Installing a swinging shower door using some unconventional methods. The make and model of the door is not important, since this video is more about the procedure than specific details related to the product itself.
The kit came with stainless steel mounting screws for the hinge side frame, but they were too short to reach the framing inside the wall. I bought longer ones to replace the two at the top of the frame to anchor it better, since that carries the bulk of the weight of the door.
Here are some ways that you can help support the work I do in making these videos:

Maxx needs to add your video to their website, or at very least change their instructions. I found out the hard way that you were exactly right about attaching the door before installing the wall frame on the opposite side of the hinge wall. I now have a hole exposed on my marble threshold. Not impressed! I am very much a handy man... have been renovating homes for over 30 years and have always had compliments on my work, so this was not a rookie mistake, just wrong instructions. Good for you for making this video, I wish I had of watched it before installing the wall frame. People...Listen to this man, he knows what he’s talking about!

A center punch on tiles? I can't unsee tiles breaking in my mind. There are special drill bits extra for tiles. I didn't know them either until they came included with my shower doors. You did it great and thought of the important things. And I personally wouldn't mind the slots behind this rail.

Mate fantastic video, thank you! I just installed a frameless pivot door and noted your trouble with the drilling. I drilled 2 holes and then broke the bottom tile! I knew I should've used my angle grinder, which I did for the rest of the holes. Anyway, the crack in the tile ran vertically (PHEW!) and is hidden by the metal frame. I knew I should've used the grinder for the holes but nope, I'm a stubborn fella and wanted to do it right (?). I've drilled all kinds of masonry before except porcelain tile. 10 minutes per hole. Wow. Or 3 minutes to grind all 5.

Glass drill works wonders on tile to get the hole. Sharp profiled carbide bit really does a good job making the initial hole through the tile, then you change to a regular SDS masonry drill when you are on the tile adhesive and the wall.

When I drill into ceramic tiles I start drilling counter clockwise, so you can set up a nice and smooth round reference to start drilling. This helps to remove the hard surface of the tile. I even use the hammer function, but on low velocity and on a slow and steady drilling, not pressing the drill trigger completely. After this, I change the rotation and drill normally, with the hammer function too.

Great video John. Regarding your usage of silicone caulk- I'm in the process of rehabbing my 30 year old ceramic tile shower with a glass shower door. My old shower door has the same basic design as the door you installed. My shower door has weeped water from the bottom corners of door, where the aluminum extrusion meets the corner of the tile, since the day we moved in. When I removed the door, I was expecting to see old silicone caulk, IN ALL THE PLACES that you caulked, but there wasn't any caulk. No wonder the damn thing leaked all these years! Your video confirmed my thoughts on all the places I need to caulk when I reinstall the old door. People are thinking, "Why are you reinstalling a 30 year old shower door?". We're selling the house and I just want to make the shower clean and watertight - Let the next owner invest in a new bathroom.

I never thought to grind out slots before, but it's getting covered anyway so why not! However, I used a Milwaukee 1/4" diamond grit hole saw bit, the shank type so it fit in my impact drill, my favorite tool on the planet. The bit works wonders with porcelain tiles just keep adding water to help the cutting process and cool the bit down, or spitting on where you're drilling if no third hand is present to spritz water, sorry for being gross. I'm very sure you know this already John, but I figured I'd throw it out there. I love your shower and how hard your working on the renovation. I'm excited for you and I'm looking forward to seeing more!

When I have to make holes in hard tiles I usually use a dremel with a tungsten carbide rough milling bit. With 20k rpm the material starts glowing at the contact point, so the thing can crack if not careful. But it's faster than grinding through the usual way with the cordless drill, like you started out. :)

Good call not putting silicone on both sides and trapping water inside that's something most people wouldn't think of. I'm not sure why your instructions didn't mention but standard procedure on pretty much every shower door I've installed (Plumber for over 10 years) is to silicone the outside rather than the inside. That way if any water water gets in there (for instance through the seam where the piece with the magnetic strip is fitted into the door jam) is stays on the "wet" side of the silicone rather than getting out of the shower. I doubt you'll have any issues leaving it as is but thought it should be mentioned for some of the other people watching this video for advice. Other than that the install looks great, I've known plenty of contractors who do everything they can to avoid installing shower doors.

JasonWin my shower door installer sealed the outside of the trim and water eventually made its way from the grout under the trim (that area never seemed to dry out after a shower) and over the course of a few years, leaked down into my kitchen in the lower floor. I sealed up the inside of the trim and that seemed to work until the silicon eventually wore away with shower cleaning over the years later. Time to clean up the old sealant and re-apply I suppose.

Hi John, I know all about the problems with drilling into porcelain tiles and the drills for the porcelain are expensive and basically rubbish, however over in the UK we use Bosch blue multi construction drill bits and these tend to work slot better, with these drills you could get a couple of holes drilled if you keep dipping the bit into water to cool it down. Keep up the good work. Stewart

As a tile guy don't use anything besides diamond on any tile. Use a diamond bit for your holes. You can always make it a hair bigger and use silicone to fill the extra room, or use a longer screw to screw into the studs. You've got to mark the studs before you set the tiles, i normally mark on the ceiling and go off of that. Edit: i forgot to say when you drill the holes use a wet grout sponge to keep the bit cool otherwise your $25 diamond bit will burn up after the 3rd hole.
@SnowsLife

I think the only reason why the manufacturer doesn't want you to seal these pieces shut is because condensate is going to form inside. I would have sealed everything except the bottom parts that face the shower to allow the water to return in the shower ( I am assuming you gave that bottom trim of porcelain a pitch towards the shower ) . Great video as always ! Unconventional method for sure , but I dont see an issue with the install.

Do you have a video showing the installation of the concrete shower base? I saw there is one where you do the pebble tile, but the base was already there when that video started. Thanks!
@cineMATTics101
@cineMATTics101 6 лет назад
Great stuff! Why the instructions do not mention sealing the inside of the trim is weird. I had a similar door installed in my shower and the instructions mentioned to seal the OUTSIDE of the trim. The installer followed the instructions and water eventually seeped through the tile and underlay and slowly made it to the kitchen ceiling on the lower floor. I sealed the INSIDE of the trim much like you just did and that seemed to do the trick. Funny thing is, after 10 years of cleaning the shower, the silicon started wearing away and proceeded to leak into the kitchen again. My next honey-do listed item is to remove all the old silicon, take apart the shower door, clean everything up again and reinstall and seal everything up. Makes me wonder if the look of tile is worth all this trouble. The tile install was A+ job by qualified tiler, but shower seems to leak a little at the door and corners.

inexperienced question here - i've seen you use the roof tiles for a 'gasket', but i don't think i've seen you screw the base board (of whatever wall) into the floor. i know it's got to be supported, so did you screw it in, or did i just miss that?

That tiling looks great. Question regarding the door; the kit comes with metal framing that you can cut to size but the glass door itself is obviously a fixed size - does that mean they sell the kit with a few different sizes of glass door? Also when you framed out the walls did you make the width of that opening a standard size or had you bought the shower door in advance and made the width to accommodate that particular door?

you can definitely use a hammer drill on tile, just not at the beginning, you have to break through the top coat first, don't know if that works on all tiles though.
@IBuildItHome
@IBuildItHome 6 лет назад
Sure you "can" use it, but you can also use a rocket grenade or a speeding locomotive to make holes in tiles. A hammer drill will blow out the back of the tile and greatly increase the chance of cracking it, unless it's backed by concrete or concrete block.
