I worked on the ship at Todd’s Pacific Shipyards as an outside machinist about 25 years ago amazing ship

i served in the Coast Guad in the early 1960s and alot has changed since rhan but the icebreakers just keep doing their work. Semper Paratus.

through the years, I've heard light-hearted comments on the USCG. These are unfounded...and in my mind, these folks are awesome and their mission critical. THANK You for your brave work.

Thank you US Coast Guard for all you do in promoting safety and defense of freedom of navigation or at times of war. With the global warming and opening up of the arctics, I hope our leaders have plans and actions to get us ready for the arctic challenges as well as the enormous opportunities. Including retooling our ships, submarines, air forces and our weapon systems and communication tools. We need to train our younger generation to man all these challenges and opportunities and the lead times for education and training is very long to be really good at anything.

I am currently on the polar star and worked on both boats, the Healy and star are both massive ships with insane power plants. But when it comes to who is the toughest and biggest polar star takes it for sure.

I was in the USCG in the early 80's. Was being lured to take a duty tour on a southern Icebreaker, the Southwind I believe it was. I was a Sonar Tech. Sooo glad I refused that assignment. 5 MONTHS underway in the Antarctic......for 30 days port in Aussie land? Then 5 more months at sea/ice. No Sir, Ill stay on the big white Cutters thank you very much.

I don't understand why the clip is called that Inside the US Largest Icebreaker Ever Built. I saw nothing of what was supposed to be the inside of an icebreaker. I saw instead 10 minutes about the coast guard

Interestingly enough my ex father in law was a naval architect for the Canadian coast guard back in the 90s. He had been a shipright growing up in Aberdeen Scotland and eventually got his degree late in life. They were refitting the bow on an ice breaker last time I saw him in Halifax.

Was on the commissioning crew of the Healy. Some great food in and around Avondale LA while I was being built.

I watched them prep and pick that engine up when it shipped out for the Healy. Support the fleet!

I retired from the Coast Guard after 21 years. My first duty station was on the USCGC Staten Island (WAGB-278) which was commissioned in the mid-1940s and given to the Russians as part of the Lend-Lease program. The Russians got it stuck in the ice in the late 50s and gave it back to the Navy who promptly gave it to the Coast Guard. I served on her from March 1972 until July 1974. Calling the Healy a "powerful" icebreaker is a joke. The Healy could not break the amount of ice that the old Wind Class (Staten Island, Eastwind, Southwind, Westwind, Northwind, Burton Island and Edisto) or the Glacier. The Wind Class breakers were classified as Heavy Icebreaker. The Polar Star and Polar Sea were both designed to break more ice than the Wind Class icebreakers. (I did the commissioning photos on both. I also shot the engineering photos of the Polar Star's variable pitch screws which broke in the ice on her first trip in the ice). The Healy may be larger than the two Polar Class icebreakers but the U.S. Coast Guard has always classified the Healy as a Medium icebreaker and it was never intended to be used in the same ice condition as the older verssels.

Polar sea and polar star much stronger and powerful and can go through thicker ice then the Healy

I wish i could work on an icebreaker. Such a cool vessel. I'd want a job that stayed inside, where I could be warm while the arctic rages outside. Call me crazy but that sounds comfortable to me

I was on the Polar Star in 1984 for a North trip and the Olympics. My school came up, or I could have gone south. Only regret I had there. It was a great ship!

I've worked on the Polar Star and Polar Sea, I do believe they're bigger.

And unbelievable operation replacing the propulsion unit.

Was on the U.S.C.G.C Northwind. She wasn't the biggest but she was great.

We built one of them ships in the U.K. 🇬🇧 but I don’t think it likes the cold.Measured twice but still cut it short patched right up haha I kid you not.

The Coast Guard's sole Medal of Honor was Douglas Munro who died pulling Marine's from a beach on Guadalcanal before they could be overrun by a much larger force of Japanese.

@6:10. That sound IS NOT the H60. It's the OLDER un-updated version of the HH65. I'm not from the aviation community but I've been around enough of them to know what they sound like. You could normally hear it before you seen it. Sounded like "AirWolf". Then they updated the engines and though still a distinctive sound, they don't sound as cool IMO. 60's, well, sound like a 60. Whomp Whomp Whomp... ;-)

They claim that ice is melting and breaking up in record rates..... my question is, as many icebreakers that all these countries use to travel to the polar caps, how does ice and snow supposed to build back to normal conditions, if we are breaking it up with huge ships?

Half of that ships displacement is fuel. Conventional propulsion does not make sense for major icebreakers.

the coast guard is not part of the "armed services" or DoD military "like the air force," as you said. they are part of the commerce department.
