Iran has been the scene of violent protests for months. Citizens are taking to the streets at the risk of their lives because they no longer want to live under the yoke of the ayatollahs. The regime has resorted to ruthless repression, leading to the shooting of hundreds of demonstrators and the imprisonment of countless others. Those imprisoned face the risk of torture or execution.
For years, the West has been trying to isolate Iran with strict trade sanctions. But they seem to have little effect on the human rights situation in the country. The regime is still in power and has found ways to circumvent the sanctions and continue receiving financial resources. This includes funding for the Revolutionary Guards, the 'guardians of the Islamic revolution', involved in brutally suppressing the protests.
How exactly do these covert cash flows operate? Zembla investigates the international network of Iranian sanctions evasion and comes across an Iranian- Dutch trading center, owned by a furniture and carpet dealer who maintains relationships with high-ranking officials in Tehran while also cooperating with the Iranian embassy in The Hague. Financial investigations into the trade center lead to the uncovering of a network of Iranian oil companies that are trying to evade international sanctions against the Revolutionary Guard through the Netherlands.
