The Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door remake has had me thinking a lot about the past, present and future of this series that I do so cherish... like, A LOT. So, today, I'll be exploring what this remake could mean for the Paper Mario series moving forward.

I wouldn’t say they’re insecure but Nintendo seriously needs a team to take note of people are currently looking for in stories and gaming! Amazing video

Definitely. Kensuke Tanabe supposedly was aware of the feedback to Sticker Star and Colour Splash, but then he made Origami King anyway so I guess he just didn’t care about the feedback? But that’s very much speculation. Thanks!

It’s funny having never played a Paper Mario game (save for Sticker Star for like 5 minutes) and still becoming invested in the series’s future simply due to the gravitational pull of the discourse. But I’ll get around to it eventually. Probably.

Yeah I had only played a little bit of Sticker Star and Super before Origami King came out, but as soon as I became absorbed in the series even a little bit, the discourse and everything surrounding the games consumed me. I’d highly recommend getting into the series though! Even if I don’t like half of its games, I still like talking about them, so they have that going for them at least.

It is baffling what they did to paper mario. They had a runaway success in 2001 and 2004, and just flushed it down the toilet for no reason. Meanwhile the Mario+Luigi series continued on the 3DS but never really recaptured the magic of Paper Mario. It's a shame that Mario+Luigi series had to die but the zombie of PM continued for years.

Yeah, it’s really confusing to me too. Gameplay wise Super Paper Mario was very different, but that was because it was intended to be on the same console as TTYD, so they wanted to make it more distinct, but even that game managed to keep literally everything else people loved about the first 2. The 3 games that followed got rid of everything that we liked, and only got incrementally better each time.

The N64 and GC were Flops financially speaking, so it isn’t too fair to compare sales numbers. I think if they really go back to the more creative format, they would make even more money

Spoiler warning, but I have to say the new secret boss in the pit of 100 trials after beating Bonetail sort of proves that if they really wanted to they still have the creativity to make a new game like the old ones. I see a lot of people with the mindset of "Nintendo's a bigger company now, and they left storytelling behind for gameplay", but seeing them add so seamlessly to the game with such fun and interesting encounters really gives me hope that they haven't lost that original charm. Same with the Mario RPG remaster they did. Also the unlockable art book really shows how much care was put into maintaining the original game's charm.

Sticker Star was my first Paper Mario game, and I loved it as a kid but as I grew older and I started to hear peoples' complaints with it, I started to understand them. The music slaps and it had its memorable moments (Snifit or Whiffit being my favorite), but I haven't replayed it since the Origami King came out. Next I played Origami King, and I think some peoples' complaints with the game are a bit silly but many of them are totally fair. I love it but it ain't for everyone I guess. All that being said, I haven't played Thousand Year Door yet but I want to, maybe around Christmas I'll have the time to pick it up. I'm interested to play that one and then go back to the others, see if my opinion changes any. Regardless though, I totally agree that this remake is a huge sign. I hope the next Paper Mario game is something that can take the best of both the older and newer Paper Marios, and unite the fans under one fantastic game.

The music in Sticker Star does slap, same goes for the other modern entries too. And yeah, I think playing TTYD was what turned me sour on the modern games (other than sticker star, I hated that even as a kid). Origami King was the first in the series I played all the way the way through myself, so I really enjoyed it at the time, but looking back on it with the experiences of the rest of the series to refer to made me like it a considerable amount less. Maybe that’s unfair on the game? But I can’t ignore the fun I had with 64 and TTYD when I just didn’t get the same experience from any of the modern trilogy. If you do get TTYD, I hope you enjoy! Also, I totally agree. Origami King in particular has a lot of really exciting stuff going for it, so if they can balance its strengths with what we loved about the first 3 games, they’d have a real winner on their hands!

Sticker Star, Color Splash and Origami King where the equivalent of Square Enix releasing Final Fantasy 17 with no exp and level ups. Just a beat em up. Then regardless how much backlash they get, they do the same for FF18 and FF19 and dont listen to critisism.

@@Dolphin2048 Paper Mario 64, TTYD, and even Super Paper Mario are all leagues above the next 3 games. The only positive about Origami is the grafics. The circular puzzle "fights" gets old realy fast. The fake partners are nowhere like real partners. You can chose witch one you use. Cant control them, they only attack 1 enemy if you fail the circular puzzle. The Toad are still boring and generic. No girls, no kids, no old toads. No Toad with unique clothes. Same for goombas, koopas and all the other races. You cant say its the best unless you a kid who didnt play a real Paper Mario game.

I don’t think it’s particularly likely personally, but I would absolutely love for that to happen. 64 is a fantastic game, and I think it’d be interesting to see a modern take on it, especially considering the series has gone in a drastic different direction visually with every game after 64.
