Cardiac Sciences Grand Rounds session featuring Dr. Vanessa Ferreira. Her presentation is entitled, "The Investigation of Cardiovascular Diseases Using Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (CMR) Parametric Mapping: The Past, Present and Future Evaluation in Congenital Heart Disease.”
Date: November 28, 2023
Location: Calgary
About the Speaker
Professor Vanessa Ferreira, MD DPhil (Oxon.) FRCPC FSCMR, is full Professor of Medicine and Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Oxford. She is a cardiologist and Deputy Clinical Director of the Oxford Centre for Clinical Magnetic Resonance Research (OCMR) based at the John Radcliffe Hospital (Oxford, UK). She obtained her Bachelor of Science (SB) in Biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Cambridge, MA, USA), and Doctor of Medicine (MD) at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver, BC, Canada). Dr Ferreira subsequently undertook her Internal Medicine residency at UBC (2002-2005), and her Cardiology residency at the University of Calgary (2005-2008).
Dr Ferreira then won an Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research Clinical Fellowship to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil/PhD) in Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Oxford (2008-2012), subspecializing in Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (CMR) imaging. She worked on novel MRI method development with colleagues in MR physics and engineering, particularly in quantitative cardiac T1-mapping, for clinical applications.
Dr Ferreira is the current Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (SCMR) Vice Secretary Treasurer (2023-2024), in line to succeed to SCMR President in 2026. She was a board member of the SCMR (2016-2019), and serves on multiple committees and guideline writing groups in professional societies, including the SCMR, American College of Cardiology (ACC) and European Society of Cardiology (ESC).
Dr Ferreira has expertise in quantitative CMR techniques, particularly parametric-mapping, and their clinical applications for investigation of cardiovascular diseases. One of her goals is to advance CMR methods to investigate and manage cardiovascular diseases in ways not previously possible, in a non-invasive way. Another is to minimise the need for injection of contrast agents for diagnostic images, allowing more patients to benefit from CMR, eliminating adverse reactions to contrast agents, and savings in time and cost. Her research group is highly collaborative and interdisciplinary, working together with MR physicists, engineers, biomedical imaging experts, AI computer scientists and clinicians from a range of specialties, to help to tackle and reduce the burden of cardiovascular diseases.
