iPhone 11 Pro & DJI Osmo Mobile 3 have got a serious problem!
When using the DJI Mimo App and the iPhone 11 Pro mounted on the DJI Osmo Mobile 3, the footage is incredibly jittery.
But the jitters only seem to happen in the DJI Mimo app, and on specific lens. I've tried out Filmic Pro and the stock Apple app with interesting results compared to the DJI Mimo app. Regardless, DJI need to fix this as the DJI Osmo Mobile 3 is absolutely incredible when paired with the iPhone 11 Pro.

Hey Vic, great video I see that you use the ultra wide lens, do you have to do some sort of adjustment to not have the motor showing in the shot? Or does it not show? Or do you have to use a "flashlight" mode to compensate? Thanks!

Hey there. On the ultra wide, I just pushed the iPhone to the left a bit and while it unbalanced the gimbal and made the motors work harder, that’s what I did. Not a great solution long term though

When you filmed with the Filmicpro app did you turn on or off the stabilisation inside the app? I'm using IphoneX with DJI Osmo Mobile 2 24fps 1/48 4K. Your footage looks much better using filmic pro than those I've seen online using Filmic pro? Is it my set up? Thanks

Vic Barry I couldn’t do it mate. I tried the Osmo 3 for a month and sent it back. It just costs too much to have a complication that critical with my phone. I’m going to give the Osmo Action a try. Looking forward to your video though!

It’s to do with the telephoto lens and the tracking in the mino app. It’s all over the place and not tracking properly

Used my DJI Osmo 3 for the first time and got the same problem. Used it with an Iphone Xs. It only happens with Mimo. No problems with the iphone camera app

Hey Raphael, thanks for the comment. It's insane to think this hasn't been fixed yet. It's one of the reasons I've been a little bit reluctant to take out the Osmo Mobile to be honest. As their app is superb for tracking, but unfortunately the "jitters" are an issue. What kinda stuff are you shooting with your iPhone, and jitters aside in Mimo how are you liking the Osmo?

@@VicBarry I am a CrossFit coach and since our Crossfit Box is closed due to Corona I make short instruction video's for our members. And the tracking function is really good! The DJI OM3 is my first gimbel. Never used one before, so I'll have to get use to it. And I have to say, I like really like it!

hey hey! I hope all is well with you! I got an iphone 11 pro max with an Otterbox and I want a gimbal...I thought the Osmo 3 would be the one but the max payload is 230 grams...and the iphone 11pro max without a case is already 226 grams..already at the top...my iphone 11promax with the otterbox is 285 grams! Heavy for sure... so what gimbal do I need? I want smooth motion for sure...thanks

Hey Erick,’thanks for the commenting. I’ve seen the max work on the Osmo mobile 3. Searching around online will give you different results. Take a look at some of the stuff by Moza or Zhiyun as they’ll have a heavier payload. Regardless you’re going to have some issues with the ultra wide lens being too wide and will possibly pull in part of the gimbal in shot.

You will need to shut off Apple’s image stabilization on the settings. When both the iPhone and the mimo app are turned on it cancels both off. You have to chose one and shut off the other. Hope this helps.

Hey Jonathan, thanks for that but I’m afraid you can’t turn off stablization in the iPhone 11 Pro. This is a problem with the Mimo app that DJI has not fixed

It's the digital stabilisation that fights eachother since the osmo is designed to stabilise your video its kind of in the right so the option to disable it should be on apple. However you should be happy that they treat apple so well compared to android users. I have an 8k camera but can't even record 4k 60 because their app is dogshit, also can't use and of my optical zoom lenses I only have the option for normal or ultra wide

Can't you turn off image stabilisation on the 11 pro? The reason it works in Filmic Pro is because the app allows you to turn off the image stabilisation.

Hey there, you can't turn off the stabilization on the iPhone 11 Pro. The only lens that's not stabilized fully is the ultra wide. But as explained in the video, it's the Mimo app is the problem. The Osmo Mobile 3 works perfectly on Filmic Pro on all lenses as it does on the stock apple app.

Hey Estefan, I'm not 100% sure to be honest. I have an Otterbox Symmetry case, and while the Osmo Mobile 3 works with it, it's a little bit on the snug fit side. And I believe the battery case is a slightly bigger at the back than a case like this, so I'd say it won't fit, or if it does, it'll most definitely be too heavy.

