Some quick tests for a stuck open thermostat and identifying on open in a temperature sensor circuit. The rest of this video is me trying to recreate an intermittent fault with some creative editing by my son Caleb. I know you will enjoy this video.
2008 Dodge Caliber Customer complaint is just that the check engine light is on. Codes found in the engine and transmission computer systems: ECM - P0700 Transmission Control System (MIL Request), P0113 Intake Air Temperature Sensor 1 Circuit High, P2181 Cooling System Performance. I remember Mopars of that vintage having absurdly common problems with ISS and OSS sensors. I remember having one that the plastic tip broke off and allowed the actual sensor tip to slide back and forth in the plastic housing. The sine wave was crazy in that it created an escalating saw tooth pattern on a scope. I'm not saying that you have a precisely duplicate fault, but I'd bet that your throttle surge is related to a wonky OSS sensor reading. The ISS and OSS sensors should be identical. If you wanted to try something akin to misfire 101 diagnostics by swapping the sensors the same as you might do with plugs or coils, you could look to see if you gain an ISS code when the customer comes back next time. As far as billing or even how to decide time spent on gremlins like this go, I don't know. I can only tell you I can't win. My boss used to get mad at me for spending too much time on a diagnosis and wanted me to get a better grasp on knowing when to put the scan tool down. So from then on when my half hour or hour was up, I'd turn in my paper work, tell the boss where I was and then he'd tell me to go back at it. I worked for another guy that tore me a new ass because I was trying to read the service info when I didn't understand how something came apart. He later tore me a new ass because I didn't read the service info when I didn't understand how something came apart. I sometimes wonder how I can even tell the difference between a lug nut and my left nut anymore.

Coolant temp performance codes on Euro vehicles, Scanner... There is usually a temp sensor at the thermostat/temperature regulation housing and one in the side of the radiator or the bottom hose area. What the PCM is checking is the temperature difference between the two sensors given set parameters, cold start is usually when you get these types of codes because of a stuck thermostat. Surging can sometimes be caused by incorrect coolant flow.

That's a sticky situation when you don't actually find a problem how do you bill? I mean technically if the active code was air temp sensor and the others were history codes and the car came in for mil on then you did your job (but how much can you bill for plugging in an iat sensor?). Then at that point let the customer know there were history codes and there is a possible intermittent issue that could reoccur, have them drive it and bring it back if a problem occurs again.

yes, absolutely, the majority of transmission diagnostics is electrical in nature. pressure sensors, switches, solenoids, speed sensors, it is all the same. I am Master with 45 Years on the job. The advisors only ever want to give time for free. I just fixed one this week been to another Dealer 5 times it took less than 1 hour. Sometimes I go over the hour but then it’s trimmed back. If I need a tradesman at my house, Dentist, solicitor etc I can’t get a penny. Same when I buy my weekly shop I can’t go to the cashier and say I have worked hard please let me off paying. Scanner is brilliant and yes if I have a really valued customer that is appreciative then it’s a different matter.
@gooe9561

In situations like this, I would meet my customer half way, considering most of my customers are regulars, and loyal. I would charge half hour for my time. I would make appropriate notes for future reference, explain the situation to the customer, and advise them accordingly. If they return and the same scenario occurred, intermittent problem, I would attempt to evaluate the possibility of a "best guess". Sometimes it's better to "throw a crank sensor at the car" than to have them coming back over and over again, unable to duplicate that intermittent crank code. ( I chose a crank sensor for the example because it's a somewhat common no-start situation, and often times requires the replacement of the sensor ). Ideally I exhaust all efforts to actually diagnose problems. But, sometimes it does make sense to try something.
@cheesecurd100s
@cheesecurd100s 4 года назад
Especially if it's an easy thing to swap out. If I was wrong with my best guess then I usually take the labor charge off. I had a caravan that was like this, drove it around for literally a week and couldn't not replicate the problem and customer didnt want to be without vehicle any longer.
@gooe9561
@gooe9561 4 года назад
@@cheesecurd100s Exactly. I had a customer with a Ford sedan, forget exactly what it was. But it had an intermittent crank code. Had them drop it off for a cold-start, no dice. Warmed it up, no dice. Drove it, restarted, no code. Gave them the option to give a sensor a try, they agreed. Installed the sensor. That was a couple of years ago and it's still going with no issue. So, while I do agree with Danner, in theory, in practice sometimes you just gotta try something. :)

In instances like this where obviously you need to make a bit of a buck for your time but you're stuck finding anything else than an easy fix from a slip of the owners fault, I usually do a safety check, general check over of components and/or neaten up the engine a little bit, visual changes and something to show that you were there and did something, even if it's just spraying some terminal corrosion protector on battery conections or earth points.. Usually on cars like this, there will be other small faults with the car, or places that can easily and quickly be neatened up or safety concerns that you can bring to the clients attention. People are a bit more understanding when they can physically see that there has been a change to their vehicle instead of just a light that isn't on before. You'll also find that people understand that you genuinely care for their safety and value their business and with this you will get repeat work, and the best advertising possible, word of mouth. Great video production on this one, entertaining for sure!

For me it depends on what they are doing with the vehicle. If they have a CEL and want diagnostics for it but no repairs they get charged an hour. If they want the diagnostics and related repair and it's something that the diag and repair is done under an hour they pay the full hour. I will also make a list of issues with severity of need. Like the brakes are grinding on steel that is put at the top, the low windshield washer gets put on the bottom. Intermittent issues though are a bear regardless. The wifes buggy has a P0113 that vanishes after initial start! I think it's in the harness but it won't stay "broke" even when doing a wiggle test...

