#177 In this episode we ask ourselves is our boat worth saving after finding a scary discovery during our haul out.
Two years ago we had an emergency haul out of our boat. This time we actually scheduled a haul out in order to paint the bottom of our boat, fix a couple of things and then get back in the water. But there was something we didn’t know that was waiting for us once we pulled Saoirse out of the water. We have our spot booked for 10 days and we have a lot of work to do. One of the items on our list to do was to find the leak in our boat that was causing water to gather in our centerboard wells. After sucking out the standing water from our bilge and the centerboard wells, the water came back. This wasn’t a good sign. Why was water coming back into while we were OUT of the water? This led to a VERY MESSY discovery that leaves us wondering if our boat is worth saving.
big love,
Beau + Brandy

Get a hammer and lightly tap the whole keel area. You will find the voids as the sound will change from solid fiberglass against lead to fiberglass cavity with or without water. Then mark the void pattern and drill exploratory holes as you did at the bottom testing for water penetration. Where delamination between fiberglass and lead has occurred you can cut the fiberglass out and let it dry out naturally. Or drill more drain holes at the bottom of the cavities let it drain then epoxy the holes closed and make larger holes at the top of the cavity and fill the cavity with liquid epoxy resin. The best is cut the bad fiberglass out and reglass the bad area.
@SvMobyduck
@SvMobyduck 2 года назад
Completely right. Fill your voids from bottom to top. I like to use fillable caulk tubes and hand mixed 5:1 thickeners if I like. Then pump it up. I use little wood plugs like screw hole plugs to smack into the next drill hole. There is another resin I might experiment with there. It's called csr from adhesive technologies. It likes to expand when water hits it but it makes a hard plastic like resin when it hardens. It's a hybrid eurethane. But good stuff. Bit more expensive than epoxy. But the expanding action when it hits water is sweet. I used it often to fill cracks and rotten gunite in swimming pools. Sometimes I go with 5:1 in the large voids areas,. Let it harden then shoot csr for the fine cracks. It's thinner than 5:1. I repaired a 4 sandwich thick layup that was completely rotten in my cockpit with injections like that,. Those voids we're 1/2" thick and about a 2 sq ft area under my steering pedestal. I do ring rows on it now and it doesn't move. Don't worry you can make it water tight. If you want to know more about injection let me know. I made a career of it, and retired early. Don't grind that encapsulation out!!!!!! That will give the hull a weakness that will always make you feel uneasy. Worried when your beating to windward, worried if you run aground. It'll be the first thing you run your hand over every haul out. Just keep that devil away completely.

The water is most probably coming into the bilge through the two nuts/shaft holding the pin for the swing keel, then finding it’s way into the cavity encapsulated that holds the lead ballast . You should pour water into section by section of the bilge with red food colouring in it and see where it comes out to determine where the water travels from inside the bilge to the cavity surrounding the lead ballast area. Hope this helps . The amount of surface these guys ground for the skin fitting is crazy half would of been more than adequate🤣

@mikemalone2834 2 года назад
Your exactly spot on , the pin bolts are suspect! I knew a gent many years ago with this problem and that's exactly what was going on, he did away with the center board and sealed it up in the keel, never had a problem with it again..
@andrewdrew677
@andrewdrew677 2 года назад
@@mikemalone2834 I think you right, I would do away with the centre board . This is for directional stability, to hold point to windward however the percentage difference can’t be much if removed. I had a long encapsulated keel boat once, it sailed like a pig to windward 😄 I’m wondering if this model was a home completion type boat as some companies sold hull deck and bulkheads and individuals would complete them.

@@BeauAndBrandy one has to consider the resale value when modifying boats, however in your case I can’t see it causing a issue. As far as I’m concerned it’s a design fault as the pins giving pivot to the keel are below the waterline a recipe for disaster. Other sailboats that have swing keels or center boards have the pins located above the water line. Basically a box that sometimes incorporates the dinette table, a Beneteau first 24 swing keel is a perfect example .
@MrMrmoonbowrd
@MrMrmoonbowrd 2 года назад
I had the same problem on a 35ft Yungsun. I had it professionally repaired. They drilled 1 inch holes along the bottom and top of the keel and forced hot air into the cavity between the fiberglass and the encapsulated keel. The after several days of drying the gap between the hull and the lead they pumped resin/fiberglass bits into the bottom till it came out the top, filling the void. it took about a week and some specialized equipment but the boat was better then new and it solved the problem.

Hey, Beau and Brandy, I love your sailboat's underwater configuration. Cutaway forefoot with a full keel and a barndoor ruder hng from the keel. as much protection as you can ask for based upon the hull design. She must ride and sail like a jewel. Comfortable and easy at about full power all of the time, assuming you have the right combination of sails. I had a 1976, Challenger, Ketsh rig with all hanked-on sails from bow to stern. My Challenger could and did sail herself from west to east and back and from south to north with the sails properly set.

