Luigi's Mansion 2 is a fascinating game to me. It is so fundamentally different than the first game, but it also does so many things better than that game does. So, I wanted to know - is Luigi's Mansion 2 a Faithful Sequel? Well, let's find out together, shall we?

I love how dark moon skips the Poltergust 4000 and goes right to 5000 because the Poltergust 4000 was in Mario kart ds. Really makes you question the Mario timeline
@Rawk__

Oh wait really?? I had no idea! I guess I just never really questioned why they jumped from 3000 to 5000, but I never would've thought it was because of Luigi's Kart in Mario Kart DS. That's insanely cool!! Thank you for sharing this.

Yes! My first game was Mario Kart DS and LM2 was my intro to the series (and I really, really love it, the online multiplayer especially I sunk A LOT of time in!!), so when I saw poltergust 5000, I immediately thought of that!

Wait that is amazing. Thanks for pointing this out. People thought that luigis mansion 1 Was at the end of the Mario timelines since Bowser was assumed to be dead (the Fortune Teller says that Mario defeated Bowser so she wonders why he could be back and King boo also uses a giand Bowser.... Puppet thing and Bowser was never mentioned in any luigis mansion game after that) but yeah considering that this means Mario kart ds plays after luigis mansion 1 and Bowser is still a character in Nintendo ds so yeah.... That just confuses the timelines further but it's good to know bowswe is still kicking it

It's incredibly refreshing to see someone with a more positive outlook on what I feel is the most done dirty entry of the series - you've earned a sub from me! Even if the original will always be my favourite (the atmosphere is just unmatched), I still love the second game, and still update my iceberg for it all the time whenever I see videos like this! Very nicely done video, it's a shame it's not got more views.

The stereoscopic 3D is probably why Luigi Mansion 1 was remade on the 3ds and not the Wii U or switch, so the original game could be in 3D just like it was originally meant to be.

Something that immediately strikes out to me is it's art direction and designs. Next Level Games have this janky, asymmetrical style that matches the horror aesthetic. Even if it's more cartoony and strays away from atmosphere, something Weegee House 1 does so well, it's still pure eye candy that feels mysterious and spooky. I'm so glad they kept this style ever since

Luigi’s Mansion 2 was one of the first Mario games I remember being aware of. I used to watch a lot of Let’s Plays back in the day and this game was one I got sucked into watching playthroughs of. I was even so thick that I didn’t realise it was a sequel (probably because every playthrough I saw was the American version titled ‘Dark Moon’) Anyway, I played the game myself a few years later and absolutely loved it. It had some stellar puzzles, a really nice variety of different locations, plenty of missions I’ve gone back and replayed a bunch (basically any underground mission was a highlight for me) and there’s so much charm and personality especially with Luigi and the ghosts. I know everyone says that the ghosts are too goofy but like… it’s in the Mario universe. The original ghosts are more unique but the new ghosts make more sense in universe. Plus, they’re super entertaining to watch in cutscenes Now, I do think that this is still the weakest of the trilogy because of its stop-start nature BUT that’s not saying much when the bar is so high. The original game is one of my top 10 favourite video games of all time (maybe even top 5). As for the 3rd game, I loved it to bits but even then, I still think that 2 is nearly on par with it PS: The jump when using the Poltergust is a lost more important than you made it out to be as it allows you to jump out of the way of ghosts trying to punch you which can help reduce the damage taken during fights

It’s kind of dumb, but my relationship with this game is weird. I love this game and always will. I was at at mall originally to get my Mom a gift, I couldn’t think of anything and we were leaving so I had that “I have to buy something quick!” Mentality. I rushed to the games, saw this on the shelves, and thought why not. I fell in love and felt great beating it. And oddly enough, as I grew, I stopped playing a lot of Nintendo related games and stuff, but this game always felt easy to return to. It’s one of my all-time favorites. I’ve never played the first one either, but I just thought the game was awesome for a 3DS game. It’s awesome that you’re taking a deeper look into it.

