Unfair comparison..Iphones aren't even the best camera phone and you are comparing them with alpha 1?? Also, what you don't see is that there is a huge detail difference between the two..No pro is gonna use a smartphone you know..the difference in reality is huge..I bet not a single photo that the alpha 1 takes is not far better than a smartphone..Also, you can't just comment on colour science either..For normal people, smartphones are great..but not for pros.. Don't know why this bullshit is going on in YT.. Also, the sensor is not way better than Samsung's and also, the Samsung S23 Ultra is gonna come this January so wait for that isheep!

@@gtwester F2.8 lenses is where they start to put good glass, even F4 on zooms. I use a 35 2.8 lens and the images are miles away from the iphone, i have an Xs though. I sometimes post series of photos on instagram and i want to beat myself for not using my camera more often.

I hate to say this, but iPhone HDR in photos are so aggressive nowadays they resemble how Samsung did HDR several years back. The output is just so tone-mapped with lows brought up so much and highlights brought down, making the image lean towards being flat.

iPhone’s HDR in images isn’t as aggressive when you compare it to the Mi 12 Ultra or the S22 Ultra. They go so far that they look even flatter

As someone that has both a sony camera and the iphone 13 pro I almost always prefer the sony A1 in this video. The iphone’s details are over sharpened to a point where it’s losing colors and saturation, and also it makes all kinds of details appear in the same ‘level’ (as in some details should be more visible to the eye than others but the iphone make it all the same)

yes exactly, I can't deny the fact that computational photography works magic for handheld low light photos, but realistically speaking you simply cannot treat a professional camera as a point and shoot and expect amazing photos all the time, the advantage of mirrorless or DSLRs is in their versatility, you're shooting something far away get a telephoto lens, you're shooting in low light get a fast lens, you like how phone photos look set highlights to -100, shadows to +100, and crank the sharpness to the max. A big mistake I believe Max made for lowlight photos with the Sony is not shooting at the right exposure and cranking up the shadows which kills the quality of an image. Given the proper technique/lens, I am positive that a 10 year old DSLR would still beat the latest and greatest from any phone manufacturer.

@@Mehwhatevr One of the greatest advantages of a professional camera system is the lens selection it offers. Yet in the comparison he mostly uses plain 24mm when there are lenses ranging from super ultrawide to extreme telephoto which provide unique perspectives that simply cannot be done on the iphone. In comparisons involving zooms, he also simply crops massively into the a1 instead of using lenses with longer focal lengths, effectively making it a tiny cropped sensor comparable to that on the iphone but without the computational photography. He also for some reason refuses to open up the aperture to f/4+ in most of the photos, where the depth of field would be incredibly apparent. Instead he sticks to f11~ which greatly limits the light capturing ability of the camera in order to make it "comparable" to the iphone's physically much smaller sensor and aperture. This comparison is limiting and restraining the mirrorless on all fronts and this could very easily confuse viewers into thinking iphone camera has equal if not better image quality, when that is clearly not the case in 2022, at least not right now.

@@Variable_Degree_Series it is true that the night shots of the google pixel do look awesome because of the AI and max 10 mins exposure time. But I have to disagree that its strictly better because it all comes down to preference, the pixel makes lights look extremely realistic whereas the iphone brings out the vibrance of the colours and lights in the night, so the pics are entirely subjective. Plus, you can also edit the pics after, thus making the difference negligible. From an objective perspective, the iphone cameras are... 100% Good Enough!

Atleast it doesn't over highlight the shadows due to which the photos looks flat..(iphones) and not to mention the warm auto white balance..sometimes it's just too warm..yes you can edit the pics..but if you take many pics, how long do you plan to edit..the flat shadows on iphones are really bad..I mean in some photos it just too much and the zoom is poor..S22 ultra is exceptional however even pixel is great..but yeah iphones are 100% fine in terms of camera..and so are all the flagships..for that price, it is very much expected.. however iphones are by far not the best for photos..videos are exceptional only on iphone and Samsung S series..but pixels are good too.. Considering Pixel 7 pro will cost $650 after one or two months (even on the launch, if you exclude the price of pixel watch provided free with Pixel 7 pro, The pixel 7 pro costs only $550, it's very worth the price..) Samsung and apple cost more and so they have better video performance..but for photos, pixel is great..the details are unmatched..the computational photography is amazing and the magic eraser works like a charm..(Samsung also has a good magic eraser and a photo remaster as well).

