It was very hard growing up INTP hearing the phrase " you can be anything you put your mind to" early on I heard I can be EVERYTHING!!! After 30 years of drifting jobs, divorce, and continual frustration to be "EVERYTHING", I had to conclude that I had to narrow my scope and focus to something specific area I have a great interest in and dive in 100%.

100% INTP. I think I'm predominantly a Harmonizing subtype, but looking at my history I cycle through all the subtypes. In highschool, my interests were split between math, computer, and fine arts. I studied Computer Science in university, and developed a career in IT Support. Meanwhile, I trained in karate, earned my 4th degree black belt, and started my own dojo. I was successful as an instructor, but not as a business owner. I later got back to IT support and added consulting to my portfolio. Lately, I've been playing with resin casting as a hobby. I've told a few people in different conversations that I'm a great #2, but not a good #1. Well meaning people say I'm downplaying myself when I say that, but they don't get where I'm coming from. So it was very validating when you talked about INTP being ok with leading, but not wanting that role. Great podcast! Thank you!

I followed a similar path, but left tech because of the subculture at Microsoft...I hated working there with all of my being and learned at 22 that heart attacks and panic attacks feel similar. I went on to be really good at my chosen field, which was pest control of all things (because I worked alone for the most part). I got jaded with that, and Covid hit and now I am back in tech, but under my lead, and I am making actual things I am passionate about that also serve a function for others. I learned how to push myself and also to switch gears when I get bored of what I start, all while keeping the initial passion warm on the back burner.

Ok, this was fascinating! I am INTP and I identified a little bit with the creative type, but I float between all the different types based in the needs at the moment. I have been very disappointed, though, because you didn't mention Paramedic. I have been a paramedic for more than 2 decades, and use data, and matrices, and, often techniques you described in harmonizing. What most people miss is that you *can't* be empathetic, as a paramedic, you must be compassionate, but have to be separate and analytical when chaos is happening.
@CricketRodeo

Thanks for mentioning that! I've been interested in being a paramedic at times...not sure if I would enjoy it though. I just don't know how I could handle seeing dead people (especially kids) in car accidents, etc, being a parent already struggling with insomnia...I imagine it would keep me up at night.

Although engineer seems like the right pick for an INTP, for a creative INTP it is very difficult, because technical spaces are filled with norms and standards & people who like that. Luckily I've found a place that was more of a playing field for inventors & I think it is very likely most of my collegues had the same wiring. Unfortunately I had to move, still not sure what to do for work exactly. I rather do some creative machining/wood working/psychology/gardening than engineering within norms and standards. Maybe the best short description of what drives me is ''someone who finds joy in finding the most creative and best solutions for unsolveable problems.''

i think I'm the same as you. I've tried engineering and anything very technical but it was really stressful. on other hand, I find myself really engaging with anything doing with hands especially when I hold scissors, my creative ideas for DIY craft projects just pop in easily.

I am a dominant INTP and I am fascinated by this. I spent a lot of time doubting my “intpeeness” because I tend to be more dominant and argumentative when I am certain about a topic. I didn’t match much the stereotype. I can take leadership whenever I notice it’s needed (because I can’t stand lack of coordination) even though I prefer not to. I recently graduated with a degree in stats with emphasis in decision sciences, and I have been dreaming with a career as an “advisor”. Have been applying for positions on policy analysis data science etc. it’s so cool to see how accurate this is and get some validation that I am on the right path utilizing my strengths. Thank you!!!

