I've manufactured furniture in China for 5 years and it is physically impossible to produce this table at this price and make a profit. They said there's walnut veneer - they have massive metal legs inside (those would be $30-40 alone to produce), all the electronics inside this table, PLUS probably $30 per table in freight, PLUS 25% US import tariff, would plant the landed cost very close to $200. That's before Kickstarter's 10% fee, and the probably 20% of the funded amount they've spent on ads. Then, shipping costs - the table is over 60lbs without topper, which means it would need to be broken into 2 boxes, plus another for the topper, resulting in over $150 in shipping costs easily (yet they're charging $70). It's so obviously a scam to vacuum up KS money after seeing so many successful table campaigns.

There is really no reason for gaming tables to cost as much as they do. I know you gave some reasons at the beginning, but really it is just greed. Companies know that there is a market for this and they know that some people will pay those prices. That is the only reason they cost that much. Having worked in the furniture industry for years, tables in general are one of the cheapest types of furniture to produce. It means massive profits for companies that make the tables. If anything, a gaming table should cost a hundred or so more than a normal table. Anything more than that and they are just lining their pockets. For these tables, it would be simple enough to remove the legs from the topper and then you could store games in the well of the table. Again, having worked with furniture for years, the engineered wood is way more durable than most real hardwoods. The amount of broken hardwood furniture we used to have to replace vs the number of mdf types that needed replacement was astounding. I actually prefer composite materials for most furniture over hardwood. There are a lot of things about this campaign that are kind of shady though. That vague shipping thing is a definite red flag. In this day and age, quoting shipping before the end of the campaign is already a bad idea. $75 for a table seems to be reasonable at the moment for a large heavy item like a table, but who knows what it will be like in a year or two when these are ready to ship. Asking people to back and hope that there is a pickup site nearby is another questionable thing. Definitely a campaign that could have used some more time to cook and iron out things. Not an entirely unreasonable cost for what it is though. Honestly, this is the first gaming table that looks to be reasonably priced for the costs of what it actually takes to make something like this.

As a woodworker, I can tell you that I would struggle to build this table out of pine (about as cheap as it gets) and plywood for $300 right now...without any of the accessories, lighting, or veneer. I, like many of you, _want_ this to be true, but if your warning radar is going off, it's probably for a reason.

You probably couldn't make this out of 2x4 and osb for $300. And if you did, labor would be close to $1 an hour. Yeah, I'm calling bs on this. It might not be a deliberate scam, but it's deff more than you pay for.

^ this is the answer, there's a lot of parts involved in that table, hinges, led lighting, plastic trays, game topper, and WOOD. Lots of wood. there's no way you can buy that wood for less than $150 and that's not using good wood like a hardwood table. How about labor? I built a table like this and it was $400-500 in materials without hinges or LEDS or the topper.

Got to say I LOVE your due diligence.😍 I'd say - If it sounds too good to be true, that's because it probably is. I have lived and worked in China and I completely agree with your point that they often tend to say and agree to almost anything just to close a deal so that their sales numbers will look good when they present it to their boss. If their customer backs out later is a problem for tomorrow. It's almost as if companies over there tend to just focus on gross sales and not care about retention at all.

As someone fairly new to board gaming, I initially thought this looked great and backed it. Then I shared it to some of my more experienced gaming friends who were far more cynical! Either I wasn't going to get it, or I would get it a year late, or it would be crap quality for that price. Watching your video just sealed it for me, pledge cancelled. Thanks for the excellent work.

Jokes aside, waiting is probably what's the best thing to do here. See if their claims turn out to be true if you desperatly want to back this project. Otherwise i'd agree with the King of random, in that companies who market themselves the way Toyzzo does, should probably not receive our support. It's really quite sad, as i'd love this vision to be true and have a cheap Board game table available, even if that's reflected in it's overall quality

Their timeline on the bottom of the page shows that they are past their second trial production but every photo and video shows the exact same table. You can tell by the discoloration and grain pattern on the side rails. If they are somehow going to pump out 3000 tables, shouldn't they have more than one by now? Not to mention how shady their team break down is. Co-founder but only shows one person, then only lists the marketing director as the rest of their team? I can't wait to hear about the unforeseen supply chain issues or unheard of logistics costs or unplanned manufacturing holiday schedule then the inevitable update where they change the plan or sacrifice the quality of something last minute.

They can't, I've manufactured in China for 5 years. With all the electronics, customs cuttings, welded massive metal legs it's probably close to $200 to make. And then there's the 10% KS fee, the probably 20% of the funding they're spending on ads, $40 on freight, 25% import tarriff to the US....plus they've underestimated shipping costs by about half, it's just not possible to fulfill this. Maybe they'll send out a handful to backers to show it's not a complete scam but definitely not possible to fully fulfill it.

As is usual on KS, Caveat Emptor. I think the comparison to AliBaba is a good one. This is clearly a knock-off of Wyrmwood, Rathskeller, GeeknSon etc. They looked at what good tables have, and figured out how to make something that looks vaguely similar for the least amount possible. Good investigation.

