I was a street cop for 30 yrs and was forced into an on-duty shooting three times w/my issued thirty-eight & it saved me every time. We transitioned to the Glock19, later the Glock23, my last few years on the job. The semi auto is a better fighting tool for today’s cops but in retirement my EDC is a light J Frame. An LCP is pocket carried if my revolver cannot be adequately concealed.

Has to be a decent semi-auto though. My agency replaced the S&W model 10 and 64 with the Beretta 92 DAO. The troops hated it and qualification scores dropped. It switched to the G21 despite fears that it was too thick for some hands but qualifications scores improved.

Glad you made it. I carried a revolver on duty until 2007 as my primary handgun. Changed to a Glock 22 when I became an FTO. I felt very comfortable with the revolver and noticed bad guys responses when I pointed it at them. ALL of them said they knew I was not bluffing when they saw the rounds in the cylinder facing them and knew it was loaded, or the one comment when I asked a felon why he did not follow directions to a lock armed officer, he said--"he was bluffing, he did not rack the slide and I know what that thing (pointing to my M66 .357) will do to me! Anyhow, after 32 years, my final day came and I was involved in an on duty shooting 10 minutes after I hit the street. I came out OK, with just one extra hole (knife--entered upper arm, exited elbow), but suspect was 3 for 3 on the receiving end of my Glock 22. I still qualify under LEOSA using my old pre-Model 10 .38 and feel very comfortable with it.

Btw, it's usually referred to as "crimp jump." So if you do additional research, you'll get more efficacious hits than typing on "bullet creep."
@LibertysetsquareJack
@LibertysetsquareJack Месяц назад
It's much more of a factor with rimless cartridges, whether quality made or not. That's because rimless cases headspace on the case mouth, as Gun Sam explains in this vid. Rimless ammo also tends to generate much higher pressures than rimmed ammo of equivalent performance, which is a factor Gun Sam didn't touch on. So you put those two factors together, and you got a recipe for crimp jumping, even with well manufactured ammunition.
@LibertysetsquareJack
@LibertysetsquareJack Месяц назад
And for anyone who may be wondering, "Well why does my Glock/Sig/Springfield etc. do fine with no discernible crimp jumping?", it's because an autoloader has a lot of reciprocating mass that distributes recoil energy, namely the slide; but even moving pieces such as a tilting barrel (Browning system) play a part: Newton's Laws, that if it overcomes inertia, it's absorbing energy, and translating that to movement. Also, autoloaders keep the un-chambered cartridges in a detachable magazine, which is well off bore-line, somewhat "seperate" from the pistol body (i.e. "floating" or "hanging" by the magazine catch), and the magazine body itself "contains" the OAL of the cartridge within form factor.

My Charter Arms Bulldog Pug in .44spl is famous for bullets creeping out of their cases. Light weight revolvers shooting hot loads will pull that bullet right out. @GunSam
@LibertysetsquareJack
@LibertysetsquareJack Месяц назад
@@iankelly3479A key difference though is that with a piece such as the Bulldog and 44 Special, the loads do indeed have to be very hot to have crimp jump (or just poorly made [i.e. usually handloaded], with terrible crimping). With rimmed ammunition, assuming it is properly manufactured, crimp jumping is a factor of the mass of the pistol being too light to absorb or distribute recoil forces relative to the energy imparted to the un-fired cartridges in the cylinder. So with a catridge such as 44 Special, crimp jumping can be eliminated completely by 1) not using ammo loaded beyond a certain "power" threshold, and/or 2) using a heavier pistol. With 9mm Luger, because of the nature of the rimless/autoloading/self-loading cartridge design in itself, crimp jumping is a consideration in any revolver ("light" or "heavy"), and even with target or paper punching ammunition.
@iankelly3479
@iankelly3479 Месяц назад

I do like those Critical Duty cartridges. That polymer plug in the hollow point does prevent cloth and debris from clogging the hollow point. I know a few people using the 9mm or .45-acp with moon clips in revolvers competition. Never for EDC carry. If only for capacity of ammo. Shooting revolvers in competition is a strategy to win. There are different shooting divisions. Revolver division do not compete with pistol divisions. More pistol shooters in IDPA. Usually only 1, maybe 2, shoot revolvers. So you win the revolver division by default.

I own both a 605 and a 905. I also handload 99% of what I shoot. I agree with most everything Sam says, and bullet "creep" is a real thing. I have found good neck tension from sizing die and bullet diameter is essential to preventing creep. Taurus moon clips are fairly thin and some don't hold the case tight enough so if pocket carried, some cases may fall out of the clip. I bought a bunch of TK moon clips and have never had a problem. My favorite 9mm SD/HD handloads are with RMR 124 gr "Nukes" over an upper charge of CFE Pistol. But I will continue to reload/shoot 38 Specials as I have been since 1972. Thanks Sam.

