I had a wonderful chat with Amanda Kovattana about her book, her experience as a lesbian, her perspective on the idea of "the 3rd gender", and her activism. I hope you all enjoy it.

The belief in the trans identity is an insult to our Mothers. I wish we could get that perspective out there.

I have said this many times, that is, it is an insult to all mothers b/c we all came from one and an insult to women in general.

Wow! What a fantastic interview. I went to follow her (turns out I already was). I love the acknowledgment that heterosexual women (her mum) could be gender non conforming. It was very common in working class northern communities not just post war but well into the 70’s. Fascinating discussion.

That means she is queer not heterosexual. That she's on the spectrum. Being with a man doesn't make one straight.

Thank you for speaking with a lesbian older than 30. Your kids sound so confused a lot of the time. We didn’t bother with this gender crap. Came out in high school 1980.

Thank you very much for a interesting conversation! The Thai nation is a good example of how knowing one's religion, culture, and roots creates a stable identity and self-understanding for a person, which in turn helps to maintain a connection with reality.

Thank you to you both for the insightful interview and for speaking out about our collective abhorrence to the perversions of particular communities within the greater GTQI+ community, starting at 1:01:30. You both identified for me what I've felt for quite some time needs to be dealt with. I'm a Lesbian elder as well (67) and not a prude by any means - I've led a colorful and fun life! - but parading kinks and debauchery in public is a step too far. Go do your thing in private - decent people and kids don't need to be a witness to it and I don't want to be associated with it! Furthermore, who said it's necessary? It only devalues public opinion of those in the community that don't partake in it. Keep it in the bedroom, make your own clubs, I don't care. But when shoved in everyone's faces, we all will suffer the consequences. ...end of rant. Thanks for presenting the experience of an articulate elder, btw. Xx

Learned Thai speaker here. who did a lot of work with Thai lesbians in Thailand. Gender in Thailand is fascinating. Her portrait is familiar. But Thai does have words for sex, using phet. There also are gendered pronouns used outside of family, casual ocntexts, in some pop songs, and in most writing. Femme = dee (from Lady) -- nowadays the kids have more terms. There is a movement of trans men now. SRS developed largely vis the sex industry (and it's still a leader in this surgery).
@bastetowl3258

do you mean it was mostly ladyboys in the p0rn industry getting SRS in thailand, or were the foreigners coming to the country to get surgery also a part of the p0rn industry?
@arawilson

@@bastetowl3258 Not porn, actual sex work. First it was Thai "kathoey" -- obviously Thailand had to build up capacity before foreigners would come.

Thanks Carol, enjoyed this interview, interesting to think about the whole pronoun debacle from a perspective where this can't be an issue due to non existence in a language. Does make you wonder why this is so prevalent in the west.

I teally enjoyed this so watched more of her interviews on other channels. Hey, I have a pressing question ...... does anyone think Bon Scott was a butch Lesbian? Or is it just me. There were Aussie butch's that were very rough in those days I remember. Hard living times here.

it's true that toms and ladyboys are not actually considered to be the opposite sex but it seems like trans ideology is slowly spreading to thailand. there was even a thai lesbian soap opera recently where one of the side couples was a TIM/TIM couple. it's better than the TIM/actual woman "lesbian" couples we have on tv here in the west, but still

Confused about the comment on pronouns? I thought there was the formal and female 'chun' and the male exclusive 'pom'?
@akovattana
@akovattana 2 месяца назад
Yes, thank you for the reminder. We, in the West, have become so obsessed with third person pronouns that I forgot that Thai has first person pronouns that are gendered that English does not. Just as Thai has the words, "ka" and "kup", that go at the end of sentences to show we are male or female, the language has self identification built into it. Such self identification does not require that all of society confirm the persons identity.

Interesting! I grew up with many mothers and a full neighbourhood of kids and families and I am very anti-nuclear family, which is why I never supported gay marriage. Altho I am heyero I have never been married. Children really need more than 2 adults to rely on and to be their only role models. I would love to change western society as well. Rad Fem all the way, pull it down and re-arrange the lot 😂 I really don't understand the hetero-normative gays.

@JackieDaytonaBar I pondered over your comment, but I can't figure out - honestly - what your problem is? Wouldn't you agree Carol is doing an outstanding job at talking about these matters ánd interviewing? Why the concern about cosmetic issues? I don't get it.

@@JackieDaytonaBar But...these are the permanent effects of cross-S3x hormones? What is she to do about them? It has genuinely never occurred to me that Carol would want to be seen as male. To me (a hetero female) she is all woman, and I find her voice, diction, smile, facial features and expression intelligent, charismatic, charming and attractive. She is a handsome butch woman; not that this should matter... My impression is that Carol has come to terms with whom she is, with her trans-history and previous gender dysphoria, and I admire her ability to face up to it all, to scrutinize these issues in a bigger and political context, her inquisitiveness and ability to listen and take in what others say - and intelligently converse. Thus, imho, she is actually exemplary.