Biggest red flag of all probably being 10 times lower in prices than other concurrent who are known to be legit, unless they are introducing a revolutionary technology or new process, there is no way in hell that a price jump of the sort is justifiable or even credible... Unless of course you're lying and totally cheaping down on every parts of the product in every way possible. Without a doubt you did good backtracking your pledge, even if you had gotten a table in the end it would probably had been a big letdown broken on the first bump.

@PRC533
@PRC533 10 месяцев назад
That's all well and good, but we don't have to adhere to the legal definition of scam in the public. Nobody is prosecuting a case here. If a company makes promises they know they can't deliver in order to drive financing, that is just as much a scam as if they never intended to deliver a product. The fact that it wouldn't be considered a scam in court is irrelevant to the public discourse.
@Tharukan

@@PRC533 That's false advertising. We have a different term for it for a reason. If we start calling everything a scam the term loses meaning in the rare cases it actually applies.

I recall that conversation and am elated to hear you've noticed my work toward speaking better and respecting the platform I have more than I used to :) Re: public discussion vs court: agreed, to a point. While it's still obviously my opinion, the more I edge toward "reporting" vs telling the more I erase that safety net. Additionally as someone who will have thousands listen to them, it's important I respect that platform in a different way than someone just making a comment or speaking with their friends. If I can say the same thing, but say it in a way that honors the above then I think that's the best course of action :)
@PRC533
@PRC533 10 месяцев назад
@@Tharukan Until and unless it actually becomes a matter of law, the distinction is semantics. People misuse legal terms all the time. We say assault when it's really battery, we say robbery when it's really burglary, slander when it's libel, the list goes on. I get that from a legal standpoint it can be frustrating to not have people be precise with their language, but that's just not going to happen outside of court. I think everyone understands what's going on from context and from the standpoint of a backer, there is no distinction between a scam and false advertising if they paid money and didn't get what they were promised.
@Tharukan
@Tharukan 10 месяцев назад
@@PRC533 I get where you are coming from and I agree in general. I'd disagree in this specific case, though, since I'd argue it's more than semantics here. The difference is the intent, and I'd say that is also an important distinction not just in a courtroom but also in a casual conversation. False advertisement and scamming, to me at least, are not synonyms, not even in casual language. But maybe I have a skewed perspective because of my background here, admitted.

Hey, firstly to say a big big thank you for your investigation and thoughts and making this video. I'm dubious and imagine many backers who long to have a small gaming table but struggle to muster (or justify the allocation of) hundreds/thousands of pounds are Def. the target here, and, as you rightfully point out, a potentially easy one at that. Agree, whilst some effort has clearly been put into creating this project (and associated materials) there's clearly a significant gap... Who are these people, where are they based, what is the shipping on this project, etc, etc.
@frankbranham7404
@frankbranham7404 10 месяцев назад
What? Even with particle board and the cheapest stuff ever, being able to ship that mess of a table for $200 sounds dubious. I do think that the intent is legitimate, but with a high likelihood of failure. There is no obvious way to disassemble the large table board for shipping, so it would need to be shipping as one unit, which does bad things to pricing. There are some ideas I like, and the design is clever enough that I would love to see a breakdown. It looks almost simple enough as a DIY project.
@PRC533

Our table was shipped from Washington to Alaska and was slightly bigger than theirs. It cost $800 to get to our door. Their estimate is comically low. They also don't apparently realize that they can't just use FedEx or UPS for last mile on something this big and heavy. Those companies won't deliver stuff like this. They need to find some kind of fright forwarding company for every single location, which is going to be a nightmare.

@@vocenoctum2046 Yeah, this is more often than not the case, although it really depends on the individual company. I'm sure that it's possible to find a top tier company in China that doesn't mess around. I'm pretty sure our CEO recently bought an office desk with tons of space and outlets directly from the manufacturer for about 140 dollars, although that was with Amazon Prime. Same with luxury office chairs. We recently bought a whole bunch for prices that seemed suspiciously low but the quality was really impressive. To be fair to Toyzzo, it's a little too early to judge, although I definitely wouldn't fault anyone for not backing. I completely understand from a market standpoint, having a low-cost alternative for a gaming table is not a bad idea but as you said before it's a hyper niche market. People in this circle want high quality and will pay thousands of dollars. so the KS now makes even less sense because it's not hitting with the right audience who sees this as a cheap cash grab and again everyday people will want a regular table not a gaming focused table. Its a deeply confusing KS that could be coming from a good idea on paper but in practice its not viable. ITs also not exactly ideal when there is a lot of things they are not saying when they should, especially on shipping as that is a HUGE expense for these tables.
@AlarianDarkwind
@AlarianDarkwind 10 месяцев назад
Considering they are coming up on $500,000 after a few days, I would say there is a very large market for a table such as this. Most gamers I know would never be able to afford a premium table. That said my group went in on a premium table about two years ago and it's awesome. If we hadn't I would definitely consider this even with the (to me) small red flags. As was said in this video, I would say this is a few guys who have connections in furniture and saw the demand for such a table. They have no experience in the US market which is why they hired the person here in the US. They don't really understand US culture and so just flying by the seat of their pants as this started. Personally, I wouldn't hesitate to back, but then, except for a few extremely high price pledges (5K+) everything I've ever backed on KS was done so with the the thought I might never get it. So the few that never delivered were never a big deal to me.

