Is it better for blood sugar to walk before or after meals? Today, I will be testing whether there is a difference between exercising before eating or after eating on my blood sugar. Subscribe to my channel if you are interested in learning more about ways to control blood sugar!
A little bit about my blood sugar journey... I was told I was insulin resistant in 2017 after a glucose tolerance test my reproductive endocrinologist ordered for me when I was having trouble getting pregnant. And after conceiving, I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes very early on. Since then, I've been diligently learning about blood sugar dysregulation and gathering data through constant finger pricks and CGM experiments since I am now at greater risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes in the future. I've learned A LOT about what works and doesn't work for my body, and how my body responds to different foods. I hope this video helps you on your path to a healthier lifestyle!

I walk after every single one of my meals and it helps to bring down the number sometimes 10 points and sometimes 20 or 30 points depending on the duration of the walks. I walk between 45 minutes and up to one hour after my meals. I wear the Dexcom G7 so I monitor my blood sugar. I also walk before eating breakfast. My Fasting glucose is always high in the mornings so walking for one hour helps to bring my blood glucose number down so that I can then have breakfast. I eat two or three times a day. I walk even if I eat a small snack. I eat protein, low-carb veggies, and low-glycemic fruits (berries). I do not eat rice, bread, pasta and potatoes. This is how I keep my glucose readings between 80-100

I started having a weight gain when I turned 30 and I'm 72 now and have finally lost most of the weight. This weight gain came overnight (6 months) and at that time I was told not to eat any simple carbohydrates. I did that and it helped the situation a little bit, but not enough. It didn't matter how much I exercised (a whole lot) and eventually I became mildly diabetic and was offered metformin or figure it out. I chose to figure it out and stay off the meds. I eat whole foods and low carbohydrate (vegetables and certain fruit) is the key. I eat before any type of exercise, as to burn off the glucose I've just consumed, as it shortens the rise duration. I hope this helps to keep the spikes of glucose and insulin to a lower level and duration.

Thanks for sharing your story! I am with you on exercising after eating to keep glucose and insulin levels lower. I actually envision my body burning off the glucose and telling my body it doesn't need to produce as much insulin while I work out after eating! It motivates me to exercise harder :)

@@thegoodenoughmama type 2 diabetes isn't that you produce too much insulin, it's that the liver doesn't use it properly. There are a multitude of reasons for the dysfunction of the liver but healing the liver with diet and exercise seems to be the remedy for type 2 diabeaties.

Congratulations! Your pre meal numbers at low 80s are amazing. What's even more amazing is your ability to quickly stabilize your BG at the 2 hour mark in spite of a 62-point spike when you did the walk after. I imagine that your numbers would be even better eating your regular meals.👏👏👏

I admire your motivation to do all this experiments. I know in the end of the day is beneficial for you, however looking at some comments here is just ridiculous that some people treat you as alien that should be experimenting with sort of things. Please do the things that you things benefit yourself do not put in risk your health to please other people. You seems very conscious in how to stay healthy with your condition. I hope you stay that way and not tried to please people here.

I prevent my glucose spikes by doing a 15-30 minute indoor cycling (nothing crazy, just moderate pedaling) exercise beginning about 20-30 minutes after every meal. If I don't exercise, I noticed no matter what I eat for breakfast (salad or eggs), my glucose will jump from 90s-120s. At dinner though, they don't spike as much, and sometimes it will actually drop a little, one hour after my meal. In the past 5 years, I had an A1C of 7.0 twice.. A few tests at 5.6, A couple times at 5.8 ..A couple times at 6.0 A1C. After my 7.0 readings, my doctor wanted to put me on Metformin. I refused and told him I would try to bring it down with diet and exercise. It worked both times by bringing it down to 5.8, three months later for the next A1C blood test. I only started exercising after my meals 4 months ago. Prior to that, I was exercising usually before my meals usually twice a day.

