Is Cohabitation Good for Relationships?
You’re in a conversation and someone says, “It doesn’t really matter if you get married. All that matters is that you live together and love each other.”
What Would You Say?
More people are cohabiting than ever before. In fact, more than 75% of married couples today lived together before they were married. Today, the number of homes with cohabiting couples is 15 times bigger than it was in 1960, and nearly half of kids will spend at least part of their childhood in an unmarried cohabiting home.
As a society, we’ve pretty well accepted the idea that “love” is all that is really necessary for a truly healthy relationship, not “a piece of paper” or a wedding ceremony. Not to mention, we often hear, it is financially wise to share expenses and couples should know whether or not they are compatible before getting married.
Social scientists have been studying marriage, family, and cohabitation for decades now. What they’ve found tells a much different story:
1. Cohabitation Creates Less Healthy, Happy Relationships
2. Cohabitation Leads to Greater Poverty, Infidelity, and Domestic Abuse
3. Cohabitation Hurts Women More than Men

The study that found cohabitation reduced marriage success was deeply flawed, it was prospective and looked at very religious couples that would not live together prior to marriage and would be more likely to stay together in an unhappy marriage due to cultural shame. Not actually a good outcome.

I agree with your statement.

The studies behind these claims are very dubious.

There’s no compelling reason to marry from men’s perspective any more. If women disagree then there’s always another one that won’t.

I guess cohabitation in western countries is quite common more than that of Asia.. Asia culture is strict, conservative.. cohabitation in Korea is considered not good relationship.. i am surprised to see high proportion of cohabitation in Western cultural.. it is different from Asia..Wouldn't be better to just get married if you love enough to live together??...i guess it is a universal idea in Korea...but these days birth rate in Korea is low compared to other countries.. like developed countries.. you know in developed countries, birth rate is low..but for Korea.. too low.... one of reason western countries is not that low for birth rate compared to Korea is that it is a society where cohabitation is acceptable..could it be possible Korea can be a society where cohabitation is acceptable?? it would take a lot of time to get there.. cause culture has been formed for a long time.. considering high proportion of birth rate in cohabitation, i guess it would raise birth rate slightly if awareness is pervasive to accept it in Korea..
