This episode is so traumatic, and the saddest part is that it's so real too. Even though they're supernatural creatures, their struggles are still very human. Running through walls or flying to the sky is some crazy camp shit but you still feel for them. Louis being alienated by his family and in the present day 100 years later still being reminded his story is going to be misinterpreted no matter what. The true horrors of romance.

Sometimes I try to really look at the point of view of Louis' sister because I think she realized that he really wasn't something human, her way of showing that she loved him was by laying him to rest. The man who died years ago and was taken from her finally had to be buried. Even when she was mad at him during the wake, she still invited him to the funeral to come and grieve. In her brain, her brother got taken from her into a relationship that clearly wasn't healthy and now she can see he is something else and instead of grieving him while he is alive, she laid him to rest.

I’ve heard people say this is so unlike Lestat to do this, hit his family, but I’m reading the book right now and this is 100% him. He keeps threatening to hit Claudia for irritating him, getting very close to it. The difference now is that in the book she got turned when she is FIVE. Imagine being stuck in the body of a five year old forever.

one of my favourite little details ab this episode is the song that comes on at the very end, when Claudia is staring at Lestat with all that hate in her eyes - the first time I watched it I was like ooh! I like that song, what is it?? so I went and googled it and girl... it's 'Home is Where You're Happy' by ChaRLES MANSON. Such a perfect, icky choice to finish off that scene

I feel like we all need to give Grace a little more grace. She can understand what happened to Paul. She can grieve Paul. Louis was still there but he became a spectre in her life, and she doesn't understand why. They seemed pretty close before all this. She's the one who encouraged him to introduce Lestat to the family, she's the one who called post transformation (openly living with a man) Louis "a better [him]," we can extrapolate that Grace was supportive of Louis and loved her brother. But then he didn't come when she had her twins, he abandoned Benjamin on the floor and disappeared, he showed up sporadically and only at night, he broke down that enormous door, and he abandoned her to deal with their angry, grieving, hateful mother by herself. In ep 4, Grace is angry. She's resents him and jabs at him and lashes out at what she thinks took him away (his "white daddy"). In ep 5, Grace has achieved some semblance of peace. She's accepted that she'll never understand what happened and she can't keep holding on to him. It took her 10-20+ years but she's finally accepted that Louis, HER Louis, died when Paul died.

I actually saw this when it came out a year ago and I was blown away by this show and the actors. I have re-watched it maybe a dozen times. Im also a fan of Anne Rice and have read many of her books over the years but this scene is not in the book. There are a lot of changes in the series compared with the book but I don't mind the changes at all. This show for me is what good TV is all about and I can't wait for season 2 to start.

When Lestat was beating Louie, he wasn't lying when he said that he was trying to restrain himself. He has power that usually only the oldest vampires have (the ability to fly, for example) and could have easily destroyed Louie. When he and Louie were discussing where they could possibly go, Louie mentioned Paris. Lestat shuts that down real quick. There's a reason for that. Lestat has quite the history in old Paris. The height that Lestat dropped him from, Louie probably would have landed about a block over. The song that comes on at the end is actually Charles Manson.

This episode is heartbreaking. I think there are a lot of parallels between this episode and the "Mizumono" episode of Hannibal. Lestat's abuse of Louis/Hannibal's stabbing of Will. Both Lestat and Hannibal are narcissistic and truly believe that their love not being returned in the way that they want and expected justifies their abusive actions. And because Sam Reid and Mads Mikkelsen are such outstanding, charismatic actors you can feel their pain even though their characters are objectively terrible. In the spirit of full disclosure, I am the original Hannibal apologist. I blame Mads Mikkelsen. He is too perfect. ❤

This episode was so shocking considering (as someone whos read all the books and watched the movie) Lestat has never done anything like this, so them pushing his character like that was shocking and heartbreaking. Although they are monsters and human morals shouldnt exist for vampires, this is still so heartbreaking as louis still tries to keep his morals (which lestat is aware of).

