Clip from 1972. Celine Hession & Donncha O Muimhneacháin (R.I.P) dance two slip jigs: Fig for a Kiss & Kid on the Mountain. The fiddle player is Paddy Glackin. The young lad sitting beside Seamus Ennis is the one & only Noel Hill. The greatest concertina player to ever grace this earth.
Donncha if your up there keep dancing & we'll meet at a later date, from your friend ~~~ Mícheál.

Love the heavy shoe slip jig!! Wouldn’t it be nice to bring this back to the competitive Irish Dance scene

WOW!!!! That was just Awesome. I've never seen the Irish step dance done that way. It just shows you that old school retains the pure beauty of the art without all of the theatrics and flashy stuff. :-)

I love this. Hard shoe slip jig. Fabulous. Also the lower rocks…they were still low when I started, rather than being so high up on the toe, like now.

paddy glackin champion fiddle player for the last forty years is playing at his best on this clip . when I was dancing the music always played a part in how good I danced , carl hession celines brother played a great real and what a piano player he was and still is you could really dance your best when he played

Thanks so much for this clip. If only stepdancing were still like that--about rhythm, precision, and enjoying oneself, rather than flashy, weird steps and even flashier, weirder costumes.

@@IrieFieryshe wouldn’t have worn that outfit for competition and he wouldn’t be wearing trousers, but it was for a TV show and then they would have done exhibition or Ceili. Love the actual steps though.

I return to this captivating performance from time to time. The more I watch it the more I realize it presents the unique opportunity to witness a magical moment of the student becoming a master. At 1:45 you can see Celine's face showing the intense concentration. Donncha shows none of that. He is the thing, no separation to conquer. Celine has grabbed the lightning bolt and smiles. Her effort and application are coalescing into mastery in THIS moment and history got it on film. True treasure.

Apart from the outstanding performance I'm struck by how respectful and attentive the audience is. Not a whisper. Something enviable about their connection to the simple pleasure of a REAL art form instead of iPod/ DTV frenzy.

If only competitive Irish dance (which I did until 2006) would start to pare the look down again. Dresses in the 70s are probably my favorite, though that was long before my time. There was just a lot of variety and they look so comfortable. The champion look today is really just child pageant-and I thought it looked bad in 2001! Little did I know...

what amazes me with this dancing is the stamina you need to keep that up for so long. Certainly a cardio workout. I've even seen old fellas at weddings dancing with agility. Hats off to them.

I went to the world championships in London this year , really great to watch great dancers again , I was a dancer with celine hession back in the late 1960 and 70th celine was such a great teacher and still is , I loved dancing after leaving peggy carty as celine wasn't so strict and I loved the hession style, listening to all celine told me I went on to win the Connaught championship in Roscommon in 1970 ,and won a lot of competition with Deirdre coyne two hand reel we never lost and the three hand with mave o' connor both great dancers , watching this masterpiece is like going back to galway 45 years ago . thank you for posting this archive

Thanks So Much For Posting This! I’ve looked at it several times but was compelled to leave a note today. I knew Celine and Donnacha. I was one of Rita O’Shea’s dancers along with my Sister Patty. Patty is dying soon from cancer. I play her these videos of our music and dance and it gives her peace and happiness - but peace and happiness seem trite at a time like this - I know there’s a word in Irish for it but I won’t attempt to recall it. If anyone has suggestions I’m living for it. Anyway Thanks and

Donncha O'Muíneacháin and Celine Hession. The battering Slip Jig! If there was only one video I was allowed with me.This would be the one. Dear Donncha, I spent many hours learning at his side and his council and support is sorely missed. The day he started teaching me this SlipJig I shall never forget. On the way home,I had to stop, because my knees were shaking...No, not from the dancing (I was very fit then) It was from shock and pure bliss.

Sean nos dancing was danced many years ago. Then this type of dancing that this couple is doing nearly took over but all of a sudden sean nos dancing has taken over again. Sean nos means old style. It’s all lovely and steps to all types of dancing have to be learned nowadays. But it was river dance with Michael Flatley and Jean Butler that really brought Irish dancing to where it is today!both US citizens of Irish background. It’s hard work!!! And many more males are stepping it out than before... it’s a great revival and there are dance schools all over the world now. Long may it continue as the language was forbidden as was Irish dancing... but those days are gone TG.
