If someone uses the word “Negros”, how would you feel? Would you find it offensive? Well, recently the Filipino boyband SB119 tweeted 'Hello Negros!' to their fans which created a buzz on Twitter and are now accused of being racist. But did you know that “Negros” can mean something entirely different in the Philippines? Do average Filipinos find the word 'Negro' offensive or not? We hit the streets of Manila to find out.
The opinions expressed in this video are those of individual interviewees alone and do not reflect the views of ASIAN BOSS or the general Filipino population.
Our vision is to build a lasting grassroots movement of young people from every country to report on real social and cultural issues. We believe having meaningful discussions with people with different opinions is extremely important.

The word "negro" , telling a black person that he's a negro here in the Philippines is the same as telling a white person "meztiso", a brown person "moreno" and an asian person "chinito". If you americans put malice in the word "negro" , don't compare your culture and language to ours. Filipinos are proud people, in our culture, if you are a negro, you should be proud of being a negro we don't need to be offended if someone called us negro. I hate when westerners come to our country and are telling us that their culture and language is the right one and our culture is the wrong one. Westerners coming to the Philippines saying that calling black people negro is disrespectful are like Filipinos going to western countries saying that not using "po" and "opo" to elders is disrespectful. Don't force other countries that what they are doing is racist just because it is racist in your culture

It's not "westerners" who are offended, it's Americans. Tagalog is heavily influenced by Spanish, and the words you mentioned are literally Spanish words. Negro is the Spanish word for the colour black, so there's absolutely no racial connotations. Most Europeans are aware of that and would never take offence over that.

The number of times I showed my mom kpop and had to explain that they were saying "I" and not the N-word is never ending and always kinda of funny. But people who are sensitive about the word negro have their reasons. The N word which was created from negro and was specifically created to dehumanize black people in Africa and slave time America is the word people should steer clear from. I can understand sensitivity to :negro" and "colored " BUT as many say context is key. Thankfully the US does not monopolize words .👾👌🏾

This is a very interesting video. For the most part, I believe most Filipinos are not racist. One of the ladies who commented said that most Filipinos are dark skin. She is so correct. Having been station in the Philippines when Clark Air Base (Angeles) existed in the Philippines. I did not have no problems from anyone in the Philippines that treated me bad because of my color. I was able to go everywhere, if anything being who I am might have attracted more people to like me which was just great. So, I do not worry about that. Oh yes, there is a area in the Philippines called Negros. The Philippines are beautiful and the people are wonderful too. From US American Air Force Security Police Military Veteran who lived in the Philippines.
@yelloe
@yelloe 3 года назад
Negro is a Spanish word. Its not supposed to be offensive by itself but can be if used deragatorily against someone. But every individual takes words differently. Philippines was colonized by Spain for hundreds of years so it makes sense they have Spanish words in language, names, cities, islands. I used to live in Negros Occidental. Which in spanish means western blacks. I have a theory that the Spanish named the area that because people there have darker skin? Or the Spanish brought dark skinned Native Americans there. Just as they brought filipinos to the Americas to meet with Native Americans. Idk if Spain named the area that or Filipinos tho. There are many Filipinos who arent racist but some can be. It really depends on indivudual. But colorism there does exist to an extent.

Wow! That's the first time I heard about it, and that is the most ridiculous thing I ever heard. Why is it North Americans want to impose their culture on other peoples? Look at “cultural appropriation”. They are gatekeeping foreigners from adapting Asian cultures, calling them names, shaming name, and cancelling them. They pretend they are doing us Asians a favour when, in reality, we welcome and appreciate that non-Asians find our culture worth their time. Here, “nega” happens to be the short form of “negative”, so if they react to that in a bad way, it fits them perfectly, “nega”-tive. Also, as Africans have said repeatedly, they use it naturally because “negro” means “black” no matter how and where you look at it. And for them Africans who grew up in Africa, they've been using the word long before colonialism started. They even have old maps from the pre-colonial area, and lands were named “negro” here and there! Are the Africans, who are blacks, racist then? These people imposing their culture on others… they need to learn the world doesn't revolve around them. It is understandable why they are reacting that way, however, forcing other people, other cultures at that, to conform to their own, is crossing the line. That is nothing other than a colonial/invader attitude.

