Installing a new driveway and parking lot area by removing topsoil and using recycled stone for base. We had a little mishap while removing topsoil and loading the truck, but thankfully nothing too serious. Just a little scratch. In this video we are building a parking area with limestone for farm semi truck access and parking. Using a John Deere 310SE, Boback S650 and Ford F-750 Single axle dump truck the top dirt is removed from what was the bean field, we haul dirt away from the worksite with the F-750 and level off several loads of fresh limestone with the John Deere backhoe.
Please share your stories of jobsite mishaps down below in the comments. Thanks for watching.

Lot turned out great! Yes that stuff happens especially if you don’t work with the person day in and day out. Mrs. Elite was running the excavator digging out for a basement and I was in the loader picking up the spoils pile when I try to sneak in to get the last bit begins she swung back. I wasn’t fast enough and the the excavator bucket hit the loader arm. It was my fault but she felt terrible. So it happens for sure. Keep up the great work

Thanks so much for sharing Brandon! You're right about not working day in and day out together. Greg and I are usually pretty good and can usually work without too much communication other than hand gestures and such. You know what made this worse is there wasn't a single mark on the back of that Bobcat! If he had hit my Backhoe instead we would have had a hard time finding the injury😂 As always thanks for watching and commenting.

As a relatively new backhoe owner, I'm quite impressed with your finesse on a backhoe using the front loader. It must take a lot of practice to get that smooth. I tend to just gouge or float...maybe some day.
@digdrivediy
@digdrivediy 3 года назад
Boy, you're right Ken it does take a good bit of time and practice. In my opinion the front loader of a backhoe is the most difficult piece of the machine to learn because you basically have to "feel" it all. And anything I think I know on my backhoe is usually out the window when I get into a different one or something I'm not familiar with. I have always enjoyed the challenge of grading with the backhoe but there is a lot of frustration involved with the learning process! The best piece of advice is to learn and know when the bottom of your bucket is level with the ground. If you can keep the bottom level or know where it is, then you can do a lot more of what you want. Thanks so much for watching and have fun playing with that backhoe of yours!

I never ran into another machine but, I did fall into the tailgate of a dump truck once. The guy wanted me to load his truck facing down hill with an oversize bucket full of mud and I told him what was going to happen but, he insisted. When the skidsteer tipped forward into the tailgate he got mad. He turned the truck sideways and I loaded it the rest of the day facing up hill with no more incidents. When multiple machines are operating in the space incidents like yours are likely to happen. Nothing was broken and no one was hurt so chalk it up to a learning experience. Stay safe man.