The reason why the A1 couldn’t focus is because you didn’t use the slower focus mode, in that mode the A1 can focus in literally no light and I’ve tried it. Also who uses a zoom in low light. I would usually use the 20mm 1.8 or the 50mm 1.2 which can gather over 4 times more light than the f2.8.

You are right. After I watched this video, I realized that these people do not know how to use a mirrorless camera, especially in poor lighting conditions. But even after that, I saw a difference in favor of SONY in 90% of the photos. Colors and details are sooo much better on Sony. Optics and sensor size matters.

The right camera has better blurred background, but the left one did a great job making main object super interesting and I didn't even notice the artifacts until they were pointed out. So left one for sure. If I looked at it on Instragram, the center of the frame would be the only point I look at.

The sensor is still way smaller than the pro camera, but it’s really not tiny anymore. The iPhone 13 Pro actually got a pretty large sensor and the 14 Pro is actually 65% larger than the 13 Pro, going from 1/1.65” to 1/1.28”. 1-inch iPhone sensors aren’t far away.

Great review and in most respects not surprising . I have done similar tests with my Sony A7R3 and iPhone and in many respects the iPhone takes very similar or even "better" photos (highlight and shadow retention of detail, and skies not blown out!) than the Sony A7R3. And when you add in size, weight, (carrying different lenses and batteries, flashgun,) convenience etc and even safety while away on holiday, I will almost always only take the iPhone now and I have just upgraded to the iPhone 14 Prom Max from the 12PM. I certainly don't want to spend time doing PP tweaks after a holiday bringing out details etc. I simply don't have the time !Why don't cameras have inbuilt computational software IF you want to use it?

we can't deny there's a ton of oversharpening with the iphone. I love the 48mpxl sensor but it would've been great for the 12 to be upgraded to 24. So often when not shooting in raw, the 12mpxl looks good.. but punching in at all and you're reminded that this is a digital camera with just 12 megapixels.

I really enjoyed these blind test comparisons, the only thing is a laptop screen at even full screen per picture is way to small to come to a proper judgement let alone split screen, you should do these with at least a 30 inc monitor and above to get a better understanding of sharpness and over sharpness and fine detail, all of those things are very compressed on a small laptop. I’ve got Sony 30/38, iPhone 8/38, and I’m not even a snob for photography or whatever. I don’t really like the over sharpened look. Might be ok on a phone screen, but “sharpness” doesn’t mean details. Also, something like Sony a7m4 for 1/3 price would do much better in those lowlight scenarios, because A1 isn’t a lowlight camera by any means. Would be cool though if modern cameras could quickly stack photos like iPhones do.

It’s actually pretty impressive that iPhone can even come anywhere close to the professional camera, although it obviously falls short in most of the areas like: oversharpened image, being slightly too aggressive with HDR imo, crappy fake blur especially on thin details like hair or grass strands, mediocre lens coating that flares, generally bad low light (besides that one portrait photo). It’s definitely a decent camera to always have with you, but it’s no replacement for a real camera, and it doesn’t even need to be a $9K one.

Its caused by diffraction of light passing through the sapphire crystal lenses. Trying to correct it would require majorly updating their image processing software or using a cheaper lens like Samsung. Apple makes world class hardware, but it sucks at making world class software.

That's why on an iphone, or any phone for that matter, if you turn off in camera sharpening you'll notice how nothing is really sharp even though it's technically 'in focus.' Apple does have a 'sapphire' cover over the cameras but that's not really the lens.

For average user, iPhone is probably a better choice. I can take way nicer (to my taste) portraits with my Fuji X-E3 (not even a pro camera) and F1.2 lens every time I use manual settings, even without RAW post processing as JPEGS from Fujis are great. If I add to it RAW photo + post processing (usually only Lightroom) I can print it in a large format and be very happy with it. I can also take amazing street or landscape photos, but then I need extra lenses with me. They're far superior, but very inconvenient, especially if I compare it with a smartphone. iPhone doesn't come even close if you print anything bigger than 10cm x 15cm. But if you just print small, post photos on the internet, or share with friends, well - there's hardly a better tool at the moment. During my last holidays I was barely using my Fuji. Carrying only an iPhone made me enjoy my time better, and I still took great photos. And that was only iPhone 13 Mini. Now with iPhone 14 Pro it's another step up. I was already considering selling my photography gear, and I totally understand people who simply choose a smartphone over the purposely built camera. What you get for your money now is amazing. So it all depends what you want, how much do you want to pay for it and how much time do you want to spend doing it. For now I keep both just in case...

