I turn on “Double-Tap to Drag” without drag lock in Accessibility > Pointer Control. It helps a ton with long drag operations on the trackpad, especially when using an external monitor. It lets you drag items without constantly physically pressing down on the trackpad, just sliding your finger. And it gives you a short grace period where you can lift and reposition your finger to move the cursor further like one would when not dragging. It’s a godsend on the tiny trackpad on the Magic Keyboard, but I find it takes just a little too long than I’d like to stop the drag behaviour. In a perfect world they’d bring Three-Finger Drag from the Mac, it’s such a productivity boost when working with trackpads it’s crazy to me it’s not on by default!
I was like yeah yeah, whatever, I know all of this - and then "show links on hover" came up and my jaw dropped 😮 I had no idea this was a thing on iPad
I wish I was one of the smart people and waited for the keynote. I just bought a 12.9 M2 chip iPad Pro 6th gen 5 weeks ago for $1,850 CAD and this new m4 is out now. I feel RIPPED out of my soul. I usually only use it for gaming as I’m a bartender and my tips bought this. HAAALLLP 😂😂😂
Compare: - if you don’t need Apple Pencil Pro AND you have the M2 pro already, DO NOT buy the m2 Air: I have your m2 pro, and except for a few specifications is almost same as this 2024. - BUT, if GAMING is your thing, i see that the m4 pro spec sheet has ray tracing which might be good if any game developers are going to do it.
I’ll have to go theough this list again. So many good like typing instead of speaking to Siri. Maybe i’ll use Siri now. Is there a shortcut to turn Siri off or on, or maybe in control center? After having Google Assistant join in a conversation, i was spooked about user either of the two busy bodies. 9:51 i turn off the iPad SHAKE TO ERASE, to scary to have on a default.
Fixed position volume control settings are back on the M4 iPad? M2 did not have this and forced you to use the “auto swap” feature when rotating… biggest pet peeve I have with it lol
Excellent video, Chris! Gave me some good ideas and/or reminders for things to set up today on my new M4 iPad Pro!! :) thanks for being such a great advocate for this device and those of us that love it so.
Thank you for sharing your settings. I’ve looked everywhere and can’t find it. Where is “Fixed position volume control”? You mention it around the 5 minute mark.
Thank you for the suggestions, especially around the resolution of the iPad. I never knew it could be changed, and I was furious that I can't code properly on it in Playground. Now that's fixed thanks to you :) Only thing is missing now is a fully capable XCode on the iPadOS. Edit: And probably iTerm. With Quake style console.
I mean, yes you can. But not if you are truly advanced computer user, for example software engineer or physicist. The fact that programming on the ipad is really inconvenient (although possible) or the fact that it does not have active cooling or the fact that its operating system is inferior to that of MacOS in almost every respect is what makes people say that
So I had that written down, but then when I went to change it on the M4 iPad it was already on fast. I didn’t restore from a back up so I am wondering if that is the new default. I need to check another device.
thanks a lot. I didn‘t know „Try to Siri“ existed. That‘s quite good. Yet, I only have the old magic keyboard and that doesn‘t have a microphone key and „press top button“ isn‘t convenient to use. Is that any way I could use a custom key? Or shortcut to activate „Type to Siri“?
To answer your question about what setting I value above all is... is the More Space option particular having the extra small font to allow more content to show.
I personally always, always disable backround refresh, because that does absolutely nothing other than eating up my battery life. It also reduces the performance on my ipad by about 15 percent which is absoluetly unnecessary especially given how little it actually does. If it does actually do something useful in certain apps though, please let me know!
Great video! I learned several things here. One minor clarification. Apologies if I misunderstood or if someone else has already mentioned it. The pointer control “scrolling speed” covered in the video only controls how pages scroll up and down, not how quickly the trackpad cursor moves as seemed to be implied. To update the trackpad speed, go to General -> Trackpad -> Trackpad Speed. Again, great video!
Hey, why do you prefer to have stage manager on? (If you don’t multitask Or only use two apps at once, would you still do it?). So many settings to change there. I used to use DND focus but now will do similar to yours regarding notifications We need a video for MacBook settings as well. Wondering if similar settings applies on your iofs.
We complain, but as far as improvement in the OS there are often so many new features or improvements that i don’t discover them until 2 OS updates later ❤😮😅
I wish I could find a way to make the homescreen more useful. But with the iPads being mainly designed for fullscreen apps, or multitasking. I find it tricky to really make the homescreen feel useful.
Chris- my iPad doesn’t have the option to turn off auto lock. The longest I have is 5 minutes. Is that something in the new iPads? I have an 11” M1. Am I just missing something?
When doing videos like this please incorporate timestamps. Given there are a million videos like this or there a way to quickly determine unique points/tips is appreciated.
I believe they are on the Mac. It’s been a while since i’ve used a Mac, but on the iPad you drag the new task button to the left side of the list column
which font do you use on obsidian? I started using the app by your productivity video and I love it, btw I’m waiting for that video, and want to know which theme are you using
I would recommend reducing text size if you have no problem reading. On a recent iPad Air or Pro, you can have automations set up that alternate between 2 different UI text sizes when you connect or disconnect from an external monitor. Very handy for getting even more content on the monitor!
@@ChrisLawley Is there any way to get a Rectangle app like window management to quickly position windows to the left right or full screen with keyboard??
Suggestion about Dark Mode: Since the new display is OLED, the pixel are actually *off* when fed "black" signal - thus, should theoretically use less power. Would be interesting to do a battery test of using w/ (1) DarkMode + Black wallpaper, vs (2) BrightMode + 'white' wallpaper. (using screen at highest brightness will highlight any differences the most). Insights here could be a great for the iPad community!
