I am founder of SIFF and I was interviewed in this video. Lawyers suggest women to misuse dowry law so that they can demand 4 to 6 years of total income of a young guy as one time alimony. For example, a 28 year old male software engineer can get a demand of Rupees 4 to 7 million as one time alimony. If he and his family pay up, then the the complaint of section 498a (dowry law) is withdrawn. If they fail to cough up the money, then they proceed with the case. Now, is that not reverse dowry on men? Lawyers who are involved may also be getting a good tip if they can make a guy cough up such money. The police in India are spineless here. That means, they can not dismiss a complaint of a woman even if they find it to be false. The feminists have made law makers to not give police these powers to dismiss a complaint. We do not deny crimes against men. We are not forcing Govt to withdraw pro-women laws or stop enacting new laws. We are just saying, Govt must put an end to false cases by punishing false accusers. We are also saying that just like USA, in India also men must get some protection from domestic violence, sexual harassment and stalking (from women). The feminists oppose punishment to false accusers and they want domestic violence against men to remain legal.
Hey Anil! So this is coming from a woman and a girlfriend of a person who has suffered through false allegations against him by a woman. The problem is even if the society is supportive, the lawyers are too shrewd for their own good. I hope you remember how much Nirbhaya's case was stalled just because of some people who knew how to play with the indian law. You're right about that. But I really want to know that what do you suggest to abolish the dowry related issues? Because clearly just banning it hasn't worked at all. People "gift" their daughters things and then only through those "gifts" the women's family start threatening the men's family. What can be done to abolish these trickeries?
@@shirleycharan8001 Well, I guess( and actually intend to do so in future) is creating an acknowledgement contract where details about those "gifts", financial cost undertaken by bride and groom's ceremony will be mentioned clearly and will be signed under a supervising lawyer. And, I respect you for being there for your bf when he needed you the most. Women like you can help us to fight against the gender biased laws.
yesterday, 88 women were raped. but surely, why would you talk about that. look, gender equality is not a fight of men against women. its a fight of unjustice done to people only on sexual basis. understand that. i am a feminist and also a menimist. but i had rather call myself a gender equalist bcoz both the sides are not asking for opposite things. yes, men are wrongly convicted sometimes, but then why do you think the court is so tilted towards women in rape cases?...simple, the number of rape cases are just too high. thats where the problem lies. the problem is not the law, its the sexism.

DUDAH Sir very nice of you to ponder on that side of the coin aswell else every person around the world by default regarded Indian Men as oppressor and Indian Women as victim.
There's no way we are going to resolve this situation if we don't work at it together...i think everyone understands that just because loads of women get sexually abused doesn't mean loads of men are sexual abusers, that is simple logic and not the problematic issue here
Sarah L Yes it does Sarah - it means that loads of men are sexual abusers. That's _exactly_ what it means. It is illogical to conclude anything else. Too many men, especially in India, are instructed from birth that women and very young girls have to observe a long list of conditions if they don't want to _go and get themselves raped._ With the case of the Indian woman who literally got raped to death via four men and an iron bar (she died in agony two weeks later) - she had the nerve to be traveling to a cinema on a bus with a man to whom she wasn't married. Her rapists and murderers pleaded "fair game." All of them. Four grown men sadistically, savagely, raped a woman to death on a public bus. Think deeply about this next comment: NOT ONE DISSENTING VOICE. NOT ONE OF THEM SAID, "No, this is insanity; This is unthinkably cruel." If not the evil savagery demonstrated in that sickening attack, that sense of _entitlement_ happens too often in India among the men. The practicing of witholding women's passports or other insidious ways of putting women in effective or literal purdah - for women's _protection._ This mindest is clearly instructing society that women need protection from cruel men who wish to harm them. What they get wrong, time after time, is that when you instruct society that certain women ( and sadly, very young girls ) are 'fair game' if they do not observe some RIDICULOUS conditions, you fail women in India. I don't believe that highly-educated Indian men would hold such contemptuous views of women. Clearly it's the uneducated men expressing rank misogyny. But Sarah, *there are are many millions of them.* Stop failing Indian women by appeasing uncaring, (frankly coddled) men. The very idea that India needs a men's rights movement is a Very. Sick. Joke. I'm not laughing.
In formal logic it does not follow that if lots of women are raped then lots of men are rapists. It may be the case but it is not a logically sound conclusion. I don't live in India so I can't make judgments as to how deeply damaging the patriarchy runs...it seems fair to say that centuries of men going unaccountable for their acts have lead to this situation. It may take a while for the situation to find some sort of fairness but let's face it...anyone would rather be a man facing temporary potential injustice than be a woman. Does someone who has more knowledge know if class also plays into this? It would seem strange to think not....
This movement must be spread throughout India........Because 99.5% laws are not helping men when he faces domestic violence... Kindly spread this movement every state....
This movement is important but these guys are doing that much we need social media support and yt channel specific for men and men's right,,there are so,many channel for women like "jfw, fzone, etc" which is ironic but nothing for men in Indian yt is sad
L This is the dumest movement their is I am not against men's rights , but this movement just brings men who have been falsely accused/other issues and convience them that it's cuz if feminism It doesn't work for men at all Just bashing women /fEmIniSm
As an Indian man, I support every right of women, need their protection, against dowry, their objectification, same rights as men but I'm still not a feminist. It's a cancer.
Most people here isn't getting the real agenda behind the movement. Innocent men are falsely accused very easily in case of dowry or rape. Nobody is telling that the rapists or the wife abusers should be let free. We need proper laws which protect men in such false accusation cases. If you all are so against men having those rights to protect themselves when falsely accused then women shouldn't have it either. BTW what had been the punishment for all the women offenders of false accusation of rape or dowry?
How about not taking dowry from bride at all? Its cruel pratice anyway, if men right's activists cared about equality they would work against dowry, right?
Sally Khaidem sometimes woman has to take those steps she doesn't want that marriage or it's a forced marriage you . See a women just cannot go away from that marriage for that they have get that reason
Isn't the central problem here that due to the nature of the crime, innocence and guilt is so hard to ascertain. What percentage of falsely reported rapes would you think can actually be proved as falsely reported rapes? Same with correctly reported rapes...only a tiny number will be prosecuted. The majority of rape cases lie in the middle surely? Our focus should be on what to do in those majority of cases...anonymity until the accusations about an individual start to stack up???
Sally Khaidem: I agree with you... However, if there is a major problem with rape and spousal abuse then that is really the problem. I would suggest that the group of men that are focused on this movement should join with the groups of women that have been traumatized and become allies. Together they can support each other. A man within that country supporting egalitarianism would set himself apart from the people that feel rape or abuse is acceptable. I have experienced sexual trauma in my life so I understand the issues about reporting it and the shame it can bring, I also have two sons who I am raising to be good partners but also that they protect themselves from being falsely accused.
Men and women need to work together against sexism to both men and women. Feminism attempts to do this but unfortunately many on both sides have misinterpreted feminism. True feminism is aimed at social constructs and roles not against men. However the social constructs whilst arnt favourable to men are far worse for women it is clear as day. This is not to silence the voice of men as their issues are equally as valid. We do not need to turn this into a war of sexes but a war against injustice.

