Is leaded fuel better as than unleaded gasoline? 100 octane low lead aviation fuel (100LL avgas) is tested in several engines: Wankel rotary, see through piston engine, fuel injected generator, small engine for lead build up, and Predator 212 for top speed performance. A special thanks to Matt from the Warped Perception RU-vid channel for loaning his rotary engine to me! Please check out his channel. His videos are absolutely amazing!!! I truly enjoy Project Farm videos. Extremely well presented, and I highly suspect an engineering or other technical background. 100LL was introduced to replace 100/130, 115/145, and 80 octane aviation gasoline in the late 1960s. It pretty much made no one in aviation happy. For larger aircraft using the two high octane fuels it forced some operators to pay for expensive modifications and Supplemental Type Certificates (STC) for their engines. Many of those engines would not produce the same max horse power using 100LL. In light aircraft (generally 200 HP or less) there were no mods or STCs required, but there were other headaches. While, 100LL contains half the amount of lead found in in the two high octane fuels, it contained 4 times more lead than the 80 octane fuel the light aircraft engines were designed to use. Frankly, because of the greater lead content, 100LL was a paine in the ass for light plane pilots. It was a regular occurance to have your engine fail the magneto (ignition system) check during the pre-takeoff checks due to lead fouled spark plugs. The solution was increase engine speed to about 1800-2000 RPM then lean the fuel/air mixture till you got a small RPM drop to heat the cylinders and burn off the lead. Once in the air with higher RPMs there wasn't much problem, but at low RPMs it caused frequent fouled plugs and stuck valves.

80 octane was just motor fuel. It was stil available at our airport up until 20 years ago or so. It dissapeared because of lack of demand. There are dumbasses out there who certify their planes to run on motor fuel. As bad as pump gas is, you'd have to be insane. An older gentleman near me who had his own airstrip died awhile back, and his widow waited several years to auction off his toys. The only thing that was returned to running order easily was his plane, because of the 100ll. Everything else had to have the tank and carburetors tornmoff and cleaned. They still make 115/145 mostly for warbirds, but you have to buy entire lots of production at a time.

Funny thing was I was buying 100LL for my goped today at the airport and they had a student come back from taxiing that failed a mag check, you could hear it run like shit, the mechanics were trying to burn it off as I left with my can.

A nice reature of AvGas is that you don't need fuel stablizers. Basically you can store it for many years without any issues. It's also ethanol free so it won't cause rust if it sits in a gas tank in a "hobby car" sitting in a garage for years.

really? I've had 3 rx7s and 2 rx8s and all the engines ran great when I bought them and when I sold them. Most of the issues with rotaries is due to poor preventative maintenance, basic maintenance/upkeep, and lack of knowledge of how to care for them. I've also seen them abused and hold up. People doing stupid things blow them up, and probably blow up honda engines as well. No engine withstands abuse and neglect.
@kuromurasakizero9515
@kuromurasakizero9515 3 года назад
@Meme Man that is a myth. abuse and neglect kills engines. I've seen plenty of dead Hondas on the side of the road. I've seen them smoking. I watch SMA and plenty end up in the shop with lost compression on a cylinder. The issue is, there are hundreds of millions of piston engines on the road and its normal to accept some die. There are a handful of rotaries on the road and when they die from similar neglect and abuse, a big deal is made out of them. Add to it they are in sports cars in the U.S. and you get people that buy them to be hard on them. Pretty much any car make and model has a forum with people asking questions about their engine problems. If piston engines were immortal, there would be a lot less shops out there fixing and rebuilding engines. What you don't see much of is success stories. The guy with 200k on a rotary isn't in videos. Take Rob Dahm, he abused his 3 rotor and it held up for many years until he did something stupid on the dyno; because he kept it lubricated properly. If you keep up: lubrication, cooling, fuel, ignition, exhaust ... and rev the shit out of it on a semi-regular basis (not over-rev), you will have a happy, long life rotary. It is high maintenance. You can find plenty of examples of piston issues if you are willing to look, be open to it. Top Gear joking about Porsche catching on fire when hamster bought one. Ferraris catching on fire. Etc the list goes on forever, if you get out of the echo chambers and shit fests. have a good day, stay safe out there.

1st off... yet another great video! Kudos! You won't see much (if any) gain in performance with these engines. They simply aren't designed to get the most out of the fuel. Higher octane fuels require significantly higher compression, ignition advance, and atomization to achieve their potential gains. There is a slight advantage in power by volume, as there is no ethanol in the aviation fuel... but without a properly tuned engine, that advantage is unattainable.

Many of us high School guys used to run If I remember right 110/94 mix of avgas premium leaded for the high school nationals at our local quarter mile track. They were held as the seniors were graduating. The rules were any vehicle could run, had to go to the local high school, had to have a license, permission slip if under 18, had to have good brakes, no leaks, good seatbelts and a helmet along with an overall safety inspection. We'd spend 2 days before getting tuned up to run that mixture and doing anything else to try to get an advantage. fuel injected corvettes were the easiest to set up, most guys were swapping in electronic ignitions tossing the points and changing jets in the carb, you could hear guys trying their setups all over town! Appreciate the video, it brought back some good memories! Wish we could've took video of some of the spectacular engine failures from running too high of an octane and having the mix too lean.