A lot of these are not because of the actual camera being less sharp but instead the A1 focusing on a different point and because the DoF is so shallow it appears that the image is less sharp as only parts of the image is extremely sharp

I love what you did here. It's a testament to how advanced our phones are these days. You can argue the point that the pro camera can do this or that all day long, but that's really an academic argument. If people are seeing the images and picking iPhone pictures as being better, that's all that matters. I have a prosumer Canon and a Nikon and the pictures I shoot are only fractionally better than what these little phones are doing except in very specific situations. Thanks for doing the great stuff you do!

Watching on my 4k monitor, I got 28 for A1, 7 for iPhone, and 3 I didn't mind either. The iPhone is very impressive for a tiny camera lens, but I still find so many of the images over sharpened to the extent that they look too fake, my eye's just don't see the real world with such crispiness! I wonder if this is down to post processing, or still baked in to the Apple RAW files. I'm also not convinced by the HDR, yes more of the scene range is visible but again it doesn't look natural, in the real world we'd squint when looking at a dark foreground with a bright back light, which naturally blows out the highlights. To be fair the iPhone HDR does look better on a high dynamic range screen such as the iPhone itself, so may that more an issue of trying to compress the dynamic range for viewing on a non HDR screen.

Even though the Sony was better in most cases, the iPhone performed incredibly well. At 17:38 a better photo could have been taken on the Sony by using a slower shutter speed with a tripod.

in a way its a weird compare its complex buildin editor vs slightly edited images. comments like didn't want to use a brush on this that now is single action in lr. also most 14pro are oversharp thats seen as detail. what we can say is iphones and phones in general use a amazing amount of tricks during and after taking the images that has to be matched by long exposures, multiple exposures and a little more editing thats all auto-done on a phone. but this gains you more flexibility

Some people want me to do none, some want me to use brushes and mask the sky separately, etc. I could even take multiple raw shots on the A1 and combine them first but of course all of that takes way more time and we are comparing to an iPhone which does it automatically. I tried to find a balanced medium between what people ask, and still be able to compare a wide variety of photos where many RU-vidrs who do similar content have barely and photos since it takes a lot of time to do something like this compared to a regular youtube video they would make.

@@MaxTechOfficial i understand fully and its a good thing that the iphones build in set of tricks and editor are ao tuned that it gives amazing results at the click of a button. but programs like lightroom also evolve the different push and pulls are now also easy done with buttons like select sky or subject in lightroom no need to open photoshop. in many ways we need better 'give me 10 processing options' in programs like lightroom to compete the quick edit and sony needs to build in way more into the 'raw' files including long handheld exposures or multiple focus shots for marco. The whole concept of 'raw' is weird anyway most camera fiddle with the raws so just get over it and store all the bits you want in a 'fat' file for the editing program. thats what is the issue here 'stupid' capturing and 'way to much work editing tools' vs a well integrated plan of capturing all the data needed and complex and amazing at times auto editing.

Love the channel and videos but on this one, I believe we need to be careful with drawing a proper conclusion. These kind of tests often seem to suggest that smartphone cameras can fully replace regular cameras. But I (still) see them as rather complementary. Leaving aside zoom capabilities, it might be true that in 90% of all cases smartphone cameras might perform as well as (or even outperform) regular cameras. But the reality for me (as having the privilege of owning both devices) is that I have my Sony for the 10% tail cases where I am on a photowalk and want to take a photo in very challenging (light) conditions, also with a view to do some comprehensive post-shot editing in lightroom. It is clear that my iPhone is sufficient (or even superior when also considering its weight compared to a regular camera) to take a nice spontaneous point and shoot landscape picture when being on the way to work. At the same time, I would certainly not even consider choosing the iPhone over a full frame camera for taking Wild Life shots or photos of the milky way. Maybe we should all take a rest and stop trying to find the ‚one and only‘ camera and instead realize that (for the moment) both categories of cameras have their right to exist in a way that people then can choose the one that best fits their needs (acknowledging that for many people the smartphone might be the more obvious candidate in most situations).

Love the video. Why doesn’t Apple make a mirrorless camera that could combine the pros of having big sensors and glass and all of their experience with computational photography? Could such a thing be done and would anyone buy it?

@@Mikaisafk Mostly pro photographers would buy the iCamera anyway. Everyone else would still buy an iPhone every year like they do now. I personally would buy the iCamera, and have the new iPhone on me at all times. If I could replace my pro camera with a camera that does amazing computational photography on top of having a large sensor, that's just a win win. That's just me though, but I think others pros would feel the same. Another thought: Sony makes the sensors for iPhones, why can't Apple make the chipsets for Sony cameras?