Storywise: Dark Moon reigns supreme over the first and third games. I have an extremely old and (awful quality video) where I put all 3 games next to each other and ranked them based on specific categories. To keep the story short and simple, it was a massive sweep for Dark Moon. LM1 only really had one good thing for me and that was Boolossous. Everything else Dark Moon swept LM2 and 3 with. Even when I went back and replayed the game not just once but like 4 or 5 times. I've 100% the 3ds version and plan to do the Switch as well. I've also done a speedrun on the game at least twice (I don't have high times... but I'm happy with what I've got. I even managed to pull some glitches mid-speed run because of course I'm capable of doing it unintentionally.) I've also done the entire game with a goalto beat it without collecting any gold/treasures (no coins, bars, or bills) It made the game interesting to tackle since I had to avoid treasures. Paranormal Chaos is a challenge while not collecting any money. But I have my save file that shows me at 0 coins. Gameplay: Dark Moon has the best gameplay hands down. LM1's was very klunky and I struggled with even catching the most basic of ghosts. and LM3 the gameplay is so easily yet I hate the auto-run feature....It's just so weird, also slamming just eliminates any sort of challenge that the game has to offer.... Which is why I also beat LM3 while slamming as few times as possible. (it's crazy how the game shifts when you eliminate one of it's main skills. Unfortuately, there are points that force slams... but that's fine.... (looking at you Polterkitty.... King Boo.... Chambrea.... McFrights, and Johnny Deepend) But with Dark Moon, I have no complaints for gameplay. It just feels right. Catching ghosts is perfection in Dark Moon. Added with how the Dark Light device went from being a use with a limit to a unlimited usage item, helped make it all the better. I prefer Dark Moons version of Dark Light VS the third games version of it. Oh... and Dark Moon having a Run button is way better than auto-run. Oh... the big elephant ghost in the room... the mission structure. Actually. I prefer that more than how the first and third game went about with the full exploration. The resetting part does get annoying especially when I was doing the game treasure-less. C-1, C-5, D-2, D-3, E-3, E-2, and E-5 deserve mention for how brutal they are coinless. And for Egad... I feel like he cares for Luigi more in this game than he does in the other ones. Him calling is him checking on you. Look at how he reacts when Luigi is nabbed by King Boo. He is like "oh no!" He even pixelates himself to check on Luigi at the end. In the first game, he stays at the lab and only cares about his paintings.... and LM3... he doesn't even leave the bunker until King Boo nabs him and takes him away. All of Dark Moons Bosses are better than LM1's. EVEN the Ice Boss. yeah, the Ice Boss is the most frustrating boss for most LM fans... yet it's actually not that bad. It's honestly really easy. Atmosphere: Dark Moon reigns supreme in Atmosphere. Not much else to say. Ghost Designs: finally... I'd say Dark Moon as the best Designs of the ghosts. LM3 was a major step back, and I honestly have a neutral stance on LM1's ghosts. Overall, I can praise LM2 all day long... I really want to get the special UK pre-order bonus or get some cool pre-order bonus for the game but gotta love America...

This is very in depth, and I really appreciate hearing your perspective, so thank you for sharing! I can actually see where you're coming from with the story part. Luigi's Mansion on the GameCube didn't have much of an explicit narrative, so I can see how you would prefer Dark Moons more deliberate feeling approach to story. However, I feel the first game had a stronger narrative when it comes to fleshing out the world and setting of the game. There was a lot of non-linear and environmental storytelling going on in that game, and that works for me personally a bit more than Dark Moons approach. Though of course, that isn't to say the story in this game is bad, far from it! I don't remember much of Luigi's Mansion 3's story, because it's been a few years since I played it, but from what I do remember, I'm inclined to agree that Dark Moon has it beat. 3 had the opportunity to do something really unique and compelling, but then just fell back on King Boo being the big bad like an hour into the game. I'm also very inclined to agree with you on your points about the gameplay. While there is an innate satisfaction to be found in the first games approach to combat, in my opinion at least, I'd be lying if I said Dark Moons gameplay wasn't more compelling. The moveset really fits with the series, and while I don't know that I 100% prefer it to the moveset found in 3, I can at the very least definitely understand why somebody would prefer it. Also, sidenote, I've never heard of anybody doing a treasure-less run, that sounds very intriguing! I had never looked at E Gadd's calls from that perspective before honestly. From a character building perspective, I can actually really appreciate your belief that this is merely E Gadd showing he cares for Luigi, however I feel like it still has too much of an impact on the gameplay for me to find it all that endearing. I think the ghost design section is the only part where I have to strongly disagree with you, at least if we're comparing Dark Moon to the original game. While Dark Moon's common ghost designs are vastly superior to 3's (because 3's are basically just the same things but tweaked and slightly worse), I absolutely disagree that they're better than those found in the original game. Those designs were creepy, and off-putting, they felt vaguely human, which gave them a sense of unease. And when it comes to bosses, as much as I can appreciate the variety this game provides, the Portrait Ghosts will always be more memorable and enjoyable for me personally. However, none of this means that I disagree with your final point, because I too have a lot of praise for this game. Thanks again for sharing your perspective!