Thanks for sticking yourself several times for our sake. I think this experiment is a good idea because there is a definite relationship between activity, exercise and blood 🩸 sugar levels. My blood 🩸 sugar levels were at the high side of pre-diabetic which prompted my doctor to pressure me to lose weight. As I did my blood 🩸 sugar level dropped accordingly. From my experiences folks with higher blood sugar levels may see a bigger difference in pre and post eating/walking numbers

Hi, have you seen the 3hr podcast with Peter Attia MD & Inigo San-Millan PhD? From memory: Intense workouts like your morning HIIT workout raises blood sugar afterwards. Low heart rate training (Zone 2, MAF Method), over time, increases the amount of mitochondria in your cells & improves their functioning, possibly reversing metabolic diseases like insulin resistance. The only unfortunate thing is that Inigo recommends 3-4hrs per week of zone 2 training to get the full benefit, which might be difficult to find the time. Anecdotally, I've been doing zone 2 training for 2+ months and I've noticed that I feel great for 2-3 hours afterwards, I'm not hungry at all, some fat loss while maintaining weight, better sleep and slightly lower resting heartrate. Peter also just released a book on living longer while feeling younger call Outlive. I'm not related to him or anything, just thought you might find it beneficial. Good luck on your journey!

I find I need to work out for 60 minutes to get an effective damper on my spike. Gratefully, an hour of exercise mid morning helps with spikes throughout the day. Still new to all this. Your videos are very helpful. Thank you.

My HIIT workouts are 4x4s at the end of a zone 2,..I couldn’t do an hour of HIIT! 60 minute weightlifting sessions also works. And sometimes it is just low and slow zone 2.

Of course on day 2 the response was much better. This is due to the fact that the body prioritises the use of glucose present on the blood first. You started using some of it immediately after the walking energy requirement. Less glucose to store/convert.

Hopefully it will be even better next month when I get it checked again.

In regards to breakfast, I read that usually people's bodies are more insulin resistant in the morning so it makes sense that your blood sugar would jump up higher after breakfast. It sounds like you're doing a great job of managing your blood sugar though! 5.7 is great!

That spike sounds like mine! I could be at 80-90 then after a carb ridden meal… something like small veggie and noodles or a plain waffle , it will be 150 or 170.. after two hours it will be 130-140 and three hours it may be at 100…

Please help to understand - if after you eat and complete digestion, it is not a good sign if your blood glucose falls BELOW your fasting (wakeup) levels? It means that you over-produced insulin causing for the eventul severe drop, yeah? And it will also cause extreme hunger, yeah? Ideally it should approach the fasting level? If so, how quickly? 1 hour, 2 hour,s 3 hours? Thanks. I am learning a lot.

Nevermind - I saw that my question was mostly answered in a previous comment. Yes while it is good for your blood glucose to come back down, in your case, it OVERSHOT the fasting level by quite a bit (90-100 down to 71). Thanks. I am learning a lot to be more healthy.

Yes, you're right. My understanding is that if your blood sugar drops below your baseline, chances are your insulin response overshot. I don't think a 5-10 drop is a big deal but if my blood sugar dropped like 15 points or more, I'd take that to indicate that the food I ate is not great for my blood sugar. In terms of how fast your blood sugar should return to baseline seems to be up for debate. I personally stick to 2 hours post as ideal, but there are many people, dieticians included, who think that is too strict. Standard medical advice says your blood sugar should be below 140 after 2 hours, but that is too high for me personally. Hope that helps!

Ive just come across your channel and I love it ! I’m 21 and I was diagnosed with insulin resistance at 20, pretty sure I’ve had it since I was 15-16 because I had all the symptoms of low blood sugar. I also have PCOS, which is caused by my insulin resistance. I am on metformin and I am doing my best to eat healthy, I’ve eaten healthy for the past 4 years, but not really in my teens but I was pretty active, maybe that’s where it went wrong, I’m not overweight and I am pretty lean, so my doctor thinks it’s genetics? But idk tho. So I noticed that on a lower carb diet I do feel a LOT better and get less hungry, and the metformin will work better too from what I read online because I did do a little research, I really don’t want to develop diabetes. It’s pretty hard to stick to a diet because it feels unfair that at my age all of my friends can eat anything they want without consequences and I can’t:( Your videos are really helpful and informative, of course everyone’s body reacts differently but it’s still good to see how they affect other people. So I wanted to ask if you are also taking metformin or some other medication ? Because you do a lot of experiments and I was just really curious about that 😆

