Jeet Kune Do, the martial art invented by Bruce Lee, is a lot of things. But is it MMA? Is it kung fu? In this discussion with Sifu Mike Gittleson of @jkdcolorado, we delve in to his history with martial arts, and how he sees the role of JKD in the larger scope of martial arts.

Really good interview and information share. Mike knows his stuff. He has very solid views and opinions. People don’t have to agree over every aspect of a thing, in this case, JKD. But that doesn’t take away from what people choose to focus on and excel at.

Great talk. That description of Bruce’s art evolving from “connection”-relying on hand/arm contact and removing obstacles-to “disconnection”-going around obstacles and “filling the holes”-was one of the best explanations I’ve heard of its stylistic evolution. As for grappling, Bruce may not have taught it with the depth he did other things, but he certainly encouraged Larry Hartsell, who became one of the best grapplers around, to pursue it. Larry said Bruce was definitely exploring that aspect of fighting and how to efficiently move from long range into submission range.

Bruce was a pretty proficient grappler himself, but for him his other tools were a lot more efficient, hence, why only one of his known fights ever ended in a submission in where he took down a gang member in 1972 in Hong Kong.

@@axelstone3131 Are you talking about the Enter the Dragon scuffle where he trapped the extra's arms, swept him, then pummeled him till he gave up? If it's a different story, I'd love to hear it. As you probably know, John Little just came out with his Wrath of the Dragon book that's the best thing I've read on Lee's real-life skills and encounters. And in a Greenville Academy video, Jason Korol had a very interesting take on Lee's grappling and the argument that he hadn't "fully explored it." He said that Bruce, being the obsessively thorough guy he was about what worked, DID fully explore it and kept what he needed for his goal of NOT going to the ground or getting up from it as quickly as possible. As Wally Jay said, Bruce was primarily interested in the damaging aspects of jujitsu-basically causing real pain and breaking stuff, lol-and as Gittleson points out, he evolved more and more toward outside-range fighting because the inside-range, which is what he originally focused on, became more and more of a danger zone to him: i.e. if you're close enough to trap and grapple with your opponent or opponents, they're close enough to trap and grapple with YOU.

@@randalwung8715 no. You’re spot on. This fight is in the book. It was in one of the bay areas around Hong Kong a year before enter the dragon. The stuff that happened on the et of ETD is more like messing around. As for the grappling, yeh. He wasn’t interested in playing games. People don’t understand how through Bruce was. I doubt he’s really use much else from what he already knew had he lived. Reaction lag time, over complicated moves, etc. he was only interested in hitting and ended it as soon as possible. Most people have no idea what Bruce was doing of his mindset. Concepts has almost entirely destroyed Bruce’s method and approach to martial arts. “Bruce's art is based on a set of principles and philosophy. It's not do anything and call it jkd. The latter example is more fencing and boxing. And really no wing chun at all. Because Bruce had moved away from that to a more effective streamlined way of fighting.” - Tommy Carruthers

This was an interesting video - Sifu Chris seems like a good dude. I agree with most of what was said - and from what I've seen on his videos he's got a good thing going. On the bjj thing, I think about 10 years ago that how it was taught (if then etc); but the highest levels in the world now are very "I do this and it will work"... I find myself a lone wolf 🐺 (ugh) on JKD because everyone is always arguing its this or that and I just try to train. I teach the wing Chun elements as historical preservation mainly at this point as well. But I think the savate-esque kicks with western boxing, fencing footwork, and Bruce Lee strategery (lol) is how JKD should continue to evolve in the future. Lastly, I love that he's not a Self-defense nut - that JKD is just meant for da streetz. I do the same - I teach for combat sports and for street. If I'm ever in Colorado, I'll definitely stop by and say hi! (Sorry for the JKD novel lol)

To summarize, Bruce Lee said it best: "A good fight, should be, like a small play, but, played SERIOUSLY. A good martial artist should not be thinking, but not dreaming; ready for whatever may come. When my opponent expands, I contract, when he contracts, I expand; And when there is an opportunity, I do not hit, it hits all by itself." "Be formless, shapeless, like water; now if you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup, if you put it into a bottle, it becomes the bottle, put it into a teapot, it becomes the teapot; Now water can flow, or drip, or creep, or Crash! @@serenityinside1 I don’t know about her. The problem is people moan about “you’re just copying Bruce” when you learn by copying. No, you follow Bruce’s principles and train like him you will move like him or at least to the best of your ability. People just don’t get it. If you don’t train like him how can you expect to ever reach that level.

Just to set the record straight on something: Bruce Lee never took lessons with Gene LeBell---that's just one of those self-promoting lies that LeBell began to spread after Bruce Lee's death. Bruce Lee only took judo lessons from Chris Kato in Seattle and later sparred with the likes of Hayward Nishioka who, by the way, despite being a Pan Am gold medalist in Judo and a four-time AAU champion, admitted that there was nothing he could do on Lee because he was simply too fast to spar with.

@@CombatSelfDefense The Gracie's owned the early UFC and self promoted their style. But many people don't know that the Gracie family learned Judo then changed it for more sport effectiveness. MMA, with it's incredible striking and full suite of grappling is the number one style to learn for solid self defense, sport fighting, military and law enforcement. One year of training would let you destroy any Krav Maga, JKD and Jujitsu player.