I don’t think the products would have to be mutually exclusive. Instead, Apple could do what they do best and leverage an ecosystem where your iPhone and your iCamera work together. For instance, you could use your iPhone as a remote display for your iCamera, or as a remote flash, or send photos and videos to be edited on an iPad. Just some thoughts, but this is something I really wish Apple would do if they did this would they make it compatible with an existing brand for lenses? Or would they create their own brand or line of lenses?

I would love for an Apple Mirrorless camera that is medium format (beyond full frame), shoots 45 megapixel stills, can record 8K 60FPS 12bit ProRes Raw, has a dual base ISO of 640 and 20,000, has an LPL mount and I would like Apple to commission Leica/Leitz to make some prime lenses and a few zooms.

The Raw edits from the A1 are very bad, the A1 has a lot of dynamic range. Also most of the Pictures with the a1 were not exposed correctly

Pesonal opinion, with camera, you have way more lens choices and I be way more creative with A1 than with my iphone. That being said, if you don't know what you are shooting/will be shooting, you can let the ai sensor calculate for you. But if you want to have more control/have some ideas in mind, definitely a pro camera. For me, if I don't know what to shoot, I'll just bring my ricoh gr3 instead using an iphone because I simply want to easily & quick access to exposure, focus distance iso etc.

"Better" is getting highly subjective here. As a pro photographer/cinematographer, I have to say, sharpness isn't the primary measure of a good photo. Also, I understand you weren't going for the best photos you could take, but the sony will certainly have both a better best and a worse worst example. If you had used "better" lenses, a tripod, etc, then the sony would have done much better for some of these. That being said....I have to say...we have arrived. Computational photography (not video...yet) is in the same weight class as pro cameras in *some* situations. You have made an amazing case for the iPhone and I myself use a 13 pro for 95% of my personal/family photo and video. Keep it up.

I literally only preferred the iPhone twice, I just don’t think ProRAW looks realistic or is worth using over RAW, the over-processing and oversharpening and baked in overdone dynamic range all make it look just like a crappy JPEG… but with some extra editing tools.

People often confuse sharpness and contrast with detail. Here you hear „*definitely* more detail on the iPhone“ a lot, but when you take a closer look there’s finer detail on the A1 pictures. They are more natural and „organic“ looking as well. The iPhones photos are simply more in your face with their sharpening - and I say all of this as an iPhone user. Also, portrait mode almost always smudges fine detail on the outline of subjects such as hair. Nowhere close to the organic sharpness rolloff of a native wide aperture lens. It’s better than it was on older iPhones, but it’s directly visible and distracting. But well, it does not matter anyway as we all watch photos on really tiny screens 😅

At 5:55 the iPhone reveals itself through the reflection of the protective glass. This is not fine. But all together is the the iPhone a great substitute for a professional Camera.

I know it's hard to figure out what's a "good comparison", but I can say that parts of this one were really bad. Massively cropping in vs using a telephoto lens, using insanely high ISOs vs long exposures, and not doing any HDR with the camera is pretty crazy to me if you are going to do all of that with the iPhone. I don't know about the modern phones, but they have some sort of light, so I'd also say not putting a flash on the camera is misleading if the iPhone is firing a light / flash in the night shots.

I feel like the Sony wasn’t working correctly. Mainly with the autofocus. Maybe the camera needs to go through a micro adjust for the lens to compensate. It shouldn’t be performing so poorly. On that note, the iPhone looks to be over sharpening a lot, but it’s effective.

In all ways for every instance I was 50/50 and would likely be able to edit either to look a lot like the other. So, bottom line, no point in have the Sony other than for gathering a lot of tele-detail where the Sony would have worked. However, I have a Sony A7RIV and would be fine with that as opposed to purchasing the A1. Actually the A7IV would also be fine. So I would get the iPhone 14 Pro and save $8000.

I mean reviewers can say whatever they want, but people looking for the best image from their camera are still using mirrorless and DSLR for that reason. For casual use, iPhone and most flagship cameras produces very good quality image no doubt. But there's a lot of processing going on and the result may not suit everyone's need. The lack of zoom range and quality is also a reason people continue to use dedicated cameras. The JPEG right out of cameras may not match one produced by the iPhone, but processing the raw to your preference is much better.