For me, there are many reasons why I'm not on board with Luigi's Mansion 2 (and maybe even 3), but after thinking about it, I came to an analogy. Imagine you're in a job interview and you perform solidly. Maybe you have some work experience, maybe you prepared some answers for common questions and things like that. On the other hand, maybe you're lacking the team spirit (pun not intended) or don't meet all the qualifications. Then you're Luigi's Mansion 2. Sadly for you, the previous applicant just nailed everything. Tons of experience, multiple projects under his belt, excellent communication, a professional on his field. That's Luigi's Mansion. The things I dislike about it are very minor and the things I like about it have rarely been executed as well. That's not something I can say about 2 and 3. While the problems I have with those games don't ruin them, I'm going to go with 1 every time, just like how any recruiter would go with the other applicant. Usually I don't use analogies, but here it's the best way I can put it. PS: There's a disturbing secret in the clock tower that E. Gadd mentions. The developers had to partially remove it, I think.

@@Rawk__ Oh! I wanna say as well, I really liked the mission structure, and I was very excited for 3, but to this day, I haven't finished yet, and I always wondered why. It might be because of how I much I like the mission structure and how different combat feels (I personally prefer the big succ over the ghost slap, but the latter adds more skill to the table, I suppose), but I'm not sure... 2 was really, really great for me, I didn't finish one yet, played the original on a friend's gamecube in 2016 and got stuck on Boolossus because I couldn't catch the last boo.... might try out the 3DS version) I'll probably at least get some progress on 3 too, i'm assuming the issue lies within the pacing

Great video Rawk. I definitely agree that Luigis Mansion 2 is a very solid game and I loved playing it back in the day. One of my favorite parts was the multiple mansions, which i think was such a great evolution for the series. Though, despite agreeing with all of your takes for the most part, I would still say that its not a faithful sequel. It probably just boils down to how to define a faithful sequel, but I think it has to do with maintaining core aspects of the experience and I think ghost variety, being able to wander about the whole mansion/non-rigid mission structure, and more detailed slightly uncanny atmosphere are a big part of the core of the game. I feel it is, in a sense, a seperate but good game. It is made good by a cohesive set of designs for the game and thus makes a solid and enjoyable game, but that set of designs diverges from the original, making it a different, but seperately good game. Not faithful, but a quality design none-the-less. Though this does also make me curious about what you would define as a faithful sequel in specific. It seemed a bit unclear, or perhaps I just didn't catch it. Regardless, it was a great video and a joy to watch. You clearly put a lot of effort into it and some in-depth thought. Its nice to see the game analyzed thoroughly on its own merits and against common preconception even if I disagree with the conckusion if the inciting question. Keep up the good work and I look foreward to what else you'll make.

That's fantastic, haha! A very reasonable reaction to that ringtone I'd argue. I think I probably could've phrased the whole nub thing better, I was talking about the silicone(?) cover that's on the circle pad. Mine kept falling off and I was not happy about it. I didn't know that jumping too much actually allowed the ghosts to escape, that's really interesting. Gives it a nice bit of complexity that I was not aware of/

The NA release of Dark Moon was on my 9th birthday and it has since become one of my favorite games of all time. My only full blown complaint would be that the 4th mansion, the Secret Mine, is weirdly short and that the boss of that mansion is probably the worst in the game. Otherwise the game is a 10 out of 10 in my eyes. :)
@Rawk__
@Rawk__ 2 месяца назад
What a birthday present! Also, yeah, Secret Mine was far and away my favourite location in the game, so to spend so little time there was woefully disappointing. But I suppose if your only complaint with a game is "This part was so good I wanted more of it", that just speaks to the quality of the experience.

When he said the jump wasn't beneficial, that got to me a bit. The jump is used to avoid taking damage from other ghosts and hazards while you're sucking them up. Basically, if you get hit often, it'd a skill issue. I never had problems with the game myself. 😂
@Rawk__
@Rawk__ 2 месяца назад
I feel I could've worded that better. It absolutely has its benefits, but I personally just forgot that it was even a part of the moveset because of how infrequently it seemed necessary. I imagine I would've found it quite beneficial if I didn't forget that it was there to begin with.

my issue with the mission structure is a lot of times right when yo're getting really into a level and are excitedy checking things out then the mission is done and you're booted out. i think maybe it could have been a 1 mission per mansion. like each mansion is your sandbox. and then you try the next one i like porterpup but it really just exists for padding purposes
@Rawk__
@Rawk__ 2 месяца назад
Yup, could not agree more. It was so frustrating to accidentally interact with the one thing that makes the mission end, especially when there was no real reason to think that it would trigger it. I personally feel like, instead of having the entire mansion be one mission as a fix, they could've just had you go to one of the Pixelshift screens to end the mission whenever you felt ready after completing the main objective. That puts the power in your hands, without sacrificing the games structure.