FYI, I have the Zhiyun Smooth Q2 with the iPhone 11 Pro Max and it's ROCK SOLID with all lenses. I thought I would buy the DJI for it's software but, after this great review... I see it's not feasible for me. I was so let down by your footage that I just took my little rig out and retested it. I even ran with it and have virtually none of the "jitters" that you referred to. I hope that Zhiyun can hook it up with Filmic Pro but, it's not essential for me as the 11 Pro is so awesome right "out of the box".

The reports aren't the same across reviews. Maybe isolated to this hardware. I am researching a gimbal for the 11pro and right now the Osmo 3 is leading the pack out of all the reviews that I saw. Mostly due to the wide angle lense working correctly with the osmo 3 by not showing it in the frame. With the Q2 you have to only use it in flashlight mode or the gimbal shows itself in the frame. Also the software tracking is poor on the Q2. Targeting is superior with DJI software and software edge is a major portion of the gimbal needed strength. This video further has me curious so I will see if this is more isolated due to operator / maybe glitchy hardware sensor...

superdacoolman take a read through the comments and you’ll see other people experiencing it. DJI support have acknowledged it after being sent the video too. As for the wide angle lens it’s most definitely too wide for the Osmo Mobile 3 as it does show the motor. How ever you can push it to one side and get it out of shot. It’ll drive the motors a bit too hard but...

The max will work the Osmo mobile 3 but at 4k 60 you will have problems that I’ve outlined. At this stage, I’d expect another bunch of new phone gimbals (moza have a new one on the way) over the next few months. So if you can hold out....

Hey there. There is no setting for it. It’s all in the magnetic lens that up attach. It automatically gives a wider field of View

Vic Barry it’s Aggravating not to be able to use the iPhones camera full potential with in the app , but I think the Mimo app is much better than the other gimbal apps I have used. Zhiyun app isn’t very good, the Feiyu tech app is so so, .. the Mimo app is almost there, few things I think could be improved upon, the main thing is 60fps shaking.

I can still feel the bouncing effect as you walk. If this is the performance of the gimbal then its unacceptable. The purpose of a gimbal is to smoothen that out.

superdacoolman I’ve seen it come up and read about it in forums. Apparently DJI don’t have access to all the bells and whistles from the camera so that may be a problem. Don’t know how true that is

It's a 3 axis gimbal not a 4. It happens with all smartphone gimbals which is why we learn to do the "Ninja walk"

This is nothing to do with ninja walks, which have to be done with any gimbal regardless is how many axis it has. In any case, this happens at 4k60 only and is a tiny micro vibration

Hey Mike, yeah. To be honest, this is a combination of an Apple AND DJI problem, although from what I read it's mainly Apple not releasing a complete SDK for the camera, so DJI are struggling to fix this..hence it hasn't been fixed.

Vic! Please help! I am about to receive my i-phone 11 Pro tomorrow and have to leave for a trip to S. America next week. Hey Rich, it's the Mimo app is the issue and it's problems with communicating properly with the camera, hence the jitters. From what I've seen recently, an update seems to have helped smooth things out. But once the Osmo Mobile 3 is on, and the phone is balanced, you don't have to use the app. The phone is stablized on the physical gimbal itself and not the software, so even using the stock apple app with the osmo mobile 3 will give some incredible results. Also when you are using the Ultra Wide lense it's capturing a part of the Osmo in the lower right corner!! What do you suggest we do??

On the normal sized iPhone 11 Pro, push the phone slightly to the opposite side - It makes the gimbal motors work slightly harder, but it's what I've been doing without issue.

What gimbal would you recommend for pro max 11 if I decide to use moment lenses??

Hey Marco, not the Osmo Mobile 3 anyway. The Max is a few grams off the load capacity for the OM3 so adding a case and lens won't be good for the motors and it won't balance correctly. Something like the Zhiyun Crane 2 ( amzn.to/2XDjy1X ) will most definitely work, and it's not much bigger than the Osmo Mobile 3 (plus it comes with a phone holder too)

The Apple stock camera app works perfectly fine as does Filmic Pro. You won’t have the tracking options that you do in the Mimo app but other than that they’re good to go.
