Now here's an uncommon DVD that I knew was worth dumping! I mean, I'm always willing to uploading the entire contents of a DVD release of shows that have been posted on RU-vid elsewhere with no risk of copyright trouble, but this particular disc is one that I feel like NEEDS to be preserved instead of just one that I WANT to be uploaded on this channel. The show itself isn't rare, but this particular disc that it was put on certainly is.
I've always wanted to cover Inspector Gadget on this channel, since he's basically DiC Entertainment's mascot, so it would feel wrong to cover a ton of DVD releases of a bunch of different shows from the company EXCEPT the one that single-handedly put the company on the animation powerhouse map. I was hoping for my first Inspector Gadget video on this channel to showcase a DVD release of the original series, but this release of that show's educational spin-off is still a pretty good way to kick off my time covering the famous bumbling bionic policeman, simply because of how much of an oddity it is.
Yes, the release date and distributor listed above are correct, and the disc's files and packaging prove it: this DVD was released by Disney long after the company gave up their ownership of DiC in 2001. If that wasn't strange enough, this DVD never even got a traditional retail release; it was intended to be sold exclusively in school resource markets for teachers to show to their classmates. Now, that would make sense if it was a series that was created specifically to be consumed in that manner (like the Disney's Animal World series whose intro can be found as a "Sneek Peak" on this very disc), but this is a DVD release of an actual television program, so why does it need to only be distributed on physical media in this way?
But you know what's even crazier? Disney proudly has their logo front and center on all the different elements of this release's packaging, and even the copyright information on the back cover and the disc label ignores DiC outright, something the company never did on any of their home video releases of DiC shows back when they DID own the studio, making it seem like Disney created Inspector Gadget themselves. Well, to be fair, most people in the 2000s associated Inspector Gadget with his two live-action movies, which were indeed made by Walt Disney Pictures, so I guess Disney was at least somewhat justified in thinking the young and/or gullible wouldn't know any better.
With all this information in mind, where did I get this peculiar DVD release? From the darkest depths of the shadiest thrift store in the world, no doubt! Well, actually...I just rented it from my local library, if the stickers on the cover seen in this video's thumbnails weren't enough of a clue. I was just on the lookout for a DVD release of ANY WildBrain-owned series with the sole intention of dumping its contents on this channel, and this just so happened to be the first one I laid my eyes on. Oh man, did I have no idea how big of a rabbit hole one visit to the library could lead me down.