We shouldn't discredit them just because they are Chinese and don't know anything about board games. We shouldn't scare away companies like this IF they can deliver quality goods for such a low cost. They were honest and upfront about the materials. Even an MDF table with a decent veneer could be a very good, affordable alterative these boutique pieces we see selling for the cost of a small car. Ask about the factory these are manufactured at and do research on them. Chances are they make millions of pieces a year and this is a simple project that could be delivered quickly. Looks completely legitimate so far to me.

Too many red flags on this for me. I still plan on just building one myself or finding some beast of table someone does not want.

Is it just me or the "second table" with the MANY legs is really not something that will be stable (legs really too near of each other to be stable).

I messaged them yesterday to ask if the second table pieces were locked together in any way, and got this response "You simply put them together and they will stay in contact. Don't worry! It can hold up to 100Kg so is definitely stable". Not what I asked, and as my table would be on carpet, I wouldn't trust it to stay put.

the legs appear about 1" thick, the 5cm gap is 2" you could have meeples or mini's that were an inch or less tall or even taller if they aren;t where the legs are but this is almost surely a scam. it can't be built with real wood and good hardware for this price. they are showing 16 folding legs just for the top... try to price these from anywhere. they supposedly telescope to 2 different heights. even if you bought 1000 at a time from china I doubt you could get the price down to under $5 a leg and that's $80. on amazon a tet of folding legs that don't telescope and are relatively short costs 20-40 at least. just steel tubing with no hinges or labor or assembly would cost a significant number.

I have a different point of view with gaming tables, they are way too expensive, way too much so I have never backed one, they’re not a scam but no way in hell a table should be that expensive, more when they’re mass producing, materials will be cheaper. Here in Costa Rica, wood is expensive but no way in hell a table would cost so much money as the ones they sell in KS, if you pay someone here for a table like that, cost would be around $600/700/800, maybe less, a friend paid $500 for one he had someone built specifically for him. So I find prices from them more accurate. Don’t know if that’s a scam but prices seem right.

No clue I don't delete comments. Perhaps YT didn't like it? Did it include a link? YT hates when people post links.

I think nobody should call out others as long as he is spending fortunes for pushing around overprized plastic. A custom gaming table for that cheap is ok.

I bought a kitchen table, 4 chairs, and a bench on Amazon for like $400. I think manufacturing costs could probably be cheap enough for this.
@TheKingofAverage
@TheKingofAverage 10 месяцев назад
The scale is different is the issue with board game tables. You and hundreds of millions of others are buying and interested in kitchen tables and chairs. You can bulk make those to an insane degree, bulk order the lumber, etc. Game tables though are MUCH different in scale. You can't operate a business making low margins on such a low selling product, nor can you get the savings as easily from bulk orders.

It seems what could have been a great idea shot down by the company not understanding western expectations...
@PRC533
@PRC533 10 месяцев назад
Yeah, selling a product for a price that is impossible to actually fulfill is a great idea. This is not about expectations as much as living in reality. This company has zero history, gives no details on their manufacturing or shipping capabilities and has constantly backtracked on their initial promises since day 1. There is not a single thing they have shown that makes me think they are capable of delivering this product.

Hey man, I really appreciate the information you’ve been providing lately, but this video was far too long. You could have done this in twenty minutes. Please try to cut back on the exposition or release shorter summary videos when you have a review that takes longer than 15 minutes.

100% something I debated on. I could have shared less for sure. Between worrying about comments saying it was too short and not all encompassing and too long, I opted for the too long. Hard to nail down exactly how much info everyone once, and it's not a single answer I fear either. I do appreciate the feedback though and will continue to try and strike the right balance.

@@TheKingofAverage this is meant as constructive criticism. You know your audience better, I just feel like we are probably, on average, sharper than the typical RU-vid consumer and don’t need quite so much exposition to understand the points you are trying to convey.

Started watching...heard the comments about it being fairly exhaustive and I started to prepare myself...then you said fairly quick and I looked at the total playtime of 45 minutes...yeah our idea of fairly quick is off by about a half hour. Fairly quick for an exhaustive review should not be more than 15 minutes, otherwise you will have lost your audience with all the extraneous detail that just isn't needed.

need to add in a TDLR or mark to where you start your summary as I could only get into about 5 minutes of this before your information overload and non-essential info overdid your message.

It's always a toss up and sadly I cannot please everyone for sure. Go too quick and I leave out information others might want, or they feel I didn't take the time I should have with such a sensitive/important subject. Make it too long and the people wanting a more quick FYI are left out. Perhaps this one is indeed a bit long, but I opted to rather be too long than too short. Even then I didn't go over some other aspects like how their Vimeo account already shows off their next product (an exercise machine). A synopsis section though is a good idea for sure.

In a world where Biden is president of the US, this is the best idea. More people than ever need the "lowest cost possible while getting the job done" dollar stores and five and belows as well as DIs and other donation stores are more packed these days. Who has the money for "quality oak" or "Sterling silver legs".
