Does the Order of How You Eat Your Food Impact Your Blood Sugar? | A Blood Sugar Test Experiment

Does the order of how you eat your food impact your blood sugar? I've heard before that we should eat protein or fat first before eating carbs for good blood sugar versus eating the protein, fat, and carbs all together. This is a blood sugar hack that many people use. Well, in another blood sugar experiment, I will try to answer the question that we are all dying to know: does the order of how we eat our food really impact our blood sugar? And if we eat our protein and fat first before our carbs, will we have more balanced blood sugar? I hope we can all add another blood sugar tip and blood sugar hack to our repertoire!
A little bit about my blood sugar journey... I was told I was insulin resistant in 2017 after a glucose tolerance test my reproductive endocrinologist ordered for me when I was having trouble getting pregnant. And after conceiving, I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes very early on. Since then, I've been diligently learning about blood sugar dysregulation and gathering data through constant finger pricks and CGM experiments since I am now at greater risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes in the future. I've learned A LOT about what works and doesn't work for my body, and how my body responds to different foods. I hope this video helps you on your path to a healthier lifestyle! Of course food impacts our blood glucose. My fasting morning blood sugar use to be 200 😮 I stoped eating simple carbohydrates (bread, crackers, cookies etc) and make sure I have 2 different protein foods and high fiber at every meal. My annual checkup with my MD blood test showed am not diabetic anymore…. But that means I have to stick to my diet and keep walking 2-5 miles a day. If I want a “treat” I just eat it early in the day and before I take my walk. I also find doing a massive clean&organize my house works too 😂

Thanks for the video. I figured out much the same in my own experiments: protein and fat first, then veggies, then carbs makes a massive difference. Just fyi I found that a 20 minute brisk walk drops me 50+ points, along with stopping any rising trend, while a 40 minute weight lifting session drops me 150-250+ points and stalls any rise for between 4 hours and 24 hours! The intense workout is sometimes too effective and I'll have to drink some juice to keep a level 100ish. Note: if I'm emotionally stressed, these workouts will raise my blood glucose, which is awful--no longer a hormetic stress, but just stress stress

Yes, I noticed the same response with any form of stressor, the fight or flight response triggers glucose release and higher levels. Personally, don't eat the bagel (bread, rice, pasta etc) just stick to vegetables and protein. Nuts and seeds are great too and keep those sugar levels in check!

@@thegoodenoughmama well first of all for some reason I never trust my CGM (Freestyle Libre) I always suggest to a family member with Type II do a finger stick first before taking any fast acting insulin. Do not always trust the CGM. Sometimes (a lot of times for me) there can be a difference of 20-30 higher on the Libre compared to the finger stick. AFTER a workout sometimes my CGM would say 57!?! no way then I do a finger stick and it's 89 I had my GP prescribe me a glucose monitor so I could periodically check when I think it will spike higher than 140. I try to add some type of fiber anytime I consume a carb. Protein, fat & fiber is my routine. If I indulge in fruit other than berries I make sure to take a 30 min walk or elliptical and it helps keep my glucose at acceptable levels. I've had the chia before and after a meal but have not tested that as well as you have on your videos. Oh and Ground chia seeds usually help to keep my glucose from spiking. PLUS A LOT of non starchy vegetables. I usually have 1/2 my plate full of veggies, quarter protein, fat/+very minimal starch.

