Is "Jewish" a Race or Religion? 

There are white Ashkenazi Jews (who are white and mostly from eastern Europe, ) You have middle Eastern Jews, who are more tan in color, there are black Jews from Etheopia in Israel and still in Africa and other black African Jews in Africa, and Jews of every color and race in between, so how do Jews get to be one race? I'm and African American so if I converted to the Jewish religion, does my race change, of course not, Did Sammy Davis Jr's race change when he became a Jew? did Trumps daughter's race change when she is when she became a Jew? This is unbelievable BS!!!

I got a friend who is 100 percent Ashkenazi and a Christian and he asked a rabbi if he’s Jewish and he was told “NO” so by that account it is a religion not to mention that ANYONE can literally convert to Judaism and become “a Jew” so……let me ask you if you are Mexican can you convert to becoming Japanese? ¨Race¨ is not a scientific term, it is a social-political one. And what the video is explaining applies to any other religion. The people who believe in them also have an alledged common place of origen, common cultural elements, etc. The reasoning in this video does not make Judaism any different than any other religion. :P

You define ethnicity, and your definition is actually far more specific than Google's, then say that because Judaism qualifies as an ethnicity it therefore qualifies as a religion, asserting ethnicity and religion are interchangeable but later say that, "traditionally religion and ethnicity are not the same thing, historically Judaism has qualified for both." Why though, that's the only reason for this video, why is it both since the two things aren't the same or mutually exclusive. What I get from the video by the end is, it's both, why, ad hoc. I wouldn’t go as far as calling it a race but can be cultural aspects that some people from Jewish descent can integrated into their lives. Celebrating holidays, traditions, etc. If someone celebrates Christmas or Easter it doesn’t have to mean they’re Christian or Catholic. Especially Christmas since the whole ‘birth of Christ’ happened during the spring.

BEFORE I watch this video, I will express my own sound and intelligent and undeniable opinion regarding this matter. I am an amateur linguist and anthropologist and have been for very many years. I am an uber-independent thinker, not influenced by other opinions. Noah had three sons: Japheth, Shem, and Ham. As a matter-of-factly, these three ancestral sons of Noah are responsible for all extant mankind and there are distinct 'anthropological characteristics' which are inherent in each of these three "races." Japheth is the ancestor of all Caucasians: Europeans, Russians, MOST of Indo-Iranian ancestry, etc. But wait: The descendants of these three sons of Noah did mix a lot in antiquity and throughout history. Hence, "Indo-Iranians" (people from Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, India, etc.) are darker skinned partly due to climactic factors and partly due to much "Semitic" admixture. MOST Caucasians tend towards dolichocephaly and lighter skin and lighter eye colours. There are of course many variations and exceptions. "Shem" is the ancestor of "Semites": Primarily Arabs and Israelites. In general, Semites are somewhat darker-haired and darker-skinned with somewhat wider and at times thicker lips than Caucasians. I think there needs to be a little clarification here. Race- is like Black, White, Asian, but really that's all a social construct based on physical appearance and can/has shifted based on political and cultural ideas. People can also be different races but share a culture, or the same race but have very different cultures. Ethnicity- is essentially culture. Ethnic groups share a common language, cultural customs, usually a common ancestry or national identity but not always. Often times ethnic groups will also share common religious beliefs but not always. Jews are definitely not a race... but we absolutely fit the definition of an ethnic group.

I wouldn't use the term race so much as national identity. All ancient kingdoms had their own unique religious identity, usually centered around the monarchy. The Bible was written in order to preserve a national identity in the face of repeated defeat.

Well this is completely inaccurate as being that if you look at where Abram(ham) was originally from Ur of the Chaldeans they are NOT at all white. Nor are they black. Lots of people not knowing the difference between ethnicity and race so ill break it down. A race is physical apperance, health conditions related to race, race is a evolutionary response to our environment. An ethnicity is the culture or traditons a group of people come to do and a indentify as well. Not following heres an example. European racially are white, over thousands of years different cultures formed and collapsed created a plethora of ethnic identies. Lots of ethnic folks get together and eventually form states, you get the rest. Relgion is different from ethnicity because you can have multiple ethnicity's practicing a religion, Catholics or muslims. Jews have ethnic jews, religious jews or a little bit of both.

You can't use mythology to declare an ethnic or racial group - that's not how genetics works. Judaism is a religion. Jews practice Judaism. The ethnic background of the original Abrahamic faiths is (mostly but not exclusively) Semetic. Jews are for sure an ethnicity and religion, but they cannot be considered a race, at least in the modern sense anyway. The Jewish diaspora have completely different phenotypes depending on where the majority of their ancestors come from, meaning they cannot be considered a race, as they are part of several different races already.

This video is a fairly good attempt to clarify the matter, but still misses the mark. It REALLY surprises me that so many people don't understand that Jewish people are a racial group. Judaism isn't only an ethnicity because of cultural commonalities like language and national origin. Jews around the world DO all originate from Israel historically and do share those cultural commonalities, however it is extremely important for people to understand that foundationally the Jewish people are genetically a family/racial group. A person is Jewish if their mother is Jewish - it is something we are born into, and not a belief or culture, but a family lineage. It is your family and your people, regardless of your ideology. Many Jews are not religious but this has no bearing at all on the fact that they are Jewish. It isn't just language or traditions either. Even if someone didn't know a single word of Hebrew, didn't know a single recipe, or tradition, or anything about Jewish beliefs or practices of any kind at all, and even if they live their entire life that way, nonetheless if their mother was Jewish, then they are Jewish too. If one had good records, they could trace their family - their parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, etc... going back each generation, directly back to Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham. In my personal case, because my mother's father was also a Levi, and the *only* way to be a Levi is to be a direct descendent in an unbroken line going back to Levi the son of Jacob/Israel, that means I can with 100% certainty trace my family directly back to Levi, the son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham.

It’s both. You can be associated with Judaism as a religion but ethnically you can be one too without practicing. You can tell by the last name. Lieberman, Silverman, Tanenbaum, Klein, Cohen, Goldstein. All Jewish names. So even if you don’t practice Judaism you’re still part of it ethnically. It’s why people with Jewish names can “return” to Israel as a “returning Jew” to the homeland. And it’s why they believe themselves to be “Chosen ones” who believe themselves to be better than anyone else.

Jews today are not an ethno religious group. Unless they can prove their connection to the ancient judeans via DNA it doesn't make sense to claim they are still an ethno religious group. Throughout history all groups of people have mixed by intermarriage, conversation, rape and so on. This is not unique to any particular group of people. Ashkenazi Jews are a sub group of Europeans. Yemenite Jews are descendants of himyar (people of the himyrate kingdom) and are Arabian in ethnicity. This is proven by DNA. Even if some Jews show a connection to the levant, according to the Jewish faith you most come from a Jewish mothers whom in order to be considered Jewish unless you or the market goes through conversion and in that case is definitely not ethnically Jewish. Abraham was a Mesopotamian who had 2 sons that were split into 2 different groups. They are literally brothers...without a doubt people who claim to be directly connected to Abraham have very little proof of such. It's a nice narrative but unless it can be proven with strong facts it doesn't make sense.
