30 Base stats. In everything. Worst in the game. And that's the only Pokemon we're going to be using. Fun times. I stream at twitch.tv/Jrose11 Edited by: SimplyAJ ( / simplyaj )
i didn't notice how long this video was until i saw the comment and realized I'm an hour and 10 minutes in X) but yeah i thought the exact same! there were _soooo_ many alternatives, I just couldn't believe it!
I looked at slugmas moveset and the only good non fire moves it gets are rockslide, return and body slam. But slugmas only stat above 40 is special attack. Emerald is probably impossible without double team strats although ruby or sapphire might be possible.
I always like to think how the crobat feels in these situations, talking to the mightyena after the fight. "yeah I can't believe how hard this sunkern hit me with secret power, I can't see how that can happen. Wait YOU BOOSTED HIS ATTACK HOW MANY TIMES???"
@@KainaX122 "With that kind of strategy, you want us to lose! Do you really want to let those water hippies and their fat wailord take over? Ok, then start using crunch and stop turning random sunkerns into salamences!
imagine being one of these gym leaders you're just completely obligated through your employment to deal with this schizo barging in hundreds of times with his singular sunkern until he eventually makes a joke of you and wins through a series of miraculous flukes
Later Their serperiors(Gen 5 introduced but Gen 6 contrarian grass type nope rope aka snek joke intended.): Wtf? How did that fricking happen? The gym leader: Got Arceus(joke intended) awful luck. I think hitting moves like Horn drill is more likely. Series of flukes and me getting overconfident. The serpereriors: understandable.
Battle Tower in a nutshell. You fight through hordes of trainers and get a really long streak until some punk gets an insane stroke of luck that ends your streak.
So in Gen2 I believe Mirror move will copy almost any move your opponent last used (Like in the Gen2 minimum battles run Blue's Pidgeot mirrors Kenya's curse and got a sweep) This got changed in Gen3. The logic is that Mirror move's concept is actually to reflect (pun intended) whatever move you got hit last and use your opponent's moves to hit back. In other words, Mirror move can only work on moves that you got targeted on. Growth is a self-target move, you do not "Growth" your opponent, you growth yourself. Therefore it will not be Mirror Moved starting in Gen3. Attract is a move that targets the opponent, so you can mirror move attract.
That’s exactly how it works. Mirror Move can never copy a status move that targets the user, be it a boosting move, a healing move or something wacky like Substitute or Destiny Bond, but it can copy status moves that target the opponent like Attract.
from bulbapedia: "Mirror Move will fail if no moves were targeted at the user" so I guess because Growth wasn't being used at Swablu, Mirror Move failed
yup, Growth only affects the user, and has no target. So since Swablu wasn't the target of Growth, because Growth only targets the user, then Mirror Move failed.
I fondly remember a time watching my brother playing Pokemon showdown. He came across an opponent named "Sunkern Man". His team was a single level 100 Sunkern. I remember that national hero today. You have embodied his spirit well.
It's awesome to have a series like Jrose's which is, respectfully, anti-hardcore. The pokemon runs nowadays seem to be moving more and more towards hardcore rulesets and difficult romhacks, so runs like this where you're not doing calcs, showing yourself changing plans, and struggling a lot is nice and chill to have
Someone's probably already pointed this out, but you can get two TM's for Return. If you get the Meteorite after beating Maxie 1 and give it to the scientist in Fallarbor town, he'll give you a Return TM. The other more well known Return TM is the one you get from the old man in Pacifidlog town.
Hey jrose, there's actually a very quick way to level up in Emerald, while the vs seeker doesn't exist you can rebattle trainers using the pokenav. How it works is that for the trainers you have registered in your pokenav, each of them might want to rebattle you when you enter their route. If you just go in and out of their route very quickly, you can rebattle them a lot and level up very quickly. I recommend route 117, pretty sure that's the fastest
I usually battle the interviewers with Magneton and Exploud to gain experience. Not sure if @jrose would consider that using another pokemon since u need two to initiate the battle
Sunflora really deserved a mega evolution or a third evolution. It’s another one of those sad Pokémon where it sucks in the game but it’s so cute you want to use it. I remember watching that contest episode of the anime so many times on my VHS, and it was my moms favourite Pokémon. Funny childhood memories.
