Ron Whaley is the consummate professional man seriously imagine being a saying everything he says here (over sixteen minutes of pure information) as well as he says it with as much patience, clarity, and enthusiasm . . . and also being a pro skater. This is the new bar for infomercials and associated personalities.

Yeah, I don't know. 16 minutes of pure entertainment, gnarly, stylish skating sprinkled perfectly between, and tech talk about trucks that made me skeet. What's the big deal? I was like, this is better than the first Real videos. Is this a skate video or a truck video, because I'm feeling both about right now, and I'm mid way through the video. If this was the standard for 'review' videos, then that is all the skate videos we would need. lol!

After riding the 144 mid for about 1.5 months now, I'd even go as far and say that they ride better with 54mm wheels than 53mm ones. Also haven't had any wheelbite problems despite riding pretty loose trucks. For anyone curious, I am currently riding the Elite Nomads from OJ in 54mm and before that was riding the F4 Conical in 53mm.

These are some of the best things in skateboarding. Knowledge, history, and good skating! Can you do a video on why wheel companies use made up durometers? And if the scale doesn't apply, who makes the final number call? Finally, can you all just agree to use the same scale? 🙂 It won't hurt sales, and will actually help I believe! (Same for trucks, just go by axel length and call it a day. Indy's will still kick ass lol)
@NHSSkateDirect
@NHSSkateDirect 3 года назад
Thank you! Skateboarding is the best. That sounds like a great video idea. The durometer scale is one of those things that has carried over from generations. We used to use the B scale for Ricta, which is more accurate but immediately gets compared to what the fictional A scale number would be. So Ricta went back to the A scale since that's how it is spoken in skateboarding. Was that the right decision? Maybe? Like you said, until we all get on the same page I'll be riding 101a's (83b's).

12:17 This was very educational. Thank you! I'm skating a flight deck with Indy 144 titanium trucks and some 54mm bones V6. I now realize that my board does indeed spin around these heavier wheels when doing the straight eight... I think if I swap out my current base plates & kingpins with this new inverted design it would balance out my board.
@mice-elf
@mice-elf 3 года назад
So I tried the Indy mids with the inverted kingpin and they are not for me. I like my trucks tight af and even with bones hard bushings these inverted kinpins made my turns to quick for comfort. No matter how hard I tightened them, they wouldn't get to the tightness I desire. Not a fan of quick turns atm, maybe someday.

After holding out on the stage XI bc of the height change and knowing i was already going to have to buy a set of conical bushings, i got my hands on some 144 hollow/reynolds with 92a conicals. Not that bad. At times i miss having 159 stage X standards on my 8.38....but now theyre designated for my 8.8-9.25 shaped boards in the quiver or the occasional 8.6 pop; along with the venture 6.1s. Ill probably ride these for a bit and finally try ACE AF1's for the first time, still not sure if ill go with 8.35" aces or 8.75" since i love massive axle/hanger for park/flow and nose grinds and cross hanger crook locks. Just when you roll your ankle from time to time, its nice to have a smaller/lighter truck to help when you still want to skate/sesh but just arent 100%. Considering ive rode 8.75" axle for like the last 10 years. Its nice having smaller trucks to lock into smith grinds on coping the smith/wheel lock is a lot easier with smaller trucks, but larger hangers= tweaked nose grinds and cross hanger crooks. Also Nose/tail slide pop out feel is a lote more different when youre wheels are wider on the surface of a ledge from 159 to 144s. With conical wheels for life. 54 SFW, 53mm ghettochild, 56mm 101a satori. Never tried F4 but im in no rush. Ill probably try F4's down the road when i finally try some aces, i still got my eye on some OJ/NATAS wheels for a shaped setup.....and really want to try F4 radial full 57mms before i try F4 conical fulls. So i have some skating/setups to conquer before then. Still the lock/dip of smiths in transition is a nice perk with the 144 mids. TBH the mids have me more curious to try 159 mids now than aces in general. I think ill swap the 159s on the shaped board with some ventures so i can slappy them out of the collection. I really cant "afford" to slappy with the stage X bc theyre the last og hangers/baseplates i have left. I pretty much reserve them for metal coping and pool coping only. Which is why i had to get a new pair of indys. Id say theyre alright i cant give a complete opinion untill i try some 8.75" mids....and some 8.75" aces...to really KNOW what ill land on. Still having a quiver doesnt hurt. Just choose a setup based on where youre going to skate or how you feel like skating that day. XD so you out yourself as the GUY for why krux "dont turn" Lol Respect i tried some polka dot ones and some mirror down lows back in the day when i was still learning a bag of tricks. Im probably riding some of wilsons "prototype' indy pivot cups right now on the stage X the local shop had a bag of em a few years back.

I have the og Stage 11 Mids from 2012 or whenever. Not sure about the turning thing cause i keep them tight af lol Rear tighter than the front for better balance (since i'm 46). As for those VS a newer Indy Mid (Reynolds, Lemos etc...) They definitely seem to "handle" better.

