Best video I have seen yet explaining the cowboy shooting routine ... Thank you....

First, let me thank you for all your great educational and fun videos, this one included. I certainly have learned a considerable amount from them. I'm glad that you mentioned the type of shooting carts that we can use. I'm starting to get into this sport, and all I have left to buy is the coach gun and the cart, and some of those carts can cost more than the coach gun! Anyway, thanks again for the videos, and any other advice would be appreciated to this CAS newbie.

Thanks for sharing this great fun. Too old to do it myself, so will have to go for the vicarious fun. This was the first I have ever seen of this great sport.

E.Kent.D You're only too old if you think you are. I just started doing this at 53, and most of the folks shooting in the club I joined are older than I am. The club president is 70 years young. I think I waited way too long to start this, as it's really a lot of fun! You can do it just for the enjoyment, or be as competitive as you want.

not to old.... we have enough guys who do this that are over 70. that's why they have age based categories

I have to write that, of all the SASS and general CAS matches I've ever attended, no one comes close that Letore (?) Lawman fellow in terms of looking like a real cowpoke. He's got the real Old West Victorian look nailed, right down to his face and mannerisms (contrast: the all-too-common, farby "Marlboro Man" look). That dude should be in the movies.

Awesome I am always facing yes but CAS. Always wanted to try it. I also love the black powder. I can never find any of guys shooting them with cap and ball guns

Michael Gelsomini There is a category called "Frontiersman" which uses cap and ball revolvers, lever action rifles which are replicas of the 1860 Henry, 1866 Winchester, or 1873 Winchester, and double-barreled shotguns. The long guns use black powder, and a short-barreled shotgun can sound like a cannon going off. The revolvers must be fired single-handed ("duelist style"). At the club level the match winner will normally be shooting smokeless power and using a two-handed grip, but at higher levels like state and regional, you compete within your category.

Mr.Beliveau, thanks for all your vids and articles..I've followed your work for many years....I recently purchased a set of poly-ivory grips from Brownell's for my Pietta 1858 Remington. They are produced by N.C. Ordnance Inc. In Wilson N.C. As I'm sure your aware,,,, I've now installed them and find they really don't fit that well; is there any way to either trim or sand them down a bit to flush them up a tad? I ask because I afraid with the plastic it may melt rather then sand? Any thoughts on this will be appreciated.

I would really love to do this but the monitary barrier to entry is steep. I only own half the guns needed, a .357 Ruger Blackhawk and a .357 Rosi 92. I can only afford one gun this year, but would like to try out black powder at some point. Would you recommend I buy a BP revolver or a modern SA cartridge revolver next? Can I mix BP and smokeless guns in a match? Would I be better off buying something like the stoeger coach gun next instead? I don't know of any sources of real BP in my area. Is Pyrodex ok? I can reload .38/.357, should I bother loading them with BP/pyrodex or focus on cap and ball if I want to do that? Thanks.

Klingon00 The best advice is not to buy anything (in your case, don't buy anything else) before you visit a local club and observe a match or two. Take whatever equipment you have, including appropriate ammunition. You will learn more in one match than you can learn in months of reading. Your Blackhawk is a great gun and legal in the "age based" categories (most shooters are in these categories) and in B-Western but the black powder categories (as well as Duelist and Gunfighter, and Classic Cowboy) require a fixed sight revolver. Usually you want your revolvers to be of the same type but that is not a rule, just a "best practice" in my opinion. Remember that any cartridge revolver can be loaded with black powder cartridges, keeping in mind the rule that I mentioned. I would not recommend buying a cap and ball revolver. The Frontiersman category requires cap and ball but it is a lot of work to run them in a six stage match. Most of the folks I know who have "capguns" don't shoot them every match. Can you shoot black powder and smokeless in a match? Yes, unless you are shooting in a black powder category, but is is a lot simpler to shoot one type of ammo. Black powder substitutes like Pyrodex are legal but most BP shooters I know avoid it. The shooters in your local club can point you to a source for "the Holy Black" if you want to shoot it. When a new shooter is ready to gear up, this is what we recommend in our club: First buy your leather-decent quality holsters, gunbelt and a shotshell belt (or a gunbelt with shotshell loops). Leather is hard to share and it's very "personal". Next buy your revolvers. Then shop for long guns. You don't have to have everything to get started. Get involved in your local club, pitch in and carry your weight. I expect people will help you out and share with you until you have all of your gear. Then you can share with the next new shooter. Have fun.

Abe E.S. Corpus Thank you, that was very helpful. I was worried I would need everything before I showed up.

Klingon00 this is the same reason I haven't joined SASS. It's a rich man's sport in my opinion. You need about 2500 bucks worth of guns to get started. Still looks like a lot of fun tho.

I was excited about SASS, until I found out how many modifications had to be made to even be competitive. I've done all the other "shooting sports", but now I'm old, and I don't have ANY DESIRE to have to buy all the modified stuff. They lost me at EXPENSIVE!

Mike Why do so many of the sass shooters feel they have to shoot mouse fart loads in there fire arms? I could see it with children & Old timers. But when I see healthy shoots using them it turns me off the sport. These same people will tell you they are in the sport to experience shooting the old guns the way our ancestor did. Well to me experiencing history is feeling the pistol buck in your hands, the kick of the rifle in you shoulder & the smell of gun powder. It seems the only thing the shooters are experiencing is the gun powder smell .
@chriskelly509
@chriskelly509 7 лет назад
it's not a reenactment it's still a time shooting event. and shooting Mouse fart does get you better times as well as faster follow-up shots. again like I said it's not a bullseye competition this is still a speed event.
