Continuing the quest to find a .22lr round that can out-penetrate the Federal Punch defensive round! Was the CCI Copper able to do the job. It's a tough round to find during the ammo shortage!

Being 74 years old and hunting for food along with fishing as my Hobbies for my entire life, from my early days Ground Squirrels have always been a problem. When CCI came out with the Stinger it solved the problem of wounded squirrels getting away. All of my Children have thanked me numerous times for the experiences I taught when they were young. Ammo comparisons have been awesome! What about running the Punch through your different barrel length guns to compare performance? I have a charger like yours and a regular 10/22, I wonder of there would be a sizeable difference between the two?

Could you test these into hard targets because again the copper 22 in my testing is consistently out penetrating the punch. I forgot to mention in my previous comment that im using a 10/22. My last test was through a 2 inch book backed by a saw blade followed by another 1 inch book and the punch stopped in the last book while the copper exited clean through? Love your content brother, keep up the great work!

Every time you do this punch test I'm amazed by the wound channel! Luckily I don't have to use a 22 for S/D but if I did I'd dang sure buy the punch! Another great test!

The CCI copper round really slapped the gel - HARD, but didn't penetrate very deeply. I think that would have translated into a devastating hit on a squirrel, rat, or similar pest. In fact, it might hit TOO hard at short range, if preservation of small game meat is part of the equation. The Punch round obviously carried much further into the gel blocks, which would probably make it a good choice for heavier-bodied small game and maybe up to coyotes at reasonable distances - say. 50 and maybe out to 100 yards or so. I guess it boils down to picking the load and bullet style that matches up with the job you want it to do. Nice video. Cheers.

Exactly! Punch is so extreme in penetration that it could be unsafe as a defensive round, though, as you say, it could have an application in hunting certain game at particular ranges.

I thoroughly have enjoyed watching your videos as of late, esp. on the .22lr Federal punch comparisons. I purchased 200 of those online for when I do carry my Taurus TX22 on occasion, and love what they can do... but what I'd love to see is a comparison of other "defense" .22 ammo like the Winchester silvertip. I don't think any of the others, like in your videos, will compare in penetration to the punch ammo, but what do they do defensively in comparison as an actual "defense" round, and what to expect of an advertised "defense" round. keep the vids coming!

The Federal Punch is simply the best performing 22lr cartridge on the market. I wish I could find some on a local shelf, but just haven’t seen it yet. Keep up the good work Tools!

something about that flatnose Punch! I wonder if those CCI Coppers would penetrate more if the nose was flattened. I was thinking punch was going to have an equivalent contender or option if you cant find the Punch! I believe these heavier rounds moving at close to same speed would have some other purpose use just depends on what you need it to do! at some point accuracy should come into play! Ive tested these two rounds into wood and books, the Copper 22 had about 40% more penetration. These coppers are about 20 or so years old and i just tried the punch. So my conclusion is gel produces different results then books & wood or these older coppers might be a little more feisty then the newer ones? I also noticed the punch was chewed up when recovered and the Copper was barely deformed. Maybe its the punch dumping energy faster. Anyhow sorry for rambling and thanks for these cool videos.

If you could ever find CCI's SGB, I'd love to see it tested in your format vs Punch. It has the flat nose, but is 40 grain, loaded to about Mini-mag velocity.

Should put them up against the fed auto match 40 gr. then to keep that fair lol. Wally's been having the auto match lately. Grabbed some and need to test them myself yet.They caught my eye when it said on the box (ideal for semi-auto).

You mean for optics? They're definitely not universal but I imagine some of them would be interchangeable. Not sure how you would figure out which ones though. Appreciate you brother.

You need to try a Winchester 40 grain FMJ 22 WMR ! That's the only that will give the punch a run for its money . In all seriousness the punch gives magnum performance in a 22 long rifle , very impressive round.

It's funny, I bought my charger years ago and it sat in the bag that it came with for quite awhile then I made a few modifications and it's one of my favorites now!

the punch combines a lighter bullet than std 40 grains but not too much with hot load, first .22lr not too far from 22 wmr, great choice for a lot of 22 lr guns such as the charger

Would you be willing to put punch against 22 magnum? Solids with both obviously. No other .22 LR will touch punch I’d just be curious to see it against a magnum rim fire. Thanks for doing this series of videos.

I tried some CCI Copper in gel using a 2.5 inch barreled revolver. I think I recall only about six inches of penetration in gel. Just not enough mass compared to heavier 40 grain round nosed pills.

Not only the penetration, but also the power when the bullet hit the target is important too. Aguila Interceptor shows better performance.(punching power and wound channel) Penetration is not everything.

Math doesn't lie. "Power" isn't measured by pictures in the gel. Punch - 135 ft-lb energy, Copper - 100 ft-lb energy.

Aguila makes two hot 22lr loads. One is a 30gn solid at 1700fps, the other is a 40gn solid at 1450fps. They are great loads.

Maybe we file the nose of another fast .22 round, shoot an unaltered round, then shoot the flattened nose altered round for comparison to see if it changes the amount of penetration into the jell... Could be interesting.

It's very hard lead with high tin content with a flat nose. Same idea as good center fire pistol bullets.

I wonder if it's the powder that federal is using in the punch to get these little .22s to do what they do or if there loading them hot or what? I know since you started this test looking for something to beat the punch that you have used some different ammo that was the same grain as these if not very close and they did not compare, so it's not that. I'm at a loss, I guess just take them for what they are and that is some awesome little rounds. Federal knocked it out of the park with these. CCI Copper is garbage and what we are stuck with for taking ANY game in CA. After 50 yards it won't hold a group, tumbles, and I've even seen it come apart in the air before hitting a target. Thanks for verifying!

I'll probably do that one but it wont even be close. The Velocitor is a hollow point. Unless it doesn't expand, it will stop way short. To be honest, I was just gonna put the Velocitors up against the Stingers to compare expansion.

Wow, I figured the Punch would peneteate the furthest, but I also expected the Copper to go further than that one did. Must be the flat nose on the punch that causes a pressure wave out ahead of it, or something along those lines. The fps being relatively close, and only 8grs of weight difference, there has to be some physics happening with that punch nose... Good video!

In a normal 2-6'' handgun nothing has beat the Punch. In the Ruger Charger nothing has beat the Punch. The only other thing I can think of available would be a sporter length rifle barrel of 22-24''

Have you tried Aguila Super Maximum? It's supposed to be rated at about 1750 FPS. If you haven't already done it I'd like to see that one out of the Ruger Charger's 10 inch barrel.

Someone did their homework on the Punch. Bullet weight and design is obviously the key. Nothing else comes close.

Don't know of a 22 round that can beat the punch. I don't think the sniper subsonic could beat it with it's 60 grain bullet.

I've tried some Blazer solids and they were actually one of the ones that came closest. I'm definitely gonna try a few more heavy weights.👍

What if you put the Punch up against another bullet made by Federal. They have something going great with the Punch wonder if their other 22 ammo is just as good