Idk... sunflora actually has a decent movepool and a not unserviceable special attack. Certainly has some potential use especially now with terastalizing.
I think that's the reason why we're playing Emerald here instead of Ruby or Sapphire. I... don't think Steven would be doable. You can't set up on Skarmory because Toxic and you only get one chance to bypass it. And then there's also Metagross; which resists or is immune to literally every move Sunkern can learn, and I don't see Sunkern taking Meteor Mash very well. Hidden Power Fire might be a requirement to make Steven possible. Let's put it this way; there's a reason why JRose didn't fight postgame Steven. Because that's Champion Steven with higher levels; and that Skarmory would make things even less possible.
@@raikaria3090 In Ruby or Sapphire it might become possible just by being level 100, although he got close to that already to beat Drake. In Emerald since it's postgame with much higher levels I don't actually think it would be possible, but sometimes Jrose manages to do runs that I think are impossible.
@@scoobiusmaximus9508 No, in Ruby and Sapphire it's not posible. There is literally 0 chances of Sunkern defeating R/S Steven, even at lvl 100. You don't seem to understand how type effectiveness works. You won't even get past Skarmory, even with a Full Ivs Modest 252Sp.Attack Sunkern. You have an Sp.attack of 200? Well, your STAB grass attacks are basically hitting said Skarmory with an Sp.Attack of 50.
Sunkern is the weakest pokemon... that have something that resembles a movepool. Sure, there are weaker mons, but they all have 1-2 damaging moves at best and that's it. And that's why I believe Sunkern is more interesting to watch, because it has some level of variation in strats, while still being very weak.
@@dograttargod I mean, Caterpie's only two moves until gen4 were tackle and string shot. Take Down is better than those. Beldum also has better stats and typing too. Gen 5+ starts giving Caterpie SOME options, and I don't know about other modern pokemon.
@@SquallLionhart409 Babei pusdeo legends like Beldum(Final form is a metagross), Larvitar(final form is tyranitar), and and bagon(final form is a salamence) are supposed to be weak. That’s why these Pokémon have stats that compare to legendaries to make up for the pain without something like Slaking(which is technically a pusdeo legend) being ruined by the god awful truant(the Pokémon with this ability waste every second turn their own doing jack flummery. Also who the frick put a censor on this account?) ability. Yes Durant can make the ability work with entrainment to give it to opponents and enable some farther funny strats but it was meant to be an ability that illuminate(All it does is increase wolf pokemon encounter rate) has more useage than in competitive Pokémon battles.
I know you're much more familiar with Gen 1 and this isn't meant to be some 'optimised' run, but Brawly's Meditite's only attacking move is Focus Punch (its other moves are Bulk Up and dual screens). So yes, Bullet Seed is always safe, but you could have also used Brawly's potion turn to set up Ingrain or an additional Growth.
Sunkern is unironically one of my favorite grass pokemon, I wish it wasn't such a bad pokemon and that sunflora actually was stronger or at least was a grass/fire type or evolved into one. That would make that line so unique and cool
oh no....... it would have no counters.. thats why .. cause fire would keep it from being super effected and grass would keep water from being super effective...
Glad to see all these impossible challenges over the last couple of months! The Red/Blue Solo runs are great, but it’s nice to have some more unique ones to balance it out.
So, I played Emerald before I played GSC, so when I found a Sunkern in the Safari Zone extension of the post game, I was fascinated. I kept leveling it and leveling it, all the way to level 70. Then, after farming sun stones for a Bellossom and having this Sunkern in the party, I saw that it could evolve. Lemme just say that 12 year old me was very disappointed.
@@rojopantalones9791 Wrong. It can one shot normal Groudon, not the Fire type Primal form. Which isn't a feat considering any non-grass Pokémon with Grass Knot can one shot Groudon with Grass Knot too, without being an useless Pokémon like Sunflora is.
A 29 year old majoring in neuroscience, struggling with his education while balancing his acting profession, sits playing Pokemon Crystal while relaxing with the Man Jrose when he says "I don't want to level up past my problems"..... I felt that
Sometimes I just love Jroses optimisme. Oh, mega drain made a little dent in the feathers of this insane flying dragon that blast my sunkern into oblivion and wipes it's butt with it.... this seems doable!
