Bro, I watched this video a month ago, ended up screen recording his version of Jesus loves Me, and have been listening to it on replay for a month now, I think it's one of my favourite pieces I've heard in a LOOONG TIME. So absolutely insane! Sounds was so good in this recording too 🙏🏽
Hearing Art speak was a privilege. So important not to be consumed by mistakes but to always be open and honest in our playing and lead us in spirit to expressing emotion and freedom.
“Whatever it is you play, music does not define WHO you are. It is just an aspect OF you.” This quote has single-handedly taken me out of such a dark place. Thank Sean and Art.
I'm humbled by this particular session with him, much more from his behaviour to his playing. He's a learner; he doesn't mind where the knowledge is coming from cos he's that humble to learn from anyone even if he's better than them or not, my God 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺... Thank you so much Mr Art Brown for being so humble even with the great grace you've got 🙏🙌❤️
Wow. so happy I found this channel. So many things to ponder and try. I’m a long time jazz player and have always loved gospel music. Now I find myself playing in church and feel pretty lost in terms of how to work and practice but it’s okay. This is all very helpful. Thank you both very much.
An Anointed MASTER!!! His spirit is so humble! Reminds me of my Dad playing, but as Shawn said, I couldn't here the voicing, because it was mind blowing. Dad (1960s-1980s) wouldn't stop & show me how to play because he said, baby, this isn't the way we play it in Church (I was 10yrs old), but have never been able to erase his voicing/voiced chords from my desire play. Thanks for taking me back!
What Art said about how he practices reminds me of a similar thing Bill Evans (know for his great harmonic depth) said about practice; when asked why he had such great touch and harmony, he said, " I practice the minimum "... In other words, he took a small idea and practice that deeply... I've also seen him say (in a video interview with his brother), it's better to practice 'one' tune for 24 hours than it is to practice 24 tunes in an hour - making the point that Art is repeating here... less is more.... Easier said than done though 🙂. Anyway, that tune Art played was INSANE!
great insights. as musician who plays in church i have found that the older i get my time is much more limited this is very useful. you guys are blessing me wow🙌🏾🙌🏾.
Schedule is soooo important. And yes practice a few things not everything. In the words of Bruce Lee, "I don't fear the man who practices 1000 punches one time, I fear the man who practices one punch 1000 times." It's also interesting to hear how he sticks to one key at a time...all 12 keys. Ahh! I knew it, who he's listened to, Bill Evans, George Shearing, Oscar Peterson, and Oakwood Choir; and yes I record myself too. Lollygagging??? I took 40 plus years off the piano. Thanks for the post. May God continue to bless you.
Blessed by this! A lot of great info. I’m working on improving in multiple disciplines. I feel the talking points here apply to all of them (even beyond music). Thank you both! FYI, I sent something to Art directly. Hopefully right acct. Next time y’all touch base, could you PM me to confirm he got it?
Yo, A LONG TIME ago Arthur had this video up playing jazz after church. I hadn’t seen this man online in years. Bro is THAT dude!! I’ll see if I can find the link and share.
Oh wow! I got it! He reminds me of Art Tatum!!! 🎨 once again it's in the name as well. God is so amazing how he gives us work ethic, then talent. And if you apply those you become what is known as an influential being. KnowTheLedge🎶
Thank you Sean for this interview!! Hearing Art play and speak re-ignited my passion and desire for learning piano seriously! I was truly moved & inspired by his playing! Thank you Art!!!
Thank you Sean! I needed to hear some of these musical approaches. I been facing similar walls as mentioned in this video and this definetly helps. God bless ya'll! 👍🏾
What buttery softness is this? I hope you broke this down on your channel and midi it. Cause I'm joining just for that. Smooth thoughtful flowing touch.
Sean thank you for this video. It has been so helpful. Much of what Art it describing and talking about it similar to me concerning practicing hours on so much stuff. I especially appreciate what he was talking about concerning mental health in balance and you being more than music. Thank you sir 👍🏿
Loved every second of his perf of 'Jesus Loves Me'. He has 'big ears' which means he is unrestrained by normal harmonic restraints and can apply anything in his imagination that will work. I just heard bassist, Victor Wooton say, there are no wrong notes! I would say Art might understand this and say the same thing.
You can listen to the full album on RU-vid. I strongly recommend that you purchase this album. I was so impressed that I bought the album! Support musicians!
@@SeanWilsonPiano By the way, I've listened to this clip easily four/five times since my last post. A lot of what Art is saying is SOOOO true. As a seasoned musician (bass) picking up on the original gift (piano) still hitting walls, practicing that one thing, (Less is more...a la Miles Davis) taking a break (40 years? Never again! LOL) but the realization is this is not a sprint/dash but a marathon. Like life, there are hills and valleys or in some cases mountains and canyons. Thank you again.
It’s like Barry Harris and Cory Henry had a baby, but that baby is on steroids. All jokes aside, amazing playing. When I see a musician like that, I’m more and more sure, that gospel is where it’s at right now.
This was AMAZING to watch man thank you so much Sean. I've been looking for footage on Arthur for years after i heard him playing Body And Soul on a clip, touch and harmony like no other. Does he give any lessons? or are you planning anything with him?
