Is Lightyear A Worthy Origin Story for Buzz? | The Review of the Toy Story Spin-Off

Honestly, I have trouble seeing Lightyear as the movie that Andy saw in 1995. The Buzz movie Andy would have seen wouldn’t have the witty and self aware humor or existential themes Lightyear has. It would be more like the Star Command cartoons. I personally see Lightyear as a live action reboot of what Andy saw as a kid!

Has anyone noticed that Pixar films lately have cats in them? Toy Story 4: Dragon Soul: Mr. Mittens Luca: Machiavelli Turning Red: the box of kittens Lightyear: Sox Somebody at Pixar must reeeeeeally love cats, LOL. Onward didn't exactly have a cat but there's Corey the Manticore, which is close enough, I guess.

How the heck was the toy version of Zurg more menacing than this version?

I thought Buzzlightyear was a very flawed movie, but, I was happy they took a very very big risk, the problem is that they didn't go all the way and because of that, it the story falls flat. It really had the potential to be an amazing introduction to sci-fi for children but...oh well, I am glad I watched it just to see how close it got to brilliance.

Think it’s also worth noting, in a positive way, that the soundtrack has some of the most genius puns in any of Giacchino’s music. “Zurg-onomics,” “To Infinity and Be Gone,” “Infinite MOEtion,” and “One Suite Buzz” are definitely creative ones.

Man that use of David Bowie’s Starman in your intro and the trailer was so perfect. Talk about a way to get the viewers’ attention That being said, the movie itself doesn’t grab me as much as the Star Command animated series does. I still enjoy Chris Evans, but Patrick Warburton is the goat

Boy, you would Imagine Andy's reaction only to be truly disappointed, but thankfully one of his friends at school recommended the animated series version Instead that changed his mind afterwards? I'm surprised he didn't want Sox as well for his B-Day Gift! Honestly if you *truly* want the nostalgic Buzz Lightyears experience; I recommend just stick to the original Star Commands animated series It was based on or go play Toy Story 2 on PS1 Instead and pretend this movie doesn't' exist as It's own alternative universe.

I think for this Buzz Chris Evans ins perfect bc...well he's played Captain America before, a heroic guy who also is very...dedicated to his morals and what HE sees as his mission/duty. While this wasn’t as great as Pixar’s other works or the other Toy Story movies, this was still a fun movie with amazing visuals.

I wonder what would happen if Team Lightyear from "Buzz Lightyear of Star Command" ever got a chance to meet Team Lightyear from this film.

Lightyear should have been inspired by old 50s pulps, like Dan Dare, Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers. Instead of that, they tried to ape Interstellar and failed miserably. The old "Star Command" cartoon wasn't perfect but it handled the concept WAY better than this thing. Also, SPOILER making Zurg and Buzz the same person because of time travel shenanigans is the WORST IDEA EVER. Zurg is supposed to be an alien evil emperor. In this movie he's not alien, he's not evil and he's not an emperor. He's not even a character, but an empty suit. So, in short: I'm heartbroken with how the movie turned out.

The stupid censorship of Malaysia had to pull it off just days before it could be released where I live. Yet, they allowed Beauty and the Beast 2017 and Onward in cinemas uncut with those LGBT moments and they did allow the Owl House episodes with Amity kissing Luz on the cheek on Disney plus.

My brother and I theorized that Chris Evans, the voice of Buzz is the real voice, and Tim Allen is the toy soundalike. The reason we think this is of course, how usually if there's like a short, TV show, video game, and yes, even toys, the real voice isn't always there to do it, so a professional voice actor is brought in. This is why Tim Allen had a couple soundalikes to fill in for him in the past like Pat Fraley and Patrick Warburton. I personally think Fraley is the best Tim Allen soundalike. ^^

Finally, I have been waiting for this since the movie came out.

