Is the 4Runner Better?
Do 33s really make a difference?
Am I bad at driving?
In this video, we do an Off-Road comparison between a 2020 Jeep JLU Rubicon and a 2021 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road.
Both vehicles are rocking 33 inch All terrain tires so it should make for a pretty interesting comparison!! It’s also winter here at Tahuya ORV in Washington State which should make things that much more fun with some snow in the forecast.

Both are good offroad vehicles. It shows that the 4 Runner with a mild build can go toe to tie with Jeep. The Wrangler will clear 35” tires from the factory and that would eliminate the breakover and clearance issues.

One thing I can say, is that when I'm out on the back roads of Arizona in my 4runner, I see a lot of jeeps broken down. So, despite the statistics, the jeep will get you out into the bush, but the 4runner will make sure you get home.😁

I have a JKUR and had a 97 4Runner for daily driver in CO. Go to the tough trails in CO and UT and you mainly just see Jeep Wranglers. High country CO trails you do see Tacomas. I was in a 4x4 club in CO, formula was: get a Rubi, lift it, larger tires, aftermarket steel bumpers front and rear, winch, side rails to slide along the boulders, and you are good to go.

No, nothings ‘better’ at off-roading than a jeep. But I’ll still take my 4Runner off-roading over a jeep as I know it will always get me home and last twice as long. But pure off-road capability, the jeep is more capable and everyone who off-road knows that, especially all of us R4unner owners.

Question about the 4Runner. I see you are running P285 70R17 tires with a 1.5 spacer lift. What is clearance in the wheel wells like at full lock on steering and full stuff on flex? We do long overlanding treks of moderate or easy difficulty with little to no rock crawling and with large swathes of highway to and from so the Lexus suits us well. And contrary to comments above, my experience is that Jeeps can have much fewer breakdowns than Toyotas when you really push capabilities of the vehicles.

I've had a Tacoma, a 4Runner, and a Jeep. Toyota's are great, but if you plan to build up an off-road capable machine, you can't really touch a Jeep. A Rubicon will fit up to a 39-inch tire with a small lift. If you want to go 40 plus you should upgrade the axles. I still have a Land Crusier, and it can do a lot, but for serious off-roading, it's the Jeep. Before you say Toyota's are more reliable, the truth is that a Toyota in more extreme off-road breaks far more. Unfortunately, we can't get the more serious 70 series Land Cruiser here like Australia. Those would be at the top of my list...

His tacoma saw almost all pavement and ended breaking down on a commute to work. The transmission melted, about 65k miles. I haven't had a single problem with my jlu on a 3" lift and 35s over the 4 years of daily driving and going on trips down south and up the mountains. Sometimes it's not all black and white.

I actually was able to improve my (real world) breakover angle with spring rubbers (stiffens the suspension) with no change to ground clearance and no change therefore to "on paper" breakover angle. This was proven via a breakover obstacle that I just barley scrape. This is a functional difference. An important lesson is also that while stiffer suspension might not flex as well, it will hold ground clearance better! Weirdly, I didn't lose much corner travel flex at all when I did some corner travel tests. Perhaps the load in the corner travel test was great enough to overcome the stock suspension and the stiffened stock suspension. I'm not sure. All I can say is what happened. So even if the 4 runner and the Wrangler had exactly the same ground clearance and exactly the same wheelbase, because independent suspension winds up having higher wheel rates due to different motion ratios, it can wind up having better real world clearance - and I'm not even including the better center clearance that it usually has.
@520overland
@520overland Год назад
That makes sense! I think I definitely oversimplified for my calculations in this video but definitely need to go through just suspension setups and changes more in depth. There are so many variables but thanks for explaining your changes with spring rubbers!

It’s like comparing oranges to apples, both are fruits and both are edible. I think it would be fair to compare an entirely stock vehicles vs vehicles with modifications such as lift kits, spacers and larger tires. I own a Jeep Rubicon and for over landing it’s just as fine as a 4Runner (to me) I drove both and didn’t notice that much difference, now, ability to somewhat easily modify my vehicles and a huge aftermarket is a winning factor for me with the Jeep. I mean if you want your Jeep faster and quieter on a highway, don’t put 35’ or 37’ on, especially for overland driving it’s pointless and purely for looks.

When I heard a RU-vidr say that their Jeep Gladiator is considered high mileage with 130,000 miles it shocked me. My 3Rd gen 4Runner has 230,000 miles and that's nothing for these vehicles. But Jeeps are more offroad worthy than Toyotas, especially with the FSA, and locker plus they have so many options and can be high horsepower compared to the 4Runners V6.

But here is a problem, when you have low range, horsepowers dont matter, horsepower comes in play on open road but jeep doesnt have suspension to give you the full benefit of those extra horses. Price and space are better diffrentiators when it comes to comparing two.

Ive had both, now a 21 diesel wrangler. 4runners are capable, but the IFS limits the 4runner from deeper flexing, but IFS is better on desert trails for more speed and jumping. Jeeps crawls much better on mountain trails. On the maountain trails where i live, toyotas tend to slow down traffic on the badge of honor trails.

Independent suspension, as long as it has tires on the ground , will have BETTER traction if they had the same tire size. And remember most of the time your tires are on the ground. Once you get all of your angles over 30° or so life is pretty good. If you have approach and departure over 35° you're not really going to have any problems. And usually if you can get your break over above 28 or so you're not going to have any problems. Spacer lifts are fine. I have a 2 inch spacer. Yeah it rides a little stiffer but it's nothing that 3 psi lower tire pressure won't fix , really.

@@520overland - the 2022 Grand Cherokee Trailhawk is pretty good. But something of a 'push-button' off road vehicle. The 2023 GC is in Hybrid only and I don't think that will actually help sales. I had a Toyota FJ Cruiser for 10 years and it didn't have very much in the way of gadgets, it was just very good at what it did. I was going to wait for the 2024 4Runner, but as the new 4Runner appears to be coming in 2025, I don't know what I will be doing now.

As much as I like Toyotas I would not get rid of my 2 door wrangler. Granted it has some serious mod on it. I would not trust a front independent suspension in many places where a solid axle setup would have no issue. Hell I was going to get a FJ some time back. They were put out to compete with the wrangler. Due to the front suspension the had many issues including roll overs. Where the jeep did not have these issues. Dont bash me for being pro jeep. I do like Toyotas a lot. An older full axle Toyota is far more capable then the newer ones.

That was a good comparison. What was the new cost of the Rubicon? It seemed to be stock and if not stock with any modifications? What was the cost of the 4Runner with modifications including tires? I believe a comparable Jeep "out of the box" will out off-road a comparable 4Runner. As far as on-road, a 4Runner will be smoother but the transmission shifts a lot more while at highway speed in hilly or mountainous terrain.
@520overland
@520overland Год назад
The Jeep brand new ran 52k. It probably has about 1.5k in modifications between the winch upfront and the steps/sliders. I believe the 4Runner was 45k and has about 5k in mods between the lift, wheels, tires, rack, and steps/sliders. Let me get back to you on that number though! I guess that brings up another good point in what would give you the best bang for your buck! Also, funny you brought that up about the transmissions. We were just talking about that. Engine power wise both vehicles have similar numbers but the 5speed transmission on the 4Runner definitely does a lot more shifting and doesn’t put down power as efficiently as the 8 speed in the Jeep.