I carried a 1911 for over 30 years and practiced at 100 yards. I found out early on that I was always aiming too high. Point of aim will get you hits all the time with a full size 1911. My mistake at the beginning was thinking that the slow round would drop more than I imagined. I figured wrong. Accounting for ones height is why bullet drop does not really make a huge difference. Also, most misses will be high as you surmised on your video . Great video by the way.

I took the time to build a dual speedloader pocket pouch for my SP101. Wouldn't do it again but it's nice to have. I prefer the Safariland comp 2 loaders but my pouch will take them or HKS. I agree about the potential problems with moon clips so my revolver carry is either the SP101 or Taurus 850(38). Both take the same loaders. I like the 9mm in auto & carry a Hellcat but my revolvers are 38, 357, 44special or 45colt(Charter Bulldog). I really don't like 38 or 9mm but they're convenient. My 38 loads are still 148 wadcutters or 158 semi wadcutters. Thanks for the Wolfman link; I like anyone who respects Mr. Harrell.

As to speed loaders, the moon clips work pretty well but for .38/.357 I much prefer the Comp Ii loaders that only require you to press them into the cylinder to release the cartridges. Even with the twist type you use (I can never remember which way to turn them!) you don't need to remove them after release. Simply close the cylinder and it will "wipe" the loader away! No sweat! Cheers, jc

I dunno, a 5 shot speed loader is about the same size no matter what brand. And I should have said the Comp loader. The Comp II has the long handle on that's great for competition but not so great for carry. I think that's how Safariland names them. I've had my speed loaders for my revolvers for years and they just keep going. The only one that's ever quit is one I lost out out in the dusty desert many, many years ago! Cheers, jc

Any argument for 9mm will inevitably boil down to logistics, not ballistics.
@guaporeturns9472
@guaporeturns9472 Месяц назад
And logistics matter… and so do ballistics.
@BlakeHouse-j3u
@BlakeHouse-j3u Месяц назад
I NOT making an argument to switch . But there Is a difference in ballistics. Significant difference in Expansion Ratios , and laws of physics and Internal Ballistics. You will note the 9mm having 50 ft lb more energy . Indeed Ft Lb is poor predictor by itself , etc . But 20 % increase is meaningful. Absolutely, in this test , the performance is very close . But the Critical Defense +P is one of Sam's prefered .38 Snub loads , and the 9mm Critical Defense is kind of average . If you compared typical 110 and 125gr JHP .38 vs typical 115 and 124gr JHP 9mm , the difference would be more notable. Since I do own 9mm Revolver, I can point out additional downsides . 9mm Revolvers are surprisingly ammo sensitive . Ogive shape can prevent fully chambering , and sticky extraction can be seemingly random . So no , you can't randomly grab 9mm ammo , and assume it will work acceptably. Testing is required. And yeah , the bullet jump affects accuracy. But large % of snub Revolver owners haven't mastered the full accuracy potential of the gun . And large % of snub Revolver carriers , particularly as a BUG forsee only needing it at closer distances . Consider for yourself if the difference is meaningful to you . ******************* Not mentioned . If your Job requires you to only carry Issued Ammo , and the issued ammo is 9mm .... It gives the option of a snub Revolver as a BUG . ( Yes , there are valid reasons to prefer a Revolver BUG over a subcompact 9mm .)

Measure the cartridge length, fire four rounds and measure the length of the cartridge again. I can't do this because I don't have a 9mm revolver. The cost difference isn't enough to make sense though. I keep seeing people on blogs and such talking about how 38 is c. 25 cents a round and 9mm is like 17 cents, stuff like that. The thing is, no one brings up overhead costs and when a person will break even. If 38 is like 8 cents more per round, that's $4 more per box. So you're saving $4, theoretically. But in a real-world sense, how does that work? If a person goes out and buys a 9mm revolver for c. $450, their "savings" have to then break even with that outlay before they actually start saving anything. Even if you could acquire a 9mm revolver for cheaper, say $200, that means you have to go through fifty boxes of ammo (2,500 rounds) at $4 savings per box, just to break even. 50 boxes to break even, which means it's the 51st box that counts: that's almost exactly one box per week, every week. Most people simply don't shoot anywhere close to that much, as much as they might hate to admit it. On the other hand, for people who are going through literal cases of ammo, then 1) they buy at the case level anyway, which brings down costs per round significantly, and/or 2) they probably reload, especially when it comes to a catridge such as 38 Special, and reloading achieves a break even quite quickly and the resultant ammunition is both cheaper than off-the-shelf 38 Special **or** 9mm Luger. Even if a person sold their 38 revolver, let's say, and got the 9mm revolver with cash to spare, it still begs the question as to why not make the relatively tiny investment for reloading, especially for large amounts of shooting. A reloading for 38 investment would pay for itself after a case or less, and give the person more freedom in tailoring loads to themselves, their usage, and their weapon anyway, as opposed to reloading for 9mm. Divesting oneself of a 357 Mag revolver would be even more questionable, because the efficacy and "leg room" afforded by the 357 Magnum catridge is surrendered. On the flip side of that coin, if a person is only going to get a few, 20 round boxes of factory defensive ammo, just enough to get a feel for the round and to actually have some for defense, then there is the factor that Gun Sam mentioned a couple times in his vids: good quality, factory made, combat oriented, 38 Special +P is the same price as, or **cheaper** than, equivalent 9mm Luger. So whether a person has a dedicated 38 Special revolver, or they tend to shoots 38s out of their 357 Mag revolver, whether they go through cases of ammo, or just enough to make sure a particular load works well for them in their pistol; I fail to see where it makes economic sense to go pick up a revolver in 9mm Luger to "save money."