I love this movie, mainly because I've been worshiping the ground Buzz Lightyear walks on since childhood, and I'm glad they left the real Zurg's existence open at the end. But this was still supposed to be the movie that Andy saw in theaters back in the late 1990s. And the lore just didn't fit enough for them to say that. Also, despite the lesson, the movie really could've done better without the future Buzz plot. I actually have an idea of how the movie could've been while also giving us the Zurg we love. SPOILER ALERT! The movie would be the same until Buzz would get back from his final test flight. Buzz would come to discover that Emperor Zurg has destroyed the laser shield and turned the colony into a city called Z-city. (Think Aku from Samurai Jack) and would need Izzy's help to trigger a rebellion. I would also have established a division between the people who wanted to stay on the alien planet and people who wanted leave the alien planet. Zurg would use propaganda and false promises in order to gain the people who wanted to leave as his followers and have former Zap soldiers become an army known as the Z-Guard. I would also keep Zurg, who is also a cyborg, being from the future because of Buzz's multiple test flights with the crystal, causing an anomaly in time and space, accidentally bringing Zurg to the past. I would've later revealed that Zurg, voiced by Keith David in my version, is the great grandson of Cal Burnside, the commander who told Buzz the mission was over. It would then be revealed that the division among the people lead to protests, riots and eventually, civil war, which made Burnside obsessed with keeping order, and he believed in doing it through force and after succeeding, his family would later become leaders of a monarchy that wanted to spread their influence throughout the universe until the Galactic Alliance intervened in Zurg's generation. Before Zurg went to war with the Galactic Alliance, the anomaly Buzz caused would bring Zurg to the past to collaborate with Burnside, who would pretend to be a prisoner of Zurg to keep the people in line and ensure that there was no war by making those who wanted to leave join Zurg, and ensuring that those who want to stay are kept in line. Zurg's master plan would've been to use the lightspeed crystal to power his ultimate weapon of his Mothership that I call the Hyperspeed Cannon, a weapon with the capacity to destroy an entire planet based on the story Buzz told Woody in the original Toy Story. Zurg plans to basically ransom to keep the Galactic Alliance from interfering with his takeover of the universe and plans to test the weapon on the alien planet that Buzz and everyone is stranded on, which is okay with Burnside as he believes that the people are beyond saving due to Buzz triggering a rebellion. The only big difference between Zurg and Burnside personality wise is that while Burnside cares about absolute order to maintain peace, Zurg doesn't care about order and just wants to selfishly rule everything, hence why he created the Hyperspeed Cannon. Another major difference would by Izzy's backstory. Making it so that she wants revenge against Zurg because she was forcefully drafted into the Z-Guard as a child and when her parents tried to protect them, they were captured. The last time she would see them was when she was being carried by a Z-Guard member, hovering through space to get to his ship to take her away for the draft, leading to her fear of space. I would've had Darby be a former convict of Star Command turned a member of the Z-Guard, but betrayed Zurg after realizing how much of a tyrant he is. As for Mo, he would've been an orphan who was drafted as a kid, but was kicked out of Zurg's forces due to his cowardly and quitter personality. I also would've built up to building the Buzz final suit for the final battle, including the Anti-Gravity Belt. Finally, the way I would utilize future Buzz is to have him rescue Buzz after being defeated by Zurg in the first round, only to reveal to past Buzz that he was arrested by Burnside after completing his mission for fifty years, but the anomaly past Buzz caused brought Old Buzz to the future and since then he had taken a ship off planet and lived on the alien planet's moon which would be this universes version of the planet Buzz fought Zurg on at the beginning of Toy Story 2. He would teach Buzz not to get so hung up on the past and help the people steer toward their future and help them find their own path, he would also be the one to explain to Buzz that the weakness of the Hyperspeed Cannon is the destruction of the Hyperspeed Crystal itself, leading Buzz to the final battle with Zurg on his Mothership. I would also make it so old Buzz would start to slowly disappear the moment he came contact with past Buzz, as he would theorize that a time traveler cannot exist in the same timeline as a version of himself just to make his meeting with past Buzz more dramatic and sad. I know this idea isn't perfect, and it's incredibly overcomplicated for a kids movie, but i truly think it would've kept to the lore Toy Story gave us and gave us the Zurg we deserved to see in this movie. It basically would've been Pixar's Star Wars, mainly because it's obvious that Buzz Lightyear lore was inspired by Star Wars. Zurg is basically Pixar's Darth Vader and the Space Rangers are obviously an astronaut version of Jedi without lightsabers. I also would've made one of the post credit scenes of Andy who is coming out of the theater with his mother and them hinting at Andy's birthday the next year, connecting to the first Toy Story, making this movie a prequel.

The film was alright but I think the animated show had more of a better origin and atmosphere for buzz. people can disagree if they want to plus zurg seemed like a WTF moment for me

As a concept artist, I had a big problem with the realistic gritty designs clashed with the iconic Buzz suit and Zurg's cartoony design. And it felt too modern for a movie that came out in the 90s, like Interstellar or Annihilation. I would have taken inspiration from The Jetsons, The Fifth Element, Valerian, Guardians of the Galaxy. Even games like Beyond Good and Evil and the Ratchet and Clank games would have worked too.

