Watched this video several times between last evening and now and hunted for oat groats in pantry and discovered I had buckwheat groats I purchased to make a bread from Jill Daltons plant based channel and substituted for the oat ones. Who would have thought this grout could make such a wonderful dish-glad I invested in an instapot and busy following all your videos as yours is the food curriculum I am choosing at present. Grateful for all the energy/ effort you have obviously poured into this wonderful channel🙏🏻

Big fan of oat groats! I cook 2C groats, 5C DIY cold broth (add water if not enough broth available), finely chopped fairly large onion, lots of garlic finely chopped, some ginger, a few shallots to a large steel bowl, put 1-2 inches water in the 6-quart IP insert, and do 45M high pressure. When it's done, I add the acorn squash that I steamed previously in IP (separate the seeds because they're fabulous roasted) and I add other stuff to the groat/acorn squash bowl during the week. Soooo good!!

Thanks for posting. This is now my go-to Groat recipe! PERFECT results! - For those who forgot - it is 3 cups BOILING water in the Instapot with 2 cups of groats, pressure cooked for 5 minutes and left to sit for 2 hours. I add a little salt to mine, I think it adds to the flavor.

Yes you can cook them in a stove top pressure cooker. The Instant Pot is just a preprogrammed pressure cooker.

question: on the Bob's whole groats package, it says "1 cup" of groats to 3 cups of water, but you say 2 cups of groats. The package recipe is for cooking on a stove top. Is the use of the IP pressure cooker the reason for doubling the groats?

Hi, Tami. Thanks so much for all the info on Nutmeg Notebook! I’ve made these oat groats twice in my mini Instant Pot. They were delicious! But the first time I got the Food Burn message and had to scrub the bottom of my IP container. So second time I used an extra 1/2 cup water and I still got Food Burn and it also overflowed a bit. So I’ll use my 8-quart next time. Anyone else have the Food Burn problem?

We eat Steele cut oats. We put one cup of oats with 4 cups water in a pot. We bring it to a boil, turn them off and leave them over night with the lid on. When we get up in the morning they are cooked. We put them in 2 bowls, microwave and breakfast is ready. Fast and easy and healthy and cheap and delicious!

FYI, (RE: GF), Oats are not normally safe if you have an allergy, only the GF certified oats are safe. Wheat contamination can also happen during harvesting (sharing equipment) and neighboring fields might have wheat so an occasional wheat plant can end up in the oat harvest.. As an allergy sufferer I hate the tern naturally GF (it mixes marketing with allergen safety). I love groats too :-)

Where are you buying oat groats these days? Does your Whole Foods still sell them packaged near the bulk bins? Thank you!

XXXXXX when you batch cook, do you ever freeze baked potatoes or raw cauliflower? How to prevent them from getting mushy and water separate from the frozen potato or frozen cauliflower? Thanks.XXXXXXX
@NutmegNotebook
@NutmegNotebook 4 года назад
We do not freeze the potatoes as we are cooking only a weeks worth at time, If I wind up needing to freeze cauliflower it only gets used in a soup (blended) as it does get mushy.

Thanks Tami, so do the cooked oat groats keep for 1 week in the refrigerator?
@NutmegNotebook
@NutmegNotebook 3 года назад
They are Probably good for 3 to 5 days. I put a container of what I am going to use for couple of days in the refrigerator and always freeze what I am not going to use right away.

I’ve only made them this way in a pressure cooker. Google it and see if you can find a stove top method.

Can you please share your where you purchased your tea kettle?
@NutmegNotebook
@NutmegNotebook 6 лет назад
amzn.to/2MS7brt above is the amazon link, it is chrome plated solid copper so it is quite expensive for a tea kettle, but we have had it for many years (at least 15) and it still looks new!, heats up very fast, Made in England, and reminds us of our Grand Mothers ;) we found ours at Williams Sonoma, they are $10 more than our Amazon link.

My big concern is will eating oat groats make you drowsy or mentally lethargic? I experience this with most grains. Not good when I have to work!

I wonder if it would make any difference if the oat groats were soaked overnight prior to cooking? Anybody?
@NutmegNotebook
@NutmegNotebook 5 лет назад
I don't want them to be soaked because I don't want them to get soft and mushy. This method is to turn out oat groats that are more like cooked brown rice and not like porridge. Be sure to subscribe and visit our blog for lots more recipes. www.nutmegnotebook.com