(Well I'm vegan now since it helped me lose my last 10 lbs.)I also bake almond flour cookies or mug cakes using swerve for my type II diabetic 82 year old mother in law. I helped her lose 100 pounds and got her off of insulin 3 X's a day. She finally made the happy mistake of forgetting her insulin on a trip away from home. Hello, Thanks for the video. I think everyone should know their bodies & understand what their bodies needs. As I'm pre diabetic, i always trying to finding ways to improve my health. In my case interment fasting helped me a lot with my condition, this following a nutritional meals, the capacity to change old habits and low impact exercises. For us who developed insulin resistance, Nutrition is the most important part of balance our glucose level. But also we need to combine nutrition with a lifestyle that can bring us health & peace. Stress is always going to a big factor when our sugar goes up. Stress helped the Cortisol hormone interfere with a healthy body response to any treatment. That is why is important to try to include relaxation or meditation into our lifestyle. Something that make us relaxed like a message or a nice bath. Is a combination of things that help our body gets healthy. We the Western world is accustomed to easy ways to fixed things, but is not an easy way find ways to improve our health. We need to follow a good nutrition, exercise in a way you can, manage our stress levels & sleep well. I stopped eating sugar & most starchy food since I was diagnosed with pre diabetes. Since then I incorporated low impact exercises to my daily routine, I included meditation & yoga. I'm trying to get my 8 hours sleep because I usually have only 5 and that doesn't help my stress get down because my cortisol levels goes up. But I'm improving a lot. I managed to loose 15 pounds. My sugar level keep around 110 to 120. So yes, step by step & trying to keep motivated & healthy.

Thanks for the feedback! I totally agree with everything you mentioned. In my pasta video, my blood sugar spiked like crazy after stress from coming off of an interview so I definitely have experienced what you wrote about stress in real life. And research shows that a bad night's sleep makes your body more insulin resistant the next day so sleep is definitely important. So many factors we have to address holistically to better our health :) Sounds like you're doing a great job.

thank you, always good to see real life. the experiment was a little flawed. Only protein is told to lower the spike. Fat on the other hand, also prolongs digestion. The area under the curve remains the same. such the sushi experiment would have been better. Anyway, the values clearly show what others also report. I don't know whether you ever tried lemon taking with carbs. Including small small cut peel. It has a triple effect: amylase from saliva gets inactivated in the stomach, resorption of glucose is diminished, and glut4 receptors in muscles get higher exposure. I take half a lemon and re-add the pulp to the juice, or work the whole content out with fingers.
@thegoodenoughmama

I read mixed things on fat. I see a lot of dieticians recommending fat with carbs (ie. nut butter) to blunt the blood sugar spike, which I have experienced to be true in my own data gathering. But when I eat fats like high fat meat and cheese, my blood sugar stays elevated longer. I haven't ever tried taking lemon with carbs. My teeth are sensitive so I don't know how well that would fair for me. But I do love lemon and when I was pregnant, craved and ate them everyday, peel and all!
@monnoo8221
@monnoo8221 Год назад
@@thegoodenoughmama you need not take it undiluted! 1 lemon on 10..12 ounces is manageable, in case of lemon and for that purpose, it is not the peak acidity, but the mass of citrate you would take in Regarding fat I think it is important to distinguish saturated (meat, cheese) from unsaturated, and whether it contains omega3. Avocado, olive oil and sardines are staples meanwhile for me The effect you observe with saturated fat is completely inline with expectations. In fact hi sat fat and high simple carbs should be avoided. I also cancelled but butter, because the omega 6 fats are not stable. And oxidised they are simply poisonous. Stay healthy and thanks again for sharing

Jessie Inchauspé the French biochemist, known as the Glucose Goddess, says you should eat Fibre first in the form of vegetables or salad, then Protein and Fats, then last Starches & Sugars. See her video 10 life-changing glucose hacks on her Glucose Revolution RU-vid channel. She has graphs showing how effective this is, and there is a link in the video description to download a pdf of the glucose hacks. It would be good if you could test the veggie starter/Fibre first, then fat and protein, then starches last hack, but with healthier food that you are likely to want to include in your diet. The trouble is that veggies and salad are much nicer with protein.

I was wondering how this same bagels will affect non diabetic person ? They always get under 140 after 2 hours ? My doctor said its normally under 140 but it could be higher depend on the food
@thegoodenoughmama
@thegoodenoughmama Год назад
Based on my research, it is not impossible for a non-diabetic person's blood sugar to be at 140 2 hours postprandial after a high carb meal. But I think maybe it's rare? When my sister had normal metabolic functioning (not sure if she still does), she ate a bag of dried mangos and her blood sugar was over 140, though I can't remember clearly if it was 2 hours post. In the future, I want to do videos comparing my blood sugar to someone else who has healthy metabolic functioning!