Neil... I was a Logistics Manager at a Food Manufacturing company. It was in a very old building that had been added onto five or six times as the business grew. As a result, it was extremely crowded and the flow of materials was beyond insane. To show just how bad it was I drew a spaghetti diagram of their most popular product. That is, i would take each ingredient and draw a line, on a floor plan, from where it entered the building to where it is inspected. Then another to where it is stored. All the way to the production floor. All raw materials were red lines. The product was then partially produced. Due to equipment and space limitations it had to be temporarily stored and moved back to production later. We made those spaghetti lines yellow. Finished goods were marked in red lines. These went from production to storage, load staging and then to the truck. We could not ship direct from production because, it was food and required allergen and pathogen testing. I set it up in PowerPoint so that the floor plan would populate slowly, one line at a time. The management team watched with interest as the floor plan colored up through raw (red), WIP (yellow) and Finished (green) food movements. My reason for doing this was to show that getting another forklift wasn’t going to reduce labor costs or speed up material movements... and that doing so would only increase the likelihood of an accident. The proof... 1. All materials were moved by forklifts. 2. Materials moved over a mile within a 250k sqft building. 3. There were 21 points at which forklifts crossed paths. 4. The main hub was where production & warehouse exchanged raw materials, WIP, and finished goods. That area was the size of a one car garage and was basically a concrete ramp. There were 30 strings that converged in that area. That meant there were 30 forklift trips at one pallet per item. (However, every item was consumed in multiple pallet qtys. In 8 hours, Finished goods produced 60 pallets alone!). 5. That ramp was also where 100 employees walked into and out of production. 6. This was just one product and the plant produced three different SKU’s, at a time, on three different lines... all of which used the same ramp. At the point I showed this to the Mgt Team, warehouse employees were filling out a half dozen “Near-Miss Accident Reports” per week. My Dock Foreman spent as much time investigating and writing them as he did completing all his other paperwork... and, there hadn’t been a single Major or loss-time injury for two years. But, then it happened... about two months later... a new production employee thought he could out run a forklift going down the ramp. The driver was looking over his right shoulder to watch for oncoming traffic as he backed down the ramp. An employee walked by his left side and tried to cut across his path. The convex mirror at the bottom of the ramp did not show he was there until he emerged from beside the pallet and stepped into the path. The ramp was slightly wet from its daily cleaning... The employee lost his footing. The forklift driver hit the brakes and turned the wheel to avoid hitting him. In the end, the production employee had a few bruises and a sprained ankle. When the forklift skidded to a stop it was against a concrete wall to the right and the pallet on the front had toppled off onto the ramp. The warehouse employee was off work for three days while awaiting mandatory drug test results. And... management decided cut a new hole in the wall for an employee entrance away from the ramp. Because of allergen storage constraints, the physical layout of the facility and overcoming customs and habits... It took my team nearly a year to make significant changes to the congestion problem. We reduced trips through the bottleneck by 30%. We cut out 1/4 mile of material movement and went from 10 active forklifts to 8. Now back to your safety question.. we reduced the Near-Miss reports from 6 to 1, per week. My Dock Foreman changed his whole belief system. Instead of thinking that it was good enough to tell employees that they should pay attention and be careful... he knew and adopted the rule that if you design the job without obvious dangers, train employees on accident avoidance and apply safety rules every time; a job will be performed safely. I retired from that job two years later with zero injuries by my crew... and, for that I am very proud of what they accomplished! Neil... individuals paying attention only goes so far in avoiding accidents... as you so aptly pointed out... the folks have to work together within boundaries to keep each other safe. In your case, he appeared to be wearing an earpiece. It was unlikely that he would hear your horn inside his cab. His equipment severely blocks his side and rear views. You two hadn’t worked together enough to establish protocols like making eye contact before crossing paths... it was an accident waiting to happen. Fortunately, it was not so serious that it couldn’t be buffed out!!! Please pardon the soliloquy... I kind of get excited about working safely!!!
@digdrivediy
@digdrivediy 3 года назад
That's a great bit of support and background into the importance how accidents and injury can be avoided through design as much as through an effort to just "pay attention". I enjoy reading about anything that someone is passionate about, and I can clearly "hear" your passion for building safety into the workflow plan as outlined above. It's funny, that little monologue piece in the middle of this video I probably filmed 6 different times, and each time I said something a little bit different. Basically it boils down to the fact that most of the time this stuff is avoidable where environmental factors aren't at play (like you're slippery ramp). Greg and I have worked together for quite a while and we tend to work pretty well together in these type of situations, but I just couldn't see inside the Bobcat and he obviously didn't see me. Maybe we need those communicator headsets like the motorcycle riders wear! I don't know if I could tolerate that all day though :) Thanks so much for taking the time to comment and watch the videos. I appreciate your insight and feedback.

I plow at Grand Rapids airport during the winter. Specifically out on the FedEx ramp. We also take care of the parking and cargo lots. One of our guys was in a bobcat pulling out all the parking spaces and another was in our big loader taking the piles out and over the curb. The idiot in the loader stopped right behind the bobcat and just sat there. I honked my horn in the tractor and waved for him to back up but he just sat there and stared at me. Idiot just watched the guy in the bobcat just back right into him. Luckily there wasn’t any damage but I was pissed. Needless to say that loader operator got let go. Can’t have those kind of mistakes at an airport. Can’t imagine how expensive that kind of mistake would’ve been out on the ramp with the planes

I raised hood took my knife out and cut belt to AC compressor. Said you can go rest of summer in Florida with your windows down. I also put train air horn on my machine. After couple blasts of that never had to have him move again. On ditches machine moves a lot. So having to wait for truck to back up gets old. Few blasts of horn he started watching in mirror.
