I thought we were done watching Shane Dawson films but then SMILEY (2012) was recommended quite often, so I had to check it out! I watched Smiley do you don't have to, and what I discovered was a poorly written low budget horror that could have been so much more with a better story and execution, despite competent performances from Caitlin Gerard, Roger Bart, and others. 36:28 As an actual dungeon master this part makes 0 sense. As the dungeon master, you ARE the princess , and also the villain, the barmaid, and enemy goblin #3. Saying "the dungeon master never gets the princess" is like a writer bemoaning the fact that they can't fuck their characters.

It's funny too, because creepypastas got popular off of somethingawful forums. And the board that they're popular on 4chan is /x/, but this whole movie reeks of /b/ in 2012. And probably now. Do people still use /b/?

@@missandry420 It definitely seems like someone who had a very passing familiarity with /b/ just incorporated it into his hackjob script as a gimmick. Actually 4chan (or /b/ specifically) tried to destroy this movie lol (posting gore and porn anywhere it was being discussed, of course doxing the director and death threats, review bombing - not like the movie even needed it - etc). I think it was basically 4chan taking offense to "cultural appropriation" even if they'd never put it that way themselves. Maybe if the director had lurked around /x/ a bit more, he could have stolen some lesser-known horror tropes instead of brazenly ripping off some of the most iconic horror movies of the 80s and 90s

My Theories: -He owed the director of this movie a favor -The director had dirt and was blackmailing him -He's rich but needed even more money for a top secret Hollywood medicine injection that would make him live forever but only worked if you're under 50 and time was of the essence so he took any job he could get -He hit his head and lost all sense of reality -He's having sex with the director and felt pity for his sad movie so decided to be in it at his boyfriend's request -His mom is dying and her last request on her deathbed was that he smiled more but he misinterpreted

The scenes with the professor gave me nightmare flashbacks. In college I had a creative writing professor who literally went on a class-long rant about quantum physics once when we read an Okay poem. When one person asked what this had to do with the class, he kicked her out. He would go on these rants kind of constantly about how his daughter was an Amazing Gifted Child, and he made us read like THREE books he wrote. But he also gave me an A on every assignment I submitted without reading 80% of them so like, whatever.

Oh, god, that Zane character at the beginning reminds me so much of a guy that I went on an awful date with. I was a senior in high school, he was a philosophy major in college. I went out with him on a pity date because our moms were friends and his mom said he was having trouble adjusting to college or whatever. So, we go out, and he won't shut up about his 'personal life philosophy' that he's put together because 'as a philosophy major that's really important to me.' He was trying to sound profound but was just stating the obvious and being a douche. He also told me that the only things he was really interested in discussing were 'religion, politics, and sex' basically as soon as I got in the car with him. I really should have told him to take me back home right then, lol.

I once was seeing a guy casually and he had an AR-15 collection for home protection. 1. He lived in a shitty apartment, no one is breaking in. 2. Most people get a handgun or a rifle for protection, not AR-15s. 3. When I asked what would happen if the bullets went through the intruder and into his neighbor’s apartments, he said it didn't matter because the intruder isn't stealing from his apartment. Dude didn't even have a bed or a couch. The thing of most value was his gaming console. Needless to say, I saw there flags and ended it.

Like idiot, moron and imbecile were literally used clinical IQ classifications, and ended up being changed because of its widespread use by lay men made it derogatory. ''mental retardation'' was a clinical term, ''retard'' kinda means delayed or held back, but now thats just not what comes to mind when you hear it or see it anymore. Its really interesting that retard actually got a widespread response, tho I dont think well see huge change in this pattern of yoinking clinical terms. Off the top of my head theres been a lot of push for changing the classification of ''personality disorder'' into a variation of ''personality adaptation'' cause of the piled up stigma around the term in the general population.

I get what you mean, but I do also want to point out that when people say it was a different time, they don't always mean that everything that happened then was acceptable. At least, I know when I refer to it as such that I'm not trying to defend it. It was a crazy different time in that, with the internet still being relatively new (kinda) people just felt so much more comfortable with doing genuinely terrible stuff because they knew that, for the most part, there would be no repercussions. The internet is still like this today of course, but there was... I don't know, there was something different about it at the time. It's hard to explain, idk.

This is a relatively old video so Nick will never see this but its after midnight and I had a bad depression meltdown, crying and dry heaving and all. College syllabi are A. industry standard and B. helpful because, like, in college I was still in the habit of using a planner like in high school, so I would just copy down assignments months in advance for classes, so I didn't have to remember to write the homework down every day classes met. Also yeah, if you're a fast reader, a syllabus can allow you to read ahead in terms of assigned reading, in case later on you're too swamped with other stuff to keep up (reading from a textbook, I mean; that doesn't work for stuff like lit seminars where everyone has to be the same level of caught up on the book for class discussions, obviously). Woo-hoo I miss college

One thing that really annoys me about the plot of the movie is how the protag is the only one entertaining the idea that these murders might be real. I get that the friends are trying to single her out, but wouldn't playing into her fears also be effective? They want her think he's real. There's no reason for anyone to think that they aren't real. They said the friend is missing but still dismiss the idea entirely. It feels unrealistic and the villains acting more like they're actually on her side would probably work more for the twist.

as someone who has both bipolar disorder, anxiety, and has been in and out of therapy, mental hospitals, and psychiatry, i HATE that trope where they make the professionals talk like,,, that. they just dont do that. my therapist is like a funny old lady who OFC takes my issues and such seriously, but also does not take things THAT seriously (which is how i like it, makes it easier to open up to her), i could never imagine opening up to someone who acts like a robot and wants to use the biggest words they can muster.