Wow! Toy stores decided to make toys based on the Buzz Lightyear action figure, and then decided to make toys based on the human, whom the action figure was inspired from! 🤯🤯🤯 Am I shrink wrapped?

To Infinity and Beyond! I had some fun with this good spin off. I do agree it’s not a masterpiece due to the writing not taking off well, but I found the animation to be beautiful, the characters are awesome especially with Buzz, and I also liked the references they made in the film. I’m pretty that the movie isn’t getting enough money though. I could imagine Pixar doing a full on Woody’s Roundup series for Disney + next

The way I look at Hemsworth voicing Lightyear is like how there have been many voice actors over the years taking on the role as Bruce Wayne/Batman. Each one gives their own take and it’s still good.

I, more or less, consider this separate from toy story. I look as this and see the Buzz who inspired the action figure Andy got, and inspired the tv show. Like this Buzz was a movie actor in-universe, signed a deal for merch alongside the actor for Zurg and allowed a tv show to be made of him. And then the toy story version is actually Andy making up his own adventures for his Buzz action figure. We just don't see Andy because his imagination says that Woody & Co. are sentient.

I would rather rewatch Spies Disguise which is funnier, more engaging and better written than this PIXAR MOVIE. Yes the pigeon plot works better than the villain twist.

Well, this year's animated film line up is looking to be more and more interesting so far! I'm still waiting for the right time to see it, but it's a shame that Pixar's one film to be released in theaters since Onward isn't looking up to be going in a way that we initially expected so far. The Bob's Burgers Movie - Especially unexpected for a movie based on a TV show to be good on it's own too! 3. The Bad Guys - Rounding to the score you gave for the characters 4. Lightyear - Rounding to the score for both story and character Honorable Mention(?) Apollo 10 1/2 Worst is still tied for Hotel Transylvania 4 Ice Age: Buck Wild And I'm expecting Strange World to already be on the best list....

The answer, in my opinion, is no not really, the movie is more dull than it should be, they could have done so much more with it than they did. .... also why where all the space rangers humans? I wish they added some aliens to the mix.

I’ve now finally seen the film and I’m sorry to say Mat, but for the first time, I’m gonna have to disagree with you and go with Schaff on this one. I know, it sounds unthinkable for someone like me who is so utterly IN LOVE with Disney and Pixar and has defended even their weakest films, but I’m afraid to say I found this film to be just an entirely mixed bag. I do applaud the animation being as stellar as usual, the action was really good and I thought a majority of the characters were okay, especially Sox who definitely surpassed my expectations and was actually very charming and funny. But other than that, I didn’t really find this movie very compelling and I particularly wasn’t fond of this Buzz. Chris Evans did do his best but he certainly was nowhere near enjoyable or likeable as his toy counterpart and his arc just felt hollow to me because he’s trying to fix a mistake that no one else found a problem with. Also, I found it a bit confusing that you said this Buzz was on par with his animated counterpart when you criticised his portrayal in the Star Command cartoon as being overly serious when he was actually a parody of spaceman characters. They honestly felt like the same character to me that didn’t have the humour and fun the toy Buzz had. And I hate to be another one to make this comparison, but while the emotional core of the film did have it’s heart in the right place, I do agree it was done much better and more emotional in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar. And yes, I too didn’t like this version of Zurg and the twist that went with it that honestly made no sense to me and was just so confusing. Overall, while I don’t want to stop you or anyone else from changing your opinion about this film. If you like it then good for you, I just want to share my thoughts that I agree with the majority that this was probably the most forgettable Pixar film since Cars 2. Also while I never grew up with the cartoon and the pilot movie of that one is pretty bad too, at least that one was slightly more enjoyable since it knew it wasn’t taking itself seriously and just had fun with it. I personally think Buzz should stick to just being a child’s plaything rather than a real space ranger.

When they first announced they were making a Buzz Lightyear solo movie a few years back, I was interested and when I saw the teaser I was like, "Oh yeah! I'm so going to watch this when it's officially out!", With Lightyear out in theaters and it getting a mixed rap I'm still interested in watching it but the fact Disney pretending that the Star command series they made 20 years ago doesn't exist is kinda disappointing that kids today aren't able to watch Buzz's original spinoff adventure because Disney wants you to forget about it's existence even though they display some of the show in its parks and countries banning the movie for merely showing off two woman kissing each other in a tame and loving way only makes me sad for those who want to be seen and heard but aren't allowed because they're nation's censors are closed minded about them and reminds we need to open up and change for the better. I'm fine with Chris Evans as Buzz Lightyear and does a great job and of course stellar animation being Pixar and I'm open for more stories and adventures with this version of the character if they ever return to this spinoff. I recommend it still even if it's flawed and not pixar's best work story and character wise as I want my very own Sox for Christmas too btw. 🌟 🎨 🎥 👍 🤖

