Introducing the 6.5 BC - a Wildcat Special: How to Start Wildcatting

Remember that time after our first podventure when Jimmy and Mark said they’d never reload again? Well, technically we’re not reloading just yet… We’re wildcatting! Wildcatting is essentially the process of throwing caution to the wind, along with all other familiar territory and off-the-shelf parts for loading your own ammunition and attempting to develop your own cartridge. Of course, Mark and Jimmy aren’t going to do this by themselves, so they’ve enlisted our local cartridge expert, Ryan Muckenhirn, to basically do all the work of making a kick butt cartridge. In this episode, we go through what wildcatting is, why you might want to do it, and how one would even go about beginning such a process. We also unveil our concept for the “6.5 BC” (And you know what “B.C.” stands for!)
As always, we want to hear your feedback! Let us know if there are any topics you'd like covered on the Vortex Nation™ podcast by asking us on any one of our social media platforms and using #VortexNationPodcast.

Noah Horinek I'm a life long user and lover of the 280 Rem cartridge. The 280 AI takes it to near magnum levels and just might be the perfect one rifle owners gun.

My common sense tells me that 280 AI would be a barrel burner.
@14goldmedals
@14goldmedals 3 года назад
Emory Bragg yes I wouldn’t build one as a target type high use rifle. My brother has a custom 280AI and buys 280 Rem factory loads and fires them in it and they shoot tiny little groups while gaining chamber formed brass. He bought 2 cases of Nosler’s best 280AI ammo to have brass after already stamped 280AI. He says the cheaper 280 Rem shoots better than the premium Nosler ammo half the time!
@14goldmedals
@14goldmedals 3 года назад
If you hunt with shots under 500 yards for deer then the 280 Rem is plenty. For elk dial it back to 350 yards with at least a 160 grain bullet and it’s all you ever need.

@@bcjdwbiernfjherwfbowfib It isnt known for long barrel life in the sense of a target gun. But it has long barrel life for a hot hunting round. 800-1200 sub 1/4 MOA, 1200-1800 1/2MOA ish with respect to all the crazy variables that go into that.

If I was to build something "out there" it would be based off of the B&M cartridge family. Essentially a shortened RUM, personally I would neck it to 358, run a cutting edge single feed MTH bullet at about 275-340 grains. The length of a rum action would allow the shortened brass to feed the super long single feed bullets out of a magazine. Should have great long range ability and also crushing close range horse power.

I have zero experience in wildcatting and have never even reloaded any cartridges but my 1st thought on making a custom cartridge would be taking the 6.5 Grendel and either doing an " Ackley Improved" of it &/or trying to get it to somehow work with standard bolt & mags...or if those are a dead end then maybe just necking down a .50 Beowulf to something still elk-capable but with some improvement to range.
@kurtwpg
@kurtwpg 2 года назад
Grendel is pretty much Ackleyed already. As for the Beowulf, I don't know but it seems like it would be hard to create a good shoulder from scratch. Why not take .25 WSSM and neck it up to whatever you're trying to achieve. 338 maybe? 375 even?

Need a new 358 cal. 35 Whelen is long in the tooth, 358 STA is a belted magnum that is made from 8mm rem mag case you can't get anymore. Cutting Edge bullets makes a 340 grain all copper bullet with RIDICULOUS b.c. Would love for you 3 to make something from that. Great show you guys !

The lrx 127 is a great bullet, but with these faster 6.5 chamberings, I think barnes should come out with a 135-145 grain bullet in .264 diameter. It sounds like this wildcat and the 26 nosler cartridges that would take it well and still push it close to 2900 fps or more. I'm sure there are more hot 6.5s but these were just the ones off the top of my head

300 magnum to 7mm I think that’s the way I’m going to go with a fast twist barrel maybe 1:7.5 for the 190 grain bullets brass would be easy to find and sorta cheap and a little more powder without being just bad to shoot I know it’s already a wildcat cartridge but I like it and do a 6.5 prc and go to 22 cal and see how fast you can get it going that might be cool

Not to sound like a smarta$$ but there is a reason why most info about the wssm cartridges is 10 years old. Very few people are shooting those rounds. Brass for reloading them is near impossible to find. And off the top of my head I cant think of a rifle that is currently being chambered in those cartridges. Thats not to say that the wssm cartridges are junk but they are definitely barrel burners liked by a niche crowd.

@5000rgb
@5000rgb 3 года назад
That's a good point. From the 6.5 Grendel to the 26 Nosler, the 6.5 bore is well served. How would a new cartridge carve out its own spot? The .277 is gaining popularity with the 6.8 SPC, 27 Nosler, and 270 WSM being recent additions, relatively speaking. Probably necking down a .308 would fill a gap between the SPC and the .270 Winchester. Of course that would basically be an equivalent to the 6.5 Creedmoor. There aren't a lot of gaps in the capability of current cartridges and many recent offerings are more about getting existing capability in a different gun than about fitting in a gap in existing capabilities.

@VortexNation
@VortexNation 3 года назад
Not exactly. Don't get us wrong - this is a heck of a process and isn't exactly cheap, but it's not impossible. The hardest part undoubtedly is just coming up with a cartridge on paper that you think will work and also that hasn't already been done before. Even some people will probably tell you that something like the 6.5 BC has been done before (Though, after much trial and error, we couldn't find anything). Custom gun smiths to make a barrel and fit it to a Remington 700 like ours are all over. Companies like PTG or other die and reamer manufacturers do this sort of thing for other wildcatters as their job. Likewise, companies like RCC brass do this for a living as well and are there to help anyone who comes to them. From there, the rest of the stuff we used was off the shelf. It took a lot of know-how from Ryan and his experience to know what to look for, but hopefully you can find information like that or have someone that could help you, too.
@John_Redcorn_
@John_Redcorn_ 3 года назад
@@VortexNation do you draw up a spec sheet and send it to a reamer maker then send the reamer to the barrel maker? I always thought that was all it took. Brass wouldnt be an issue, as id use commercial brass and form it myself into the dimension i was after (after getting dies made, of course)