You had me at dream truck. So here's what I can say about that combination: There will be forged, titanium axle mids coming out in 2021 and those will have the inverted kingpin. The baseplate/shaft nut combo will be available in Spring 21. Those can be used with the standard hangers but are not forged. @NHSSkateDirect
@NHSSkateDirect 3 года назад
Sorry to hear that. There is a chance if you over tighten them you can get to the point where the threads end. If they tighten to a point and it won't go any further you might be there. If the bushings are new I'd suggest loosening them a little to let the bushings break in and stiffen up. Then tighten them. If you just can't get them tight enough you might want to get some harder cushions. Indy makes a bunch of different hardnesses.

@NHSSkateDirect
@NHSSkateDirect 2 года назад
Yes. Right now Indy just has 2 hanger types: standard and mid. Mids with a standard baseplate are 52mm tall. A forged base is 1.5mm lower. 52mm - 1.5mm = 50.5mm. Hope that helps.

Hi Ron, great video! I’m skating the Boats 8.8 shape with 159 Hollow’s, 1/8 risers, and 54mm Nomads. If I switched only the trucks to the Mid’s and left everything else, would it still give me more pop? Or could I get away with either eliminating the risers or switching to the 53mm Nomads and keep the risers? I’m 45 years old and still trying to keep a smoother ride for my feet .
@NHSSkateDirect
@NHSSkateDirect 3 года назад
Thanks! Yes. Those changes would lower the contact point and get your tail to the ground sooner. Taking out the risers will make the biggest difference (1/8" = 3.175mm), switching to mids will lower it 1.5mm and the wheels would be the slightest change at 1mm, especially depending on how long you've ridden those 54's and if they've worn down.

If you add 1/8" risers to a pair of mids the total height should be 55.18 mm. Beyond the inverted kingpin, what would be the benefits of mids over standards in that scenario?
@NHSSkateDirect
@NHSSkateDirect 3 года назад
Since the geometry and turn are the same, the benefit would be the inverted kingpin and the option to remove that riser and go lower. You can always add risers to make a truck higher but you can't make it lower.

@NHSSkateDirect
@NHSSkateDirect 2 года назад
Yes. A lower truck will make the tail hit easier and would offset a deck with a super steep tail. If you want your board to pop at a steep angle then get tall trucks, bigger wheels/risers, steep concave. If you want you tail to pop right away without having to get the nose up really high/steep angle then get lower trucks, smaller wheels and flat concave. Or you can combine some of them to sort of even if it out to a "normal" pop angle.

I mention this because I'm going with 60mm wheels on the reissue. But I really want to push myself with getting higher pops on my Ollie's. Mids look great for this. I really wish indy made half inch risers. Does any other brand in the NHS fam make half inch risers?
@NHSSkateDirect
@NHSSkateDirect 3 года назад
Those are some sweet setups for sure. Mike Conroy was one of my favorite vert skaters. I heard he would show up to the ramp in cowboy boots and change into his skate shoes. It doesn't look like any of our brands make the 1/2 inch risers. We usually suggest getting 2 packs of 1/4 inch and stacking. Or 4 packs of 1/8 inch in case you want to add/remove 1/8th at a time to fine tune. Or you could do one 1/4" riser plus two 1/8" riser to add up to 1/2" (multiply that last combo by 2 because you have 2 trucks) OJ is releasing new 3/8 risers around the end of March called Juice Cubes. They're orange and have a little more softness and rebound than a regular hard plastic riser. So they'll have a bit of that dampening effect that shock pads have.

@@NHSSkateDirect Wow, thanks for the reply brother. And those juice cubes sound absolutely perfect for my style! I like to keep my set ups under one umbrella. My OCD is horrible like that. So this is GREAT news. And, um... whoever this may be... can you please pass along a message to the higher ups that they should seriously consider another Mike Conroy crystal ball reissue drop??? Nothing wrong with that set up. You could ride the 54's on standard stage 11's without risers but if you do, you have a little extra turning room if you ride loose trucks.

We are selling the inverted kingpin and sleeve by themselves. Since the shaft nut is machine pressed into the baseplate it's sold as the IKP Baseplate Set (IKP = inverted kingpin). Those should be available any day now (3/22/21). Although if you actually break the kingpin they'll likely be covered by warranty.

Let me necro this vid. I just learned about the baseplate set a few days ago. I'm totally going to throw a 9 inch Ace AF1 hangar on it. The best of all worlds. Ace technology, with the best turning baseplate ever made, and a reversed kingpin to boot. Oh and Indy... Move back to producing back in the USA or you're going to lose your riders one by one.. I have the stage 11 reynolds hollow 139, with indy 1/8 shock pad... Is this a mid truck already? Because without the shock pads i get wheel bite... And how would these pop any better than the 139 stg11 reynolds.. (the black box with white lettering and red indy logo)
@NHSSkateDirect
@NHSSkateDirect 3 года назад
The Reynolds you have would be standard height (or tall) and even a little taller with the shock pads, although shock pads usually don't raise your trucks as high as normal hard risers do. It sounds like you would need smaller wheels to go without shock pads on your current trucks or to try the mids. They don't nesc pop "better" than the standard since it depends on how steep you like your board to be when the tail or nose hits. They do pop easier since you don't have to tilt as far to get to the popping point.