I have never liked the 9mm either. I guess the reason for me is it's boring. Generally 9mm and .38 Special use about the same powder charge but the 9mm burns at twice the pressure, and that's why it's louder. Much like comparing a 12 gauge shotgun with low pressure to a high pressure .30-06, similar power to some degree but that rifle is really loud.

bullet set back for semiautomatic pistols and rifles are easily to check for. all my semi auto ammunition i reload or rarely buy i put primer end under thumb between fingers, then between of outher hand and push the spit out of it against a hard surface. then check with pre set meaning tool .process time afew seconds. i would still do it shooting auto ammunition in revolvers. I've reloaded over 45years and auto ammunition because of variations in cases,bullets,chambers can and do cause bullet set back in auto pistols and rifles leading to most firearm blow ups. but say the different recoil of auto ammunition in a revolver can cause bullet pulling out of case mouth as you have shown. a big plus for those who don't reload is sometimes you buy factory ammunition and the stuf won't fit the chamber or stick.well shoot them in the revolver. plus i reload 355, 356,357 dia bullets in two of my for 9mm pistols i load. some 9mm pistols it works some it won't. but things are going to get much worse as far as reloading supplies and factory ammunition. so it least we have options. papa wishing you well. 😊

In the 1980s Federal developed a rimmed 9mm cartridge for a new Charter Arms revolver, but both died a rather quick death. One concern was that it might fit into old revolvers chambered for the much weaker 38 Colt (and presumably 38 S&W). I don't know if the bullet was roll crimped, but perhaps it should have been. I'd like to see the concept revived, but in a 2" revolver with a shortened frame and cylinder.

But my friend ended-up trading in the LCR 9mm because of bullet creep and the cylinder locking up on him. It's one thing for that to happen at a safe place like your local range, but quite another for that to happen when your life is at stake! I say stick with revolver rounds designed for use in revolvers, and semi auto rounds designed for semi autos. Nuff said.

@@Bozart123 Assuming exact same case mouth pressure on each projectile, the heavy weight bullet has more mass naturally, which causes it to resist movement. Newton's first law: An object at rest stays at rest unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. Given an identical recoil acceleration of the revolver cylinder backward, the heavier bullet will resist movement more than the lighter bullet, and overcome case mouth friction moreso than the lightweight bullet. To get away from this, you increase the weight of the revolver and it simply moves much less quickly and won't act like an inertia bullet-puller.

What I’ve gained from this information and all the other research I’ve done is that a 5 round .38 or .357 may be a little more beneficial for conceal carry because the cylinder isn’t so bulgy, and another thing I’ve noticed with all the different influencers I’ve watched is that nobody talks about decibel levels. Some people are really into the .44 and .357 magnums and the 5.56, but what will firing these different rounds do to our hearing when needing to use our firearms? I realize that mounting a suppressor can help with that, but suppressors are not exactly in everyone’s budget, and it’s definitely not practical to mount a suppressor on our EDC.
@GunSam

Those rounds will essentially do nothing to your hearing unless you actually blow your eardrum. My brother owns an audiology company, he's the president of his area for Miracle Ear, he's hung out with Patrick Duffy because he was a spokesman and all of that. What damages your ears is medium level sounds that go on for years and years, not a few short loud sounds. Like, let's say your lifetime hearing ability is at a 1,000.....(just a random number) and you shot 50 rounds of .357 Magnum on the range one day, no ear protection and your ears rang for 2 days....your hearing health will have dropped from like 1,000 to 999. Two things take your hearing, 1. - blowing the eardrum, and that only happens if your ear is a few inches away from the muzzle. 2. - having nonstop medium level sounds where you hear loudness for 8 hours a day for 25 years such as factory work. Short loud bursts, as long as the eardrum is not blown, do essentially nothing to your hearing. Also, adrenalin will take over and you won't notice that your gun is loud if you are firing in a life or death situation.

Since gel is not living tissue, I wonder if there is really any difference in so called "stopping power" at all between those two cartridges. This is kind of making me question my choice of carrying 357 Magnums. Maybe all that extra blast and recoil is not giving me any more real terminal performance at a practical level. Target Sports had some of the Winchester White box 110gr SJHP 357 Magnum in stock (Q4204). It's just over $51/50 not counting shipping.
