After a promising start we come to Interlagos, one of the greatest circuits in racing. In Formula 1 98, however, this track certainly doesn't feel like it...

This is round two of my playthrough of the infamous Formula 1 98 for the Sony PlayStation by Visual Sciences and Psygnosis - a game widely regarded as the worst Formula 1 game ever made.
I never owned this game when I was younger, so I'm trying to win the World Championship on it for the very first time, on the hardest difficulty, with Giancarlo Fisichella.

I'm pretty sure this game did feature the 107% rule to some extent. I remember doing a pole lap several seconds faster and only 17 cars started the race

That's cool. That would explain the lack of Nakano. And again, another nice detail included in 98 that I'm pretty sure wasn't in F1 97 (if it was I've just never experienced it). I wonder if we'll end up with any greater reduced grids this season then.

For those that bought it as kids and were disappointed when they booted it up for the first time, I think it's still reviled today! After this playthrough I may even grow to revile it. 😂

God I hope you do a couple of races on the bonus tracks of this game. If you thought it couldn't get madder, do a full race on 'Stunt Park'. It's like they knew it was a buggy mess, and chucked that track in for the 'lolz' 😂

I've never raced Stunt Park, but it sounds ridiculous. Might have to finish off with that as a nice end-of-season palette cleanser. 😂

So we need a alcohol intake - a pinned comment of how much you've drunk after each race will suffice! I was very much a Wurz fan at that time (well I was always a Benetton fan really). His height was a disadvantage for F1 in some ways especially when you have someone who only cares for bottom line outlooks. That pass he made on Schumacher at Monaco - sweet as you like!

Two beers. 🍻 I like Wurz too. Solid driver during F1, but similar to Fisi was saddled with diminishing returns at Benetton, did good work as a test driver for McLaren, and also showed his talents in endurance racing too.

@@TheOutsideLine That he did....nice seeing him in the team boss role at Toyota's WEC team. Everyone seems much more relaxed in that series or Wurz does a great job in making people look/feel relaxed. So two beers for Interlagos and for the first we'll just go with "spirit blackout." I'll keep track of this (might make an interesting alternative to those festive jingles!)

For some reason, this looks a bit similar to F1 2000's Interlagos. Same dev (I think) so it makes sense. I don't remember it being so disgustingly slow and stop start. Great job F1 98 ... only 14 more to F1 99, we must be strong. You know what scares me the most? Spa. I refuse to play this game to prove it, but I really fear that Eau Rouge-Radillion will be brake-turn-brake-turn and terribly slow. It will be a crime against that corner. It will drive like whatever the 1994 version was. And since I refuse to play this game even for investigative purposes, I will not be able to help with the setup ... other than say "Drop the rear wing and see what happens". I think Nakano did set laps, but he failed to make the 107% rule. Which was a thing that happened in 1998, to Ricardo Tosser because of course it would happen to him. Wurz heard the slander and INMEDIATLY put it on the pole. All he needed to do was hold position while Fisi went on to win. Understood, said Wurz, and backwards he went. Sounds very '94 Mansell ... that's two 1994 references, I shall stop. I swear to the lords, I thought that you left precisely due to the overtake on DC. I guess his final tactic to screw you was sounding like someone was at the door. Or maybe it was Shinji trying to get back into the race. Easily the funniest part was you going on a rant on Wurz doing a Berger. He even finished behind Alesi, for extra imitation points. And now, on to Esteban Tuero's home race!

I used to really like F1 2000 - felt like it was a proper redemption for Visual Sciences. If it turns out to be rose-tinted glasses I will be so disappointed. 😂 Oh no you're right. Not only that, Pouhon and Blanchimont will also be ruined... Another cool feature them including the 107% rule... shame about the rest of the game. 😂 DC has people everywhere. The Cubeheads are always listening. I really hope I don't get a rep for beefing with Austrian teammates. 😬

@@TheOutsideLine Only way the Austrian teammate beef continues is if you somehow end up racing with Niki Lauda. That's another triple crown to get! About F1 2000, do remember that it came in two versions. F1 2000 and F1 Championship Season 2000 which is an updated re-release (So basically what the current F1 games are, right? Oh, EA). Apparently F1 2000 is the better game BUT F1 Championship Season 2000 has Scenario Mode, which I really, really enjoyed. The main issues with both games? If there's another car on track, it lags and slows down. How severe ... well, we'll figure it out in ... 14 plus 16 ... 30 races time.

I'm having enough trouble with the one triple crown right now. 😅 That's right, F1 2000 came out in March of that year and was PS1 only, then Championship Season 2000 came out for the PS1 in October that year, and came soon afterwards to the PS2. Loved F1 2000, and I recently bought the PS2 version of Championship Season and had a short go of it - it was fine, but I didn't love it as much as 2000, but it was only a quick test to make sure my copy was working properly. I haven't tried the scenario mode though so will give that a go!

That first corner my God lol what happened to Interlagos '98, looks like a disaster!!! If you put a black/white filter on this footage, it's kinda what I'd imagine a dog sees when f1 is on. Just a lot of shit zooming everywhere 😅 Even had the random excited WHOS AT THE DOOR chaos 😆

Just wondering, (I believe you have touched upon it before so my apologies if you have) but do you use a racing wheel or are you using the PS controller?

For all the PS1 and PS2 games that I play on the channel, so far it's been a PS controller. I play via a PS3, and whilst the wheel I have works with a PS3, it doesn't register when running PS1/PS2 games sadly.