Zurg looked very terrifying he's less terrifying than clipboard from foodfight

Honestly an 8/10 is the perfect rating for this movie imo. While it’s not groundbreaking and has a fairly simple and straightforward story, it’s still plenty of fun with some intense actions scenes, great humor and some solid characterization for Buzz himself. It was great time seeing a Pixar movie in theaters again since the last one I saw on the big screen was Toy Story 4, and I honestly wouldn’t mind seeing a sequel or even Disney+ series of more of Buzz and the Star Command gang’s adventures.

I don’t believe Andy, a child of the 90s is watching this movie, I believe Bonnie is watching the movie since she would be 15 when the movie come out in 2022.

Fun fact: this is the lowest rated Pixar movie on IMDb (the rating is much more lower than cars 2, which is commonly regraded as the worst Pixar movie of all time.

I really enjoyed it

I actually liked this movie. It wasn’t great, but it was still good to me. The story was alright, it was cliched but I thought it worked for this (most of the time). I’m there was some stuff that didn’t need to be so long and the Zurg twist was stupid (which is no surprise due Disney/Pixar not doing well with twists), but at least Zurg (in his robot form) was pretty menacing. I liked the sci fi action. Evan’s performance was actually pretty fitting for the human version of Buzz. Sox was awesome, and I liked one of the side characters, Mo (Taika Waititi), he was funny and no one else can tell me differently. I know a lot of people hate this movie because of, ‘that scene’, but I’m just happy that it wasn’t that big and wasn’t made a huge deal, unlike what the flipping internet would have you think. I didn’t think it was needed but at the end of the day, it’s just scene. I liked Lightyear. Wasn’t perfect but at least it wasn’t terrible. So I give it a 7.7/9+ (I don’t do 10s)

This was basically a recycled version of Atlantis with a similar plot line involving a crystal, a ragtag team of rookies, an otherworldly sounding soundtrack, and an intense heaping of action ! (It doesn’t help that it’s basically a reboot of an early 2000’s toon and both sci fi bombs were released on my buddy’s birthday i.e. the first weekend of summer) only difference is this has a slightly lighter tone than Alantis

Really enjoyed Lightyear. Feels like Buzz Lightyear of Star Command mixed with Alien and Star Wars and Star Trek, plus Jak II with its premise of being trapped in the future. The Zyclops, Zurg’s robots, remind me of a mix of the Hornets from BLOSC and the armoured shield Zurg robots from the Toy Story 2 PS1 game. These enemies used to scare me when I was a kid. Woody definitely needs a spin-off. Maybe call it Woody’s Finest Near Two Hours.

Sorry Animat, I think you’re giving this movie too much credit. For instance it has a generic story about Buzz Lightyear learning to accept rookies. This movie just gets worse the more I look into it.

It's sad,this movie was beaten by Jurassic World:Dominon at the box-office and ended up a complete disappointment, If they pushed it to theaters in December(the same month as Soul),the month after Disney's Strange World,it would've been a box-office hit. At least it's nice to see Pixar making a triumphant return to theaters after spending three movies on Disney+,if only this movie would've been more successful if released in the same month as Soul(December).

This was a good movie in my book, though not among my favorites from Pixar. As for that twist with Zurg, I personally didn't mind it and thought it worked fine with what they were going for.

While I have no problems with a couple getting married and having kids when they're the same gender, I just got confused when their grandkid was still related to her grandmother. Test tube baby, or some other more futuristic alternative? Also, even though this is technically not the Evil Emperor Zerg we all are familiar with, maybe it's here to set up to that. After all, where did this Zerg get the Zerg suit, and whose to say it wasn't remnants of the EEZ version. Also, they were toys that gave us the "lore", whose to say there wasn't some corruption of the information when they were made?

Yeah, I will admit to being disappointed with the plot twist/Main Villian's role. I will avoid the spoiler, but I feel like that was the weakest aspect of the writing and was my only gripe against the relationship between protagonist and antagonist. I wasn't the biggest fan of how there was quite a bit of downplay and felt like he should have been replaced with a different villain. I'm not talking about "Behind the armor" as quoted in the review, but the persona shouldn't even be Zurg and it seems like he wasn't ready to be in this movie. And think it would have worked better if he was teased as a future villain for a possible sequal. Side note, I also actually really liked the reverse sandwich scene.

