We are back for part two of one of our most popular videos ever! In this episode Josh and Jen revisit the topic of intermediate climbing techniques. Here we discuss the why's, when's and how's of flagging and toe hooking techniques. Both essential climbing techniques to master if trying to progress your climbing performance. This compliments our previous video ( • Intermediate Climbing ... ) where we discussed twisting and heel hooking. We also run though the tactic we use when trying to flash hard boulders. Flashing boulders is a skill all climbers should practise because it helps hone your skills for recognizing movement options, building commitment and adapting intuitively to new movement options. We cover things like route reading, visualisation and being able to adapt your plan.

That purple for the toe hook section was eye-opening. Whilst it was an easy flash for me, seeing Jen's straight-leg controlled version made me realise that even when you think you know what good technique is, actually applying it when "in the moment" is a different kettle of fish.

Great video as always - your content is top knotch! One minor comment: I think it would've been nice if you explained the different situations for applying a Back Flag, Inside Flag, and Outside Flag. Especially Inside Flags. In my experience, it's often tough to tell when you should use an Inside Flag (i.e. left foot on a foot hold, right foot applying the Inside Flag) as opposed to an Outside Flag using the alternate foot placement (i.e. right foot on the same foot hold, left foot applying the Outside Flag). Regardless, this is still a great video!

It’s a little difficult I think to try and build those into general guidelines since there are so many variables. Subtleties in the positions often determine the most efficient flagging option. If unsure, just make sure to try all of the available options on the boulder problem at hand. After a while this usually finetunes your intuitive notion of the best option. I find that beginner/intermediate climbers just don’t purposely practice enough, don’t make the mindful mileage in order to create better awareness in these situations.

I’m new to the sport and cleared one or two v3s on my first visit a couple days ago. I could probably have got one more that I was working on for awhile if I knew you were allowed to use the wall and not just the colored pieces. Lol good to know

Just some advice about editing/filming. When describing holds you could add some b-roll zoomed in on that hold so that viewers get a better idea of what you're talking about.
@LatticeTraining

Thanks. We'll take that on board. Hopefully the content still made sense but I can see how detailing the hold adds even more context.

Can you please make a video for "Intermediate Climbing Techniques" around the topic of different ways to hold the hand-holds? (e.g. thumb-catch, 3 finger drag, cupping on slopes, etc.) This could be more than 1 video as I feel like there is a lot to talk about on this topic
@LatticeTraining
@LatticeTraining 2 года назад
Could you elaborate a bit more? Other than demonstrating different grip types, how do you think we can provide more information? Is it where these grips are useful or when one is better than the other? The tricky thing with this concept is that no grip is wrong or right as it depends on the individuals preference and strength. Perhaps we can just give examples.
@mahmoodem2849
@mahmoodem2849 2 года назад
@@LatticeTraining I agree that it is a tricky concept because 1 hold can be gripped differently based on its angle on the wall and its position in the problem. I guess limiting the topic to demonstrating different grip types on different types of holds and maybe some pros/cons would already give plenty of hints to us to what to learn. I always used open-hand grip on slopes but heard the words "cupping && 3finger drag" from commentators at one of SaltLakeCity events this year. I'm gonna google and learn about these concepts but I guess many others might not have heard these before like me

Any tips to strenghten toe hooks? Im currently training my tibialis anterior with rubber bands as resistance and it seems to be working, but at 100kg, holding my weight with a proper toe hook is extremely hard.
@LatticeTraining
@LatticeTraining 2 года назад
Bands are good and can be combined with psoas march style training. Tib raises are good. Even using cable machines to increase the load can be helpful. Also don't neglect calf flexibility. If you have tight calfs the lack of dorsiflexion will hinder your ability and strength.

I thought I was weak at toe hooks, and then I learned to hook with my midfoot as close to the ankle as possible, not with my actual toes. This video has a great explanation: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QQgchljSkF4.html

Great video, as always! I always wondered: when the inside flag is better then back flag? What are the benefits? Back flag keeps your hips closer to wall and in general is easier to perform then inside flag. When one would choose the inside flag instead? Thanks in advance.
@LatticeTraining
@LatticeTraining 2 года назад
Yes back flag tends to be more common and quicker to perform. Inside flag can be really helpful when using a side pull/layback, because it naturally twists your opposing hip into the wall (like a drop knee). Back flag tends to be more square on. Inside flag can also be a great way of apply tension into the wall with the flagging foot.