How wonderful that your doctor is seeing your insulin resistance so young! 30 years ago, I had signs of metabolic syndrome... particularly belly fat and high blood pressure. It was blamed on genetics (my Dad had the same issues). Doctors didn't connect those with insulin resistance back then. Take care of it now so you don't end up like me, in my 50s and dealing with it still

Does exercise (fasting) make your blood sugar go up? Mine goes up 25 points after a 30 minute brisk walk. Been testing it for 3 months everyday and it’s always the same increase.

No, I haven't found that to be the case for my blood sugar but I hear that it isn't uncommon. Your body may be releasing stored glucose to fuel your workout in the fasting state. Did you find out how long it takes for your blood sugar to come back down after that 25 point increase?

I do better walking / exercising before meals. After meals I tend to crash and I get weak and dizzy and I don’t want that happening when I exert myself. Editing to add I eat the same breakfast every day. Oikos triple zero protein yogurt, 3 eggs, 3 strips of bacon and a cup of half caff coffee with cream no sugar. I crash no matter what I eat but I definitely crash worse if I eat something like waffles / pancakes / donut.

Thanks so much for the suggestion! Unfortunately, coffee does not sit well with my stomach 😕 But off the bat, I'd think that both options of black coffee with MCT and with mushroom powder would have minimal impact on your blood sugar so they sound like good choices!

FYI, coffee with a little half and half (no sugar) will raise my glucose about 10 points after an hour. Coffee with Stevia (with erythritol) will do the same (10 points). I no longer use it because of the recent blood clot warnings. Coffee with Splenda (sucralose and Maltodextrin) will spike my glucose levels just like sugar (about 30 points). The word is; Maltodextrin which is used in many artificial sweeteners including some Stevia, will spike just like sugar, which correlates with my test.

@@FolasadeXO Walmart has Relion for like $9. And 50 strips are around $9. It's pretty accurate, but it reads 5-10 points high at times from my experience. So an actual 92 mgdl may read 100 mgdl. It still gives you an idea on how and which foods are effected upon you.

Great experiment! - I would be interested to see how the resjlts would change with meals that had different macros. The waffles had high carbs and low protein. What about high protein and low carbs, or high fat?

Thanks for the suggestion! I purposefully chose a high carb meal so I could see how effective exercise before or after would be in bringing high blood sugar down. With high protein and low carb, my guess is that my blood sugar wouldn't rise as much so I wouldn't fully be able to see much of an impact on my blood sugar.

This is great info :) i was wondering if I would get the same results if after eating my meal and after doing a light exercise (like walking) I do some moderate exercise? Or would that be counter productive?

Hello! I don't think that would be counter productive at all! My experience has been the more movement and exercise, the better (unless you are really overdoing it)

Saw just a few of your videos about exercise and blood sugar response. What you fail to mention is the time and duration of the walk, and your activities after the meals. If you were to mention all that, interpretation would become more scientific. That makes a big difference. My observations: A walk half an hour after the start of a meal blunts the peak very effectively. If you start the walk a little later then the peak would already have been achieved, and then the walk is only going to have an impact on the down ward slope of the graph and hence the normalisation of the curve in 2 hours rather than 3 hours. Your normal household chores after the meal are equivalent to a walk and also have a big impact on the blood sugar levels. May be you are taking care of all these confounding factors, but at least, they are not being mentioned.

I mention that I define walking as brisk walking for 20 minutes. And yes, there are definitely a lot of confounding variables that I can't fully control outside of a lab environment. Thanks for the feedback and for sharing your observations about when to walk after meals!