Great Video! I am an INTP, and I think just by listening to your description I am a mishmash of creative/ Harmonizing types. I have an associates in electronics. Trade type school is all I could muster because back then I knew I would be arguing with college professors all the time. I just wouldn't be able to write papers based on the lies that are sold in out education system. So after a brief stint in the Air Force and several minor jobs I ended up hiring on with AT&T. It was good pay. Not very inspiring but the money made good for my hobbies (computer programming and music). I worked for them for Twenty Three years. In the last seven years disaster struck on a personal level. In fact I will compress that to the last three years of that Twenty Three. My wife of Twenty Eight years died of cancer. A year later to within three weeks my Dad died of slip and fall. This all began by the way in February of 2020, that period when the world went surreal. A couple weeks after my Dad died my favorite aunt took the vax and was dead four days later. So then comes my company saying everyone has to take the vax or not stay there. I think I was at my wits end at that point. I think I had an underlying rage at the world. Everything in my life had turned into some kind of surreal nightmare. So I left AT&T along with leaving a half a million dollar pension on the table (because I needed two more years for that). So at (now) Fifty four I am starting all over and seeking something I can enjoy and make money at. I moved to the middle of nowhere in West Texas to get away from the city. And there are no jobs out here that pay anything much. It maybe wasn't a smart move on my part but I thought I could find or make something online. I just didn't realize how much I was messed up from losing my wife. Only this month (July 7th) I had some sort of breakthrough. I the space of 24 hours it was as if the weight of the world was lifted from my shoulders. It was incredible. I knew the weight was there but I couldn't find a way to process it. And then after all that time in the middle of the night I wake up and start sobbing. I just couldn't stop. for thirty minutes this went on. But it wasn't sadness. It was relief and gratitude. I could feel it was gone and I was/am so thankful. I still have the sadness when I think about the losses but it no longer encompasses my world. I wonder what the world would be like if everyone could have their burdens relieved like this. So I am very upbeat now (although a bit nervous with no income), and looking for what is next. Interestingly enough I have always been great at talking to people one on one. And it surprises me because they seem to be able to tell me very personal things without me knowing them hardly any time at all. That has happened so many times in my life I can't remember them all. So your video makes me think I should go after something in that vein. But I suppose that would be more college that I don't have. And money that I don't have now. Anyway you said to tell our stories. There is mine. If you need a INTP for anything that can be done online, I am available. Cheers.

@@happytobehere1111 That is my issue now also. I think a lot of it stems from always being an employee. I feel so betrayed by the world and the system we live in. I really don't want to participate in it any more. But if I don't they will take everything I have. I did manage to cash in everything and buy an old house. It ain't much but it's livable. But I can't just shut of because property taxes are thru the roof. So the current slave masters crack their whip that way. I really just want to play my music and try and scratch out a living that way but the system keeps you locked in. So I have problems with that even. I love doing it, but I have no faith in being financially successful with it. Music is a hard field to make good money in anyway. So I don't know yet what I will do. But it will have to be something by the end of the year. Tax man says so.

Thanks for telling your story and I'm so sorry for your losses,... glad you had that weight lifted off finally in the middle of the night like that. How's it going? Did you find something to pursue? I just turned 43, still doing bookwork/admin from home raising 4 kids and also trying to figure out what to do for a career, now that my youngest is old enough to stay home alone sometimes. Based on this video I best fit the creative INTP subcategory, maybe with a bit of harmonizing in there. I just recently became interested in watching storm/tornado chases, wanting to try that and possibly study meteorology. I'm worried that I'll spend a ton of time on that, make very little money, and then in a couple years switch to some new interest like I always do. A few years ago I wanted to pursue permaculture design...every few years before I was studying something completely different, and now meteorology? I feel like I don't have enough time left to study all the things I'll want to learn about and don't want to box myself into one career path. I guess that's just a symptom of our type!

This was really interesting. I could identify with aspects of all 4 sub-types, but the Dominant and Harmonizing subtypes have been more aspects of myself that I've developed over time to more effectively handle decision making and working with other people effectively more than areas I've naturally gravitated towards. Interestingly, I could relate to the Creative and Normalizing subtypes pretty equally, which seems contradictory, but it really depends on the nature of the work and my relation to it. Depending on the subject area I find that my interest can be more on the creative side or the normalizing side.

I can relate to the creative and the harmonizing subtypes but lean more towards the creative. It's been very difficult to stick with one job and make it interesting enough. I tend to think so much about the end result that I don't get anything done and then it tends to bore the hell out of me 😅. I am drawn to creating artwork and selling it as well as doing tarot readings. I'm trying to be consistent with making money from these outlets because they interest me the most, yet there's still that explorer within me that just wants to dabble in random things/topics which can leave me extremely debilitated and unmotivated in the end. Great video/podcast! Thanks for this it's helped me understand a bit more in depth about my type/subtype. 💜

But I’m a Machinist and I like making and figuring out how the parts work together. It lets me make the things to see if my theory carried out into reality. For anyone not sure about mistyping, the official MBTI tells you the mindset you’re supposed to have when you take the test. Basically if you have 2 options that both sound good, if everything was fine in your life which would you choose? You can search on their site or on google for the exact words they use, but a lot of people don’t know this is the big difference between the tests. I took the test maybe 8 times once I typed as INTJ and another time as ESTP. These were after significant changes in my life which made me view the test differently. I took the official one last and I was back to my regular INTP.

