Before anyone gets mad at me, no, I'm not suggesting with this video that an iPhone is a worthy replacement for professional camera gear for real estate photography. In this video, we conduct a little experiment to see what kind of quality I can pull from the iPhone camera in a real estate setting and how that result compares to the Sony A7IV.

I've definitely snuck in an iPhone photo when an agent has given me an "oh by the way" after the camera is packed away. For MLS, it's definitely passable.

Thanks for the video. Honestly as a home buyer and realtor perspective I wouldn't even notice the differences or quality of photos. I understand as a photographer there are differences in quality. Most home buyers are looking at homes through apps on their phone anyways so they might not notice the differences at all. Great video again. What height were you using to take photos with the iphone?

I was 2 for 3. The giveaway was the wider few. I have considered using my phone in some areas of Philadelphia where I am concerned about safety and have my set up with me. I would only consider using my phone though if I know the agent/ homeowner would not be attending the shoot. Great video!

Nice test Mike. I did a similar test when I first got my iPhone 13 Pro Max, and yeah.. it's super easy to tell the difference still. The "fake" texture/sharpness, heavy noise reduction etc are all dead giveaways, but it's insane how far phone cameras have come. I never tried comparing exterior photos myself, but I definitely wonder if the quality gap is smaller in good light.
@InsideRealEstatePhotography
Yeah, it would probably be less obvious in good light/daylight

Although I did get all 3 correct. The quality of the iPhone is exceptional. The main giveaway is the over-sharpening of the iPhone. It does also slightly simplify the gradients. The noise is something that is more apparent when zooming in. I think the differences become more pronounced in low light. I have the Samsung S23 Ultra, which is pretty amazing, particularly as it has the option to reduce the sharpening. Would I sell my A7IV and replace it with the S23 or iPhone 15? no, but smartphones have definitely become legitimate tools in their own right. Given the leaps smartphones are making with such a tiny form, I look forward to pro cameras becoming smaller in the future or becoming a hybrid of the two technologies.

My man, tell us what iPhone you are using in the intro, this tech changes so much on the yearly refresh it matters. Use a leveling app or a third party photo app for the iPhone to make your life easier and please uses a less jankily out stock cut iPhone for your overlay.
@MichaelCook1981
@MichaelCook1981 Год назад
Pretty good, the biggest giveaway was the angle on the iPhone photos. The first one looked a lot higher above the granite countertop. Personally I think it’s good enough for an agent that’s starting out and can’t afford a professional photographer. I shot my first listing on my Samsung Note 10 or whatever it was at the time. Granted having a background in professional photography certainly helped.

A fun comparison…but you should have used an 18mm Moment lens on the better sensor lens & use an app like CameraPixels to better bracket…then run it thru Topaz DeNoise…would make a tougher comparison…I shoot with a Canon, but have my 13PM attached to the cage, to help with color…

Thanks Mike. I appreciate your video. Im upgrading my phone from a samsung s10+ to an iphone 14 pro max. Pick it up tomorrow. Comparing pics is one thing and this result didn't surprise. However, do a real estate video comparison between an iphone and a sony A7 iv and the phone will win...hands down.

The only reason a new flagship phone is not a genuine replacement for a professional camera for real-estate photography is that I can't probably sync it with my flashes and that it looks unprofessional. If I could overcome both of these issues, I am 1000% sure I could be the same busy photographer I am today. I know this because I test shoot every property I'm booked to photograph with my phone first. That way I can discuss the angles with the vendor and agent decide on a shot list before I get started. On several occasions over the last couple of years there has been times when for some reason or other I couldnt deliver the shot from my A7r4 and I have instead been able to, no problem edit and deliver the test shot from my phone and the client have still been really happy with the results with our knowing the wiser 😅😊

Oh this was fun! Without looking closely, it's really surprising how decent the iPhone images were. After your processing, the only one I knew for a fact was the 2nd set because I figured you'd used a CPL filter (floor reflections) on the mirrorless camera image. Totally unrelated question: did you get rid of the A7Siii for your work?

Nope! No way haha. A7siii is my all time favorite camera at the moment. I currently have a7siii, a7IV and a7iii

I think the givaway about the iPhone in photo #1 is the noise and lack of detail in the shadows. #2, it's the odd halo in the light sockets, and for some reason it seems desaturated. For #3 it's the overall distortion of the image... maybe an issue with straightening the lines in post?
@InsideRealEstatePhotography
All definitely valid observations!

I’m totally amazed at the results. I shoot RE and know some realtors who go in with their phones and post those photos online. Sometimes they look ok but most times they’re crooked, incorrectly exposed, and usually always show blown out windows. I’ve seen million dollar plus homes shown like this, which I think indicates a lack of professionalism the realtor possesses and a lack of respect the realtor has for the homeowner. Having said that, it looks like smart phones are very close to being able to replace many photographers, especially when you consider how small an image is displayed on MLS sites. ~ Just my thoughts. Ok, this is an excellent video.
@InsideRealEstatePhotography
You can get a good image with the phone but you still need to know what you’re doing. Walking around snapping photos with the phone in your hand like an agent would do is not going to produce these kind of results.

LOL I got them right on all tests, but that is cause I use the iPad extensively for work, and can noticeably see the struggles of the camera. The phones do not come close to professional cameras. The iPhone produces lot of pixelization due to artificial intelligence--it is not close to a full frame camera. I do have a Sony a7III, as well

When used properly, the iPhone is totally passable and acceptable to use in real estate in most conditions. The main reason for this is, the majority of people looking at real estate photos are not looking at photos on large screen XDR displays and pixel peeping, but rather, they are looking at the photos on their mobile device and imagining themselves in the space. In some of these examples, it really looked like the edited images were jpgs and not raw files from the iPhone. You also kind hobbled yourself in the composition and ability to better manipulate the phone by attaching the phone mount backwards and literally blocking most of the display. Nice comparison nonetheless. Mobile phone cameras will only get better as time goes on. And the need to spend ludicrous amounts of money on traditional cameras and gear will fade into the past.

A phone is a valid replacement. No I'm not being ridiculous either. I just switched from my Canon to an s24. I edit everything in lightroom. On the phone bracketing isn't necessary. On the Canon it is. Yes I shoot in expert RAW on the phone. Saves a ton of time and post editing on both the feedback was actually better on the phone so I bought an external wide angle lense for the phone so I could shoot with the highest resolution possible on the phone. Being able to drop photos directly into the lightroom app and apply presets and edit immediately without having to photo merge every photo is a huge time saver! It's time to admit phone caught up lol
@ryandenton190
@ryandenton190 2 месяца назад
Note that all phone images come in sharper because they're digital, so you need to soften them up by adding a little more warmth, and removing some contrast and sharpness. Also always apply lense corrections. After doing so you'll be amazed at the results

I'll begrudgingly use an iPhone for 3D virtual tours, but never for video or photos! I just find the quality to be highly substandard. Definitely not too keen on doing these since the doll house thing is childish and unprofessional looking. I urge clients to get professional photos and/or videos over these bushleague options. One day I hope to be in a better place where I can remove these silly amateur options from my business. I cringe every time I see a doll house! The only thing worse are those vertically shot walk throughs. Looks like a clueless tourist shooting real estate. I really despise these horrible options. Some unprofessional hack came up with these bs options, and some like minded, low talent fool, in a place of unwarranted authority thought it would be a "great idea" if the entire industry followed this clueless unprofessional.