Winona's battle made me think about her Altaria. In the OG games, Altaria has Dragon Dance at level 33 despite learning it at a much higher level, with Cotton Guard being the "correct" move if she really needed a boosting move. However, in the remakes, Altaria not only gets stronger with some level-ups but she can also learn Dragon Dance at level 30, making the original movepool something "legal". What's her non-offensive move again? Oh, yeah, it's Cotton Guard.
I think the word I picked up on the most throughout this playthrough was 'unfortunately'; everything about Sunkern is indeed unfortunate, as even the u in Sunkern stands for 'unfortunate'.
Jrose's videos are the kinda ones that I'd watch each one atleast twice. Once to listen and fall asleep to at night and again the next day to see what I missed out on.
Just want to say, I absolutely love this series. Call me crazy, but I download these & listen to them on my daily runs, so much so that I’ve actually started re-watching them from the start (up to Hitmonchan). Just want to say thanks for the amazing content & dedication to these videos, looking forward to this one, though I might save it for part of my longer run on Sunday, thanks again!
It’s weird seeing bullet seed doing no damage. In the mystery dungeon games, it’s one of the most insanely overpowered moves ever. It’s long range and it does a crapload of damage every time. I’ve knocked out boss Pokémon in one turn using bullet seed because every hit does over 200 damage. The only multi-hit move that I’ve seen so more damage is bonemerang on a marowak. Multi hit moves are incredibly powerful in PMD
It was a questionable change to put Wallace as champion for Emerald. I liked the variety that Steven gave at the end. When playing normally with an on-level team, you'd need some diverse moves and types to take him. Wallace was sort of a higher level repeat of Juan for me.
It's amazing how consistently entertaining your content is. Despite the structure and delivery being very similar for every video it just works. Love it JRose!
Hey @Jrose11 video idea here: It would be interesting to see like an "in-depth" video of like the routes you take in your Red & Blue runs and why. There are a lot of optional routes. misty or rival2 first, gym order, about saving time, getting TM08 even though it takes a battle, your most cursed trainers, maby routes with no mandatory trainers you normally cut out has some story you could show? And other trivia like how you plan your runs / workload / your fastest and slowest RT Runs! : ) Have a good one
So during the Gen II era, in one of my game playthroughs, I really wanted to use Sunkern, as I saw that it could learn Sunny Day, Synthesis, and Giga Drain upon level-up, and then if you evolved it on the same level it learned Giga Drain, the Sunflora would learn Solarbeam, and my young brain at the time thought that would be an awesome moveset (what is type coverage?). I unfortunately did not know at the time how garbage Sunkern's stats were, and actually training it up to Lv. 46 was an utter pain... and the resulting Sunflora, wasn't particularly worth it either. I feel like this Sunkern run was a bit of redemption for this little seed, especially with the final moveset being almost the same (but with Growth instead of Synthesis).
I wanted to say thanks for introducing me to solo and challenge runs. I don’t think I would’ve tried them if I hadn’t had so much fun watching yours. But I finally figured out how to get extra save files in ORAS and I’m doing a beedrill run in alpha sapphire now. It’s been great, and I’ll probably do more. Thanks for doing what you do!
@@ShinyTillDawn honestly, no. I did smallant do some challenge runs, but it was smallant so I just assumed I could never. Jrose made it seem more down to earth somehow, like something I could see myself doing
As soon as you said "difficult to beat bulky pokemon with only grass type moves" I thought "Don't Winona and Drake have dragon-flying types?...Oh no... " XD
While using a magikarp for the mandatory double battles is a decent solution, I've wondered why you dont just catch a duplicate of the pokemon youre using instead. That sounds more like a true solo run to me, but maybe im going insane. Great content as always!
Thank you Jrose. Was going through a terrible gallbladder attack and your video helped me get through it. Part way through couldn't really even listen to the video anymore but just seeing you repeat a fight again and again trying to get a win gave me something to focus on. In normal circumstances your videos are top notch entertainment, keep it up.
I remember doing an Azurill run and it was pretty fun, it was difficult at times (Tate and Liza, Phoebe was annoying because i couldn´t spam Return and Dusclops used Curse a lot) i finished the run at level 97, i dont know if it is possible to do it at a lower level but hey, it is what it is
Thanks for doing these runs, they’re incredibly interesting to see, and I appreciate branching into the later games, As there’s only so many Gen 1 runs, and seeing later games feels way fresher.
