at Ft. Lewis, I'm talking like 21 years ago, I gained weight and was put on remedial PT. They had us running 5 miles every morning, which is fine as I understand that I needed to lose a few pounds. One particular morning they had us run up this steep nature trail in the woods. It was raining, and on the way down I slipped on the mud, went straight up in the air, and came down on a rock directly smashing my knee. I tried to get up and couldn't put any pressure on that leg without extreme pain. I was also bleeding profusely. Even with the rain my sock was soaked in blood. I fell out and when confronted by the E-5 in charge of the run was forced to run back to the barracks before heading to sick call. I limped the entire way, 2+ miles, and was almost crying due to the pain. When I got back to the barracks and took a shower, I noticed that a bone on my left knee, where the gash was located, was protruding a good inch further out than the one on the right. When I got to Madigan they did an x-ray of the leg. The "doctor" comes in and tells me that the reason the bone is protruding is because I have "Runner's Knee". Keep in mind the bone was not like that before I injured it. I was given ibuprofen and sent to work. I could barely walk on that leg for weeks, but was forced to continue the remedial PT. I loaded up on pain killers and wrapped the injury to the best of my ability but still had a hard time running due to the pain. Eventually it healed enough to where I could walk comfortably, but fast forward 20 years and I still have major problems with that knee. I have difficulty standing for long periods of time, and have issues with a lot of stairs. The bone healed, but is still protruding. The whole situation really affected my attitude, and I went from totally motivated and excited to re-enlist, to getting out a year and a half later with a real negative opinion of the Army as a whole.

There is a difference between being hard and being completely stupid. Ignoring preventable injuries during training is stupid as it degrades the force. Also, if real injuries aren't treated, how do they expect medics to ever get any sort of real training? treating actual cold weather injuries and seeing the results of said cold weather treatments is invaluable for a medic out in the field. Yet you have commanders scaring injured soldiers into hiding and concealing their injuries and eventually degrading your current manpower.

My grandpa passed away many years ago, but he was combat infantry in WWII in Europe and joined the Army Signal Corp just as Korea was kicking off as he figured if he waited he'd get drafted and he didn't want to risk that (as he was dating my grandmother by this time), as he wouldn't be able to pick an occupation and figured he'd end up in the infantry a second time, having already had some close calls in WWII. So he joined, immediately got shipped to Korea, being a WWII veteran and all, and his unit was, as I understood it, attached to the Marines to facilitate their communications, and of course they ended up trapped with them at the Chosin Reservoir. So it didn't really go to plan. That's life I suppose. He ended up with trench foot, frost bite, and said that cans of food were frozen solid often with no where to warm them, and that he couldn't believe the Chinese just attacking in waves and being machine gunned, and dead bodies just frozen in place in awkward positions, which I imagine would be surreal. They end up destroying readiness and gee, I wonder if in a war situation if trench foot effects warfighting capabilities? If you are in WWI with trench foot, you do your best because they may not be able to help you, that doesn't mean that in practice, you try to simulate it. Whether you have the experience of trench foot prior to being in a war situation or not, the outcome is always the same. You don't suddenly fight better because you have "experience" in trench foot.

Do you mean the "how to avoid and/or treat frostbite and other cold weather injuries during cold weather situations" in the Basic First Aid Manual ??? Is that in the CTT Manual ??? It might even be in the Ranger Handbook ??? Could it be in the basic leadership manuals at the Sergeant (E-5)/Specialist (E-4) levels ??? Just wondering, as a Sergeant, where I would be able to find that information to help out my Team, Squad, or just "Joes" in general. That might help me throughout my entire career. Hell, why didn't I think about that as a Private/Private First Class or Specialist, so that I could benefit from it in the future ??? Maybe, if my Team/Squad Leaders had only given me a quick refresher, or even a full class, on Cold Weather Preparation during the few days before the storms hit our AO, it would have helped me and the rest of our Team/Squad (or even further up the Chain of Command) become better Soldiers. Just asking

I came back from getting 2 bags of IV fluid to him and a counseling statement. ...or dying" ?????? The temps were just under +40°.... Their MSS (Sleeping bag system) goes down to -20°, at least. They get issued cold weather gear. They have multiple pairs of socks. They could have avoided those "cold weather injuries" if their lower level NCOs had any REAL training, or had the INTERNET to look up "how to deal with the cold" or "how the military deals with the cold" videos on RU-vid. 🤷‍♂️ Just saying..... It seems like that "okayest_sergeant" failed to prepare or protect his/her troops from having/incurring cold weather injuries, due to his/her lack of preparation or lack of looking for a solution (all so easily done online, in modern times). Al he/she did was complain about what others did or said, but never commented on what he/she did or failed to do for his/her Soldiers to avoid/prevent the "frostbite"/etc. (Which is in the CTT Manual). It's not like the snow and cold weather happened all within an hour, and caught them all unprepared. If they are checking social media, they can sure as hell check the weather. They had weather warnings BEFORE the "storms" actually hit. Preparation for the weather is the NCO's responsibility, over his/her "Joes".

I was in 3BCT 10th MTN from early 11 to mid 14. Definitely was a thing then. I avoided sick call just to not deal with any backlash. I accidentally cut part of my hand open during the beginning of my tour, squirted sanitizer on it and wrapped it up in a clean new shirt to stop the bleeding (which obviously worked). I knew I'd get smoked shi7less if I reported it. So I just kept quiet about it and some hours later got asked why I had a shirt on my hand. Bleeding stopped by that point but shirt was covered on the inside by blood. Senior NCO sent me to medic to have it recleaned and put antibiotics on it. Right after that I got smoked for 2hrs for not saying anything about it, then had to go back to medic once again that night to get it recleaned because the wound opened up even more from my smoking. Hmm, I wonder why soldiers don't report stuff 🤔
