Hunting for the perfect gearing for hard enduro has brought us to try a 12 tooth front sprocket. For years, I've run 13 on the front and some combination out back (52 tooth right now). That seemed pretty low, moving the gear selection up a number (so I'd be in 2nd, for example, on slow single track). The problem was that I'd sometimes tap out second and find that I sub-consciously limited my speed when that happened. To get faster in single track, the 12 tooth helped bump me to 3rd at the same wheel speed, giving me more engine range to work with. I'm picking up my speed in the single track as a result.
It's also great because the new lower second is awesome for technical climbs and the very low first is an excellent tractor gear. The bike feels like it has way more torque, and it's all around easier to ride. The one small downside is that I'm now topping out at about 65 on the freeway, but no complaints as that's all I really need for the short cruise to the next dirt section.