You should do a test to see if faking Ceylon cinnamon before a meal would keep it from spiking as high… I hear great things. I took it before my oatmeal and it only went up to 117 from 94… the few days prior sane ost meal sent me to 134. It’s got other ingredients including added sugar. But I can’t swear it’s why but maybe you could do a real test to see s🤷🏻‍♀️ I love these tests because I randomly spike… not regularly as high as u but I did binge in my recent bday and hit my highest spike of 164…. By 3 hours it went back to 117 so I stopped checking after that.

That's interesting, I haven't heard that rumor! Many people in the intermittent fasting space say that you can drink coffee black during your fast. Maybe people are talking about coffee with creamer and other things added into it??

What would've been even more interesting is taking you glucose level before the walk on the first day to see how much the walk affected the glucose level prior to eating. Then on a 3rd day not do any exercise, so we could see how the exercise helped the 1st hour.

I haven't done the soleus pushup but I've researched it. I can't wrap my head around why it would be more effective than doing other types of exercise. Have you tried it?? And if so, what has been your result? Thanks for watching!

​@thegoodenoughmama apparently the calf muscles are really good at burning glucose... or something like that. I've added this in when I'm sitting for awhile, don't know if it helps... hard to test so often when you do finger pricks ($75 for 100 strips!)

Hmm no I haven’t, but my guess would be that it would be worse to have dessert before a meal since there is no fat or protein in your body to slow down the absorption of glucose.

I love your videos, your so brave and I am learning so much, but I don’t understand why the number goes down to 71, as most of us, would think, “oh that’s good”! So am I correct in saying the number shouldn’t drop below the pre meal number? Also, one other thing Im not understanding is, if your blood sugar is good to begin off with, how are you still Categorized as a PD?

I think your blood sugar number dropping below the pre-meal number is generally okay. But I know that for me, my numbers usually stay within the 90's low 100's when my body has digested all my food. So the fact that my number is 71 indicates to me that my insulin response overshot and produced way more insulin than was necessary (which worsens insulin resistance) and my blood sugar dropped. @@thegoodenoughmama thanks for taking the time to respond, I seemed to have miss it until tonight. I’m trying my ACV before bed tonight, and will see what my fasting is doing. I’ve been working diligently on moving my body by taking 4 brisk 10 minute walks per day. I have chronic pain, so walking and swimming are all I can do, oh, and resistance bands. In 2 months, I’ve got my average fasting below 110, it was as high as 122. Definitely can’t do rice, not even brown, so that’s out as well as white bread, potato and pasta, sweets, which I honestly don’t even miss. Love your vids ❤

I walked right after the meal. And I ate exactly what I showed you in the video. I wanted to reduce confounding variables like protein so I could see strictly what the walk did for my blood sugar and nothing else.

Walking normally for 5 minutes after eating can make a big difference. Jogging requires 2 hrs tho for digestion

Okay this just shows that being “too healthy “ compromises our adaptation. You only ate waffles and felt all that spikes. I think part of being emotionally and physically healthy is to experience all food available to us now (food evolution) and learn to balance it

I disagree blood sugar of 71 is not a bad number´ as you said it. I’ll be happy if my blood sugar stay between 50-60, this happens only if I fasted or did one meal a day. Otherwise, it’s in the 80‘s.

I think 71 is a good number as well. I think 71 may not indicate a positive result if your baseline is higher and you drop under your baseline because it might mean your insulin is overshooting.

@@Detvanliga I tried adding whey protein into my green shakes years ago and if my memory serves me correctly, I'm pretty sure it didn't spike my blood sugar, though I didn't check my blood sugar too precisely. I don't eat whey protein anymore but I do sometimes add collagen peptides to my food, so I can re-test that! Might be similar to whey protein.

I sure wish you’d walk long than 20 mins. More like 60 to 90 mins. A 20 minute walk, for someone who does HIT training, is not sufficient enough for someone as in shape as you. You barely broke a sweat. 😓 I still enjoy your other videos.

And staying away from processed food. It's so weird to have a tablespoon of peanut butter before a piece of fruit to stop the spike. It works though i think. Fasting blood sugar is when u haven’t eaten yet for at least 10 hours. You have to get out of bed to go to the drs office and they call it fasting. Just adding that cause it’s just that you haven’t eaten for a certain amount of hours.