I think it’s so weird that they called the game Luigi’s mansion dark moon in some places and Luigi’s mansion 2 in others. Does Nintendo not know subtitles exist? They could’ve just called it Luigi’s mansion 2: dark Moon. The switch port is ditching the dark moon title all together which just makes things even weirder
@Rawk__
@Rawk__ 2 месяца назад
I couldn't possibly agree more. 2: Dark Moon would've been SUCH a cool title for this game, and it's a shame Nintendo never realised this. I imagine they ended up ditching it for the switch port because the third game was just Luigi's Mansion 3, with no subtitle, and maybe they thought it would look weird having subtitle then no subtitle? But man that seems like such a strange mindset if it's true.

For a player like me who NEEDS to check every single corner of every map, just in case there's more money hidden there, the mission structure is EXCRUCIATING, because there are so many rooms that you will need to check during every single mission, because you never know if you might find something new THIS time! So you keep playing the same bits over and over, just because you don't wanna miss out on any collectables. In Luigi's Mansion 1, once you've cleared out a room, that room will STAY cleared for the rest of the game.

2 was made during a time when the Mario franchise played it very safe. Luigi's Mansion 2 is one of these titles with its lack of unique characters and more lighthearted goofy approach compare to the first. I will say this though, it had the best of the 3.
@Rawk__
@Rawk__ 2 месяца назад
Yeah, that's a good point actually. The Wii U / 3DS era was an interesting time for the franchise, with a lot of games becoming incredibly bland, no doubt due to the success of the New Super series. I had never even considered how this would've affected Luigi's Mansion 2.

For me, the switch port is so unnecessary Well, also because in my 3ds days, i simply 100% everything in the original, even the unique ghosts for the multiplayer (and yes, that took me sooooo long that i feel i had enough of this game 😂) Nonetheless, i still love this game !

That's very fair, and I feel there are many other people who would share your perspective. However, I think with the huge success of Luigi's Mansion 3, there will definitely be a market for people who've never played this game... and people like me who beat it recently and will still buy and play it again.

About that point on the mission structure not being suited to handheld play, you do know you can close the 3DS and put it to sleep, pausing the game, right? (Or flick the switch on the 2DS) Edit: the jump can be used to dodge attacks, also how flimsy is your 3DS? I beat the game without any issues with the circle pad.
@Rawk__
@Rawk__ 2 месяца назад
Yeah that was something I somehow failed to consider. Though, to play devils advocate here, if that was the case why was the mission structure necessary to begin with? Also the 3DS I was playing on is from 2011, so it's had a fair amount of strain put on the circle pad, haha!

Also this game is too hated, like I feel like some people who played the Original are too blinded by Nostalgia to see the good aspect of this game, some reviews I seen absolutely destroy this game, sure this game isn't perfect no game is, it is just unfair how hated this game is, although I've been seen more RU-vidrs praise this game, it depends on where you look on the internet I guess 😅 I love this game to pieces It's fun to play, I hope it's better on switch!❤

How does one complain about dying and restarting a mission? Its not like you're playing a whole paper mario chapter and lost that progress. if you understood what to do to get a point before dying to begin with then there should be no complaints. To be honest I never knew what happened if you died cus I never died to begin with. But this type of restart mission penalty for being bad sounds more lean of a punishment than most other games.
@clasher138
@clasher138 2 месяца назад
21:48 sounds like someone just needs to git gud. If you didn't die it wouldn't be a problem. The ice boss wasn't that difficult either. Just gotta be precise in your timing. If you played a lot of games as a kid it wouldn't be too hard at the time
@Rawk__
@Rawk__ 2 месяца назад
I mean, in the most basic of terms, you're right. I wouldn't have an issue with dying if I just didn't die, but I don't feel like that negates my criticisms of the inconvenience that restarting the mission creates. Also, dude, I've played a lot of games, and I still struggled with that fight. I could very much be alone in that, but the timings felt veeery very finnicky.

Hopefully they remove most of the mission system and add more to each mansion, some of them are really bare looking back especially the clockworks. And a very hard mode... And a post game... And a better upgrade system... Probably getting none of this though because this is nintendo we're talking about. I also always felt that 3 was too cartoony and lacked the excellent atmosphere and superior poltergusting of 2 and 1.
@Rawk__
@Rawk__ 2 месяца назад
I feel like to change most of those things would be to change the very core of this game. While I don't think the mission structure was a particularly good fit, it's undeniably baked into the games very DNA, so I highly doubt it'll end up getting changed in the remaster. However, I will agree that difficulty options and some sort of postgame would be nice! The latter is something the series as a whole is bizarrely void of.

@@Rawk__it’s mostly the fact the game is insanely bright making the flash light completely useless. LM1 you actually couldn’t see without the light. The atmosphere was way better. 3 is the same way where it’s overly bright but I’d say 3 is better than 2 gameplay wise.
