'The prisoner' has a special place in my heart, because I discovered it in a year when I was almost falling in depression. It really felt like a prison. My inner thoughts, encounters and experiences with other people were bad, and most of my friends went away to another country to work or study, so I couldn't even have some help. Almost finishing that year, I heard that song and it was amazing how it got me so pumped up. I was jumping and singing with tears of happiness falling down my face. After that I started fixing my own life, reworking on my thoughts and feeling alive again. It's amazing how music can change you. This masterpiece is something that will stay with me fondly forever.

Just a little tip because I know a lot of random facts about Iron Maiden: 22 Acacia Avenue is not just about A prostitute, it is specifically about Charlotte "The Harlot", a mythical figure in the world of prostitution who was rumored to have lived on 22 Acacia Avenue in the 1800s. It is part of a saga of songs written by Iron Maiden including "Charlotte the Harlot" and "From Here to Eternity", which loosely references the Film with the same name.

Great album. I appreciated this retrospective. All your observations were pretty spot on. I consider myself a pretty hardcore metal head, and I've been listening to a lot of the classics recently. In fact, I listened to two of the albums you mentioned in this video yesterday(Powerslave, Heaven & Hell). I also watched your best albums of the year video, and I appreciated your insights there, as well. In fact, I picked up two albums on your recommendation; Labyrinth Constellation and Roads to the North. I had heard good things about both albums beforehand, but your recommendation was the tipping point. I've yet to listen to either of them, but I am really excited about getting to them. Anyway, keep up the great work!

Really enjoyed your perspective and review of this album, but no mentioning of the blossoming Thrash And Speed Metal that took place (mostly) on the West Coast punk scene with bands like DRI and Battalion Of Saints? And maybe even the sludgy, Black Sabbath-esque sound of Flipper and My War era Black Flag? I know these examples aren't heavy metal, but I feel like it gives a better perspective of just how important this genre (Heavy Metal) became when future artists mixed it with other genres, like Punk or Noise. You still did manage to do this album justice, I never did get big into Heavy Metal as much as Punk and Noise, but I always liked Sabbath and Iron Maiden, and I always loved this album.

*Some suggestions for classic album reviews:* *"Songs About My Cats" by Venetian Snares* Venetian Snares was probably one of the biggest drill 'n bass artists of the early 00s - especially after Aphex Twin's hiatus. This album was his debut and truly his most gritty and hard hitting as of yet. Oh and it's about cats. His cats. *"The Richard D. James Album" by Aphex Twin* Aphex Twin was another prominent figure in drill 'n bass and breakcore, and this album truly showcases his technical skill and his undeniable (yet slightly evil) genius. *"The Trans-Canada Highway" by Boards of Canada* Boards of Canada create truly enchanting atmospheres in their slightly haunting ambient tracks. Sometimes, no percussion is needed - since the songs on this album are so complex and melodic at times. *"Homework" by Daft Punk* Daft Punk's first (and best) album was just perfect. No song dragged on, there was lots and lots of creativity and at times, DP didnt even need vocals because the tracks were already full of energy. 90s electronica ftw

Try the first two if you haven't. To me, the first three Maiden records display the most personality because they kind of standardized their sound beginning with Piece of Mind. The first three have a little bit of that punk edge (don't kill me, Steve), too, which disappeared afterward.

Dear Anthony, I started listening to this band in 2010 with your Review on 'The Final Frontier'. I was never into them before and the whole album itself makes sense!. BUT nowadays i like to eat 'fish and chips' more and hate discussions about 'Fear of the Dark', because I have no fear in the dark.

Van Halens style of guitar soloing was hugely influential in metals development, can't really be brushed off with a ''sigh these insignificant plebs''.

If I can advice an interesting album that I think is pivotal in the shift from metal as a bluesy genre, to it's more "pure" metallic onslaught form: Stained Class - Judas Priest, from 1978. It is their final album form their classic phase, before they adopted their more commercial sound. Curiously enough, none of it songs are live staples, but nonetheless, it is considered by many fans to be one of their best (if not their best) work. It contains a lot of elements that you would not really associate with the Priest, like complex song structures and tempo changes, and lyrics that are NOT cheesy, but actually quite thoughtful. I would really love to see your take on this album! :)
@GizmoFan1
@GizmoFan1 9 лет назад
Bram Claes Judas Priest is associated with overly cheesy and just plain bad lyrics, not thoughtful ones.

Timothy E. I own their whole discography, and as such, I am perfectly aware of that. However: their early (pre 1978's Hell Bent For Leather) work is mostly an exception to that rule, and the their second and fourth album (sad wings of destiny, and stained class) are just godly. I highly recommend checking them out, especially if cheesiness and simplicity is what bugs you the most about Priest (or metal in general)
@GizmoFan1
@GizmoFan1 9 лет назад
Bram Claes I don't mind the cheesiness, I like it; I prefer their '80s and '90s stuff because it's heavier, not so much into what basically just sounds like blues with more distortion to me on a lot of early heavy metal.

+Bram Claes Agreed, that one and Killing Machine are maybe the first typical Metal albums. I still prefer Sad Wings and Screaming For Vengeance though.

Powerslave is better. But it's still awesome you're finally doing some metal. Hoping for Rust In Peace next year. Thank you *insert play on your name let's settle on Deaththony Thrashtano today*.

As this is classics week I think Nomber Of The Beast is totally justified. I agree it has some lackluster tracks (Gangland and partly Invaders), but it contains some of the best moments of the bands discography. While I think Powerslave is stronger overall, this the more iconic album and with Hallowed Be Thy Name and The Number Of The Beast it also has my 2 favourite Maiden songs.
@Warstub
@Warstub 9 лет назад
R0DisG0D agree, disagree, for me Seventh Son has all the songs I like (read as "I like all the songs") and a unified theme that connects them all together. It's fantastic. But listening to Number now, I am really getting how it follows on from Killers while bringing in the classic Maiden sound.
@EarendilUndomiel
@EarendilUndomiel 9 лет назад
There is too much filler on Powerslave for it to be their best in my opinion; those tracks being Losfer Words (Big Orra), Flash of the Blade and Back in the Village. The remaining five tracks are among their best though, with the title track or Mariner probably being my favorite song by them. The only real filler on The Number of the Beast is Gangland. They should have put Total Eclipse on the album instead (it is on the CD edition), which is probably Bruce's best vocal performance ever.

You forgot mention that 22 Acacia Avenue is the 2nd in a series of three songs that include Charlotte the Harlot, 22 Acacia Avenue, and From Here to Eternity, they're a story arch of Charlotte.

I think that any album that came after No prayer for the dying is very underrated. It's truth that the first seven albums are legendary but Dance of death and the Book of souls are also great.

They started to repeat themselves real soon. Glad they are still being creative and rock in though. One of those bands that peaked early for me. Prefer Diannos stuff

My favorite from Maiden is Somewhere in Time. I don't know why, I know it's not perfect but the blend of cool 80's synth and those cool lyrics about being a stranger in the future really reminds me of movies like Blade Runner. I don't know, I just love that album to death!

Agree it's not quite hellish but I love number of the beast and to be honest, I always get a farmland, cornfield, scarecrow, Friday the 13th part 3 vibe but I know that's not what they were going for.