Great vid I really like the gen 3 challenges. If you’re looking for more ideas i think it would be a fun run if every battle was a double battle but only be able to use plusle and minun
"Unless I were to get insane luck with Attract, it's very difficult to win with my current strategy" Yeah, I have that problem even outside of Pokemon. Jrose. haha
I want to see a tier list for Emerald like the one you did for Red&Blue. Anyway, it was a very entertaining run to watch while stuff was encoding at my job.
Although not necessarily easy to get, white herbs can be obtained by pickup if you ever wanted to try a white herb strat to deal with intimidate/sand attack
Yeah, but it was Emerald that introduced the pool of Pickupable items varies by level, and White Herbs are a level 41 at minimum and a 1% at that and the highest level pick up mon one can have in Emerald is 27. Even if he did allow for the daycare, it's 50,000 steps, and he'd still have to grind for the White Herb.
Been watching for a decent time now. You're one of my favorite pokemon content creators. I love these soo much I sometimes fall asleep to challenges I've already watched. Listening to this knowledge helps calm me. Thank you for being great :)
I like the fact that jrose can consistently put out entertaining content that speaks for itself without having to resort to the usual begging that most youtubers unfortunately do.
@@mrwillard95 How tf do you not know who they are? Anyway, MDB took over Pikasprey in raking in views for Pokémon challenges. He had devolved to using double team to cheese challenges. Dream has 26 million subscribers, and he manipulated RNG in his popular Minecraft speedruns and got away with it.
Thank you so much for the abundance of content recently, Jrose! Just please be sure to not over work yourself and get burnt out on Pokémon. That would be catastrophic.
(17:20) Overheat is 140 base power, not 150. But yeah, it's way too much for your seed. (29:44) Maybe it's because Attract targeted Swablu, while Growth only buffed the user, so it can only use Mirror Move on something that targets it? (33:09) There are certain trainers that get registered in your PokéNav in RSE, and you can get into rematches with them. It's a bit finicky, but usually I find that if you enter and leave the route that the trainer is on rapidly and repeatedly (like, by going up and down across the border between Route 104 and Rustboro, for example), this greatly increases the likelihood that trainers on that route will suddenly want to rematch you. And, when you first open the PokéNav, if its big blue light on the left is blinking, that means there's a trainer on that route that's ready to rematch you, so that can be a quick way to check (Route 104 is particularly good for money, because of the Lady and Rich Boy that can both rematch you on that route). However, this doesn't seem to work all that well for some places like Petalburg Woods that you have to screen transition into (I can almost never get the Bug Catcher there to rematch me at will, for instance). (1:15:43) Actually, you'd need 6 Growths to double your power compared to 2. With 2 Growths, you have 200% power. With 4 Growths, you have 300% power, not 400%. Therefore, it would take 6 Growths to reach 400% power. (1:16:58) Yep. With just 5 Growths under your belt, you only have 350% power, which is not quite enough. (1:18:10) Clutch crit FTW! (1:18:35) You're welcome! (1:20:05) And that's game, with a first-try flawless victory on Wallace! Huzzah!
I just want to say thank you for the Videos and your work man. I enjoy your content very much just started to follow you on twitch as well. Hope you keep going and you really deserve to become much bigger. Best wishes from Germany ✌️
Just throwing this out there for future Gen 3 stuff because of your Glacia battle where you thought setting up against the Blizzard Sealeo wouldn't be viable (despite many other luck based strategies used throughout), Blizzard doesn't get its accuracy negating during Hail effect until Gen 4. Great run though, glad you're branching out more recently. Gotta say though, I feel like you make certain aspects of these way harder on yourself than they need to be. Specifically referring to the berry fiasco near the end, why if you're modifying your save (I assume this is what you meant by "importing" it to something like PKHex) you don't just tinker with your EVs manually since it's fundamentally the same thing. The same idea could be applied to using Candies to level up instead of fighting wild Mons, although I think there's probably limitations to the legitimacy of this ideal such as modifying IVs for different Hidden Powers (or for anything really) at different points in the run or changing your ability in games before the Ability Capsule exists/is obtainable. Obviously if a run is borderline impossible I'd prefer to see a Mon reach its max potential by any means necessary before giving up on it (such as the Spinarak run), but there's definitely a balance to be reached between logical convenience and illogical abuse. Just wanted to drop this idea out there if it would make these easier (production wise) and more enjoyable.