Honestly I think this movie is pretty meh, but I’m tired of people acting like it’s trash and the Star command show is some masterpiece. Yes, Star Command has it’s charm, but it’s animation is bad even for a 90’s cartoon, the comedy is hit-and-miss (kind of like Lightyear) and it’s a bit too campy at times. Lightyear is a bit too serious, but can be really funny with Sox the cat, and has much better action than Star command. Both are like a 6/10 for me.

I think the movie was a blast! Honestly I had a great time, if I had a list of great movies this year, this is my number 2, in between the Bad guys and Turning red. I can definitely see some issues like a few of the arcs of Zurg, but It's still was an awesome movie!

Honestly, I think you are FAR too kind and generous to this movie. But I have my own review of it coming out in the near future, so I'll just leave it at that. But this film clearly wasn't done by Mrs. Nesbit. If it was, it wouldn't be so dull and would be at least entertainingly bad.

Compared to the last Buzz Lightyear movie, this one actually managed to go to infinity and beyond.

Lightyear is another masterpiece from Pixar

I've been having my fingers crossed for months hoping the movie comes out in theaters and doesn't skip theaters going straight to Disney +, after Soul, Luca and Turning Red I was happy that PIXAR finally returns to theaters since Onward. So far this is my rank: Best 1. Turning Red 2. Lightyear 3. The Bad Guys 4. The Bob's Burgers Movie Honorable Mention - Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers Worst 1. The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild 2. Hotel Transylvania: Transformania Stuff will change when new animated movies come out this year. It'll be interesting if Buzz Lightyear of Star Command gets streamed on Disney +, and a Disney + series of Woody's Roundup sounds like an interesting idea to be made.

This movie doesn’t scream out get a buzz lightyear toy for a kid. More like a toy robot cat. Embarrassing.

I love this movie but I have to agree with things said about the movie failing. The idea for this movie should have been used for the second movie. The first movie should have been Buzz’s true origin story where we see him actually go on a journey to become a space ranger and he defeats an original villain made just for the movie. I would have added an original character named Cosmos Zurgulsen which would make people wonder if this character is Zurg. He and Buzz would have been friends and Cosmos would have used his genius of programming and tech to help Buzz save the day. The second movie would essentially be this where Buzz is out in charge of exploring the planet with his team but he messes up. Cosmos helps build an army of maintenance robots to help build the city. Then when it’s time to test the flight, Cosmos goes with Buzz but an accident happens that makes Cosmos get separated from buzz in the time tunnel. A Funeral is held for Cosmos but when Zurg reveals himself, he turns out to be Cosmos and he explains how he went far into the future and saw that there wasn’t anyone living on the planet anymore but the maintenance robots were preserved. He uses his genius to rework the facility into an automated factory that mass produces the robots and he reprograms them for combat and decides to make himself a big mech suit. Cosmos can have the same drive as Buzz but he would also be jeleous of buzz for stealing the spot light from him when he joined star command. So Zurg wants to go back in time to prevent everyone from being stuck on the planet but also to kill buzz and have his past self be the hero of the first movie.

I think Lightyear is the stronger movie than Turning Red to be honest.

I had descently low expectations going into this film, but I was proven wrong. I thought the movie was Pixar's star wars, without the force or lightsabers. It was better than the last Pixar film, and I would gladly watch the movie again. 8.5/10 would have been a 9/10 if I wasn't for the twist villain

Sad how this is a box office bomb

I know some people have criticized Zurg twist as being very cliché, but then again the writers we’re no doubt trying to lower the predictability of his true identity considering that in Toy Story 2, even if it was for the sake of humours, they had revealed his identity as buzz’s father which would have been easy to figure out if they had kept that direction. So while it may not be like it was established in Toy Story, I can understand the reason for the twist.

I’m happy that no Pixar movie got the Animat seal of garbage

Since godzilla has already been in the realm of animation can you review the hanabarbara godzilla series, the Tristar godzilla series, godzilla singular point and possibly the godzilla polygon trilogy?

I really liked this movie a lot. I thought it was excellent. This may not be as amazing as the toy story movies but I thought it was a worthy addition. 9/10 for me 🌟 I understand it’s not in the leagues of Turning Red, which is the latest amazing Pixar film we got early this year, but maybe Elemental could be the next new amazing Pixar film. It could be possible that it’ll be the best Pixar film since Turning Red if this film can work out so beautifully
