Sebastian Kawa is hands down the world's best glider racing pilot. With dozens of world and national championship titles, Sebastian has dominated the sport of soaring competition for well over a decade. David Lessnick and Bruno Vassel got a chance to spend an evening chatting with Sebastian and try to figure out and share how he does it - winning almost every competition he enters. Sebastian was very gracious, open and willing to share what he thinks is important to focus on to win and why he has been so successful. Sit back, relax, and enjoy hearing the most decorated soaring pilot in history describe in detail some of the trips and tricks he uses to get to the top of the podium almost every contest he flies. Just make sure to take lots of notes and then do these things in your own flying!
This was part of the SSA (Soaring Society of America) ongoing webinar series. To find this interview and many other webinars on various topics of soaring and flying gliders, visit: www.ssa.org/Webinars
Thank you again Sebastian for being willing to sit down and spend an hour and a half with us sharing your secrets right after landing from a flight in a New Zealand national competition.

Please share your thoughts on the tips and techniques Sebastian shared in this interview. We all want to fly a little (or a lot) faster in our own flights. Thanks for watching! Bruno - B4

thats a very interesting interview, thanks to Sebastian for sharing his time. I agree 100% to what he says about Flarm and OGN. I had a collision this year in a competition and bailed out and an important factor of the gaggles getting bigger and bigger is due to the overinformation we have about every glider and every climb. If we dont stop here and if we continue this way, we will lose more pilotes and at some point, competitions will be forbidden in public airspace because of all the plastic debris raining down. Right now we already have a 0.7% risc for a collision for every competitor taking part per EGC or WGC. This is INSANE.

I agree and it's insane especially because in theory Flarm was made mandatory to prevent collisions and it it turns out to be dangerous when used this way

Thank you guys for the great interview with Sebastian. In the book the Moffat Method he wouldn't pull when entering lift while running between thermals. He felt it would cost you too much time by the end of the task. I was also interested in your question about the lift band. You asked the question but he side stepped it. I think the quick guys like to keep some secrets close to the heart. Also I wanted to know how he leaves a thermal. Moffat cut the circle in half allowing him to fly though the core of the thermal and accelerate though the sink. I wonder how the top guys are doing it now? Thanks again.

You don't win or lose by those things. There have been champions who used one technique or the other. They win because they are better at flying through the better areas, and most importantly because they are better at making the myriad of small and big decisions you make under pressure while competing.
@johntrubridge8885
@johntrubridge8885 5 лет назад
The Moffat way of tightening up then accelerating before exiting a thermal may gain a bit of energy, but especially in a gaggle is not very clever. I talked to a pilot who, when flying in the Australian Worlds, was nearly hit not once but several times by a individual flying this thermal departure maneuver.

@@tinchote with the STICK, fly smoothly, not hard pulls, not steep pushs, not excesively steep turns, with the BRAIN stay focus, stay trained , stay calm. Be prolix and make your own flight

@@bigwingsful Some of the best pilots are very smooth. But I've also seen consistent winners who are very hard on the stick.I think there are other factors that make way more of a difference.

PS. His name is pronounced Ka "V" a. In the Polish alphabet they do not have the letter V so "W" takes its place!
@lesp315
@lesp315 3 года назад
The Polish alphabet has "V" in it, but it's rarely used. Example: Violetta Villas. However you are correct, Polish pronunciation of Sebastian's last name is "KAVA". Kawa means coffee in Polish. It would be nice if people that interview him know that. What a great guy. BTW: I just made a reservation for an acrobatic glider flight out of Warner Springs Gliderport, California.

@@lesp315 enjoy your flight. Yes the V in their alphabet is only used for non Native polish words!