I legit dump it and just use an emulator, there's 0 modification happening. On Emulator the in game clock is tied to the real clock so it can be changed.
Unfortunately no coverage. Only moves that could help it are by TMS. Useful moves can be taught are Sludge Bomb, Toxic, Sunny Day, Attract and of course, Protect.
Very cool run! During Brawley to be fully optimal you could ingrain on the turn meditite is being healed. Since you know you won’t take damage from him. Could save PP. didn’t matter tho
I forget if Gen 4 has the Fateful Encounter flag so Darkrai will obey or not. If doing a solo run you'd need to be able to make it so Darkrai will obey in the first battle or just lose it since it isn't required to win then edit it in a save editor to be Fateful Encounter. I know Gen 3 had it for Deoxys and Jirachi, maybe Celebi and Mew, where if that flag isn't checked it won't listen to you like a traded Pokemon.
Fun fact, I beat ORAS with a Sunkern (as part of a team, it was "every bad pokemon from each generation" themed), and he.. disabled Mega Evolutions with Worry Seed. Good times.
Man I love the vids you do from the later generations. Don't get me wrong, the gen 1 runs are gold, but it's cool to see you flex those battling skills with more intricate (at least, intentionally) mechanics.
This was a cool run! Admittedly I've always had a soft spot for Sunkern and especially Sunflora. Part of me wishes they were better than they actually are, since I'd love to use one on a team one day just because I've always liked it and found it cute. But hey - pokemon don't have to be good or strong to be one of your favourites!
It is kinda strange though, typically if a pokemon is very weak in its base evolution it will evolve into something pretty good like Garados, and Sunkern needs a special stone that only worked on 2 pokemon when it was introduced. You would think Sunflora would be a good grass type but no, just average to below as far as stats go
@@glitchin1233 this is very common especially in older gens - earlygame pokemon are supposed to be weak, lategame pokemon are supposed to be strong. this is also why rock throw had 60% accuracy in gen 1 - early trainers use rock types, so make rock types moves worse
You can rematch trainers in RSE, they just don't call you like in GSC and you can't fight them on command like with FRLG's Vs Seeker. You can check who wants to battle on the PokeNav's Trainer's Eye but it's faster to go talk to them. They seems to want to battle again every 5 or so minutes and they level up a couple times themselves.
To correct you a bit- in Emerald it's not based on time when they want to battle but every time you enter their route there's a chance that they'll want to battle you. Using this strategy you can go in and out of their route quickly and almost guarantee a battle. Doing this on route 117 helps you level up very quickly faster than even victory road pretty sure
@@Eroil Hey, I also have another way of rematching too! By walking around by 255 steps, you can get a call from registered trainers! Even though, most of the time they we're just saying random things, theres a roughly 31% chance or so of them wanting to rematch! (I'm not entirely sure about the chances part, tho. If I remember correctly, the chance is applied only to gym leaders but not entirely sure. Correct me if I'm wrong!) This is maybe not the most efficient way of grinding via rematches, but it is one of the possible ways if you like to running/bike around crazily for fun or whatever and this is also a little bit of funfact about Emerald. I'm not trying to correcting you or anything. Just saying. (I know about this from looking at the source code of Emerald for fun :P)
@@nothx13 thanks didn't know about tha! Never tried rematching gym leaders in emerald to be honest I just know about this strat being very effective used it a lot in nuzlocks to quickly level up my team
Maybe you want to add a trycounter and/or timer to the battles. That way it will be easier to convey a battle's difficulty to the audience. PS: Maybe even use an overlay like speedrunners showing all the splits (battles in our case).
You might not read this but I want to say you have become my favorite RU-vidr. It’s a problem because I work full time and I will look at a video like this and plan my week around it like oh Thursday night after work this week I will get a pizza and watch the new Jrose and it’s always a blast especially with this long impossible challenges. I love you man keep up the amazing work
