Is Anxiety All in Your Head, Or Is It In Your Body?

The body and brain are one interconnected system, which means you can’t treat anxiety effectively by using only drugs or psychotherapy. You need to treat the body, because the body and brain are one interconnected system. Unfortunately, conventional medicine plays the name and blame game. It says, you are “anxious;” you need an “anti-anxiety” medication. But saying you are anxious explains nothing about why you have anxiety. Functional Medicine takes a different approach. By taking a detailed history and personalized approach, it seeks to get to the root of the issue.
In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with his colleague, Dr. George Papanicolaou, to discuss how they treat patients suffering with anxiety.
George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. He is also an Institute for Functional Medicine Practitioner. Upon graduation from his residency he joined the Indian Health Service. He worked on the Navajo reservation for 4 years at the Chinle Comprehensive Medical Facility where he served as the Outpatient Department Coordinator. In 2000, he founded Cornerstone Family Practice in Rowley, MA. He practiced with a philosophy centered on personal relationships and treating the whole person, not just not the disease. He called that philosophy “Whole Life Wellness”. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive this kind of personal care Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health - a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. Dr. Papanicolaou to join The UltraWellness Center in 2017.

While a lot of anxiety is from or made worse by gut, diet or thyroid problems, lack of sleep etc. but many, many people have anxiety from childhood or adult trauma and this should be taken into account in the person's evaluation. Dr Hyman mentions this briefly, but then they don't reiterate it.

Our daughter had been given one super dose of metronidazole for a std and for a month an a half her life turned in to a non stop panic attack. Seriously. Doc, psychiatrist, neurologist, e.r., everyone said it couldn't be the metro, it was out of her system. The psych finally put her on Zoloft a month in , which finally let her sleep more than two hours a day. She couldn't work, hardly are and couldn't participate in life. We finally did our own research and discovered metro caused severe thiamine deficiency. The minute we got her up to 600 mg thiamine hcl, all symptoms left. Back to work three months after this nightmare started. Our family will never think of anxiety the same way. Diet has so much to do with how we think and feel. Thanks for all your work and how you share it with us.

Wow, that is a fascinating story, JC! Isn't it interesting that all those doctors, ones we are taught to respect and trust their opinions (the doctor, psychiatrist and neurologist) were all wrong! Glad she is better.

I was put on a course of moxifloxicin (a strong fluoroquinolone type antibiotic) for a serious middle ear infection, after taking it for just 2 days I went into the most horrific state of panic attack imaginable, it was traumatic and pretty much gave me PTSD, that was months ago but I'm still trying to get over it, the panic attack slowly stopped once I discontinued the moxifloxicin but it has left me with an oversensitised nervous system in a constant state of high anxiety. The doctors pretty much shrugged off my suggestion that the moxifloxicin may have caused the panic and anxiety, but it just seems too coincidental and the safety information for moxifloxicin even says that it can cause extreme agitation, anxiety, and the risk of wanting to cause harm to yourself or others.

20:00 this is exactly what was happening to me 1 year ago. I was having breathing episodes that would last 30 minutes where I felt like I wasn't getting enough oxygen. During the episodes, my stomach would descend out a lot. I was extremely depressed and would sometimes get horrible leg cramps along with leg twitches. I had a really bad diet for about a year prior and a lot of stress from my job. I went to emergency room once because of a bad breathing episodes, I told them about my work stress and super bad diet of lots of sugar & carbs and that I often ate too much and before going to bed. I told them that I thought I had a digestive issue. They took some exrays of my liver, pancreas and kidney. No issues there. They did blood work. My glucose was elevated but they said no issues with my blood test. So, they diagnosed me with hypertension and anxiety. Soon after, I saw my primary doctor who just said it was anxiety and as most doctors do, tried to prescribe anti-anxiety meds. I thought that the doctors were missing the real cause and felt that they weren't going to be able to help me so I had to try and help myself. I did a lot of research and figured I may have an overload of bad bugs in my gut and possibly leaky gut along with inflammation and nutrient deficiencies. I decided to go on an anti-inflammatory diet and to implement minerals and vitamins. I also quit my high stress job. This is what saved me! Within 1 month my symptoms were gone. I no longer listen to everything doctors tell me without doing my own research as well. I don't really blame my doctor. He's a "15 minutes doctor" They don't or can't spend enough time with each patient to really get to the bottom of things.

