The iPhone 12 Pro Max is the latest flagship phone from Apple that is a major upgrade to their constantly maturing smartphone lineup. From a photography standpoint this stands to be one of the most advanced camera systems in any smartphone ever made… well it will be in the next few months with the release of Apple ProRaw in iOS 14.3
This review is specifically about the Max version of the iPhone 12 Pro. There are a few physical differences between this and the smaller Pro version. You get a 2.5x telephoto lens (2.0 in the iPhone 12 Pro), the Max uses a larger sensor in the main camera (along with a 7 element lens) for better performance, and because the phone is physically larger you also get sensor stabilization which will give you slighly better performance in low light than the optical stabilization used in the smaller Pro.
The hardware upgrades are nice, but the stars of the show are Apple ProRaw for still images and Dolby Vision for video.

This is the first proper review of 12 Pro Max that I’ve seen. Thank you for explaning the camera functions to us. I have seen so many videos just listing those specs all over again and this was very usefull info, since I just bought one, and I was curious to know what those premium features would be in use.

See, this review is what pushes me over the edge with getting a Pro Max. All other so called phone photography reviewers are all harping on how the Pro Max doesn't shoot better pictures than the regular iphone. Clearly they haven't read the finer details as you have. Hey Ted, just an FYI. ProRaw is already available with the 14.3 public beta. I’ve taken some test images, including bringing the DNG files into LR, and it looks very promising. What’s surprising is the saved raw file starts with the iPhone optimized image, so we get the best of both worlds.

It just looks normal when you drag it in there. I tried it earlier today. You can technically set it up so the highlights are blown out but then you just go to effects on the side and put, 'HDR tools,' on the clip and then select convert to Rec. 709. However, you don't even have to do that. Even in SDR it looks better than if you turn it off and don't use it. You can tell a big difference in the dynamic range.

In many situations, a camera is simply irreplaceable. However, the cell phone is, for me, a powerful tool to build photographic narratives. Unfortunately, for us Brazilians, devices like the iPhone 12 Pro Max are absurdly expensive here. As expensive as full frame DSLR cameras. Fortunately, there are much more affordable devices that have reasonable cameras. This is the case of the device that I have and that I use in a project, in which I record situations that occur on the streets. I use an LG K51S and I am satisfied with it. This channel is sensational. Congratulations on the work!

This is super helpful! Thank you for the information. I’ve notice the video quality on this new phone to be much more vibrant. But when I use apps to edit video, the quality takes a nose dive. Any suggestions for a good (free) video editor app that preserves the quality?

Like you I ordered my 12pro max two weeks ago and picked it up last weekend. I had an iPhone 6S plus. I chose the 512gb model and the same color as yours. I waited for the 5G phone because of its speed. I am also a photographer so the camera portion was a plus. You are such a good teacher, I always enjoy watching your videos when they apply to something I am interested in. I am looking forward to further reviews of this phone.

First, thank you for the videos you produce and in particular this one. I just received my 12 pro max last week and have taken some shots with the camera and the results for me have Been mixed. The phones sensor, irrespective of having smart or regular HDR on saturates the scenes to much. Additionally I'm having some issues with heightened color banding on the skies of landscape of City scene photos that were never a major issue on my iPhone X. Have you found this an issue with yours and how do you fix that?

During the summer I finally got a new phone in the iPhone SE2. My previous phone was a very old iPhone 4s and I’ve been blown away by how good cameras have gotten in phones. In good light the images are arguably as good, iq wise, from my D90 I still use from 2009 or so. I’ll probably wait a few more years for another upgrade, but it’s amazing how fast camera tech is advancing.

I am very glad that I found your channel, finally I can hear real and solid opinions, I am a wedding videographer, I have been 40 years in the business, sometimes I have used iPhones for extra far angles in events, I have always had good results, now I will buy the iPhone 12 Pro Max, but you know, before, I have see tons of reviews, most of them putting trash on the phone, just because it is 100 dollars more than the Pro and because they don't see a dramatic difference in quality,, I know that there is not a huge difference in quality but I could see in their reviews something that they could not see, that there is a little more clarity and less noise with the Pro Max, they don't perform even simple tests like yours, they move the camera like crazy, I understand, they are not videographers, but with you, I could see that I was not wrong, I enjoyed very much your point of view and I agree with you, about Dolby Vision I also agree, It is the most amazing thing that has happened to smartphones, the quality is amazing!, I can't wait to have my 12 Pro Max and start using it in weddings and in family trips!, you have a new subscriber!

Great review!! I have an iPhone X now and I’m planning to upgrade to either the iPhone 13 PM or the Samsung galaxy 21 ultra. I’m used to iPhones and have a lot of apps on it that may not be compatible with Samsung. But I love the periscope telephoto that Samsung has but love other features of iPhone so I’m not sure which I’ll get. I use my phone mostly for photography. I don’t often do video recording but the Dolby thing sounds great and if I had that, I would take more videos. Between the Samsung 21 ultra and iPhone 12 PM, which one do you prefer as a day to day camera? Thanks so much!!

I love the iPhone 12 Pro Max. The flat edges feel amazing in the hands. The screen is gorgeous and of course the iOS software is smooth as butter. My camera will never disappoint me with the quality pictures/ videos that are taken. I also really like that it feels a little heavier, & the gold color option looks amazing especially with my slim black case with the front gold trim slighting glistening 😍 Oh and I can’t forget about the indestructible ceramic screen! 💪

i have read that 12 PM has a problem znog minimal focus distance compared to normal 12 due to larger sensor. Have you noticed such a problem?

I’m running iOS 14.3 Beta on my iPhone 12Pro Max and ProRAW seems to work great. I have not taken any “real” photos, but Lightroom Mobile on my iPad supports it already. It does take much longer to import into iPad (2020 iPad Pro 11” also running iPadOS 14.3 beta) versus the standard iPhone photos, though.

I got the 12 Pro an upgrade from the 8 Plus and my main interest was in LiDAR technology which helps in low light photography. I haven’t tried it much because of the winter and the series of lockdowns which reduced my options. The 8 Plus is the same size as the Max and I wanted something a little smaller and I thought I won’t notice the subtle differences in the camera between the 12 Pro and the 12 Pro Max.

Proraw as of now is only available on the regular wide camera. The tele seems to not support it or at least not on the current beta.

Did you find heaps of issues shooting at night? My iPhone 11 Pro can’t handle street lights very well it just causes flares regardless of how clean the lens is. I didn’t have this issue with the Samsung galaxy s10, I’d like to be able to shoot at night especially considering there’s a dedicated night mode but it might as well be useless. Day time it takes nice enough images to share around.

Yes, I'd like to hear your thoughts too on how this compares with the Xperia 1ii as a photography tool. To me the Xperia is a more traditional photography experience and with careful exposure and a few shadow adjustments in post great results can be had. Computational photography is great but HDR can go too far sometimes