Here are my 2-cents, ignore it if you disagree. 1. You may not have insulin resistance unless verified by insulin tests before and after meal. Also, insulin resistance very often occurs in overweight people and very rarely occurs in normal or underweight people. You might had/have insulin deficiency, of which your body is pumping insulin too slow and too little after eating. And this is usually represented by having a fast blood glucose rise especially after eating simple carbs but coming down relatively quickly. People with insulin resistance would normally have a fast rise and a slow drop. 2. Eating carbs first would have a bigger spike and a relatively fast dropping. While eating protein and fat first would have a relatively smoother spike but stay higher for longer period of time. In the end the A1C would be similar but eating protein and fat first is still better because big spikes do more damage to your body.
@thegoodenoughmama

@paulhart3812

My guess is it would be to best to have a small bit of protein/fat just before the meal because eating the protein/fat with the carb at the same time initially would spike blood glucose because the carbs are absorbed first. And never eat the carb alone. Conclusion… always have a small bit of protein/fat first… then have your full meal including both protein/fat and carbs.

@The Good Enough Mama, I have previously posted a comment directed at you in another video about how quickly squatting can very quickly bring your blood sugar level down to a safer level. If you want to bring your 175mg/dL blood sugar level down to the 90s or 80s, just do a 3 or 4 sets of 30 or 40 squats each at 15-minute or 20-minute intervals and you horrifying 175mg/dL will crash down to the safe level of 80s or 90s. Give it a try the next time you see your blood sugar level spike like in this experiment.

I was wondering if that was a whole grain bagel or a refined flour bagel (looked like a white flour one). I am wondering what would be the sugar spike in case of a whole grain bagel. I would assume, there would be a significant difference in sugar spike, and would expect it to be better than eating a white flour bagel with some other high fiber food, since in the whole grain bagel case, it is difficult to separate fiber from carbs during digestion and thus its absorption is slow.

wrong, as so many. First, proteins are converted to sugars, second, proteins can not be used for energy, third high protein causes cancer in the long run, and hyper methylation of DNA. Also 5% carb is too little, you cause the body to forget about how to handle carbs, which is kind of an insulin resistance. 20..30% carbs, 0.8g protein per kg body weight, the rest with healthy oils. If you have good discipline, you also can go to 40%, but not regularly. Metabolic flexibility is key,

*THIS IS THE WAY I UNDERSTAND IT, CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG.* For more than 200,000 generations humanoids were hyper carnivores and apex predators. They evolved with a stomach PH of 2 (highly acidic), eyes facing forward in the skull like all carnivores, and sharp, pointy canine teeth. They became so proficient at killing they drove most large land mammals like the Mastodon and Wolly Mammoth into extinction about 12,000 years ago. It was only after this happened that humans ever ate a vegetable to keep from starving to death. Humans began farming about 600 generations ago. Processed foods have only been around for 20 generations, and vegetable oils have only been around for 10 generations. For 3 million years humans never ate carbohydrates at all except a few berries in the Spring and Fall. 300,000 years ago there was 9 species of humanoids living on Earth. 30,000 years ago there were only 3. In order to determine the proper human diet one must figure out what man has eaten for his entire existence, and fatty red meat was a large part of it. Maybe in another 10,000 generations humans will evolve to utilize carbohydrates, processed foods, and vegetable oils but right now they can't.

i just came up with a new hack: a glass of water with * 1 table spoon of organic apple cider vinegar * 1 tea spoon of glutamine powder in the morning directly after getting up and at the evening before going to bed. if it is too acidic before going to bed, add half a teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate. this drink is designed to heal the l-cells in your gut with glutamine and boosts the output of natural GLP-1 from your L-cells with the SCFAs in the vinegar which reduces your blood sugar (by downregulating glucagon which downregulates gluconeogenesis) you have to try this at least three days to heal part of your l-cells. i probably don't need to mention it but don't buy a f****d up sugar sauce that claims to be vinegar. real organic vinegar has almost zero carbs.