I had a botched surgery that has left me in constant, 24/7, horrific pain. 1) the doktor wouldn't take responsibility for his mistake, which hurt me to the core. This attitude is causing panic attacks. 2.) the actual pain causes panic attacks. 3) the doktor got on top of me and broke my nose, which he denies doing. PSTD and nightmares. I was awake during the surgery, but I was given a drug that made it impossible for me to talk or move. IF I could have gotten up and escaped, I would have. Yes, I tried getting an attorney but without $85K to get other doctors to testify, I was out of luck. It's a Brotherhood that's taking it's toll on those of us who were victims of their medical malpractice. I just want to feel better. Thanks for all you do for us Dr Hyman and guests.

I had no idea what anxiety was a few yrs ago. I heard of it from people but never knew the definition. After seeing content on the subject, i actually developed it. I say it's all in the mind and how you choose to deal with situations. Its like in N.Korea certain words dont exist, so that certain ideas dont manifest. I think a lot of mental health topics actually cause those very issues in people who consume the content and misdiagnose themselves. It does more damage than good

Thanks for the tips! There are many great ways to manage anxiety, the 21rst century curse, but has existed since the beginning of time! This is one of my favorite mantras, "All shall be well and all shall be well and all manner of things shall be well"...from the 13th century English monk Julian of Norwich, England! Hasn't been around that long for nothing because it works! In fact, King Charles the Third had it on the beautiful hand embroidered screen at his recent magnificent, beautiful coronation! Keep the faith no matter what your personal beliefs are!

Great show... I have been working with a FM doc for 8 months now with the family, 47, 40 & a 3 year old... we all have various autoimmune disorders, eczema, psoriasis, leaky gut etc... everything is great so far aside from the fact that the quality supplements we have been taking are now impossible to get because the stocks are depleted due to this shutdown of the system... now what???

Hi CRYPTO, LOOK INTO "MEDICAL MEDIUM" CHANNEL AND HEAL FROM AUTOINMUNE, ECZEMA, PSORIASIS FOR EVER AND EVER. ITS ALL ABOUT NOT FEEDING BAD VIRUS AND BACTERIA. We all have them in our body but there are moments in our life we are under stress or we struggle with a shock moment and our inmune system let this bugs over grow. Causing all type of mental disorders. I Had ANXIETY, PANIC ATTACK, LEAKY GUT, I WAS EVEN DIAGNOSED WITH DEMENTIA AND CURED 100% WITH FOOD and a some supplements. YOU CAN HEAL 100%

Everybody I know that has anxiety does not have a partner to cuddle up with. I had anxiety until I found a partner. I had no idea that I needed a partner, it just happened. This is when I looked at other people who had anxiety and saw their lack of a cuddle partner.

Here's one for you super sleuths...I have severe osteoporosis and would love to address it without (or in addition to if absolutely necessary) the drugs. Can you do a conversation on that topic please? As a health coach and yoga instructor I'm constantly learning from people like you and other resources and my lifestyle habits are probably in the top 10% of Americans. I'm perplexed by my condition! Dr. Hyman, your Doctor's Farmacy conversations mean the world to me and those I share them with. We deeply appreciate your work.

Hope you have been able to resolve the troy cause of the cause. If not, there's a Chemist in S FL named Jay Foster, who treats patients using FM. My friend's mother had severe osteoporosis many years ago and he cures her. Look him up online and call his office for a consultation. Good luck!
