Blood Sugar Experiment - Fruits Bad for Blood Sugar?

I'm back with another blood sugar experiment! I want to know for myself: which fruit is bad for blood sugar? Which fruit is best for blood sugar? Which fruit can I eat with pre diabetes and insulin resistance? Let's go!
A little bit about my blood sugar journey... I was told I was insulin resistant in 2017 after a glucose tolerance test my reproductive endocrinologist ordered for me when I was having trouble getting pregnant. And after conceiving, I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes very early on. Since then, I've been diligently learning about blood sugar dysregulation and gathering data through constant finger pricks and CGM experiments since I am now at greater risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes in the future. I've learned A LOT about what works and doesn't work for my body, and how my body responds to different foods. I hope this video helps you on your path to a healthier lifestyle!

Would love to see you do a comparison of your blood sugar on resistant starch. Medical experts say that after starch in potatoes and rice are cooked then refrigerated overnight then reheated the starch becomes resistant to digestion and more like fiber so does not raise blood sugar as much. Would love to see you put it to the test!

All diabetics need to do this to find out what and HOW MUCH of any given food, will spike (or not) your glucose.
@poopoo09
@poopoo09 2 месяца назад
No diabetic doesnt need to do this. Reason for glucose spike because of insulin resistance. If diabetics walk more exercise more and do physical activities in the gym will help the insulin get the glucose into the cells instead of being resisted and having it go on a vacation in your blood

A well balanced meal with protein, fiber, and good fats will stabilize your blood sugar. Most importantly Have protein before your meals. I usually have a 1/2 fairlife nutrition drink-chocolate-2 carbs. Or ISO protein shake-2carbs. Or you can eat your protein of your meal first. Example. I ate my steak first then ate an entire pound of strawberries. CGM 76 highest peak after meal 85. Verified with finger prick. One of my favorite meals- 2 cups Greek yogurt, 2 cups thawed blueberries, 30 grams of walnuts. Glucose 72, peaked at 81. I eat tons of fruit-my favorite. I reversed my type 2 diabetes by utilizing protein, fiber, and fats appropriately. Good luck with your trials. I’m sure this would work if you want to have a piece of cake at a party. I haven’t tried. I don’t crave junk foods. Have a protein drink first(no carb, or low carb)😊

Great experiment! I did calorie restriction for 18 months and during that period I learned to remove bananas from my diet due to their high calories. I ate one small apple of about 80 calories per day. Then I learned to switch to blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries because they offer antioxidants and low sugar. Now I eat bananas on the weekends just to enjoy them, but I don't eat them everyday.

Nice experiment! i have done it myself as a former pre diabetic, I have to make sure that what I eat makes sense to my metabolism only. However, It can be a learning experience for everyone. I also can eat the occasional sm apple, and small fruits in sensible portion. I grew up eating lots of bananas and tropical fruits, that were contributing to my problem mainly because I was skipping meals and replaced with 2 or 3 bananas, in the name of work. I been avoiding them for a while, but since my learning curb is still going, after experimenting different ways I found that I can eat the 1 sm banana occasionally and if I add some fat and protein, like in your experiment it will not spike me too much. I prefer to limit high glycemic foods, but I am not eliminating completely. Besides, I have also increased my physical activity, which helps to keep my insulin sensitivity in check. Thanks and take care.

A continuous glucose monitor would show you what you may have missed before, after and between measurements. Sometimes, the spikes are quick and go away quickly, which is fine. Sometimes the spike is delayed. Exercise immediately after can help drive the glucose into your muscles. Hence, walking after a meal is good for that and other reasons. Milk likely prompted an insulin response which may have lowered your blood sugar, but yes, blueberries are very moderate.

I think the results reflect mostly your overall good metabolic health. BTW a glucose reading of 95 and then 99 could just be variability of the meter. Try doing two tests right away. You'll see that you can easily see at least a 5 point swing between tests taken right after each other. The meters aren't always super accurate. Also, an hour after eating the fruit is time enough for the insulin response in your system to have lowered your blood sugar naturally. I'd be much more interested to see what happens in a shorter time frame.

Like you, I want to figure out a moderate way to live a lower carb lifestyle. I recently started using a CGM monitor and have learned that half servings of certain fruits like mango and large apples seem to be ok, and small apples and oranges are safe. Funny thing, to date I’ve shied away from bananas 😮 It’s interesting how we have so much fear about bananas, and rightly so based on your research. I think I will try half of one with nut butter for an experiment! It was nice to see that some of the rules we follow, like blueberries and bananas are rooted in truth! Thank you for sharing your family and for being a human pincushion for us 😂❤ Hope the remodel went well 😀Be blessed!

I can eat half an apple without triggering my sugar go too high. Blueberries are safe for me as long as I don't overdo it. Banana on the other hand I can't eat at all. Even pairing it with high protein and fats. Wake up sugar 98 ate a medium sized banana and my sugar jumped to 286. Tried eating half of a small banana result were better but still too high, 247. After trying out many different experiments, I ended up deciding to stay far away from banana. Thank you for sharing!

Apples and blueberries are my safe fruits. I hope to advance to cantaloupe this summer. I eat my apple chopped up in my breakfast salad*. Im trying to keep some banana in my rotation for serotonin and colon. They can be appetite triggering so i have to be careful. But i can eat 2-3 apples and 2-3 C frozen blueberries within a day as long as i have lots of greens and cruciferous veggies. Also intermittent fasting & strength training treat me very well. Usually 14-18 hours. Once a week i do a longer 20-22hr fast. Having more muscle on my body has greatly helped handle glucose well. *Breakfast Salad: Fine chop - cabbage, celery, bell pepper, 1 apple, radish, jicama, baby kale, romaine, ground fennel, celery seed, fairchilds ACV, dash stevia, dash salt

Doesn't fructose, sugar from fuit, go directly to the liver? And blood sugar tests for glucose?
@es2709
@es2709 6 месяцев назад
Fructose is converted to glucose by the small intestine and liver...so testing for blood glucose will account for the fructose ingested.
@Chef_Alpo
@Chef_Alpo 2 месяца назад
I think what you're saying only applies to direct fructose without the aid of fiber, so high fructose corn syrup and fruit juices. A huge issue with eating processed foods is that your body doesn't have to break them down nearly as much (or at all) to get to the caloric value.

Interesting results. I'm the opposite! I have been eating an apple a day for the last 10 years (an apple a day keeps the doctor away) and I always eat it with peanut butter, I just love the taste of them together. I started using a CGM recently, and I noticed when I have an apple with peanut butter it spikes my glucose to 160!!! Worse than brown rice! Blueberries still spikes a little but not as bad as apple, about 135. When I have banana, it's about the same as a handful of blueberries..... And like you, I thought banana was the demon and apple is better. I guess everyone's body is different, need to find the right fruit for our own body.

The real 'impact' is on your hormone levels, to include insulin levels. Blood sugar isn't going to be much of an issue for a healthy person with a well functioning pancreas/beta cells. Eating carbs changes your hormone profile, which changes your cravings, your fat storage, etc etc. Let's say 10 years ago, you ate a banana and the blood sugar spike was the same, BUT, 10 year ago it only took 5 units of insulin for you to metabolize the carbs in the banana. Today, maybe it take 10 units to do the same thing. Even though the blood sugar wasn't different, the effect on you will be vastly different. Just some things to think about.