We don't think it's okay to call black people negro. That is not the case. We call them negro because since the very start of our history with the Spanish people, we have called them negro already. AND THAT WAS SINCE 1500s. And foreigners with ugly connotation of our word negro implies that we stop using our word? That's a NO. The original Filipinos are black people and they are aware that they are negroes. AND IT MEANS NOTHING NEGATIVE TO THEM. We understand the ugly connection of the word negro with history of slavery and how it comes across to black people. But the Hispanic world where negro originated and which PURELY MEANS COLOR black, did not eliminate the word from Spanish vocabulary and if they did, would have helped the black people to cut memories of slavery. But why would they eliminate the word negro when they, and all Spanish colonies including the Philippines have no part in the slavery that happened? South America and all former Hispanic colonies continues to use the word negro for its sole meaning-black, and nothing else. No country would eliminate or stop using any of their words, just because some of their foreign visitors have negative connection with those words. Fortunately for the over 11 million Filipinos outside the Philippines, they have been aware to use black instead of negro when referring to black people. Above all, the word negro stays to be used NOT to insult any black people AT ALL.

Fun Fact: The United States has a VERY different relationship with racism than many other countries. It's why they tend to overreact to situations involving race while other countries don't see the issue. Come on U.S. not everyone has the same relationship with race around the world. Also,does depend on the culture and content because Hispanics will call dark skinned girls "morenita" or "morena" and I don't have an issue calling myself a morenita and most dark girls don't, but it literally does denote a "dark" girl. Some could take offense to that if they don't understand.

To our black brothers in sisters out there, the word “negro” wasn’t meant as a racial slur. It was derived from Spanish, and it simply means a black person. There’s no underlying derogatory meaning to it whatsoever. Similar to how we call the Whites, “puti” or “kano.” Out of ignorance, almost everyone here in the Philippines think that a White person is automatically a White American. Even if you’re British or French, most of the time, they would call you “kano.” The only derogatory terms that I know Filipinos are using against black people are “ulikba” and “baluga.” These terms are rarely used to describe people of African descent, but they use it to mock our black skinned minorities, the Aetas and Negritos.
@lukeraagas8035
@lukeraagas8035 4 года назад
@888nex W. yes but thats the problem its not a racial slur, its just a word that identify what ethnicity you are, if negro is racist might as well ban caucasian as it means white. The only reason it became problematic and controversial was because of african slavery. We should all understand context, yes we can all speak negro in the philippines but we should be wary of who we say it to, we can say it jokingly to friends but for a stranger it might be offensive. And thats the point, context matters
@GaryHField
@GaryHField 4 года назад
888nex W. yeah, a lot of that happens here. Filipinos are actually more of a bully on their own countrymen than other nationalities. If the person you’re referring to is a dark-skinned Filipino with a short stature and kinky hair, he/she is an Aeta/Negrito. They’ve been here for thousands of years, before our Austronesian ancestors settled the archipelago.

We do not discriminate black people because our ancestors are also black.

DunDeeoZ I don’t think the comment was about the description of negros (meaning black or dark). The word was used as a derogatory word for black Americans during the slave trade and after. I am a fan of SB19 and the time when this blew up we really had a lot of explaining here and there with the Americans on the replies. I posted a few screenshots that i got from google explaining the origin of the place and i asked for forgiveness just for extra measure since some of them really took it negatively. But i was soooo surprised because Americans who replied to my tweet said that we shouldn't be sorry for it because it was in a different context and SB19 didn't mean harm. I'm just glad my fellow fans handled it correctly without causing more damage. Some also checked out the group too and they liked them.

A foreign friend of mine cut ties with me when I posted a part of The Little Prince which contained the word. I was so young, I didn't know that it would offend anyone. I've always thought that it was a normal term. We have a lot of tribes in PH with different physical features. We were always told to respect every culture and beliefs, that includes race and colors. I understand that those who get offended have may encountered people who use the term to offend people, but please, be open to the possibility that not everyone is like that. It really hurt me when he cut ties with me even though I did my best to explain.