I would expect changes in many non gender neutral laws in the coming decades, it would seem we are heading back to a "traditional" outlook
Of course not everyone's involved but we have to look at what's enabling it and why is it so. India is still hugely disproportionate country in terms of wealth and economy and caste system is still alive and well. Add to that how religion plays a huge part in Indian lives, an old doctrine and practices that still put women in an archaic role for the most part. Up until recently in most cases rape victims have blamed not the men. You have men throwing acids on women who refuse their courtship. And from what I read domestic violence are also high, even though much of it isn't even reported. And it gets even worse in rural states. Now I'm sure there are men who gets abused and there are the female who does the abusing. But by in large, it's the unique blend of above factors I mentioned why India is still not a civilized place for women in comparison to most other first world countries.

Ilene B. You believe the stereotype that has always existed about feminism. Since the movement started it has always been the same thing “women want to control men, women want to be superior, special treatment, etc.” if the feminist movement had listened to that you and I still wouldn’t have anything. And women obtained what they have because of men’s help, they were the ones who listened to us, our allies. We can believe the stereotype, but more than any other time in history men have been involved in the feminist movement. If you take any feminist courses, like I’ve had to take in university because it was a “woman’s university “ (men can attend) all the focus is the inclusion of men. I do agree their are extremist, but that doesn’t diminish the true meaning of the movement. Just how it is with religion, one extremist does not destroy the good of a religion
Simple, because it isn't. Courts follow the "Tender Years" Doctrine, despite the fact that moms are twice as likely to abuse their children than dads. As a male, you need to prove in court that the female is unfit for parenthood rather than showing you're the better parent. I just recently saw a video about a 14 year male, whose custody was given to the female parent, despite the fact that she and her new boyfriend had abused and assaulted him.

Karuna Nandy correctly said that all laws are misused - we should address the misuse. But the way she scoffed is the problem - you cannot be so indifferent to this issue. There are been so many documented suicides due to the misuse. The problem is no one is ready to talk that these laws are infact being misued more often. There should be proper investigation & just the mere filing of case shouldn't mean the men be jailed (some of these offences are non bailable offences). In fact, the data you referred to shows that the conviction rate is low, which is a clear sign that laws are being only misused, and only in certain cases are they being properly utilized. Go to any lawyer in India, and they will have a ready made template of filing cases against husbands - 1. Dowry, 2. Domestic Violence 3. Maintenance. Men are given the choice to fight these in the court of law which take years, or else, make a settlement (usually in crores now a days - as seen in the video). The burden on proof lies on the prosecutor but the laws are so biased that the womens testimony is taken as gospel & due to this it is the men who have to produce proof & are therefore harassed unnecessarily in this case.