This episode is one of the best episodes of the entire season. From the very beginning the show told us a story of Lestat the predator hunting Louis and slowly clenching his fist hard around Louis's heart. The scene where Lestat beats Louis draws a parallel to the book where anytime they have a major argument Lestat beats Louis. Anne framed them as fights but it was always Louis getting overpowered and thrown across the room. As much as they're vampires intimate partner violence is a real human problem and it's good to see it handled in stages in a TV show. Sam and Jacob have both said that this was a safe place to explore very difficult themes. Well done to them and the writers. And for the people who didn't see that coming Lestat went to find Louis at his brother's funeral to tell him he didn't like getting ignored. Lestat killed Lily who was Louis's only confidante. Lestat told Louis he no longer needed to work because Lestat had all the money they needed. Lestat would offer grand gestures any time they had a fight. For example buying the Fourplay, turning Claudia. Lestat continues cheating on Louis even after saying Antoinette was tedious. He has all the signs of an abusive partner in blaring red. And these reaction videos have had red flags for all of his questionable behaviour starting from episode one. By the way, I enjoy these reaction videos which are also somewhat reviews because you see the human parts of this relationship so clearly. And Anne always said one thing about her vampires was how human they are.

Ok, but the reasoning behind people being upset is that... this is not Lestat. Sam Reid did a phenomenal job displaying the rest of his characteristics, but the violence towards Louis was never there in the books. He never tried to kill either Claudia or Louis, in fact panicked when Babette set fire to their home because Louis was risking getting burned and destroyed, he forgave Louis' involvement in the whole murder plot, he forgave him time and time again. Lestat even states, clearly, that he could've destroyed Louis, like other vampires would've with their creatures, but never contemplated doing it because he adored him. He is capricious, a brat, spoiled and vain, but harming Louis was something he'd never do. So yes, the episode, tho disjointed in places, is good, the acting specially sells it... but long time fans of the books simply stated their concern that, in elevating Louis' character (a necessity because Louis is a bore and a hypocrite in the books, only finally coming through after much needed reflection on his part) they threw Lestat's real essence out of the window. Two things can be true at the time: their relationship needed to end, but they could've done so without the thing Lestat specifically never did to Louis in the books, especially when the scene is taken almost verbatim from when Lestat was dropped from a high place by someone else 😞 for refusing to love him.
@lestatsbaby8
@lestatsbaby8 7 месяцев назад
@@eliselevi109 Lestat in the book said he would lock up claudia and let her get hungry and people would hear her screams all the way in Paris. Lestat in the book tries to hit Claudia and Louis has to protect her. On the night Lestat makes Claudia when Louis asks him why he did it Lestat shoves him so hard he's all the way across the room. Lestat beats Louis before he kills freniere and when they went to seek help from Babette. Louis in the book talks about pacifying Lestat's anger when he came home. That's a thing people in abusive homes do. Lestat is violent in the book too. But it's okay if you've not read it. Most people haven't. As for how the adaptation works, Rolin has mentioned that because they have more time they can flesh out Anne's ideas and dig into things she mentioned in passing. Lestat terrorised his family both verbally and physically and psychologically in the book. He admits it in later books. And during Claudia's trial Louis begs Lestat to get her free even promising he would come back to Lestat. Victims of abuse make such promises to their abusers. This is a story about amongst other things intimate partner violence and violence in the home. That's how Anne wrote it. But I do not want to argue because it's not a matter of opinion. Like sam reid says, they're doing the books and that's what is in the books. Do have a lovely day and hope you can reread interview with the vampire with brand new eyes. ta

@@eliselevi109 EXACTLY, not only the act of aggression... But the whole scene was done with a dramatic tone, clearly meant to shock, a scene of family aggression. Anyone who has actually read the books knows that lestat himself says that he would never beat louis like that, especially at this level. He may have done and committed a lot of bad things, but to say that he could BEAT up Louis like that is totally out of character. It's a fact, not an opinion

Such a well written comment. Your reply to a naysayer as well. People keep wanting ignore what happened in the books for no good reason. Why?
@lestatsbaby8
@lestatsbaby8 6 месяцев назад
@@byunbaekhyun4010 I think a lot of people haven't read Interview with the Vampire and if they have they've forgotten what exactly happens in the book. And this is especially because Anne rewrote some things in future books where Lestat calls Louis a liar. So people ignore IWTV and brush it off as lies. Interestingly Lestat never claims that Louis lied about Lestat being cruel and violent. He uses lies as a blanket term. Not even Anne was foolish enough to call Louis a survivor of intimate partner violence a liar. Especially since she based a lot of Louis and Lestat's relationship on her own relationship with her husband Stan who she said was controlling early in their marriage. Secondly people seem to forget that this is a fictional story with fictional characters in a fictional universe. The main point of fiction is to explore things and I think the show explores a violent home carefully and respectfully. People seem more disturbed by this happening in the show instead of finding out how real queer people in the real world face violence in sexual/romantic relationships and what can be done to help them and also how this violence can be stopped from happening.