Find a path to the deepest accessible part of the keel bottom and put a pick up tube to a dedicated lower bilge pump. Some water has been down there for decades and you used the boat many years without a bone dry lower bilge. It just goes with the encapsulated design. It's not great but you don't have to throw the boat away over it.

This will be a test of your soul! I personally would retire her. Lots of reasons why I chose this scenario. Biggest one is time and money and safety. @anhilyaadventures306
@anhilyaadventures306 2 года назад
They are so many variables here. You'd want to get a good marine engineer to look at it. Lead ballast is good as it won't corrode, but you don't know how long this was going on, where the water is coming from and the full extent of the delimitation (separation between the lead keel and fibreglass encapsulation). In ideal world, you'd strip it all down and re-encapsulate the keel for a permanent long-term fix as well as determine the leak from the bilge area and seal it as well, but that may not be cost and time effective.

Not a fan of center boards, get about eight inches behind the ballast and put in a garboard plug, it allows you to drain the keel everything you get hauled out. Weeping keels aren't the death of lead ballasts, just an inconvenience.

We has something similar, with water finding its way in between a keel water tank and the inside of the keel just above the ballast. Not as much water as you had in the keel, but also inside the structure, causing unknown damage. We spent a few months drying the hull/keel out, and piping hot air in through the wet areas. Eventually it dried and we could re-seal and paint the outside of the keel. Some strategically placed holes will no doubt do the trick for letting it dry out. Anyway it should be fine in the end and I guess the boat will sail better... woohoo.

I've seen that EXACT issue on several other vessels with Centreboards. After draining and drying the areas you've drilled I suggest sealing up the drop-board system and thereafter when you are sure its dry in there use a filler to pump in the holes you drilled to fill all the keel cavities. then repair those holes. It's a sad sight indeed but the decision to repair vs. to abort the vessel comes down to your budget. But you're safe out on the water. It's not going to sink on you.... Good Luck Ya'll.

@johnrathbun3641
@johnrathbun3641 2 года назад
Yes sir I agree that you will have to make alot of holes in the keel to dry it out. You must find the source of the leak and adress that before you apply any antifouling or the antifouling will just cover the leak until it creates a crack in the paint than you will be back to square one again. But once you locate the leak, put in penetrating epoxy into the holes that you made to drain the ballast. It will re-atach the fiberglass to the hull to the keel. You will need some saringes to get the penetrating epoxy into the holes. And you will need scotch tape to apply outside the holes to keep the epoxy inside between the hull and ballast or it will run out before it sets. Its slow setting and like water consistency. Epoxy doesnt stick to the plastic of the tape. But don't seal up the holes until with tape until you see the epoxy coming out. It will be a 2 person job. One watching for the epoxy coming out and one putting epoxy in. But make sure the hull is cleaned before you apply the tape or it won't stick to the hull. Plus you will have to be fast at putting on the tape because if the epoxy gets between the hull and tape. The tape won't stick to the hull. I know this sounds like a bunch of fucking work. But its better than the alternative which is getting a different boat. Sorry bro, I wish I was there to help you guys, but I'm here in Ft. Lauderdale. But I wish you luck and don't get discouraged. You can do it. It takes time but you will be better at fixing problems when its all done. You can do it, I have confidence in you.

Probably been water there for a long time. Glass the holes up that you drilled. The outside of the keel is going to be in the water really doesn't make any difference what's inside the keel. Just keep enjoying the boat. If it isn't leaking inside don't worry about it.

You can ask the boat experts on these channels about drilling more and bigger holes, until you have ALL the water out. you could tape the exhaust of a couple shop vacuums over the holes and let them run until the air blowing out felt dry. Also ask the experts about spraying closed cell foam into all the drill holes and filling all the voids? Closed cell foam does not rot or absorb water and would help the boat to float better IMO? Also another person suggested filling each section from the top with red dye water to find the ingress point of the water? Good luck!!
@pavichapin

That spray in closed cell foam will eventually get water logged, then you really have a mess. The water probably has been there since the almost sinking.

@@dboboc Fibreglass does not corrode, but it's still destroyed by water. It sucks water and the resin is destroyed under water pressure of about 150 mbar. As 10 m water is equivalent to 1 bar, 1.5m is about 150 mbar. Polyester is not fully water resistant and can take up to 11 % of water. That's why people suggest epoxy coating outside. I'd think clearly of opening the complete laminate around the keel. Drying the keel and the laminate at all sides and relaminating the keel from outside with epoxy. At least the outer layers with epoxy. Polyester is an sour element, salt water is a base. Means the physics try to reach a neutral liquid. That's how osmosis developes. Different types of polyester resins react differently on water but these old boats were usually build with vinylester resin, the cheapest polyester type.