@@tenkillcombo -- that's an old wive's tale. Higher octane has a higher activation energy but once ignited, burns at the same rate, within a few microseconds. Read "The Internal Combustion Engine in Theory and Practice, Volume 2" by Charles Fayette Taylor. You only need to read the first four chapters. And higher octane allows for advanced dynamic timing (static or base timing is a function of the combustion chamber shape), which is partially why higher octane fuels give more MPG. Higher compression ratio can be used which gives more horsepower and further improves MPG.

Correct, you do NOT want to run LL fuel in a modern fuel injected engine. The motor will be fine, but you will absolutely destroy the O2 sensors, as the lead poisons the platinum wire in the sensor itself. It will also cling to the cats. But if you have a race motor with speed density and no exhaust side sensors, or a carb, have at it. One other thing the older engines had too were valve rotators... they continually changed the position of the valve every time it closed so it wouldn't let lead buildup mess up the sealing. If you had an old engine and didn't run leaded, even high octane, you'd still kill the valve seats as the rotators would chew right through them.

No it won't blow up your O2 sensor oh, it's an aviation fuel , Aviation Motors have fuel injection and O2 sensors. The reason it's LL low LED is so it doesn't burn up the O2 sensor. And older engines that used leaded fuel because lead actually was a lubricant for the valve to the cast iron head since they didn't have steel seats back then. Good try though.

@@MarkSmith-zt2zl yeah sorry about that my kid got ahold of my phone, he's 16. He has a decent idea, missed a couple steps here. He just assumed since it was fuel injected it was electronic, since cars use them. But as far as ll100 the LED is so minimal that it would take a very long time to kill an oxygen sensor in a car, we've used it before. The mechanics out there always told me when I was a kid that the hundred octane was needed 4 as they go up in altitude they lean the motor down with fuel, as they lean it out it tries to detonate. So the higher octane is supposed to help offset that. That's at least what I was told. Thank you
@MarkSmith-zt2zl
@MarkSmith-zt2zl 4 года назад
@@moonshinemenace6611 I read other comments that were less informed further down the line. Referring to cast iron heads... Got tired of correcting. 100LL is somewhere in the 3ppm lead. You could run it thru cats for extended periods of time without harm. The lead in fuel serves many purposes, protecting vavle seats and guides primarily. Pilots have manual control of mixture from full rich to fuel cut off and lean at altitude based on power setting, exhaust gas temp desired fuel consumption at cruise...etc. 100LL is widely misunderstood, as many more commens demonstrated.

basically . . . you ruined the engine. sounds like to me , you used moth balls to get that increase in '' umph '' and ruined it. lol and now it wqill only run on high '' UMPH '' . . . lol lol, no one [gas stations ] is allowed to fill the gas tank with AV fuel. if you have the money, you can get a 50 gallon barrel, and have it filled and you can take it home yourself.

Only in older cars originally designed for leaded fuel. Modern engines have improved metallurgy which negate the need for lead anymore. The main reason why they removed lead from fuel was due to environmental and health dangers. Lead is bad for the environment as it is a heavy metal and was leaching into water supplies (mainly from boats). It also leads to brain damage.

How do you drill start those engines? Do you have a ratchet adapter on the drill? If not, how do you make sure the drill doesn’t “take a ride” once the engine starts?
@joshchristian6101
@joshchristian6101 4 года назад
I tore mine apart after the cord snapped and if you take off the plastic covers and the spring loaded cord assembly, you will see a nut. Ratchet adapter is 5 bucks at harbor freight for the 3 common sizes.

I've never had an issue staring an engine with a drill, just pull the drill off the nut before stopping the drill.

Ratchet adapter? You mean socket adapter?
@ryanurukalo4347
@ryanurukalo4347 4 года назад
Richard no, it is a ratcheting adaptor that goes between the drill and the socket, so whenever you release the trigger on the drill, the drill doesn’t “take a ride”.

if you don't have high compression its not much advantage to run av gas. but if you cut the mixture way back and turn thr timing up. advance it since that fuel burns slower and cooler. watch out. 😁

I try to explain to people that same thing and they say I'm nuts. Higher octane is a must for high compression engines but it can actually make less power if it's not needed or adjusted for it.
@egodeathplease
@egodeathplease 4 года назад
i used to drive my car right up onto the tarmac and put 100LL in it. but it had high compression, no cats and an easily adjusted carb and timing. if you tried that with cats on you wouldn't get to far but i'd like to try it on a newer self learning. system with the. wideband o2 sensor. (cats removed of course)

@@augustreil I once heard/read that high octane fuel actually contains less energy per volume so if you're not running high compression (where the benefit of higher self-ignition temperatures comes in) you will have to use more fuel to make the same power

@@chelarestelar, True, lower octane is more explosive in general and burns faster.

Ive worked on aircraft reciprocating engines and those engines are designed for the lead, the lead is mostly to create a gasket seal around the valves as the seats are softer than vehicle valve seats, also they have 2 spark plugs per cylinder for a better burn which reduces lead deposits as well as redundancy in case of magneto/plug wires/spark plug failure.

Early in the ethanol age, I switched to 100LL Av gas for my small engines. The 4 strokes ran OK on it but the 2 stroke outboards that advance timing with throttle ran pretty rough. It definitely solved the hydrophilic issue I have living on the ocean in high humidity. I found an odd side effect though, that the 100LL leached the red out of any plastic tank I kept it in in a very short time. Clearly it wants to be stored in metal cans.