I'm honestly worried that because of this episode, the show won't be able to get enough people to support Lestat as a character, to have a season 3. In the book series, the POV shifts from Louis' perspective to being largely Lestat's POV (after book 1). He is the main protagonist in the book series...not Louis. Louis becomes a supporting/background character. So how does the show plan to shift focus, when they made half the fandom hate Lestat? I hope they have a plan, because it's not looking good to me.
@mieroth

Haven't the showrunners pretty much said they are keeping both Louis and Lestat on as leads? So the people only here for Louis should be happy. I agree though that the fandom is a bit of a mess at the moment due to this episode, but Lestat fans are still here so I don't think it'll be much of an issue for the longevity of the show. It certainly has made the fandom a more toxic place though, since there are people now watching the show for vastly different reasons and there are pretty much weekly fights on social media about one thing or the other. Which is a pity!

This episode is such an important one, and so well done in my opinion. Flying and super strength aside - it's an episode about DV. Louis calling for Claudia, telling her that things are fine and to stay where she is even while being beaten is so heartbreaking. I love though, how complex and knotty this show is. Lestat does love Louis, in some way, and Louis loves him back. But there's so many other things tied up in that. Resentment, power imbalances, the terror of abandonment, the horror of feeling trapped. In the books, Lestat is repeatedly said to sometimes look very generous, and sometimes very cruel. And I think Sam Reid does a great job portraying that - Lestat can slide from oddly sweet, to fun and high energy, to terrifying monster, sometimes in the blink of an eye. I hope we get more of Lestat's backstory shown in s2, because Anne Rice did a great job showing why he became the man he did. Thank-you for your reactions 💕

No, they can't all fly. All the vampires possess different gifts. However, Lestat is far more powerful than others who are of a similar age; he has powers that only the ancient vampires usually obtain. Try not to be too hard on Lestat, as we've not heard his story yet, and it explains a lot about the way he thinks and his behavior. Although these first two seasons are mostly from Louis's point of view, he isn't exactly a reliable narrator. Season three will be when we actually get a broader picture and Lestat gets to tell his story.

So... you made it to that horrible part. Something that forever split the fandom, and it's been an ugly character war ever since. The writers took liberties. This never happens in the books. Sure, Lestat can be vicious to his enemies and his food but he states himself in the books that he would never hurt Louis or Claudia, and he never does. So they plucked this out of thin air, if it even happened. There's some theory circulating about Louis' memory of this perhaps being a fabrication by someone else, or at least altered. Which will only make sense to you once you've seen the whole season. And yes, they fly... but only the most ancient ones, and Lestat is not an ancient so there's a very important reason why he can fly when he's not even 200 years old yet. He is SO powerful, and Louis and Claudia really have no idea. His reaction is horrendous but it's a fear response. You can see him spiraling once he realizes that Claudia is trying to take Louis from him, and Louis is actually giving it thought, even Claudia says it herself: "When he's scared, he ridicules." His biggest fear is loneliness, he told Louis that back in episode 2, and his family leaving him is not something he'll be able to handle in any healthy way. It's going to trigger him because he has experience with people abandoning him. When they are up in the sky you can tell he is distraught and hurt, he is in no way unaffected or cold by any means, he is extremely emotional as Lestat just always is, and he's practically begging Louis to set him free by telling him that he will never love him, but Louis can't do that because he does love him. They are both trapped by their love for each other so they are going to continue this toxic dance, either for all of eternity or until someone gets killed. And Lestat can't handle feeling scared either so he quickly defaults to anger, and then well... he has "his father's temper" and when Lestat gets like that... yikes, get out of the way because there's a bulldozer coming to flatten you like a pancake. And yet, he is still holding back because he could destroy them both so easily if he wanted to. I am not condoning anything that happened here, but I do understand the reason why it escalated given everything I know about Lestat, his history, and his mentality. That doesn't make it OK by any means though, and Lestat needs to work on himself if this is truly how it all went down. As always, loving your reactions :)