Wrong is that epoxy always developes a lot of heat. It does it only when a big rest is left in a narrow pot. It needs a large surface to exchange the heat into the air, if the resin is higher in the pot than the pot is wide it may begin to boil. If the laminate is put out there's a huge surface for exchange and the laminate will not even become warm. Lead has a melting point of about 250 degree Celsius, far higher than any epoxy resin can reach.

I don't know this particular boat but my first thought is that it is unlikely water would enter from outside. I would look at how the swing keel is attached to the boat or the joints that make up the box around the swing keel. Delamination of the keel would be unlikely. Worst case scenario you may have to remove the swing keel to check inside it's housing. Best of luck. Alan L SV Feeling Groovy

I had an Almond 35 which had a fresh water tank in the keel and it leaked in to it. All you need to do is drill a couple of holes as you have drain the water out and take a soft hammer (I think that is what it's called has a plastic end not metal) tap along the fiberglass to find any delamination it will sound kind of hollow not a sharp rap. You can repair it or leave it if it doesn't effect structural integrity of the hull. Let it dry for a week or two put some epoxy in your drill holes sand flush barrier coat and paint. To prevent the water getting in I would look in the bilge that is probably where it is getting in. Just reseal the bilge. Splash and check your next haul out to make sure you got the leak. I didn't have a center board so I don't know if it could be coming from there. Good luck

Drain the water, fill the void if you want with slightly thickened epoxy or better vinylester resin. I had a keel leak on 323 Pearson which apparently came from a lightening strike. Easy to fix your problem by draining. Flushing and filling the void. You can get a caulking gun type syringe to inject your resin. Vinylester resin will bond with the polyester the boat is made of and is as water proof as epoxy. While it looks bad, it's not and is a common issue with encapsulated keels.

Boats of that era have extremely thick fiberglass. Builders did not know the strength of fiberglass so they overbuilt the hulls. Pearson Yachts were at the forefront of fiberglass boat building. She’s a strong old girl that has many more miles and memories to go. She just needs a bit of a makeover. Expert advice is a necessity at this juncture. Cheers to rehabbing your beautiful old gal.

Your sloppy swing keel pin has allowed water into the bilge and THEN wateri has seeped down into the encapsulation (between the lead and fiberglass.) Now that you have the keel holes drilled (drill many, many more holes higher UP along her keel and along the bottom of her keel) - FILL YOUR BILGE TO THE BRIM with food colored water - then wait for leaks. Anything can be fixed! So keep the faith!

Thank god it is lead, I was very worried for you if the ballast was iron. Iron will rust, expand and pop the keel lamination in two. Yes there are voids in your keel that are not ballasted, by design I think. Get the water out like you are doing, let it dry and find out where it got in. A little hammer and tappety tap all over will give you an idea where the delimitation is and where the lead is too. I think you can do it but it will take time, lots of time. Good luck.

That’s a LOT of water to be trapped between fibreglass layers. I’d be looking for the void where it’s all been sitting and try to seal that up as well. Also, it’s always fixable. Strip, dry it out, have a few cervezas, and start glassing it back up.... good luck!

YOU GUYS ARE REALLY LUCKY. Water ingress is really common and not such a big problem AS LONG AS YOU HAVE ENCAPSULATED "LEAD." If you had low density ballast (iron) you would be in much more trouble. The fact that is salt water coming out of those drillings means: rudder stocks, stern gland or excess water coming of the deck into the bilge through places like the hawse pipe (anchor chain hole in deck). Never run a boat with wet bilges. The water is not going to go up, right? You need a surveyor to go over the exterior of the hull, then check the rudder stocks (lower) and make sure your stuffing box stern gland is okay. You probably already cured most of your problems by drilling it and letting that old smelly water out. The reason it smells is because it has been in there a long time. Your boat is going to be fine. A surveyor will have a 'waterometer' that tests for moisture in the hull. You will be longer on the hard than you probably hoped, but that's common too. Dry out the keel as best you can and then seal it up. Track the leaks to the obvious places mentioned above. I've sailed and worked on modern super tankers and old wooden sailboats, cleaning out the bilges is a regular job on both. If you don't keep them dry the water will find its way into trouble somewhere. If you can afford it get a drip-less sterngland, if not then just swab it out like sailors have been doing for a millennia. I send best wishes, it must have felt like a heart attack. But thank god you have lead. Really, cross your self and thank the Lord for lead. If she was an old Taiwan boat with skunk iron ballast you would be in more trouble. Many thanks for the video. I hope you are doing okay. Keep in mind you could re sheave that whole hull in three or four days.