They had all the elements to make a good story out of their backstory scraps. The main girl should have been haunted by smiley after her mother's death. She could see him everywhere, lurking in the shadows - real or on the web-, so much so that she escalates the visits to her psychiatrist. The side characters, being jerk to her, would get picked of one by one by smiley. Then, at the end, you reveal that she's been Smiley all along and it was a form of extreme control for her, tendency that had been shown all through out the movie.

Or if they wanted to keep the “gang of sadistic teens” ending: she hears the urban legend about smiley and starts to see him everywhere after her mother’s death. She goes to some college parties and tries to be friends with her new roommate, but she’s so awkward that she keeps messing up - maybe she accidentally hits on the roommate’s boyfriend or rejects the nice guy SD character, and ends up kind of isolated. Then smiley starts actually killing people and the main girl can’t decide if she’s going nuts or if he’s been real all along. She steps up visits to her psychiatrist and almost gets admitted to the psych ward again, but then decides that her class on quantum physics/tulpas/philosophy/wtf that class in the movie was supposed to be has made her delusional and that smiley is the product of those delusions. Then at the end smiley comes to kill her and she jumps out the window, and plot twist! It turns out her roommate or the nice guy is the child of her psychiatrist and somehow learned about her smiley delusion, and decided to dress up as the character and terrify her IRL as revenge for whatever she did to them. Alternate ending: the evil teens freak her out so much that she snaps and kills one of them, and it all ends in tragedy with this person dead and her going to a forensic psych hospital for murder.

This was my first ever horror movie. I was only 11YO and had be brought up being told that the internet was a dangerous place so this movie gave me nightmares for weeks. Even now I still didn’t like the idea of this movie and although I love horror any movies surrounding the internet or something similar I avoid. Fun fact: atavin is for anxiety. I was prescribed it as a "fast acting" med for when I felt anxiety/panic attacks coming on (mostly when I'd go into more stressful situations) alongside "long term" anxiety meds that had to build up in my system. I don't know what else that doctor prescribed but atavin ain't gonna do shit for supposed psychosis. Maybe for the breakdown afterwards, but only if she had it on her and remembered to take it. Also I am fairly certain you cant overdose on it.

"Someone curled her hair in between these two scenes" as someone who's been on a TON of sets, MOST movies are shot painfully out of order, for budgets sake, and for space rental's sake. To me it makes NO sense. I've watched tons of films develop in which we shot the first scene, last, and I always wonder why, as most EVERY relationship, scenario, plot etc that unfolds would do so more naturally had the film been shot in order...I get it, you've only rented a space for a few days/weeks and can't go back, so have to knock out every scene that is to happen in said space. But it's so unnatural for cast and crew. Like this example, where they clearly shot the walking-to-party scene on a completely different day than the at-party scene, and continuity was COMPLETELY lost in that transition.

I remember being such a huge fan of him when I was 13 and wanted to see this movie so badly. I’m so glad I grew up and realized how bad of a person he is. I only watched him for a year or so but in that year I actually became more depressed then I already was with his constant jokes on self hate, being gay, being anything but white and being fat. Having a disorder that causes me to gain and hold weight I hated myself. I’m not in the best place but I’m a much better person without his videos and racism and much more in my life. So when you mentioned that the professor's actor is named Roger Bart I googled it because I heard that name before and it turns out my suspicions were right, it IS the Roger Bart who provided the singing voice for Hercules in the animated film and also he won a tony for You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown. da fuq is he doing in this garbage fire?!

@@skepticalrebekah Its funny how people genuinely think the same webpage who got gullible people on the internet to microwave their iphones, played capture the flag irl, "operation pridefall", got people to shave their heads for blm (haha skinhead funny), and the men behind "cut4bieber/zyan" is really capable of doing any serious harm outside of trolling. *not to downplay some of this shit, but I believe the original selfharm tags were preexisting photos online. But the preteen fanbases are pretty impressionable so yeah.. not good. But they really only have as much power as you give them and don't like to be used as your personal army. 4chan isn't a big bad alt right site, but it definitely is fucked up. The amount of pedo stories, animal abuse images, and ect.. I've seen is enough to warn people to beware of what they might see in some threads.. but the site itself warns you of the anon anarchy lmao. 13 year old me thought I was so cool and angsty. But I think hackers are more likely to find you after you piss them off during a game of csgo rather than a random 4chan board.