My hatred for this episode is unparalleled. Both my parents escaped domestic abuse (which included 4 of my siblings experiencing parental abuse in those marriages). This episode may have been heightened with supernatural abilities, but events like this are a real-life occurrence every day. Lestat is emotionally abusive in the books for certain, but I don't remember him doing anything like this in them. Just horrifying. It's one of the few changes the show makes that I absolutely loathe.
@AnxietyRat
@AnxietyRat 5 месяцев назад
I don't think this change was actually that necessarily significantly bad one. Yeah, they absolutely do have verbal spats and arguments in the books. Lestat is verbally and psychologically abusive in the books. It never quite escalates to any physical altercations but it's really not that much of a stretch to add to the horror of this entire genre and sprinkle physical abuse in there as well... I mean yeah it's a divergence from the source material but honestly ...it's not that big of a stretch. It just further hammers in but we are watching a show about vampires. And you cannot put human morality on to them. It was a really shocking, horrible, terrifying change but I think it just ADDS to the horror and inhumanity of the vampire. But yeah you're definitely not alone in disliking this tiny change tho. I don't know in my opinion verbal and emotional abuse are just as bad as physical. And so adding physical doesn't really change how I feel about Lestat, significantly. He's still a toxic, abusive person... And he's known even in the books to have a temper. 🤷‍♀️ It honestly tracks, to me.

@@gabnel1000I disagree. In the Book Lestat just was after Louis money and position. He was vindictive with mortals and all in all was worse than the TV show. The TV show just is more dramatic with Lestat and Louis relationship. Anne had to be more subtle in the book about Lestat and Louis. Was different times.

I want to like this show, but my goodness, they are really making the viewers hate Lestat, especially those who have never read the books. I'm a fan of the books first and foremost, and Lestat was never physically abusive towards Louis. He did slap him once I recall, but that was more of a "snap out of it" gesture. With all the negativity towards Lestat and how the show writers are portraying him, I'm finding it very hard to enjoy this adaption. SPOILERS FOR THOSE WHO HAVE YET TO FINISH THE FIRST SEASON, OR WHO PLAN TO ACTUALLY READ THE BOOKS: I'm really hoping Armand is messing with Louis' memories--that it was Lestat falling and not Louis (Armand pushed a weakened Lestat off a tower, so maybe Armand switched the persons and scenarios involved and planted that in Louis' memories?), Antoinette does not exist in the books (even if she is supposed to be the female version of Antoine, Lestat made him more as a brother and protégé), and Claudia was definitely the one who dealt the final blow to Lestat. Unless the show does something along those lines, Lestat would never be redeemed in the eyes of those who don't truly know his story.

The show is absolutely making me DESPISE Lestat 😂 so much so that I wanna see Armand Santiago and the other Theatre Vampires put him through the wringer next season!

@@PerfectlyImperfect93 That's a shame!😅 I hope that a lot of what Louis remembers is exaggerated, or best case scenario (for me at least), that fake memories are being planted in his head by a certain someone. I hate how the show is portraying Lestat, but Sam Reid is growing on me, and I wouldn't mind seeing more of him next season... even if that includes him being "put through the wringer"😣

I don't have interest or knowledge about the books but IMO once season two comes out and the audience sees Lestat is not the only monster in the show I think the perception will start shifting. I understand it must be upsetting for TVC fans to see some of the changes they incorporated (such as this) but idk I'm gonna be naive and trust the writers will be able to pull it off.

@part-heart I hope that will be the case, but I don't believe it will happen next season since I believe it will still be from Louis' pov. If they have more seasons after this, then maybe.

@@CaseyL1760 I don't think it matters much if it's gonna be from Louis' POV, I don't think he will be able to sanitize what other vampires do when Daniel starts to question the whole thing and what went down, I also think it's very counterproductive to assume absolutely everything Louis says is a lie, in that case there's nothing to be invested in if we assume everything the protagonist told us from the beginning was fake, his POV will matter as much as Lestat's, I'd like to think they will be able to balance it and make it more nuanced for TV audiences to root for them as a couple again if they intent to keep their relationship the main running theme throughout the series.

I hated this episode. Made me hate his character and their relationship. I liked them together (despite the red flags) up until then.

This episode was where the show started to lose me. I watched the rest of the season, but I’m not sure I’ll watch season 2.

Please don’t be so hard on Lestat.. please.. When you get to the book “The Vampire Lestat” I think you’ll understand both sides of the story a bit better… or not. 🧛🏻‍♂️

God, I'm so annoyed with Louis! He's talking about Lestat's sadistic upbringing while he goes to him for advice, wants Lestat to be the one to solve everything, wants Lestat to bring the victim to them, and blames him for Claudia being here because of him. What the hell? Louis dragged Claudia to Lestat's mansion, begged him to save Claudia, make her a vampire, and now blames him for Lestat doing all of this? He's fucking kidding me.