My best guess is the water was coming down from the bilge, down to the bottom of the keel. Water that may have been there for years. Over the years perhaps with flexing and pounding the fiberglass separated in places allowing water to pocket. Have a professional look at it as well talk to a boat builder to discuss options. My approach "cheapest" would be to drill holes in strategic places, let dry, fill holes with epoxy and fiberglass over. In the bilge, remove old separated glass, re glass. The proper way would be to strip fiberglass down and around lead keel, let dry re glass. Fairing the keel will take a lot of time, energy and money. I believe Pearson Yachts is no longer around, however there are Pearson Yachts portals to get feedback and advise.

If you see water coming in add some food colouring dyes to the suspect areas. ..see what colour turns up in your bilges. Leads not magnetic iron/steel is ...not sure about iron sand but i cannot see them using that. Drill drain holes its probably ...just seen... the flanks of the lead slab where the glass has pulled away. If you can get some heat on the keel you may get it dry ..you might find a product you could pump in that will expand and bond and doesnt mind water.. then seal the holes. The black stinky water will be de oxygenated water either from a shower or sink leak or if its got into a enclosed space with some metal and its used up the O2 .. and gone anoxic ...it smells like bad eggs and is black when it comes out but after 24 hrs it will start turning rusty from the O2 in the air outside. Sometimes happens with vehicle chassis's. Water gets into a sealed box section and cannot get out you drill a hole and a sulferous stinking black liquid will come out. Ideally you want to stop water getting back in there again.

Sand blast the bottom to try and find any cracks. If none epoxy fair the bottom then put a tie coat and paint. Then check all the stuffing boxes and through bolts. Use thick rubber washers under yr stainless washers and paint the rubber washers with liquid rubber to ensure they seal

. If you seal up holes you drilled and add measured amount of dyed water you may be able to identify how much volume you have to fill as well as any other entry points for internal water, eg from keel cavity to bilge sump. Strongly endorse use of thinned epoxy to fill gaps in ballast keel cavity. boat seems very fixable.

Another cruiser had the same problem, they used a hole saw and made holes all the way down every few feet and used a wet/dry vac to suck out the water they could reach, and then flipped the switch to blow air in to dry it out. They used blue tape to put plastic over the hull base so if it rained then water would not get in and they blew air into the holes for an entire week to dry it out. Then the fiberglassing begins.

First I'd get a professional opinion about the water incursion, and what it'll take to do a proper repair. I know after owning a boat for a while you become attached to it, however it may be time to get your financial situation together, and start looking around for another boat, perhaps something without a centerboard trunk, as they tend to be problematic after a while, and do get a complete hull survey on any boat you are interested in. I know surveys cost money, but repairs are usually more expensive, and time consuming.

I am so intrigued by sailing. One commonality I have noticed is sailors don’t carry tools, Like a good set of tools!!! everyone is always struggling with pliers and adjustable wrenches! I’m a Harley guy and I ride cross country every year aside from major engine repairs I have a tool to handle any roadside repair that I could encounter aside from an engine failure and I do this with limited space and payload. What is the concern weight, finances to purchase tools, space???? I really do want to know. some day I hope to be in a position to learn to sail when I’m over my unhealthy addition to Harley’s and Airplanes😂😂. New to your channel and living it!

Skyler Smith I don't think you're been around many sailors, most cruisers I know have EXTENSIVE tool boxes, I have probably three hundred pounds in tools and I still find myself aquiring more. Sometimes an adjustable wrench or a pair of pliers is the most easily accessible tool for a short job and sufficess in the moment.

@@acmeopinionfactory8018 you would be 100% correct i have spent zero time around anyone who sails. In my neck of the woods (Utah USA) its all ski boats and fishing boats and those peeps don't carry many tools either but they aren't leaving home for months and are literally never more than a few miles from there truck with tons of other boaters to give a tow if need be. i admire some of these RU-vid sailors ( sailing GBU, Sailing Doodles, Taylors travels) as a "some day that could be fun" type of relation ship as i did with motorcycles and airplanes and now i operate and own both so maybe someday isn't that far off for me. I would assume that most sailors wouldn't react so harshly to an outsiders question's regarding simple practices while on the water or living aboard your boat I've notice this trend of people using the wrong tool for the job and was wondering why that is! if every sailor was @acmeopinion factory i bet there wouldn't be any new sailors taking to the waters! sometimes you got to do what you got to do and i understand this better than most I've limped my Harley into rural British Columbia Canada with zip ties and pipe clamps holding the shift linkage together. i didn't mean any disrespect to the creators of this channel and certainty didn't expect a harsh response from the keyboard worrier @acmeopinion factory hahahaha calm down my man isn't sailing suppose to to be relaxing?!?! I'm loving Beau and Brandy's content so far and i hope to continue watching there journey. cheers