I find myself in the normalizing INTP camp, so I would add to the list at 39:20 the software architect. Yes, the architect was mentioned, and computer programmer also. Details, I guess, but yeah, interesting podcast.

Are women INTPs statistically grouped more often in the harmonizing and/or creative subtypes vs the dominant & normalizing subtypes?

Would a person who uses "holistic introverted thinking (Ti)" as a main function and "analytical introverted intuition (Ni)" as an auxiliary function, be a creative INTP? Other options?

However, you have to keep in mind that I am a balanced INTP, and social one; alongside with living in Brazil, and work in something only Brazil has on this scale: recreation.

Ok, i appreciate the effort to distinguish between Harmonizing INTP and INFJ towards the end, but the distinction between a Harmonizing INTP and a Creative INFJ is REALLY hard for me to see... can anyone help me out with this?
@Personalityhacker
@Personalityhacker Год назад
Even when adding the concept of subtypes, one has to be very clear on one's preferred functions. Introverted Intuition (the preferred cognitive function of INFJs) and Introverted Thinking (the preferred function of INTPs) are very different. I'd recommend listening to some of our podcast videos talking about these functions. -Antonia

You guys are wrong about 1 point. According to Gulenko Dominants actually mate best with Normalizers. And Creatives mate best with harmonizers in romantic relationships. I condensed Gulenko's view of intertype relationships between the DCNH types directly from his book "64 types" here: I. Symmetric-attractive (complementary duality): D-N & C-H - Have a harmonizing or soothing nature, similar to duality between core types. - Initially difficult, but partners increasingly begin to appreciate the advantages of each opposing role. - Become stronger in tough living conditions. - Provide physical compatibility (life, everyday communication, and intimate relationships). 2. Symmetric repulsive: Identical subtypes -Creative competition initially causes a mutual elevation, but eventually growing differences and mutual disappointment begins. -Serious testing of each other’s strengths begins that undercuts the relationship - Useful for shoulder-to-shoulder effort, training, innovation within a given field, mentoring children, personal development, improving awareness. 3. Asymmetric attractive (Beneficiary): D nudges C that nudges N that nudges H that nudges D to drive group dynamics. - Most suitable for social activity, intensive work, and overall expansion. 4. Asymmetric repulsive (Supervision): D audits H that audits N that impedes and corrects C that overrides D. - One-sided braking to correct errors. - Create psychological stability - Balance dreams and reality. - Best suited for friendship and education

The compatibility model we reference is based on Dr Helen Fishers work with hormones/neurotransmitters. She posits that Testosterone/Estrogen users are most compatible, while Dopamines tend to like Dopamines and Serotonins tend to like Serotonins. -Antonia

@Personalityhacker Good to know. I think it probably depends more on the person as well as type. As demonstrated by Socionics Duality. Where an INFJ's Dual is an ESTP. And an INFP's Dual is an ESTJ. Clearly, ESTPs have a lot more testosterone than ESTJs. INFJs want to tame masculinity. And are not afraid of seeing dsplays of violent outbursts as they do it. But INFPs are very afraid of too many masculine outbursts. Which is why ESTPs are their conflict type. This is why I think Belle, from Beauty in the Beast, started out as an INFP when dealing with ESTP Gaston. But became an INFJ when dealing with the angry outbursts of the Beast. Which is why I don't like typing fictional characters as they can be changed at will.

Lord have mercy on the harmonizing INTP, sounds like a hell of a lot of abuse and abandonment to get to that point. Wanting to be an introvert but needing to connect with people to feel fulfilled. Just another giant obstacle in my life 🙄

I'm also a dominant INTP. It's a bit weird as I have psychology as an interest and most of the skills of a harmonizing type which is the opposite of the dominant. Regarding Musk, Katherine Fauvre, the inventor of enneagram tritype, typed him as 538 enneagram tritype with sx dom. I'm a 583 sx/sp enneagram tritype.