@throttlebottle5906
@throttlebottle5906 4 года назад
I believe it's feed from the "ECM B" fuse (number 11 I think) in the same underhood fuse box. around that year was like mid changes and some had the 3wire oil pressure sender(with pressure switch) that parallels the relay contacts when it has pressure, if the wires/sensor shorted it can blow that fuse also. control of fuel pump relay is switched+ from the VCM/ECM it also has power from that same fuse. that fuse is fed "hot all the time" or should be. if it's not check the big BAT fuse(50Amp I think) I believe that feeds it and a ton of other power all the time stuff, make sure the battery terminals are all clean, I think they still used the stacked RED+ connectors then and those caused all sorts of issue when corroded up. ** if the big fuse has power both side and the small ecm-b fuse does also, then the fuse box is likely corroded up or a splice just behind it(I forget how they're made)

As a DIY and reflecting the consumer side of the automotive service arena, I think any shop would be justified in charging 1 hour diagnostic fee. Initial visual inspection noted that the intake air temperature sensor was unplugged and your hunch was correct in that caused the error code P0113. You reconnected the sensor and you spent some time driving to check correction of this problem and to determine if you could repeat the other code conditions. However I believe you overlooked very obvious information on your graphing scan tool. In interval 20:00 to 21:10 there are several instances displayed where the signal for the 2 coolant temperature sensors spike upward and downward over a few miiliseconds of display time. Engine temperatures do NOT swing 1.5 - 2.0 deg F within a few milliseconds. To me that would indicate a wiring problem is causing bogus signals being sent to the PCM (powertrain control module). The PCM is setting code P2181 because of these voltage signal spikes. Unfortunately the description given by the scan tool "cooling system performance" is misleading. And if you look for a description and problem solution on the internet you will find information that leads you to believe that there is a mechanical problem with the thermostat or liquid cooling system. You have to have the actual Chrysler diagnostic information for this particular model year. It tells you that when code P2181 appears the PCM is detecting a change rate in the coolant temperature signal that is out of range. In other words the voltage signal is changing too quickly in this instance. So maybe there is a short to ground or power??? So unfortunately the same code will probably appear. Could this also be causing the surging sensation you noted during your test drive???
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 4 года назад
Scan data PID's absolutely do this at times. So not every single degree change is shown, in fact 2 degree increments is actually common.
@throttlebottle5906
@throttlebottle5906 4 года назад
I'm going to call it bad ground splice/terminals, we all know Chyrsler is good at that, they could have presently been wet from rain or vice versa and dry making it function normal. CVT, sure wont function right if there's a voltage issue due to bad grounding(battery/charging also), I think they had batches of failing/crumbling speed sensors plastic around then and that would throw wild signals, so maybe high speed scope probe them. line pressure control, I kind of assume that was a reflection of input/output speed sensor issues and maybe also grounding/power supply

If I go by what was current, it was the IAT. After inspection and having it plugged back in, I will test drive and clear codes. Everything else is subjective assuming the customer’s only complaint was “ CEL on post service”. I would still charge for the diagnostics and explain the no charge for repair. Even if the customers are good loyal returning customers, I caution not to give the perception that diagnostics ($$) is not billable time.

These intermitent issues are such a time suck. Occasionally Ill offer to daily it to and from work but on top of that you often have to put fuel in them and still set up a data log so its still creating a bill. Most times they will be ok with it but they can always bring it back and use their own time on it. Often they can help identify an external variable on when it faults or allow a chance to get some freeze frame data at least. In my work the biggest time waste are dead batteries. Also ive heard the green man causes random check engine lights unless you give him beer and cigarettes lol

Finding intermittant fault codes can be a pain. Do you charge the mechanic shop for your time spent trying to find the problem? If not, I guess some times you win a few, other times you loose a few, it all works out even in the end. Would have been decent of the mechanic to let you know the history from the customer of their vehicle prior to you starting the job. Telling you afterwards was not good business practice. Ah, a Caliturd. A real piece of garbage anyway you cut it. The trans in this fugly thing is a cvt, it has no stepped gears. The cvt causes the car to pull to the right under acceleration, and pull to the left under deceleration. That, in turn, causes the front end components to wear out prematurely. The engine subframe/cradle rusts out pretty fast and badly. Just saw one last week, had a rust hole in the subframe several inches long. Not sure about the cvt, but Chrysler electronic transmissions have two speed sensors, one is the input, and one is the output shaft, which is used as the vehicle speed sensor. These turds also have a hidden relay/fuse box in the left front fender, they tend to corrode and cause problems.

I know almost everyone else found this video entertaining with edits, but I guess I'm an outlier. I guess I'm used to watching your vids for the objective, clinical, and straight to the point information. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying everyone else is wrong for liking it (I clearly recognize that I'm obviously the dissenting opinion here), but it just feels like a cheesy attempt at making entertaining videos. The information is clearly still there, but the editing causes such an abrupt break in the flow of the video that it's quite jarring. It breaks my train of thought. Still great info here, just my personal preference and feedback.

I understand you expect more of an education from my videos, but to me, this one never had it. We took a video from the vault (this is over a year old), that in my opinion was really unusable, as there was no real conclusion, and we made it actually watchable. I figured you guys can at least pick up a few tips and have a laugh with me at the same time. So we didn't set out to entertain rather than teach, we took a video that would have never made the cut and made it fun.
